  • Is there a suitable replacement for C++, when I would like to write video processing applications?

    Hi I want to write a video editing software, and the "logical" conclusion is that the language I must to use is C++... But I don't like it (sorry c++ fans) I would like to write it with something cool, like Lisp or Haskell or Erlang... But I don't know if the open source implementation of those languages (I don't have money to buy licenses) let me made a competitive software (in the performance area) What do you think? what do you recommend?

    We were using FFmpeg which is free. And when a bug occurred that broke the system, a previous developer installed PandaStream. My question is, what do you recommend for quality video encoders? Is it best to stick with ffmpeg and keep it free, or does a small website really need a heavy duty service like Panda?

    hi, I'm using Video module with CCK Video Upload field and I want to play videos in a lightbox when the user clicks on video thumbnails.     Ubuntu 12.10 beta 2 has awfull 3d performance and Video Tearing do something about this. Tearing is common issue on linux and makes linux sucks. Ubuntu also is bloated and uses compiz , i hope ubuntu developers should be more serious cause even a noob should know that compiz sucks now. I have no screen tearing and full opengl 3d performance on cinnamon ! And thats why i like linux mint 13. Ubuntu is so slow applications launching time is bigger compared to linux mint or xubuntu and many many times slower compared to arch linux. I was sattisfied before the 12.04 version now i'm just dissapointed..... (downvoters are simply noobs or silly fanboys and they deserve ubuntu)

    I have created a blog on Tumblr a few days ago. Looking over the statistics, it seems that Tumblr itself is visiting my website, using different browsers. What is this supposed to mean? Are these real visitors or is it a Tumblr bot? One example: Browser: Chrome 32.0 OS: Win8 Resolution: 1024x768 Location: New York, United States IP Address: Tumblr (66.6.40.249) Referring URL: (No referring link) Other browsers used include: Chrome 20.0.1090.0 Firefox 21 Opera 12.14 Chrome 15.0.861.0 Chrome 32.0.1667.0 Internet Explorer 6 Internet Explorer 9 Opera 12 Opera 12.02 They all use the same screen resolution (1024x768) and have no referrer. The flash version is not set, but they do support javascript. Unfortunately, I don't have the full user agent string.

  • Video Bug in Ubuntu 12.10 MSI CX623 laptop

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5xyJkS8XjgA&feature=youtu.be I managed to take a video with what happens on my Ubuntu 12.10 laptop when I play with the volume and hover with the mouse over the slider and when I press Ctrl + Alt + D (show Desktop/minimize all) The real bugs are those in which the panel becomes transparent on the down side, exactly above the volume slider (and not only when that slider appears, but also when brightness slider appears, and when blocking my touchpad applet appears) and when I have a maximized window, more maximized windows or a non maximized window that touches the panel, while I use Ctrl+Alt+D (show Desktop/hide all normal windows). Is there a way to solve this bug? PS: The other bugs are from Record My Desktop. I didn't have the mentioned bugs in ubuntu 12.04, but I like more the graphics in 12.10.

  • No video signal during: grub, for a moment when I log out and during shut down

    When I should see the GRUB menu I only see my monitor writes out this: "No optimum mode. Recommended mode: 1600*1200". If i wait for a short while, ubuntu starts to boot and it reaches the desktop. So I guess there is no video signal during that time, there's the grub menu but i cant see it and after the wait time everything is fine. I have the same problem when I log out for a short moment, before the log in screen is reached. and this also happens when i shut down ubuntu. The VGA is an onboard NVIDIA GeForce 7025. Kinda strange problem, I have no idea how to solve this. Please help :)

    Some may claim that this has already been asked, but I don't see MY problem in any of those posts. And if they actually have the same problem as mine, I may not understand what they've been trying to point out, actually. I hope you understand as to why I require a direct answer to the problem I'm having. I installed Ubuntu 14.04 along my Windows using a USB stick. It is possible to access my Windows (8.1) files from the folder page. I took off the Windows sticker, so I cannot get a Windows CD or anything from the support guys. I would delete my Windows partition then, but it's also tangled in this geeky mystery. Can i use ffmpeg to find the duration when its being uploaded and store them on the database.? Is storing the duration in db is necessary or else is there any other method?

    Hi all, i have last ubuntu installed (10.10), but from an year and thousand updates, video drivers updates, an hundreds of tricks, the mouse pointer is showed like an UGLY square...   • Mission 26 Captures Endeavour’s Last Trip in Stop Motion

    On September 21, 2012 the Space Shuttle Endeavour was delivered to the Los Angeles International Airport and spent the next three days being slowly transported 12 miles to the California Science Center. One dedicated team of photographers captured the whole thing. Lead by Matthew Givot, the group followed the shuttle for three straight days, photographing it around the clock. The Endeavor started on Thursday night and went on until Sunday night, with very little sleep to no sleep. The only thing that kept us going was pure love of the art and adrenaline. One thing that stood out the most for me, while I was shooting, was the people of Los Angeles. It was so powerful to see the excitement on peoples faces and the pride of their home town. No matter how many times I would see the Shuttle it would never get old. This has been an amazing experience that I will never forget. My hope is that this film will show you the amount of dedicated people and teamwork that it took to get the Endeavour to its new home. Enjoy. That is when I realized that I am more than just a SQL expert.  I have been writing this blog now for more than 10 years, and it grew from a personal bookmark to a thriving website with over 2 million views per month.  I thought to myself “I could write a book about how to create a successful blog!”  And that is exactly what I did.  I am extremely excited to share with all of you my new book – “Secret Toolbox of Successful Bloggers.” A Labor of Love This project has been a labor of love for me.  It started out as a series for this blog – I would post one article a week until I felt the topic had been covered.  I found that as I wrote, new topics kept popping up in my mind, and eventually this small blog series grew into a full book.  The blog series was large enough to last a whole year, so I definitely thought that it could be a full book.  Ideas on how to become a successful blogger were so frequent that, I will admit, I feel like there is so much I left out of this book.  I had a lot more to say than I originally thought!   • Why are my videos playing speeded up with no audio, but work fine if I log in as a guest?

    Since the start of this week I have been experiencing a glitch in the multimedia on my Samsung R518 laptop. I have 2 problems: Videos in every player are speeded up around 2 or 4 times (including youtube.com (both HTML5 and flash variants), any other video on the web and videos on my laptop played by Totem Media Player), exception is VLC player, but 2nd problem does concern even that. There is no sound - simple as that (with or without headphones plugged in). These all problems are now, and has not seen before, I upgraded to Ubuntu 10.10 after it was possible, and from start I didn't have anything from this - it just started in this week. I haven't even putted new software in. I have more or less solved the question (kind of) - I just logged in as a guest - and it all works, but when I make a new user - it does not. Please help me.   • Display Problems running Ubuntu 12.04 in Windows VMware Player

    I am posting this again because I have changed to VMWare Player and I discovered something new. I am running Ubuntu 12.04 LTS (Guest) in VMWare Player 6.0.2 on Windows 7 64-bit Host. I have VMWare Tools installed properly. I am running MATE but the problem persists when I change (to and from) xfce, gnome, mate a-- and back again I had been using this for a couple of years without any graphics issues. After an Ubuntu update (typical) -- my video is corrupt and will not refresh correctly. My desktop icons are "mirrored" and when I open a terminal window (for instance) -- sometimes -- the window appears multiple times. Of course, only one is the real image. It seems to be a refresh problem. When I move an active window around the screen the "older" images "erase" and my icons (for instance) are in the correct location. For instance, I can move the terminal around a pretty corrupted window and the screen behind it is repainted correctly. NEW: Next, I got the idea to try and Remote Desktop in to the Ubuntu 12.04 LTS Guest OS from my Windows 7 64-bit Host. Once working, and connected via Win RDC -- using MATE as default in my /etc/xrdp/startws.sh -- my video is not corrupted and works fine (as in the past). Any ideas about what is going on ? or how to fix this ?

  • Can't log in to GNOME after upgrade (raring -> saucy)

    I've just upgraded my ubuntu (raring to saucy) and I now can't log in to GNOME. As opposed to virtual consoles (Ctrl-Alt-F1, for example). I set it up to log in automatically. But it asks for password now. I type in the password, press Enter, the screen blinks and here I am again at the login screen.   • I want to make video games, but I hate coding

    I know this sounds eally crazy. However, I just want to ask. Now, I am studying C++ code in my school (My major is computer programming). Honestly, my grade is not so good, and assignments are really hard. Sometimes, I feel sad that I will spend 8~10 hours per day for coding (which is stressful) at the future for my job. But, I still want to make video games. Maybe this is the only one reason why I am taking all of stressful courses. I always write down plots, stories, characters, fictional gaming worlds. Once, I thought I should study artistic technology such as game design program not computer technology such as C++, C#, etc. However, most of popular game designers(or directors) such as Kojima, Miyamoto Shigeru, etc used to be good programmers. And, companies actaully assign programmers to directors because they understand how to make a game. I try to find other colleges or universities where teach game design program. However, one article that lists rank 10 game design schools in North America seems untrustful because the survey company only scores it from intervews of students. (Once, I tried to attend Art Institute of Vancouver which is rank 7 according to that article. However, one programmer who used to be an instructor in there told me the truth. That is the employement rate of graduated students is low) Do you guys have any advice for me?

    What if you had to pick out a 1980s era computer for use in your home today? BBC show Electric Dreams walks us through the history with a “time traveling” family. Electric Dreams is a show based on the novel premise that an average British family is starting, technologically speaking, in the 1970s and progressing over a month to the year 2000–restricted each step of the way to using technology available only in the era they are emulating. In the above video clip they’ve reached 1982 and visit the National Museum of Computing to pick out a vintage computer. It’s interesting to see the kids interact with the computer and experience programming for, presumably, the first time. Have a vintage computer memory (mine is programming on a Timex Sinclair); let’s hear about it in the comments.
