• How can I make my laptop use a phone as a wi-fi adapter?

  I have an HP Pavilion dv6400 series laptop with an NVidea chipset which is the subject of a class action lawsuit. The symptom (PDF) that I'm experiencing is that the system fails to recognize that there is a wireless adapter installed. It doesn't appear in Device Manager. In this question, I ask if there's a way to work around this problem. As an alternative, I'd like to see if there's a way to use an old Windows Mobile 5 phone that does not have cellular service (voice or data) as a Wi-Fi adapter. How can this be accomplished? The system is running Windows Vista Home and has the latest BIOS (F42) and Windows updates and drivers.

• No access to Samba shares

  I have three shared folders in my local home directory- that is to say, on my Ubuntu desktop's /home/me/. All were set up using "Sharing Options" in Nautilus' right-click menu. The standard "Music" and "Videos" folders are configured identically: the "Guest Access" box is checked, but the "Allow others to create and delete" is not. The third folder, called "shared", is configured to not allow Guest access but to allow others to modify files. I have not altered /etc/samba/smb.conf by hand, I have only used Sharing Options to create and modify these so-called "shares". My roommates have two Windows 7 computers and one Ubuntu Netbook Remix netbook. I have the aforementioned desktop machine and laptop running 10.04. None of these machines can access any of the shares. Attempts to access the Guest shares result in the message \\machine\directory is not accessible. The network name could not be found. This is the error message generated by a VM running Windows 2000. The other Windows machines generate a similar error. The Ubuntu laptop gives the error Unable to mount location: Failed to mount Windows share. Hurrah, once again, for informative error messages. That really helps a lot. When attempting to browse the folder called "shared" from the laptop, I'm confronted with a password dialog. This behavior is the same will all machines I've tried in the situation. On entering my username and password for the account to which the shares belong, the password dialog briefly disappears and is replaced with an identical dialog. No error message, useful or not, appears. When attempting to browse this folder with the VM, the outcome is the same except that the password dialog helpfully states "incorrect username or password". My assumption is that the username and password in question is that of the user which owns the shares. I have tried all other username and password combinations available in this context and the outcome is the same. I would like to be able to share files. Sharing them with Windows machines is a nice feature, or would be if it was available. Really I consider sharing files between two machines with the same version of the same operating system kind of a minimum condition for network usability. Samba last functioned reliably for me more than ten years ago. I have attempted to use it on and off since then with only intermittent success. Oh, and "Personal File Sharing" from the Preferences menu does not result in an entry in Places → Network → my-server. In fact, the old entry "MY-SERVER" goes away and is replaced by "koanhead's public files on my-server", which when I attempt to open it from the laptop gives a "DBus.Error.NoReply: Message did not receive a reply." I know I come here and gripe about Ubuntu a lot, but on the other hand I spend literally hours every day trying to fix things in Ubuntu. It's a good system which aspires to greatness, which is why things like this either Need to work; or Be adequately documented. Ideally both would be the case. Anyway, rant over. Hopefully someone will have some insight on this issue. Thanks all who bother to read this wall o'text for your time.

• Sennheiser PC360 Microphone Suddenly Stopped Working

  Just recently, my Sennheiser PC360's microphone stopped working. Yesterday Night, it was working 100% fine. Muting correctly, un-muting, volume boosting, etc. I woke up this morning, and got into a skype call (After not changing a single setting on my computer), and it wasn't working. I tried mumble, and it didn't work there either. After that, I checked my sound devices and found out it was plugged in, but not responding to my voice. I unplugged the headset, and it correctly showed that it was unplugged. So, a quick run-down: Sennheiser PC360 Headset suddenly stops working after a few hours of sleep. Software is up to date I can hear the mute sound when I raise and lower the microphone arm Windows Sound Device Manager shows that it is plugged in Unplugging the headset correctly shows it is unplugged Windows Sound Device Manager shows that the microphone isn't receiving any input

• Ubuntu 13.04 can only work in recovery mode

  I have just updated my 12.10 to 13.04. Everything is updated. But I can only boot to a black screen. I mean after the GRUB interface and purple screen. And I can hear the voice of the password interface. But it is only the black screen. It all works OK in 12.10. But it can work in the recovery mode. I mean go into the recovery mode and choose resume. And then everything is OK. But when loading kernel, the screen is dirty. I don't know why and I have Googled a lot. But no resolutions works. My graphics card is Intel GMA HD 4000, tested as VESA: Intel® Sandybridge/Ivybridge Graphics. I have been trapped in this for a whole day. I do need help. Hope someone can help me. By the way, the kernel is 3.8.0-19 if it helps.

• Skype audio always goes 'robotic' for the same user

  Someone I talk to on Skype a lot has a very persistent issue, where after a few minutes their voice goes very 'robotic'... still understandable but annoying. We can restart the call and it's fine, but fairly consistently after a few minutes it returns. He experiences this with other people too, not just me - I don't have anyone report problems with my audio quality. This is not an ISP issue - he gets the same problem on multiple PCs in different countries, in fact he's even recently moved to a different continent and got a new internet connection... same problem. It seems somehow to be a problem with his Skype account, which is really quite odd. It's been going on for months of not longer.

  Matt Lord already announced this change, but I am so happy, so want to repeat. MySQL Community Bugs Database Team introduced new button "Affects Me". After you click this button, counter, assigned to each of bug reports, will increase by one. This means we: MySQL Support and Engineering, - will see how many users are affected by the bug. Why is this important? We have always considered community input as we prioritize bug fixes, and this is one more point of reference for us. Before this change we only had a counter for support customers which increased when they opened a support request, complaining they are affected by a bug. But our customers are smart and not always open support request when hit a bug: sometimes they simply implement workaround. Or there could be other circumstances when they don't create a ticket. Or this could be just released version, which big shops frighten to use in production. Therefore, sometimes, when discussing which bug to prioritize and which not we can not rely only on "Affects paying customers" number, rather need to make guess if one or another bug can affect large group of our users. We used number of bug report subscribers, most recent comments, searched forums, but all these methods gave only approximation. Therefore I want to ask you. If you hit a bug which already was reported, but not fixed yet, please click "Affects Me" button! It will take just a few seconds, but your voice will be heard.

• C# calendar needs Business Logic for real-time reminders? [on hold]

  I am not a super experienced C# user, though I have some experience in .Net and VB.Net. Just got this new job and my first assignment is a mission critical part of the business. It is pretty important I get it right so I was hoping for some sage advice. We have created a calendar using jQuery, C#, .Net & SQL Server 08. The calendar works but now we are wanting to add email, SMS and voice-call reminders. We are a small company and can do whatever we need to do with no restrictions on our IT environment. I have some base-line experience with Unix servers but would prefer to stay in the Micro$oft universe if it is prudent to do so. I know how to add the API calls and services to initiate these reminders (using built in email services for email and Twilio.com for SMS). I am asking for advice about how to approach a reliable and timely listener service that knows when to call the service or API for the reminder before an appointment. EG. SMS: "You have a conference call in 30 minutes." I have done some research, but it is hard to know what is a proven reliable approach. What I am looking for is an experienced opinion on a good (or the best) strategy for implementing a solution that will reliably listen for appointments and dispatch the reminders when needed.

• WPF: Update Listbox automatically C#

  Hi, I have two WPF windows developed using the surface SDK, one that is a data entry form, and the second dispays the data in a listbox. The listbox displays the data perfectly but when I add a new record using the data entry form, the listbox is not updated until I reopen the window. Is there a way to automatically update the listbox through binding or something?   After much struggling, I've figured out how to authenticate to my company's Active Directory using just 2 lines of code with the Domain, Username, and Password in .NET 2.0 (in C#): // set domain, username, password, and security parameters DirectoryEntry entry = new DirectoryEntry("LDAP://" + domain, username, password, AuthenticationTypes.Secure | AuthenticationTypes.SecureSocketsLayer); // force Bind to AD server to authenticate object obj = entry.NativeObject; If the 2nd line throws an exception, then the credentials and/or parameters were bad. (Specific reason can be found in the exception.) If no exception, then the credentials are good. Trying to do this in .NET 3.5 looks like it should be easy, but has me at a roadblock instead. Specifically, I've been working with this example: PrincipalContext domainContext = new PrincipalContext(ContextType.Domain, domain); using (domainContext) { return domainContext.ValidateCredentials(UserName, Password); } Unfortunately, this doesn't work for me as I don't have both ContextOptions set to Sealed/Secure and SSL (like I did above in the .NET 2.0 code.) There is an alternate constructor for PrincipalContext that allows setting the ContextOptions, but this also requires supplying a Distinguished Name (DN) of a Container Object and I don't know exactly what mine is or how I would find out. public PrincipalContext(ContextType contextType, string name, string container, ContextOptions options); // container: // The container on the store to use as the root of the context. • Entity Framework 4 "Generate Database from Model" to SQLEXPRESS mdf results in "Could not locate ent

  I'm using Visual Studio 2010 RTM. I want to do model-first, so I started a new MVC app and added a new blank edmx. Created a few entities. No problem. Then I "Generate Database from Model", and allow the dialog to create a new database for me, which it does successfully as 'mydatabase.mdf' in the app's App_Data directory. Then I open the generated sql file (in Visual Studio). To run it of course I have to give it a connection. I am not sure if it's right, but I used '.\SQLEXPRESS' and Windows authentication. No idea how I'd tell it where the MDF is. Then the problem -- upon executing it, I get: Msg 911, Level 16, State 1, Line 1 Could not locate entry in sysdatabases for database 'mydatabase'. No entry found with that name. Make sure that the name is entered correctly. And indeed there were no tables created in the MDF. So... what am I doing wrong, or am I off my rocker expecting this to work? :)

• Combobox with collection view itemssource does not update selection box item on changes to the Model

  Hello, Sorry for the earlier lengthy post. Here is my concise (!) description. I bind a collection view to a combobox as a itemsSource and also bind its selectedvalue with a property from my view model. I must keep IsSynchronizedWithCurrentItem="False". I change the source list ofr the view and then refresh the view. The changed (added, removed, edited) items appear correctly in the item list of the combo. But problem is with the selected item. When I change its property which is also the displaymember path of the combo, the changed property value does not reflect back on the selecton box of the combo. If you open the combo dropdown it appears correctly on the item list but not on the selection box. Now if I change the combobox tag to Listbox in my XAML (keeping all attributes as it is) then when selected item's displaymember property value is updated, the changes reflect back on the selected item of the list box . Why this issue? Just FYI: My View Model has properties EmployeeCollectionView and SelectedEmployeeId which are bound to combo as ItemsSource and SelectedValue resp. This VM implements the INotifyPropertyChanged interface. My core employee class (list of which is the source for the EmployeeCollectionView) is simply a Model class without INotifyPropertyChanged. DisplayMemberPath is "Name" property of employee Model class. I change this by some means and expect the combo selection box to update the value. I tried refreshing ther SelectedEmployeeId by setting it 0 (where it correctly selects the dummy "-- Select All --" employee entry from itemsSource) and old selected value back. But no use. The old value takes me back to the old label. Items collection has latest entry though. When I make combobox's IsEditable=True before the view's refresh and after refresh I make IsEditable=False then the things work out correctly! But this is a patch and is unnecessary.   I'm trying to create a custom action for my Wix install, and it's just not working, and I'm unsure why. • MS Access 2003: Can data disappear from records and how do I test for this and prevent it?

  Problem and about the database: Data from a record in Access 2003 database has disappeared. This database has 1 backend and 3 frontends, multiple users and is hosted on Citrix. Within this database, we have records of all clients served, ranging in the 1000s. Background info: The form for client data entry is set up with various subforms, including both a "programs enrolled" subform and a "services" subform. A client can be enrolled in multiple programs. Once enrolled in a program, services can be entered for that program area using the services subform. There are multiple fields in the services subform, one of which is a drop-down field allowing you to choose from the programs a client has been enrolled in (the list is updated for that client whenever he is enrolled in a new program). The problem details: For one specific record and one specific program area, the program has disappeared from the "programs enrolled" subform and all of the related services have disappeared from the "services" subform for a period of 3 months of data entry. However, other programs and services for this record did not disappear. Questions: Is the disappearance of data a common Access 2003 problem? Are there tests in place that can be run to see if data is disappearing and catch that data? If so, what are they? If there is specific code involved, what is it? What can be done to prevent the disappearing of data (other than using a different database)?

I just want to get the latest version from the remote copy, and overwrite anything on my local copy. Edit: I tried everything.   Hello, I'm trying to figure out if it is possible to launch an intent within an ExpandableListView. Basically one of the "Groups" is Phone Number and it's child is the number. I want the user to be able to click it and have it automatically call that number. Is this possible? How? Here is my code to populate the ExpandableListView using a Map called "data".   I am attempting to update an entry in Azure Table Storage. If it is an update to an existing entity, then the "AttachTo", and the "UpdateObject" calls work, but when it gets to "SaveChanges", it throws the "One of the request inputs not valid" exception.   I've written an app that I use as an agent to query data from a database and automatically load it into my distributed web cache. I do this by specifying an sql query and a type in a configuration. The code that actually does the querying looks like this: List<Object> result = null; try { result = dc.ExecuteQuery(elementType, entry.Command).OfType<Object>().ToList(); } catch (Exception ex) { HandleException(ex, WebCacheAgentLogEvent.DatabaseExecutionError); continue; } elementType is a System.Type created from the type specified in the configuration (using Type.GetType()), and entry.Command is the SQL query. The specific entity type I'm having an issue with looks like this: public class FooCount { [Column(Name = "foo_id")] public Int32 FooId { get; set; } [Column(Name = "count")] public Int32 Count { get; set; } } The SQL query looks like this: select foo_id as foo_id, sum(count) as [count] from foo_aggregates group by foo_id order by foo_id For some reason, when the query is executed, the "Count" property ends up populated, but not the "FooId" property. I tried running the query myself, and the correct column names are returned, and the column names match up with what I've specified in my mapping attributes. Help!
