• Using user editable image URL in application. Security issues.

  Hi there. I am writing an application where users are required to show their photo, however as my server resources are very limited I can not let them upload it to the server. So I have three major questions: 1. How to properly validate photo URL? At least I can validate with regexp, however I need to check for file ending: `validates_format_of :photo_url, :with => URI::regexp(%w(http https))` 2. Security issues? XSS? Even I validate the picture at the moment of creation, hacker can replace image with malicious stuff anytime. 3. Maybe there are free asset stores with API?

  Hi folks I have a table with three columns, which we'll call ID1, ID2, and Value. Sample data: ID ID1 Value 1 1 0 1 2 1 1 3 1 1 3 2 1 4 0 1 4 1 1 5 0 1 5 2 2 1 2 Value is limited to 0, 1, or 2. What I need to do is pivot/transform this data into a column-based count of how many times each possible Value appears, grouped by ID, ID1. The output of the above should be: ID ID1 Val0 Val1 Val2 1 1 1 0 0 1 2 0 2 0 1 3 0 1 1 1 4 1 1 0 1 5 1 0 1 2 1 0 0 1 I'm using SQL Server 2008. How do I do this?

• parsing command option with default values and range constrains in C

  Hi, I need to parse command line arguments in C. My arguments are basically int or float with default values and range constrains. I've started to implement something that look like this: option_float(float* out, int argc, char* argv, char* name, description, float default_val, int is_optional, float min_value, float max_value) which I call for example with: float* pct; option_float(pct, argc, argv, "pct", "My super percentage option", 50, 1, FALSE, 0, 100) however I don't want to reinvent the wheel ! My objective is to have error checking of range constrains, throw an error when the option is not optional and is not set. And generate the help message usually given by usage() function. The usage text would look like this: --pct My super percentage option (default : 50). Should be in [0, 100] I've started with getopt but it is too limited for what I want to do and I feel it still requires me to write too much code for a simple usecase like this. thanks

  There are n petrol bunks arranged in circle. Each bunk is separated from the rest by a certain distance. You choose some mode of travel which needs 1litre of petrol to cover 1km distance. You can't infinitely draw any amount of petrol from each bunk as each bunk has some limited petrol only. But you know that the sum of litres of petrol in all the bunks is equal to the distance to be covered. ie let P1, P2, ... Pn be n bunks arranged circularly. d1 is distance between p1 and p2, d2 is distance between p2 and p3. dn is distance between pn and p1.Now find out the bunk from where the travel can be started such that your mode of travel never runs out of fuel.

• Having onFocus do several things.

  So I have this input tag <input ... onFocus=...> and what I want is for a warning popup to come up if somebody clicks to write in the input field. After the person has read the warning he/she closes the popup and can continue to write in the field. I have managed to implement the popup just fine but my problem is that I lose focus on the input field when the popup comes up so the next time I click the field the popup comes back again and im back on square one. The system I work on uses php and javascript so and I cannot use anything other than that to solve the problem and my experience with both php and javascript is limited.

• Single logical SQL Server possible from multiple physical servers?

  Hi, With Microsoft SQL Server 2005, is it possible to combine the processing power of multiple physical servers into a single logical sql server? Is it possible on SQL Server 2008? I'm thinking, if the database files were located on a SAN and somehow one of the sql servers acted as a kind of master, then processing could be spread out over multiple physical servers, for instance even allowing simultaneous updates where there was no overlap, and in the case of read-only queries on unlocked tables no limit. We have an application that is limited by the speed of our sql server, and probably stuck with server 2005 for now. Is the only option to get a single more powerful physical server? Sorry I'm not an expert, I'm not sure if the question is a stupid one. TIA

• WP: redirect users to a certain category using cookies

  Basically like cragslist. once you select city on craigslist, nexttime when you go to the site, it redirects you to the city you selected. What I want to achieve: When a person comes to the site and selects a particular category, the next time they come to the site (returning user) - the page will open up on that category section. I would think this would be fairly easy to do via setting a cookie when the visitor clicks on the category link (or when the category page loads). When they return the following time, the cookie is read and then the page redirects accordingly. Unfortunately my knowledge of PHP and cookies is limited, (hence my search for answers) so I need to ask if anyone can help me out! Anyone have any ideas? Thanks!

The problem is that filename length on most filesystems is limited to 255. Another limit is about 32k subdirectories in a single folder.   Hello, We have to communicate with a C++ component from a J2ee web application and my proposal involved using JMS server to communicate with the C++ component which is located on other machine. However the developer of the C++ component wants me to open up TCP/IP sockets from the webapplication and communicate over XML. My view is that socket programming in web application is error prone and will not scale well since there is a limited amount of sockets that can be opened up. Please let me have your architecture/design preference on using JMS vs TCP/IP sockets. Thank you

  AJAX autocomplete is fairly simple to implement. However, I wonder how to handle smart tag suggestion like this on SO. To clarify the difference between autocomplete and suggestion: autocomplete: foo [foobar, foobaz] suggestion: foo [barfoo, foobar, foobaz], or even better, with 'did you mean' feature: [barfoo, foobar, foobaz, fobar, fobaz] I suppose I need some full text search in tags (all letters indexed, not just words). There would be no problem to do it witch regex or other patterns for limited number of tags (even client side). But how to implement this feature for big number of tags? Is there any particular reason (besides URL) the tags on SO are dash separated? What about Unicode characters in tags? I store the tags in the table with the following columns: id, tagname. My SQL query returns objects with following fields: id, tagname, count

• Drupal vs FatWire - Any thoughts?

  Hi folks, a company I am working for is considering the usage of a CMS, apparently two of the suggested CMSs are Drupal and FatWire. FatWire is proprietary and quite expensive, therefore it seems that there is a not so big community build around the product. Functionality seems to be extensive, even though a few design choices seem counter-intuitive and long-winded. Drupal instead is open source and has an big community backing the product. There are plenty of books around and usage seems more intuitive. Functionality wise I am unsure on how they compare. The main features that the company's team seem to like are team workflow features and revision control (present in FatWire, even though the implementation seems quite limited). Hopefully some of you guys have been faced with these two products before, and might have a few suggestions up their sleeve. Help would be much appreciated!

• How to generate distinct random numbers per distinct threads in .NET?

  Dear ladies and sirs. I have to generate 19 bit random numbers. However, there is a constraint - two threads may not generate the same random number when running certain code. The simplest solution is lock the entire code. However, I would like to know if there is a non locking solution. I thought, I can incorporate ManagedThreadId within the produced random numbers, but the ManagedThreadId documentation on the Internet mentions that it may span the whole Int32 range. Unmanaged thread id seems to be limited to 11 bits, still this leaves me with just 8 truly random bits. Are there any other ways? Somehow to utilize the Thread Local Storage, may be? Thanks.

So basically what I need to accomplish is, create an array of x amount of numbers (created randomly) who's value add up to n: Lets say, I have to create 4 numbers that add up to 30. I just need the first random dataset. The 4 and 30 here are variables which will be set by the user. Essentially something like x = amount of numbers; n = sum of all x's combined; create x random numbers which all add up to n; $row = array(5, 7, 10, 8) // these add up to 30 Also, no duplicates are allowed. I need the values with an array. I have been messing around with it sometime, however, my knowledge is fairly limited. Any help will be greatly appreciated. Cheers

• C# Launcher program(ConsoleApp) that launches other executables

  I've written a launcher program that fires off a given number of executables, with the following code: Process.Start(strPath2EXE); The problem I'm running into is it seems I'm being limited to launching only about four copies of the executable. Is there a different way I can launch the executables without this limit? I'm hoping to run 10+ concurrently.   I'm pretty well versed in C#, but I decided it would be a good idea to learn C++ as well. The only thing I can't figure out is chars. I know you can use the string lib but I also want to figure out chars. I know you can set a char with a limit like this: #include <iostream> using namespace std; int main() { char c[128] = "limited to 128"; cout << c << endl; system("pause"); return 0; } But how would I make a char without a limit? I've seen chars with * but I though that was for pointers. Any help is greatly appreciated.

• How do I implement jQuery image cycle loops on rollover for multiple thumbnail sets on a page?

I do see that this is because I'm targeting classes, but my jQuery experience is quite limited so I have no idea how to only target a single instance of each class without effecting the others, and I can't go in and hardcode id's because my thumbnails and amount of videos on each page are determined dynamically via this Django template. http://pastebin.com/nf42bSAx I would greatly appreciate any help, as this is essential for my project (open source media platform).   I've been reading a lot about the disadvantages of using "order by rand" so I don't need update on that. I was thinking, since I only need a limited amount of rows retrieved from the db to be randomized, maybe I should do: $r = $db->query("select * from table limit 500"); for($i;$i<500;$i++) $arr[$i]=mysqli_fetch_assoc($r); shuffle($arr); (i know this only randomizes the 500 first rows, be it). would that be faster than $r = $db->("select * from table order by rand() limit 500"); let me just mention, say the db tables were packed with more than...10,000 rows. why don't you do it yourself?!? - well, i have, but i'm looking for your experienced opinion. thanks!

  I'm attempting to call LinkedIn's API and store Network Updates. Each update has a Unix timestamp that I'm retrieving as a string variable from the REST XML response. I want to convert the string timestamp to a mysql datetime format. The date() function accepts an integer as the second argument for time to be converted. However, I'm on Windows 32 bit PHP and the integer type for this platform is limited to 2147483647. $timestamp = '1293714626675'; // sample pulled from linkedin $timestamp = (int) $timestamp; // timestamp now equals 2147483647 $mysqlDatetime = date('Y-m-d H:i:s', $timestamp); // produces incorrect time Is there a better method of creating the mysql datetime in PHP? I realize that I can convert it upon insert into MySQL however, that would require changing other dependent code.

• How do I make a recursive list that checks company rankings?

  I have a set of companies in rank order. I want my rule to check if the companies in a specified list are in rank order, and for the rule to recur until all companies in the list have been checked. I currently have the following: isOrder([]). isOrder([COM1,COM2|T]) :- rank(COM1,D), rank(COM2,E), D<E, print("in order"), isOrder([COM2|T]). However, this does not seem to work. Sometimes, the recursion goes on forever without ending, and sometimes the recursion doesn't work at all. This is when I vary the code to try and get the correct answer. Can anybody help me? I have just started Prolog and my understanding of it is severely limited. Any help would be greatly appreciated.
