• Accept incoming L2TP connections on Windows 7

  Windows 2003 can be configured as a VPN server that uses L2TP with a preshared key. Windows 7 can be configured to accept incoming VPN connections, presumably using PPTP. Is there a way to configure Windows 7 to accept incoming L2TP connections? The configuration settings for incoming connections is extremely sparse; I don't see any place to enter a preshared key or specify the protocol to use. Perhaps it is beyond the capabilities of Win 7, but I hold out hope that I'm overlooking some Group Policy settings or registry edits that allow it.

• Can't access certain specific IP/domain on Windows 7

  Been banging my head on the wall for some time now. I have a fresh install of Windows 7 - Ultimate ~x86. Some IPs can't resolve properly, it doesn't matter if I try using Firefox, Chrome or IE I end up with a domain not found (server not found, etc.) I am behind a router, all the other computers aren't affected only this Win 7 machine. It's only certain sites. e.g. xkcd.com, facebook's cdn, google group. Things I have tried: flushdns ipconfig renew Disable IP v6 on the NIC Double checked that the computer was in the right timezone @ the right time. Reinstall the NIC driver. Again 90% of the sites will work but not the major one :P help!!!

• Weird behaviour with OpenVPN: can not connect to a few websites

  My OpenVPN server is Ubuntu 10.04.4 LTS and openvpn version is 2.x My client is on Win 7. He can access most sites but not Youtube, Facebook, Twitter, groups.google.com, etc My server.conf is: local x.x.x.x port 1194 proto udp dev tun ca /etc/openvpn/keys/ca.crt cert /etc/openvpn/keys/server.crt key /etc/openvpn/keys/server.key dh /etc/openvpn/keys/dh1024.pem server 10.8.0.0 255.255.255.0 push "redirect-gateway def1" push "dhcp-option DNS 8.8.8.8" client-to-client keepalive 10 120 comp-lzo persist-key persist-tun status /etc/openvpn/keys/openvpn-status.log verb 4 I can access Youtube etc using SSH Tunnel + SOCKS Proxy, and the Ubuntu server can access all sites. so nothing is wrong with the Ubuntu server. With little information I can provide, I am not looking for a quck solution. How can I debug?

• Synergy client drops and reconnects at UAC dialog

  I've been using Synergy for a while at work to connect my XP machine (the host) to my Win 7 laptop (the client). I previously was having issues with using Synergy and the UAC prompt, as described in this question, and have had no issues since, until recently. I upgraded to Synergy 1.4.10 and now am seeing odd behavior whenever a UAC prompt appears on my laptop. When the UAC prompt appears on my laptop, Synergy momentarily drops its connection to my laptop, causing my mouse and keyboard focus to revert to my host machine (the XP machine). After about a second or so, though, the connection gets re-established and I am able to type and use the mouse buttons in the UAC prompt. Once the prompt clears, the connection drops again for a second, and then gets re-established again. Is this something to do with configuration or perhaps should I just chalk it up to a change in behavior in version 1.4.10?

• Windows 7 setup can not find hard disk

  Previously I had an old Seagate barracuda 160GB HDD which got crashed some days before. Yesterday I bought new Hard Disk Seagate Barracuda 500GB (ST500DM002). I just replaced the 500GB hard disk with 160GB one leaving data and power cable intact and untouched. And ideally this new hard disk should start functioning. I tried to install Windows 7 with DVD the setup says you don't have any hard disks installed on your machine. I rechecked connection tried with Win XP setup but continued receiving same error. Do I need to do some initialization stuff with hard disk before installing setup? If so how to do it. If not then is there any problem with my newly bought hard disk? Thanks In Advance.

  Is there any freeware out there that will allow me to run the desktop that is larger than the resolution of the screen? My situation: Win XP, Dell Mini 10, iirc- Intel GMA950 I need to use a netbook for one specific web site (with firefox) that doesn't render properly if the screen isn't at least 1024x768. It is a netbook, so the res is 1024x600. Is there anything out there that will allow me to use a 1024x768 desktop on this smaller screen WITHOUT shrinking the desktop to fit. I want to pan around.   How can I find out to which filepath (or alias) a certain command input will point to, in the Windows command prompt? Specifically Windows XP, info on other versions also appreciated! On Unix systems I simply use: $ which commandname /a/commandname Or: $ type -a commandname commandname is aliased to `/b/commandname' commandname is /a/commandname commandname is /b/commandname And I am simply looking for the equivalent in the Windows Shell (specifically Win XP). I came to this general question, from a specific issue: I had installed robocopy.exe (version 026), but the command line "robocopy" always triggers version 010, and I would like to determine where this command points to, in order to correct this mistake.

  In a high traffic application, like an online auction system, few ms could determine 'to win or 'to lose' the 'battle'. I'm from Brazil. Here, I 'ping' local sites - like UOL - and receive replies in ~ 11ms. When I 'ping' US sites - like RackSpace - I receive replies in ~ 130 ms! The point is: I need a (very good like RackSpace [1]) infra-structure to host my killer online auction application, but there's no (RackSpace like) options in Brazil... Assuming that all users are located here, in Brazil, is it 'sine qua non' condition to host my application here, in Brazil? I think ~130 ms is a very high latency but, all users will receive this reply, sure? Well, where should I host my application? [1] Feel free to point me to any other very good host option other than RackSpace. I've cited it because I only know these guys...

• Does scheduling recycling app pool in IIS7 help the server conserve memory better?

  Hello, I have a VPS (IIS7 with Win 2008) It's got: 40 websites and a SQL Server 2008 powering them with only 2 Gigs of RAM. None of the sites are mission critical, they are all just demos. I often have ram issues on the server because each site has does caching and generally uses a lot of memory. Would it make sense to set the application pools to recycle every 3 hours? I'm sure this would free up any memory leaks or processes left "hanging" Are there any other tips on this? Thank you very much!, Aron

• Suggestions for Troubleshooting WIndows 7 lockups

  I've got a Dell Latitude E6500 that was working fine under Vista x64. I got one of the new Seagate 500GB Hybrid SSD/HD 2.5 drives and thought.. hmm.. let's try Win 7 x64 on it. Bottom line: It works great for hours and then it will hard lock. I don't mean BSOD (or whatever the Win7 equivalent is). I mean my screen is displaying a static image (if there is a clock displayed, it will be frozen at the time the lockup occurred) and the mouse and keyboard do not work. Control-Alt-Delete will not work. I have to hold down the power button to reboot. The event log records NOTHING at the time the lockup occurs. Obviously something is happening to the system to cause the lockup, but the default Windows 7 x64 doesn't log it. How can I log the things Windows doesn't normally log in Event Viewer ?

• OneNote can't connect to SkyDrive in Windows 8.1

  Since I installed windows 8.1 I can't open my OneNote notebooks stored on skydrive with the 2013 Office OneNote app. When I click in the office app to open from skydrive it gives back: "We can't get your notebooks right now. Please try again later." I can open them without trouble in the modern UI onenote app, but I can't open password protected pages there. Also if I try to open it from a browser the error message follows: "We couldn't open that location. It might not exist or you might not have permission to open it." Neither can I create new notebooks on skydrive with the office app. "...The specified location is not available. -You do not have permissions to modify the specified location..." Can it be fixed somehow? Or can I at least save a notebook to my hard drive without opening it in office? The backup file got deleted with the win 8.1 installation.

• Why is IIS 7.5 flushing file cache very often?

  We're running a Win 2008 R2 server with IIS 7.5 for serving image files. It's only used for static content, and file caching has been set up to cache files for 10 minutes. However the IIS frequently completely flushes the cache (seen by using Perfmon) It's not application pool recycling, it's not because the TTL has expired, so now I'm at a loss :-( I've included a screenshot of the perfmon graph where you can clearly see the issue. Is there anywhere I can see WHY it's doing these flushes ? (Note: I'm aware I could maybe detect it by attaching a debugger to the process, but that's not an option because it's a production server, and it cannot handle the slowdown a debugger would cause)

• I can't work locally unless connected to the internet - how to fix?

  Hi, In Firefox, when I am disconnected from the net, I want to work locally on my local IIS server (Win XP, Firefox 3.5.10). I do NOT have Work Offline checked but FF says that it cannot find my site (ie. the message from FF if you try to access an online site offline) This applies to any localhost URL. I tried 127.0.0.1 and checked my Host file - that does not work either. If I check Work Offline then it shows the Firefox message that it cannot be reached because I have Work Offline checked. Unchecking it does not help. Then - I load up Safari, copy and paste the URL into that browser and it connects to my development localhost site. It is not just browser caching as I can log in etc. So Firefox will not let me develop locally unless I am connected to the internet, which is a problem. Suggestions please?

• Torrent download (utorrent and flashget) suddenly got limited speed!! Help, how to fix it?

  I was using utorrent and flashget... and usually the flashget download speed or torrent speed gets up to 70 kbps...specifically in flashget it would show that its speed is 70 kbps and while downloading it would shouw another speed (aeverage speed) which is usually about the same with the actual considering it is consistently 70 kbps......but all of a sudden i dunno what happened....im using win 7.........all of my torrent downloads are only upto 20 kbps...and in flashget.....although the speed that it reads gets to 70 or even 80 kbps....its average speed or the downlolad speed its using is only 20..........I am using a laptop and no matter where is the internet coming from its the same thing...i dont know what is limiting it....please help me, thanks.

  I have an external hard drive, and I wish to grant permissions on some files to users from 2 different computers without having to hook it up to the 2 different computers. I know the SID of the user on the other computer, I'd like to know if and how I can grant permissions to files using the SID. I'm running Windows 7 Professional 64 bits, and "The Other" computer Win 7 Home Premium 64 bits, they are not in a domain, but separate computers on a home network (not even same homegroup). • Disable Offline Files (mobsync.exe) on Windows 7 Home

  This morning I was watching the CPU graph of a Windows 7 Home laptop and noticed that every few seconds, the CPU would spike several percent. I watched the processes and determined that it was mobsync.exe (Offline Files) that was the culprit. I tried the usual steps that Googling turns up, and clicking the Manage Offline Files link to bring up the Offline Files dialog to click Disable Synch does not work because the dialog will not display. This makes sense since everything I have read indicates that Offline Files is not even included/supported in the Home version, so I am at a loss as to why it is running at all, let alone why it is sucking up CPU cycles. (My best guess is that it was started when they pressed Win+X to access the Mobility Center.) Of course I can just kill mobsync, but it could always just come back. How/why would mobsync be running on a Home version and how can it be disabled (of course the Group Policy editor is not available on a Home version).

  I had made some changes in IIS 7.5 on Win 7 and after that it has been not working correctly. The website are not opening and they are giving errors. I already tried installing/re-installing IIS using "Turn Windows features on or off" but it didn't help. I also tried to replace "ApplicationHost.Config" file inside "C:\Windows\System32\inetsrv\config" with the backup file in "%systemdrive%\inetpub\history" directory but this also didn't help.   I'm running Ubuntu 11.10 on my Virtual Machine as a web server. I've mounted the W:/ drive in Win 7 to my /www folder in Ubuntu. I can read the files, but I'm not able to write to the files. In Samba, I have created the following user: <www-data> = "<www-data>" And given guest ok for the www folder: [www] comment = Ubuntu WWW area path = /var/www browsable = yes guest ok = yes read only = no create mask = 0755 ;directory mask = 0775 force user = www-data force group = www-data I've also run sudo chmod -R 755 www to make ensure correct rw access. What am I missing in order to get write access to my ubuntu files from Windows?

• Acer Aspire 5719 with Windows XP does not boot

  Hi, I have an Acer Aspire 5710 which came pre-loaded with Windows Vista. O/S has been changed to Win SXP SP2 and was working fine till today. The laptop starts up and then hangs (does not reach till the Windows screen). Have tried the following Repair with XP CD. Re-install with XP CD (In both cases the error "No hard disk" is displayed.) Tried F5/F8 to boot with other options. Guess the hard-disk is not being recognised. The 160 Gb SATA disk is shown as IDE0 in the Phoenix Bios. There is no floppy drive. Any suggestions.   I've to faced kinda of missing drivers after formatted Windows .. Especially, Graphic Drivers, Touch-pad driver, finger print driver and so forth are sensitive . They do not work without installing drivers. I can even download at its official website . But some drivers are not found in the website. .. • WSUS setup on ADS Domain Controller VM

  How should I setup sharing/directory permissions to allow the following to work: VMHost - Hyper-V partition (not part of domain) ADServer - Active Directory Domain Controller running as guest VM on VMHost \VMHost\Updates disk share for WSUS to put the updates and other local files Problem is what permissions do I need to give to \VMHost\Updates to allow WSUS to work with this directory to avoid "The WSUS content directory is not accessible" error which I am currently seeing. As far as I can tell WSUS runs as "domain/Network Service" account. Question is without adding VMHost to the domain how do I give that user appropriate permissions to this directory? Is there a way that VMHost can be told to trust ADServer and then be able to use users accounts from there? • Dell Media Direct is rebooting my machine when it goes into sleep mode

  I've got a Dell studio 1535 laptop, which shipped w/ Vista 32 bit. I've since formatted and installed Win 7 64. Everything has been fine for months, but recently, every time I leave my machine unattended and it goes to sleep, it wakes with the Dell Media Direct splash screen, and then goes to the "Windows was not shut down properly..." dialog that asks if you want to boot safe mode/start Windows normally/etc. The stupid button is also stuck on currently, but even when it is off, the problem still occurs. From the searching I've done, I've learned that the program is installed on its own partition, but I'm fairly certain I formatted everything (see screenie of my partitions: http://www.engr.uconn.edu/~wsj05001/misc/partitions.png). How can I stop the madness?

• Domain Computers Not Listed In Network

  Our network computers are all connected to a domain, and I can see them if I search the active directory (I can click 'search active directory' and then select 'computers' and then Find Now, and all of the computers will appear). However, the computers are not listed in the network browser on any of our computers (Win XP, Win7, Linux, etc) which are connected to the domain. DC is running Windows Server 2008 (Windows Server Standard) with a configured DNS and DHCP server. All of the IPs on our local network are static IPs, although I can't see how that would make a difference. I can still connect to computers on the network via \\computer_name, but I cannot browse them in 'network' or in 'my network places'. The computer browser service is not started on the DC, but I tried starting that and it had no effect. DC currently has the firewall configured as 'off' to try to debug this problem.
