• Best practices: Sending email on behalf of users

  The company I work for provides testing services for the healthcare industry. As part of our services, we need to send email to our clients' employees. Typically, these are temp, part-time, or contract employees, and so have private email addresses (eg Hotmail, GMail, Yahoo!, etc). Up to now, we've been sending from an internal address, but this means that replies come back to us when employees aren't paying attention or don't know to send queries to our clients. I'd like to change this, so that the person who requests that the email is sent is the person that is replied to. We've used reply-to: in the past, but it seemed to cause additional mail to be trapped by spam filters. I've been reading about sender: and on-behalf-of: headers, and was wondering what the current best-practice was for sending email in a scenario where we need to send email such that the reply goes to a domain we don't control.

• How would I / could I obtain an reasonably comprehensive list of domain names?

  I know that domain names are constantly changing, and I know there are a lot of them, but there is clearly a region of the domain name space which is stable. How would I go about getting a list, even a very big one? Such a thing must logically exist, even if it is in a distributed form, because the web's DNS servers resolve names to IP addresses. So in theory if I could poll all the DNS servers in the world at a moment in time I would have the complete list of mapped names. Is there a practical way of doing that? As an aside, does anyone have any good estimates of how many domain names exist at the moment?

• PHP Session Cookies fail with users changing IP

  Hello, I have a login script for a small application that works by storing session cookies and checking them on each page to make sure the user is logged in. One of the two users who uses the system keeps getting logged out randomly. This appears to be down to the session cookie that shows then authenticated no longer being present. After a lot of investigation the only thing I can see that is different about this user is that their IP address is changing (today it was changing every hour (their on Sky)). The only thing is the change of IP address has happened 5 times this morning and only once has the user been logged off. Has anyone had a similar issue? Are session cookies in someway tied to IP addresses? Any help or links much appreciated. Thanks C

  Social networking is great, but there is something fundamentally wrong with the way social networking is implemented today in most popular services. I'll put it in this example: Imagine that there is no SMTP, and consequently, it is globally assumed and accepted that you can only send email to addresses on the same domain. The result would be the emergence of a single email service, let's call it emailbook.com, which we all have to subscribe to, if we really want to communicate with the world. This is what's happening with social networking today. You HAVE to use the same service your fiends/colleagues are using to talk to them. I would like to be able to put up my own social site, invite my friends who trust me, share amongst us, but still be able to share with the world at large. What are the chances of this scenario happening in the future? What does it take?

• Importing contacts into the GAL

  I have a list of People and E-Mail addresses that my client would like to be able to download and then import into their GAL (Global Address List) in Outlook. Right now it is in a DataGrid. Several questions... Is that possible? What format do I need to put the list into so that it can be imported? How do I import it?   I look after a number of divisional websites for a uk based membership organisation and what we want to do is provide, as well as other address functions, is a closest member lookup to a web user from the websites themselves. A few use cases that I want to fill: Case 1: The user puts in their post code and wants to see all the members in a 5/10/15/20/30/40 mile radius from them Case 2: The member puts in an area (city, county, etc.) and gets a list of members in that area. Essentially what I'm looking for is a programmable API which I can code against to do: post code lookup and returns addresses (after picking house number for example). search post code + radius (5miles, 10miles etc) and get a set of applicable post codes to then join onto the membership records in the database Any recommendations? It can be a quarterly update install on the server, it can be a queryable web service. I'm open to suggestions. Thanks in advance

  Hi! I can't find any other post which addresses this topic on a purely general level. I'm very unexperienced in developing full scale websites. I get around using HTML and PHP for simple tasks. Now I'm looking at developing a more elaborate site and want to get hold of a good tool which doesn't eat my wallet to the bones. I guess I should add more intelligent text here about what I expect it to be capable of, but I really don't know so much. I guess the code/design/preview style in dreamweaver appealed to me, and I'm definetely going to use scripting like PHP or ASP.NET, some database work etc. I guess pretty much the standard (?) website development tasks. So, are there good tools out there I should be looking at?

• How to verify mail origin?

  I wish to code a little service where I will be able to send an e-mail to a specific address used by my server to send specific commands to my server. I'll check against a list of permitted e-mail addresses to make sure no one unauthorized will send a command to the server, but how do I make sure that, say, an e-mail sent by "[email protected]" really comes from "thezombie.net"? I thought about checking the header for the original e-mail server's IP and pinging the domain to make sure it is the same, but would that be reliable? Example: Server receives a command from [email protected] [email protected] is authorized, proceed with checks Server checks "thezombie.net"'s IP from the header: W.X.Y.Z Server pings "thezombie.net" for it's IP: A.B.C.D The IPs do not correspond, do not process command Is there any better way to do that?

• Need help parsing file/writing script

  Hey all, I have been doing nothing but web development over the last few years and haven't written any Java or C++ in what feels like forever. I don't necessarily need to use these languages, so I'm entirely open to suggestion. I was given an email list by a client to import into their mailchimp account yesterday and unfortunately, Mailchimp couldn't read the file. It's a text file, but I don't believe it's tab delimited (which would make this much, much easier for me). A small portion of the file (I've changed last names and email addresses) can be viewed here: http://sparktoignite.com/patients.txt If anyone has suggestions on how I can get this into a Mailchimp readable format (csv, tab delimited txt, excel) please let me know. I feel like 3 years ago I would've been able to do this in a matter of minutes, but given that I haven't touched anything other than RoR, PHP, and jQuery for the last few years, I don't know where to start. • JQuery Autocomplete only suggesting first row

  I'm doing research using JQuery's Autocomplete plugin and Google Maps' API. What I have so far is located here. I'm using Asp.net MVC to generate the list of potential address matches (limited to US addresses only) and presenting them as a pipe-delimeted list to Autocomplete, which is supposed to be .spliting them up and suggesting them to the user. The problem I'm having (besides a stubborn IE-only javascript error, which I'll break into another question), is that only the first result is suggested. This page clearly shows two results, yet typing "3118" into the textbox produces only the Galax Dr result. How can I get Automplete to produce both results?

• merging two duplicate contacts/ColdFusion

  having to do with data integrity - I maintain a coldfusion database at a small shop that keeps addresses of different contacts. These contacts sometimes contain notes in them. When you are merging two duplicate contacts, one may be created in 2002 and one in 2008. If the contact in 2002 has notes prior to 2008, my question would be does it matter if you merge these contacts and keep the 2008 contact's ID number? Would that affect the data integrity or create any sort of issues with the notes earlier than 2008? I hope I've accurately described my scenario, as I am not familiar with the proper technical terms. • Best placement for javascript in Asp.net MVC app that heavily uses partial views

  What is the best place for javascript that is specific to a partial view? For example, if I have a partial view (loaded via ajax call) with some divs and I want to turn those divs into an accordian, would it be better put the $("#section").accordion() in script tags inside of the partial view, or in a .js file in the function that retrieves that partial view and inserts it into the DOM? Obviously, common methods I will be keeping in a .js file, however I am more talking about javascript very specific to the partial view itself. Most things I find on the net seem to say to put all javascript into a separate .js but nothing addresses the idea of partial views.

• PDB file from different versions of Visual Studio

  I have an old DLL file which was built with VC++ 6. Now I need to investigate the dump file but I don't have its PDB available. The stacktrace reported by WinDbg is also inaccurate. Is it possible to rebuild the project with later versions of Visual Studio i.e. 2003, 2005, 2008, have the PDB generated, and use this to map addresses to symbols in the old DLL? Is there something like VC 6.0 compatible mode for building project? Obtaining VC++ 6 is one option, but it looks like VS6.0 has already vanished from MSDN subscriber download page :( Thanks!

• How to add dimensions to dynamic img elements

  I use a Json call to get a list of image addresses, then I add them individually to a div like this. <div id="container"> <img src="A.jpg" alt="" /> <img src="B.jpg" alt="" /> ... </div> Unfortunately the image dimension is not part of the Json information but I do need them for later JQuery DOM interactivity. Do any of you JQuery geniuses know of a code that would flawlessly add the width and height to the individual image elements in the container after they load? I was thinking maybe the code could wait for the images to have a width bigger than 5px then add the new width and height to the element. But I wouldn't know how to go about that and make it work stably. Thank you so much!

• GDB question - how do I go through disassembled code line by line?

  I'd like to go through a binary file my teacher gave me line by line to check addresses on the stack and the contents of different registers, but I'm not extremely familiar with using gdb. Although I have the C code, we're supposed to work entirely from a binary file. Here are the commands I've used so far: (gdb) file SomeCode Which gives me this message: Reading symbols from ../overflow/SomeCode ...(no debugging symbols found)...done. Then I use : (gdb) disas main which gives me all of the assembly. I wanted to set up a break point and use the "next" command, but none of the commands I tried work. Does anyone know the syntax I would use?

  just want to verify that database partition is implemented only at the database level, when we query a partitioned table, we still do our normal query, nothing special with our queries, the optimization is performed automatically when parsing the query, is that correct? e.g. we have a table called 'address' with a column called 'country_code' and 'city'. so if i want to get all the addresses in New York, US, normally i wound do something like this: select * from address where country_code = 'US' and city = 'New York' if now the table is partitioned by 'country_code', and i know that now the query will only be executed on the partition which contains country_code = US. My question is do I need to explicitly specify the partition to query in my sql statement? or i still use the previous statement and the db server will optimize it automatically? Thanks in advance!

• removing duplicate strings from a massive array in java efficiently?

  I'm considering the best possible way to remove duplicates from an (Unsorted) array of strings - the array contains millions or tens of millions of stringz..The array is already prepopulated so the optimization goal is only on removing dups and not preventing dups from initially populating!! I was thinking along the lines of doing a sort and then binary search to get a log(n) search instead of n (linear) search. This would give me nlogn + n searches which althout is better than an unsorted (n^2) search = but this still seems slow. (Was also considering along the lines of hashing but not sure about the throughput) Please help! Looking for an efficient solution that addresses both speed and memory since there are millions of strings involved without using Collections API!

  Right now I have the following query: SELECT name, COUNT(name), time, price, ip, SUM(price) FROM tablename WHERE time >= $yesterday AND time <$today GROUP BY name And what I'd like to do is add a DISTINCT by column 'ip', i.e. SELECT DISTINCT ip FROM tablename So my final output would be all the columns, from all the rows that where time is today, grouped by name (with name count for each repeating name) and no duplicate ip addresses. What should my query look like? (or alternatively, how can I add the missing filter to the output with php)? Thanks in advance.
