• Connect Android application to remote data

  Sheesh talk about limited information! I'm trying to get my Android application to connect to an online database to access information. There's quite a bit of info including geotags and these are going to be mapped on my app. The developer site has the very informative piece of information: You can use the network (when it's available) to store and retrieve data on your own web-based services. To do network operations, use classes in the following packages: java.net.* android.net.* Like I said in my previous question, I'm still very much an android newbie, and trying to remember my java oop from college is slow. Does anyone have an example of how this might work, or how I could implement it? I wouldn't mind even connecting to a local xml file, if I could find a good example of how to do that!? Am I just looking in all the wrong places?! Help. Please! T

• Prism for Silverlight: How to maintain views in a specific order inside a region.

  Hi I am creating sort of a "Navigation panel" (which is actually an ItemControl) for SL and using Regions to allow each module to add his link to the panel. Problem is that modules loading is inconsistent and thus order of links in the panel can change according to modules loading order. Restricting the modules order is out of the question. Other feasible option is the order the region's Views Collection that is binded to the ItemControl, the problem is that ViewCollection is very limited, so ordering it is pretty hard. Did I miss an option, do you have an idea? Thanks Ariel

• Getting started with SQLite (Android)

  Hey Everyone, I have limited SQL background, basically a small amount of manipulation through HTML and mostly with pre-existing databases. What I am trying to do is set up a database that will store time information for bus routes. So basically I have different routes with stops for each route and then a list of times that the bus arrives at each stop. Here is an example of a table of times from their website: Link. • Best Design for creating Historic Reports on GAE

  My App requires Daily reports based on various user activities. My current design does not sum the daily totals in database, which means I must compute them everytime. For example A report that shows Top 100 users based on the number of submissions they have made on a given day. For such a report If I have 50,000 users, what is the best way to create daily report? How to create monthly and yearly report with such data? If this is not a good design, then how to deal with such design decision when the metrics of the report are not clear during db design and by the time it is clear we already have huge data with limited parameters (fields). Please advice.

• Samsung UMPC, Built in Camera doesn't support DirectX how can I use it?

  The Samsung Q1 Ultra, is the perfect device for my software except that the built in camera seems to be incompatible with standard DirectX drivers, so my .Net camera implementation can't use the device. I have limited experience in this area.. Even Skype can't access this camera, but a little program from Samsung can.. I've looked at the program's assemblies and it's too obfuscated to see inside so I can't see anyway to use them.. What sort of camera could this be? Are there any .Net classes / implementations I can use to access this camera?

• Creating "screenshots" with HTML 5 and CSS 3?

  Hi, I need to create small thumbnails of HTML elements. I first thought using CSS 3 reflection, but it is limited to being only a reflection (and not a direct copy) and I can not move it from its standard position. Then I thought using JavaScript to copy the HTML element entirely along with all its contents and apply CSS 3 transform to scale it down to a thumbnail. That works pretty well, but is kind of a hack. Does anyone know a better way of doing this with JavaScript, HTML 5 and CSS 3. Flash, Java and such are not an option and it only needs to work in one browser.

  I am building music app, where user can do several tasks including but not limited to listening song, like song, recommend song to a friend and extra. currently I have this model: class Activity(models.Model): activity = models.TextField() user = models.ForeignKey(User) date = models.DateTimeField(auto_now=True) so far I thought about two solutions. 1. saving a string to database. e.g "you listened song xyz" 2. create a dictionary about the activity and save to the database using pickle or json. e.g. dict_ = {"activity_type":"listening", "song":song_obj} I am leaning to the second implementation, but not quite sure. so what do you think about those two methods? do you know better way to achieve the goal?

• Data Validation for Random varying Phone Numbers

  I am storing phone numbers of varying lengths in my WPF (C#, VS 08) App. I store them as strings. My question is about my method AddNewPhoneNo(string phoneNo). In this method, I use Int.TryParse to validate the incoming number (i.e. not null, is numeric...). I've since realized this is probably not the best way to do this, because then I am limited to a number which is ± 2147483647. Definetly this is not always the case with phone numbers. What is a good, easy way to validate phone numbers? I guess the basic rules would be as follows: All numeric All positive Upto 25 chars (could be more, but this will to do for time being) Can't thing if theres any more rules at the moment, that's probably it.

• Take input through Buttons in java

  I understand that the title might not be descriptive enough, but I'm making a magic square game in Java and basically, I'm trying to replicate user input as found in the sudoku game here: http://www.websudoku.com/. What I have is a n x n grid of Buttons (not JButton) as the board and what I want the user to be able to do is when the user clicks on one of the buttons, similar to the game above, it allows the user to type in his guess in the button itself instead of popping up a dialog box with an input field of some sort. I don't know where to start, I am a beginner in Java (not very beginner, but my knowledge with the various Java APIs is very limited), so I'm trying to find out if this would be possible and if it is, how would I go about doing it? • misleading plot issue in mathematica

  I want to study some "strange" functions by plotting them out in mathematica. One example is the following: mod2[x_] := Which[Mod[x, 2] >= 1, -2 + Mod[x, 2], True, Mod[x, 2]]; f[x_] := Which[-1 <= x <= 1, Abs[x], True, Abs[mod2[x]]]; fn[x_, n_] := Sum[(3/4)^i*f[4^n*x], {i, 0, n}] Plot[{fn[x, 0], fn[x, 1], fn[x, 2], fn[x, 5]}, {x, -2, 2}] However, the plot I got from mma is misleading, in the sense that the maxima and minima of fn[x, 5] should be on the same two levels. But due to high oscillation of the function, and the fact that clearly mma only takes limited number of points to draw the function, you see the plot exhibit strange behavior. Is there any option in plot to remedy for this? Many thanks.

• Options for storing large text blobs in/with an SQL database?

  Hi, I have some large volumes of text (log files) which may be very large (up to gigabytes). They are associated with entities which I'm storing in a database, and I'm trying to figure out whether I should store them within the SQL database, or in external files. It seems like in-database storage may be limited to 4GB for LONGTEXT fields in MySQL, and presumably other DBs have similar limits. Also, storing in the database presumably precludes any kind of seeking when viewing this data -- I'd have to load the full length of the data to render any part of it, right? So it seems like I'm leaning towards storing this data out-of-DB: are my misgivings about storing large blobs in the database valid, and if I'm going to store them out of the database then are there any frameworks/libraries to help with that? (I'm working in python but am interested in technologies in other languages too)

• Three boolean values saved in one tinyint

  Hello, probably a simple question but I seem to be suffering from programmer's block. :) I have three boolean values: A, B, and C. I would like to save the state combination as an unsigned tinyint (max 255) into a database and be able to derive the states from the saved integer. Even though there are only a limited number of combinations, I would like to avoid hard-coding each state combination to a specific value (something like if A=true and B=true has the value 1). I tried to assign values to the variables so (A=1, B=2, C=3) and then adding, but I can't differentiate between A and B being true from i.e. only C being true. I am stumped but pretty sure that it is possible. Thanks

• Using vim, how do you quickly refresh a web page you're working on?

  I've been using VIM for a few weeks now while messing with various web languages and I'm really enjoying it. I find it cumbersome having to tab or click into my browser and refresh the page to see the effect of a code change. It's even more annoying as I'm using Virtual Box and I tend to be working from PDF files on the host system so I have limited window space. Do you gurus have any fancy ways of doing this? I was wondering if it's possible to split the VIM workspace and have links/lynx in a window of its own or something to that effect?

  Greetings, With all the existing development towards web development and emerging technologies in that area, I'm left wondering; what is a state of the art way to implement desktop applications in this day and age? If you were to start a new application of considerable size from scratch what technology would you invest your efforts in (focusing on cross platform portability, decent performance and interoperability with existing standards)? I've looked into the Adobe Air platform which appears quite impressive but seems rather limited to support a large application. Would something like Java/SWT still be the sensible choice? Do things like GWT fit the bill? Thanks P.S. I'm leaving my question a bit open-ended in an effort to gather diverse answers. Surely this a subjective matter and there is no right and wrong answer.

• 3 DIV's - Center Middle and Others taking up rest of room

  I need to have 3 DIV's - you can see 3 colors in the above image. The middle DIV needs always be 960px and alls needs to be centered (you can see the 2 grey lines above). The other 2 DIV's need to take up all the other available space. If I zoom in and out of the page the red and yellow DIV's need to expand with the page while the middle green one remains centered. I've tried DIV solutions and Table solutions and I can't get it to fit.   Hello, Our application (C#/.NET) needs a lot of queries to search. Google's 50,000 policy per day is not enough. We need something that would crawl Internet websites by specific rules we set (for ex. country domains) and gather URLs, Texts, keywords, name of websites and create our own internal catalogue so we wouldn't be limited to any massive external search engine like Google or Yahoo. Is there any free open source solution we could use to install it on our server? No point in re-inventing the wheel.

• How to make a slide gesture in a view?

  I have a grid layout that holds a limited 6 items per screen. This set number is just a base for the app and make it look and feel better so it must stay set to that. To get passed this and to add some flash to the app, I want to animate a style of screen change. For instance, when a finger is dragged left, push the current view to the side and bring the next it, very similar to how a gallery does it, except I would like it to be able to scroll vertical as well.   Hi all, Recently I've been bothered because I reached a point in which C++ (even 0x) felt very limited, so I started looking for alternatives. Forget Java, C#, Python or Ruby. I still like the low-level nature of C++ and I'm not fond of virtual machines. Further, I'm a game engine developer, so I have to develop core routines which must be really fast, and lately I've been hungry for code expressiveness. C++ is an almost-there language for me, but there are many exceptions on how to use templates, and GCC isn't optimizing stuff as well as I'd hoped it would. So I'm considering to start learning D. Do you think it will suffice my needs as a game developer? I'm weary because I've never heard of D being used for that. Thanks!

  Ok what im trying to do is a kind of audio processing software that can detect a prevalent frequency an if the frequency is played for long enough (few ms) i know i got a positive match. i know i would need to use FFT or something simiral but in this field of math i suck, i did search the internet but didn not find a code that could do only this. the goal im trying to accieve is to make myself a custom protocol to send data trough sound, need very low bitrate per sec but im also very limited on the transmiting end so the recieving software will need to be able custom (cant use an actual hardware/software modem) also i want this to be software only (no additional hardware except soundcard) thanks alot for the help.

• I need a simple slideshow for images of different sizes

  I'm looking for a very basic slideshow which displays images of various sizes. For example, the first image could be a standard 800x600 but the next might be a taller portrait image and so on. The slideshow doesn't need to have any controls. The specification just states that the page will be black and in the centre there'll be the area where images will display. As far as I know, it will be very simple like this - www.jeffcutter.net. I'm limited on time here so I'm not able to look into writing a custom one or anything like that.   Here's the sample code: var d = new Date("2010-06-09T19:20:30+01:00"); document.write(d); On FF3.6 this will give you: Wed Jun 09 2010 14:20:30 GMT-0400 (EST) Other browers tested; Chrome 5, Safari 4, IE7 give: Invalid Date I know there is limited to no support for ISO8601 dates, but does anyone know what and/or where the difference is in FF3.6 that allows this to work? My thought is that FF is just stripping out what it doesn't understand while the others are not. Has anyone else seen this and/or getting different results from the test script?

• Problems getting git 'server' to work on Windows

  I've followed the Tim's article (mentioned in the answer to this question), but - like many others, it seems - I'm stuck when trying do the test clone at the end. I get the fatal: the remote end hung up unexpectedly error, even though my $HOME path seems to be right. Anyone got any pointers to where I might start for debugging this? My git and linux-fu are severely limited... I'm aware of this answer to the same question, but it doesn't apply in my case, I don't get any messages about paths.

• MediaWiki: workaround for watchlist restricted to 7 days?

  I'm running MediaWiki 1.13.2. When I go to my watchlist, I'm limited to only viewing the last 7 days (though MediaWiki should permit me to view the last 30 days). I've tried: Clicking the all button Changing the URL Changing the settings under MY PREFERENCES-WATCHLIST. When I save (e.g. 30 days) it resets back to 7 days! Googling for an answer... Anyone heard of this bug before? Is there a workaround? I can't see a setting anywhere for this to be a maximum.
