• Generating link-time error for deprecated functions

  Is there a way with gcc and GNU binutils to mark some functions such that they will generate an error at link-time if used? My situation is that I have some library functions which I am not removing for the sake of compatibility with existing binaries, but I want to ensure that no newly-compiled binary tries to make use of the functions. I can't just use compile-time gcc attributes because the offending code is ignoring my headers and detecting the presence of the functions with a configure script and prototyping them itself. My goal is to generate a link-time error for the bad configure scripts so that they stop detecting the existence of the functions.

• How do you remove/clean-up code which is no longer used?

  So, we have a project which had to be radically descoped in order to ship on time. It's got a lot of code left in it which is not actually used. I want to clean up the code, removing any dead-wood. I have the authority to do it and I can convince people that it's a commercially sensible thing to do. [I have a lot of automated unit tests, some automated acceptance tests and a team of testers who can manually regression test.] My problem: I'm a manager and I don't know technically how to go about it. Any help?

  I have a tree structure in an sql table like so: CREATE TABLE containers ( container_id serial NOT NULL PRIMARY KEY, parent integer REFERENCES containers (container_id)) Now i want to define an ordering between nodes with the same parent. I Have thought of adding a node_index column, to ORDER BY, but that seem suboptimal, since that involves modifying the index of a lot of nodes when modifying the stucture. That could include adding, removing, reordering or moving nodes from some subtree to another. Is there a sql datatype for an ordered sequence, or an efficient way to emulate one? Doesn't need to be fully standard sql, I just need a solution for mssql and hopefully postgresql EDIT To make it clear, the ordering is arbitrary. Actually, the user will be able to drag'n'drop tree nodes in the GUI

• AJAX in ASP.NET - How do I check a checkbox and have the action reflected in the database?

  This is about as beginner as it gets regarding AJAX, but here it goes. I want to have one checkbox somewhere on an ASP.NET web form (ASPX). When the user clicks the checkbox, I want one of those spinning indicators to show. While that spinning indicator is showing, I want an update operation to occur in the database to reflect that the user has intended for that checkbox to be checked. update MyTable set CheckboxChecked = 1 Then, as soon as the update operation has occurred, I want that to be reflected in the checkbox by removing the spinning indicator and replacing it with the standard checked checkbox. I'm guessing this is done with an UpdatePanel and possibly an update statement followed by a looped call to a select statement... but I have never used AJAX before and have no idea how to go about it.   I'm developing a social game in Flash with a team of developers. Our server-side guy has developed a really slick RESTful API for the Flash client to talk to. A lot of the client-server interactions involve adding and removing objects from a persistent world, so the API makes extensive use of the PUT and DELETE verbs. The problem is, the URLRequest object in AS3 only supports the GET and POST verbs. We're on a strict schedule, and we'd really rather not have to rewrite the whole API to just use GET and POST. Has anyone come up with a good way to get Flash to send other verbs?

• Mercurial adding new file gives no match found error

  I have a strange problem with updating Mercurial. Everytime when I add a file to my repository and then update another location of the repository (for example with in CI process), the error "no match found" occures. Then when I remove to whole folder and clone it again there are no problems and the new added file(s) are there. Updating and removing doesnt give problems When I do "a" Verify the following is shown: data/test.txt.i@54: missing revlog! 54: empty or missing test.txt test.txt@54: b80de5d13875 in manifests not found 3 integrity errors encountered! (first damaged changeset appears to be 54) Any idea what could be causing this?

• WeakHashMap iteration and garbage collection

  I am using a WeaekHashMap to implement a Cache. I am wondering if I am iterating over the keys of this map, and at the same time garbage collector is actively removing keys from this map, would I receive a ConcurrentModificationException ? I do not think so, because as far as I understand, concurrentmodificationexception happens because of bugs in the application code where the developer forgot to understand that the same map is shared/used by other threads and in this case, it should not happen. But wondering how would JVM handle this when WeakHashMap is not synchronized ?

Let's suppose we have : A: public class MyDict { public Dictionary<int,string> dict; // do custom-serialization of "dict" public void SaveToFile(...); // customized deserialization of "dict" public void LoadFromFile(...); } B: public class MyDict : Dictionary<int,string> { } Which option would be better in the matter of programming style ? class B: is to be de/serialized externally. Main problem is : is it better to create new class (which would have only one property - like opt A:) or to create a new class derived - like opt B: ? I don't want any other data processing than adding/removing and de/serializing to stream. Thanks in advance!

  Hi guys, I have an HTML form consisting of some text-inputs. I'm using jqTransform to prettify them. Now I want to add two buttons that will add and remove text-input dynamically. Adding is easy: $('#container').append(''); $('input[name=foo]:last-child').jqTransInputText(); But removing is tricky: $('WHAT-TO-SELECT').remove(); I can't do "input[name=foo]:last-child" since it's already wrapped (some divs) by jqTransform. To put this question in another way: How do I select based on "who has child of type input with 'foo' as its name"?

  Hi everyone, I use git for my local work (and love it ever so much), and I follow a workflow similar to the one described in this article. So basically, when starting on a new feature, I create a branch for it, go through the usual hack then commit cycle, and when I think I'm done with it, I squash it into a single commit using git rebase --interactive master, and these squashed commit messages always end up looking like the example in the article, reproduced here: [#3275] User Can Add A Comment To a Post * Adding Comment model, migrations, spec * Adding Comment controller, helper, spec * Adding Comment relationship with Post * Comment belongs to a User * Comment form on Post show page Of course, that's after a bunch of removing # This is the xth commit message lines and copy/pasting * in front of each commit message.   Hello, I'm making a hit counter. I have a database and I store the IP and $_SERVER['HTTP_USER_AGENT']; of the visitors. Now I need to add a filter, so I can put away the hits, that are made by bots. I found out, that many bots usually keep some common words in the $_SERVER['HTTP_USER_AGENT']; , so I's like to make and array of words, that would keep the bot from displaying in the results. Here is what I have now: while($row = mysql_fetch_array($yesterday, MYSQL_ASSOC)) { <-- Here I need a code, that would run through an array and check, if it containts the keywords and if it doesn't ... just count++; -- } Also if you know any other way of detecting and removing the bots from the results, I'd be verry thankful. • debate: Is adding third party libraries to a war a good idea?

  We have a debate going on . a. The "standard" way of assembling a web app. Create a WAR with all our app artifacts and all other components like hibernate and memcached etc are deployed in the tomcat/shared/lib area. b. Create a humongous war with everything included and nothing in tomcat/shared/lib. Pros for a - It keeps things modular and the war is small. Cons for a - dependency on shared/lib has to be managed especially by the deployment process. Pros for b - All dependencies are controlled by the build process removing any room for error. Cons for b - War is really, really big. If you are deploying over a network to a huge farm, then it might have an impact. want to see what thoughts others might have about this.

  Hi! I'm doing a conversion between two software which both use XML so the actual conversion part is fairly straightforward - adding text here, removing others here, converting a few information. I'm using VBSCript WSH. The only issue I'm still having is the darn &#13; character - that's my problem! I've tried both strText = Replace(strText, "&#13;", "") and using a regex with Regex.pattern = "&#13;" ... neither works. I also tried replacing char(13), VBCR... nothing seems to detect the actual string itself and not the character it's creating. Can anyone help me?

• ASP.NET MVC vs. Jquery/AJAX (Where to draw the dividing line?)

  I am learning MVC and I understand the basics now. It is very good for CRUD pages and has built in HTTP methods to post/get edits/updates. That is nice. This is all very testable by just creating a new controller and testing it. But I was thinking about other web page scenerios when using MVC. What about a page that has 2 listboxes that you add/remove users with. (A button will move the user from one listbox to another) This would be done using Jquery/Javascript... But then what happens to testing? How do you test adding/removing users from a listbox like that example? It seems to me the more jquery you use the less testable the page becomes right? When you get beyond basic forms being filled out then you need to use something more than the standard MVC pages. What is the correct philosophy on this on when am I not understanding ?

  I have noticed a strange Sql Translation in a LinqToSql Query I was trying to optimise. If I execute the following Recipients.GroupJoin( RecipientAttributes, x => x.Recipient_Id, y => y.Recipient_Id, (x,y) => new {Recipient = x, Attributes = y}) .Skip(1) .Take(1000) It executes in a single query as expected. However Recipients.GroupJoin( RecipientAttributes, x => x.Recipient_Id, y => y.Recipient_Id, (x,y) => new {Recipient = x, Attributes = y}) .Skip(0) .Take(1000) executes in a separate query for each Attributes selection. Removing the Skip(0) makes no difference either. Can anyone explain this and is there something I can do to get the first page query executing in a single sql statement?

Removing the const in front of result makes the code work correctly. • Rotating an image in all browsers (canvas in IE?)

  I finally got to work with canvas only to find out that it is not implemented in IE. I tried explore canvas from google to use it in Internet Explorer, but it's not working for my code (http://uptowar.com/test.php - little bug though that it is not removing the old image when rotating). So, is there an other way to smoothly rotate an image around it's bottom center angle? Maybe javascript? Or is there a way to do it with IE and canvas anyway? Edit: Google Chrome also seems to add an ugly border to the canvas example.. there must be an other smooth way? Edit2: tried a hacky javascript way: it causes mayor lags and corrupts the image (http://uptowar.com/test2.php), anyone knows of a working method?

• VS2008 is very slow on a specific large C++ solution

  I have a solution with 21 C++ projects and 1 VB.NET project. The IDE responds very slowly when I simply move the carret in a file or try to open the menu. The process seems to take 50% of CPU for each movement. It only happens with this solution and only on my machine. The solution has total of 2380 source and header files, of which 1280 are header files. I tried to remove all connection to the source control (Perforce) but it didn't help. Also, I have Visual Assist installed but even after removing it (uninstall), the same behavior continued. Any idea?

  I made this simple function (remove all $elem from $array): function remall($array, $elem) { for($i=0; $i < count($array); $i++) if($array[$i] == $elem) unset($array[$i]); $newarray = array_values($array); return $newarray; } But it isn't working perfectly, here are some inputs and outputs $u = array(1, 7, 2, 7, 3, 7, 4, 7, 5, 7, 6, 7); $r = remall($u, 7); Output of $r: 12345767 $n = array(7, 7, 1, 7, 3, 4, 6, 7, 2, 3, 1, -3, 10, 11, 7, 7, 7, 2, 7); $r = remall($n, 7); Output of $r: 1346231-30117727 Notice how there are still 7s in my outputs. Also, My function will only be removing numbers from an array. Let me know if you spot something, thanks.

  On IIS, we have disabled Anonymous authentication and enabled Windows Authentication What we need is to only allow users who are members of an Active Directory security group to access the Access Point at all. All other users should be directed to a static web page that will give them instructions on how to request access. By adding the security group to the website permissions, and removing the \Users group, we have almost achieved this. Users in the group are allowed through, those not in the group are asked for a (Windows) username and password. Instead of requesting the username and password, we want IIS to redirect them to the static page. Please advise me on how can this be done.

• Prevent keypress whilst shift key is held

  I'm trying to prevent certain keys from being entered into an input box, but only if that particular key is pressed whilst the shift key is held: $('selector').keydown(function(e) { console.log(e.shiftKey); if (e.shiftKey && e.which == 51) { e.preventDefault(); alert('Disallowed'); } }); The alert fires but the character still appears in the text box. If I remove e.shiftKey from the if statement and press the key (without shift held), the alert fires and the character does not appear in the text box. I've tried searching around for an explanation as to why this happens but to no avail, any help would be greatly appreciated! edit Removing the alert seems to fix the problem (which seems bizarre), I'd really love to know why it behaves in this way though, it doesn't seem to make any sense. • Is there a way to delete a form element without using jQuery .remove()?

  Using .remove() so that the select all check box is not submitted to the server. However, it is visible to the user as the select all checkbox is "physically" removed from the web page, upon submit. Instead, I would like removing the select all check box to appear seamless but NOT on the server side. i.e. - I would like to keep the input on the page but remove the element in the form array before it is sent. Can I manipulate the element[] array of the form before it is sent to the server and delete it there? Thank you.

• Any reason NOT to slap the 'synchronized' keyword everywhere?

  In my java project, almost every non-static method I've written is synchronized. I've decided to fix up some code today, by removing most of the synchronized keywords. Right there I created several threading issues that took quite a while to fix, with no increase in performance. In the end I reverted everything. I don't see anyone else writing code with "synchronized" everywhere. So is there any reason I shouldn't have "synchronized" everywhere? What if I don't care too much about performance (ie. the method isn't called more than once every few seconds)?
