  • XP shared printer doesn't show for printing from 12.04

    - by Anne
Sorry if someone else has this same problem... I found similar, but not exactly the same. I have a Canon Pixma MP250 connected via USB to a WinXP machine. Running dual boot from laptop, 12.04. When I try to add the printer (on Ubuntu machine), it doesn't show up. Prints fine from Win7 (dual boot). Have been unable to find a CUPS driver, but have a cnijfilter (possibly has nothing to do with any of this?). So irritated (not at anyone)... just driving me crazy! Any help is awesome!

    - by bcsanches
On my windows XP machine when I try to install the DirectX SDK the setup freezes on the first screen. When I click on the "next" button the system does some processing and stays on the same window. Clicking again on the next button does nothing. The directX SDK log only contains a single entry for each try: 12/01/09 09:49:03: DXSDKSetup: CLR version number = 2.0.50727 any ideas? Thank you!

  • Applications starts very slowly from a network path

    - by Snowfox
Hi We have a windows 2008 server which hosts the network share \\srvcompany\lib. This share contains several applications needed for the daily business. Every client/user (all win xp) has shortcuts on the desktop to these apps. We have the problem that at several (but not all) clients the apps starts very slowly. If I copy the application's programm files to a local folder then they'll start fastly. When I watch the memory usage in the task manager on such a "slow" machine while an applications starts I notice that the memory usage grows much slowier than when I start the app from a "fast" machine. But when I copy files with Windows Explorer from this share, the speed is nearly the same. I've also checked the network driver, both tested clients have the same network card with the same driver version. Has anyone an idea where or what I should check next to solve this problem? Thanks for answers.

  • Ditto (clipboard manager): can't set shortcut of Win+<num>. Get “Error Registering Position 1”

    - by Jeff Kang
Somone made a Youtube video on Ditto, and that person uses Win+Num to paste items from the list. He put a screenshot of his settings on Google Plus: When I try to do the same, which is to put “1” in the text field of Position 1, and check the “Win” box to add the Windows key as the sole modifier for the shortcut, which will be Win + 1, I get an error in that says “Error Registering Position 1” in a window titled CP_Main: Could it be because Win+Num conflicts with the natural Win+Num shortcut (starts the application pinned to the taskbar in that position, or switches to that program) of Windows 7? Thanks.

  • Saving small text files is slow over Win Server 2008 R2 VPN

    - by Buckers
We have a VPN connection to our Windows Server 2008 R2 machine, and the connection works fine. Large files go back and forth fairly quickly, but we use the connection mainly for working on small text files (.aspx, .asp, .php etc). What we find very annoying is that even the smallest of files, there is a noticeable delay of between 2-5 seconds when saving any changes. As we often make changes to code and are constantly saving, this is becoming a problem. Is there anything that might be causing this delay? Or is there anything we can do to speed it up? The connection is definitely not the issue as we have a constant 5Mb upload from our server, and 20Mb+ down on the remote machines. Thanks, Chris.

  • What is proxy_desktop?

    - by alexs
When shutting down my computer running Windows XP Professional SP3, it sometimes gets stuck with a message window saying that Proxy_Desktop wasn't closing and if was it ok to kill it. If I would kill it, the computer will shutdown successfuly. I've looked through all the processes showing in Task Manager, but never seen one called "Proxy_Desktop". So what is this "Proxy_Desktop"?

I want to set up a system with (9) monitors arranged in a 3x3 grid. Is this configuration possible with Windows 7? Does it max out at a set number of monitors? Any suggestions about known working hardware combinations would be much appreciated. Currently considering (3) nVidia Quadro NVS420 cards to drive the array.

  • Can you recommend a good replacement for Windows Sound Recorder?

    - by andygrunt
Can anyone recommend a good, free replacement for Windows 'Sound Recorder'? Requirements: Very quick to load and run Allows saving to a compact sound format (e.g. MP3) Allows long recordings (1+ Hours) Free Runs on Windows XP Would be nice but probably not essential: Saves along the way (in case of crashes) Allows simple edits (trim start and end and maybe remove chunks in the middle) Before anyone suggests it, I'm aware of (and have used) Audacity but I'm really after something as simple and lightweight as possible.

  • Multiple wifi cards and Internet connections on Win-7

    - by Dpp
Hello, I have two wifi cards and two separated internet connections. I connect to the Internet with both of them but one does all of the internet transactions (and I have not seen any place where I can specify which one I would prefer to use!) What I would like to do is use one of them for the browser and skype only, and the other one for stock exchange software for instance. Any idea if it is possible?

  • Switching to Chrome from IE

    - by Alan Parrish
Hi, I work in IT at a school and we recently updated our database software, however the web access that the teachers use to do registration does not work too well with Internet Explorer 7 and we're thinking about switching to chrome (mostly due to me hating IE in general) but the problem we have is that users are unable to migrate their bookmarks over from IE due to account restrictions, is there any way to get this working? A bit of info about the system if it could be helpful; Almost all the client PCs are running Win XP SP2. My colleagues machines are running Windows 7, I use OS X Snow Leopard and most of out servers are running windows server 2003 (with the exception of 2 one on 2000 server and another on 2008 R2). The Active Directory Controller is running Windows Server 2003

  • Simple command line calculator

    - by ldigas
Had one years ago (on Win 3.1 or '95, I'm not sure). Anyways, it was a really simple program. Stood somewhere in PATH and enabled you to do something of a kind calc 5 + 28.3*sqrt(12) and it spit out the result. Anyone know of any such these days? Doesn't need to do anything fancy ... maybe it would just be nice if it had support for exponentials, but that's it. Anyone? p.s. Not interested in full blown solutions like Python or MATLAB.

  • Copying info from the device manager to the clipboard

    - by user12816
I have a Logitech webcam, which I can plug into my Windows XP machine via USB. When I open the Device Manager, I can select the webcam and choose Properties--Driver--Driver Details. This gives me the following list of driver filenames: C:\Program Files\Common Files\logishrd\WUApp32.exe [25 more filenames...] C:\WINDOWS\TWAIN_32\QuickCam\reset.wav My question is, is there any way to copy this list to the clipboard? Copying it by hand is a drag.

  • Experience with asymmetrical (non-identical hardware) SQL Server 2005 / Win 2003 cluster

    - by user24161
I am reasonably good at dealing with SQL Server clusters; I am wondering if folks have experience, good or bad, using a mix of different models of servers from the same vendor in one SQL 2005 cluster. Suppose: I have one more powerful, more RAM, more shizzle box and one less powerful, less memory, less shizzle box bound together in a 2-node cluster. These would be HP DL380 and 580 machines (not that it should matter) I understand AND automate the process of managing memory for each SQL instance, so there's no memory contention when SQL instances fail over. Basically I am thinking a CLR proc will monitor the instances and self-regulate memory caps on each instance, so that they won't page or step on one another. I get the fact the instances might be slower and or under memory pressure if they share a "lesser" node, and that's OK. The business can deal with a slower instance in a server-problem scenario. Reasonable? Any "gotchas" to watch out for? More info 10/28: doing some experiments with a test cluster I find that reconfiguring max/min memory is OK PROVIDED the instance isn't already under memory pressure. If I torture the system with a huge query that demands a big chunk of RAM, and simultaneously adjust the memory allocation to a smaller value than what is being actively used, it's possible to run the instance out of memory and have it halt and restart itself (unhappy situation). Many ugly out-of-memory messages in the error log, crashing, burning... It's an extreme case, but good to know. Seems, then, that it would only be really safe to set this on startup of the instance, as in have a startup script that says "I am on node1, so my RAM settings are X or I am on node two, so they are Y," like this: http://sqlblog.com/blogs/aaron_bertrand... Update: I am testing a SQL Agent + PowerShell solution described in more detail here.

  • USB devices don't work after restoring from Stand By

    - by Steve
Hi. I'm running Windows XP SP3 on a NEC Versa L1100 laptop. If I wake my laptop up from Stand By, no attached USB devices will function. Device Manager shows all USB entries to be working properly. There is an option to "Allow the computer to turn off this device to save power" in the Power Management properties of USB entries. Is this causing the issue or something else? I have the latest drivers for my motherboard installed.
