  My local computer technician installed his store's copy of Window's 7 Premium on my computer. I had been using Window's Vista; but needed the XP component of "7" As part of the price I paid; I have a fully licensed, unopened "7" disc; with all of the drivers included. The technician warned me about the "nag" screen; that asks me to install my licensed copy at any time. Without thinking; I downloaded all of my usual software programs before installing the licensed copy. Here is my question: I hope this won't sound obvious: Will it overwrite my downloads?

• Environment variable for volume names in Windows?

  I'm trying to write a batch file that will look at the volume label of the current drive and report if it's not equivalent to a certain string. Is there a default variable in the shell for this? Can I define one? Am I SOL and I'll actually have to do some (shudder) programming? EDIT: If this is possible in PowerShell that would work fine. (For the curious, we ship our machines with software cloning as a rapid bootable backup solution since most of our customers are daytraders and aren't interested in RAID due to urgency of getting-the-hell-back-to-work-right-away if there's a software corruption problem, and we want to make it immediately obvious if they're booting to the backup drive unintentionally, like say the primary failed entirely. The hope was just to write a simple batch file that would autostart on boot and throw a warning in the event of a problem.)

• Recover an accidentaly closed Opera window after restarting Opera?

  Hello there and thanks for all the help! I accidentaly closed a window with multiple tabs in Opera. There was another window with a couple of tabs running. I have closed and restarted Opera in the hope it will retrieve the windows at startup (it usually asks if I want to continue from last time). Is there a way I can retrieve my closed window with all the tabs? I cannot see them in the history either, probably because When I switched-on my PC the Internet connection was down and the pages didn't load :-/

  Hi, i am not very familiar with raid partitons and am not even sure if this is the right place to ask about it, but i hope that if it is not that some one can point me on the right direction. This is my situation, i have 2 500 GB hds and a 3ware pci-e hardware for raid and i wanted to make a RAID 1 but i dont know if i can make more then one partition for it, for instance: MAIN HD: os partition: 100GB data partition: rest of left size and make the RAID 1 either work on all the HD or just on the data partition of it. that is on windows xp sp3 and the 3ware allows bootable raid.

• virtual box strectch to fit resolution

  Hey guys I have a really annoying problem, that I hope someone has figured out. I just installed ubuntu on virtual box and installed the guest additions so everything was great. I had a resolution that stretched across my screen from left to right and the only virtual box components that were visible were the windows vista title bar : minimize/exit/maximize buttons and virtual box controls at the bottom. Now all of a sudden now that I have installed the ubuntu 170mb of automatic updates, I see vertical and horizontal scroll bars that are part of virtual box and the ubuntu resolution will not stretch across my screen anymore. What I want is a ubuntu resolution that will stretch to fit the maximized window of virtual box, and remove the scroll bars. If anyone has any ideas, I would really appreciate it.

• How to make a server check it's own availability on the web?

  Hi all, Just a quick question – my server is running at my house serving www pages at www.javawag.com. The problem is that my home internet connection keeps dropping randomly - for about 10 mins at a time. This is only an intermittent problem and will go away soon I hope. However, my server doesn't recover properly - when the connection comes back, I can still access it at 192.168.0.8 (locally) without any issue, but at www.javawag.com there's no reply! (Just an aside - my home internet connection is dynamic ISP, the domain www.javawag.com points to javawag.dyndns.org which in turn points to my IP, updated every minute by ddclient on the server) Is there some way for the server to check if it's accessible from the outside world periodically, and if not restart Apache/reboot? Oh, and if I reboot the problem fixes itself also! Javawag

• Troubleshooting "connection reset" error on my linux server

  I fervently hope someone here can help me with the problem I am experiencing. I am a programmer, and I have very little understanding of linux sysadmin terminology/concepts. I am attempting to troubleshoot a problem with my website. It is a Facebook app, and whenever I try to connect using Chrome, I get an error stating that the "connection was reset". I have been Googling for four days straight trying to find a solution to this problem, but no joy. A big part of the problem is that I do not understand the terminology being employed, and the output from many of the tools referenced is likewise indecipherable to me. I am running a VPS with CentOS 5, apache, PHP, and MySQL. I could spam this post with a ton of information from my iptables, apache, etc but if anyone needs information from my server, please let me know how to get it, and I will post it here. • Logitech MX3200 keyboard stopped working

  I have a Logitech MX3200 wireless keyboard and mouse set, and keyboard stopped working. I was working with it and it just stopped in the middle of using it. Some notes: The mouse still works flawlessly, i've tried to reconnect the KB i've tried to reconnect everything, mouse reconnects, keyboard reconnects (or pretends to) I've tried to hard reset (holding the connect button on the receiver for 10 seconds). I've tried new batteries I took out the batteries out of the KB & Mouse and unplugged the receiver over night. The media keys still work (launches winamp) but they main keys does not At this point, i've tried everything I've seen online. I just want to know is my keyboard dead in the water? I would say it's been about 8 months to a year since i've bought it, and the articles i find on the internet all say that's as long as they last... is this true? what's everyone's experience? I hope it's not true.

• ACHI drivers for W8.1 with amd

  I hope you can help me... I just installed a SSD (Samsung EVO 840) and windows 8.1 pro in my pc with M5A99X EVO ( chipset AMD 990X/SB950 ) motherboard. The SSD is installed in sata3 socket using a sata3 wire. The AHCI mode is ON in the bios. I configured the ahci controller and now device administrator looks like this: All works, but the speed of the SDD is very slow (like a HDD). Samsung magician doesn't recognize the sata mode neither the ahci. I tried to install more drivers but the system broke and I need to reinstall windows :( I tried many things from the web, but any works: Modify windows registy Use compatibility mode Modify the amd drivers and install it unsigned Thank you for your time!! • Songbird too damn slow, at least on my mac

  I've read on few places that Songbird is no good with more than some thousands of library items because it starts getting quite slow. Well, in my case (which is a clean install) I've imported 17k items (which I know is not that much) and instead of becoming just too slow it frequently gets to not responding for several minutes until getting back to its senses again. That's for whichever random operation such as deleting 1 item from library. I've also read on few more places that gives very little hope on fixing this issue, but I wonder... Is there any way to tweak it and make it work as fast as expected? Am I missing something or is this just a complete and utterly useless piece of software for libraries with more than 10 thousand thingies?

• Weird behaviour/rendering of backspace in Terminal.app when SSHing into zsh using tmux/screen

  Hi there, I just stumbled upon a weird problem. When I SSH into my server (centos, zsh) and I type some stuff and hit backspace It looks like a space - but internally it really deleted the characters. ls -l a Note that the space between land a is actually when I hit backspace. When I now hit return ls -a gets executed. This is only in zsh, in bash it works fine. Hope anyone has an idea what this is all about and how to fix this. Update: Only happens when using tmux/screen

• Intel hybrid graphics stuck in power save mode

  I have an Asus UL30V with Intel hybrid graphics. When I bought it it used to switch to turn of the better graphics card to save power and run on a more power effecient one. When I connected the laptop to a power source again I could go to the intel graphics icon on the task bar and click on "switch to enhanced performance mode" or something similar. But like 2-3 months ago it suddenly vanished. I cannot switch modes anymore, it's gotten stuck in power save mode. I can change the windows power setting but that doesn't enable the better graphics card :( What should I do? I've tried restarting the computer and that does not work. I really hope I don't have to reinstall the drivers! • Need solutions in sharing a 3Mb/768Kbps DSL line to 60+ users and faster bandwidth

  Two parts. Part 1: We currently have 2 DSL Lines with 3Mb/768Kbps speeds load balanced for 60+ users. Accessing the Internet is borderline unusable. The simple solution would be to get a faster DSL Line but the highest DSL package is 6Mb/768Kbps, has quite the price jump, and doesn't do anything to help with upload speeds. I'm looking for free or extremely low cost solutions (web cache, traffic shaping, bandwidth controls, etc) to help with making Internet access more bearable until the next funding year. Can anyone give any advice? Part 2: We're looking into a 4.5Mb bonded T1 in the next funding year which is of course significantly more expensive than 2 DSL lines. Are bonded T1s our only hope for faster speeds? Are there any better alternatives?

  I hope I phrased this correctly. lshw gives: description: DIMM Synchronous 400 MHz (2.5 ns) product: M378B5773CH0-CH9 vendor: Samsung physical id: 0 slot: DIMM0 size: 2GiB width: 64 bits clock: 400MHz (2.5ns) And indeed the memory speed is set is set to 800MHz in the BIOS, which I think makes sense since it is a double rate. On the other hand, Googling strongly suggests that to this product number corresponds the PC3-10600 type, which is 1333MHz, not 800MHz. And this seems to be confirmed in the BIOS, where if I select Auto for memory bus speed, 1333MHz is selected "based on SPD settings". However in the latter case, the computer does not boot, i.e. the kernel panics, complaining that something attempted to kill the Idle process. So, I am I am beginning to suspect that I have been given defective memory, the technician that installed saw this, and lowered the bus speed. Is this a possibility?

• How can I redirect URLs using the proxy module in Apache?

  This seems like a super-basic question but I am having a hard time tracking down a straightforward solution, so appreciate any help and patience with me on this: I want to configure my Apache proxy server to redirect certain URLs so that, for example, a web browser HTTP request for www.olddomain.com gets passed to the proxy server which then routes the request to www.newdomain.com which sends a response to the proxy server which then passes it back to the web browser. Seems so simple, yet I don't see how to achieve this on Apache. I know Squid/Squirm offer this functionality so am guessing I am missing something really basic. I know I can use RewriteRule to dynamically modify the URL and pass it to the proxy server, but I effectively want to do the reverse, whereby the proxy server receives the original URL, applies the RewriteRule, and then forwards the HTTP request to the new URL. Hope that makes sense. Thanks in advance for any help.

  I would like to be able to set up offlineimap to do the following Sync Remote/INBOX - Local Sync Local/Maildirs/* - Remote Possible? The use case here is: I download all new mail from my remote IMAP INBOX folder with offlineimap. offlineimap's posthook command calls a custom python script which does junk filtering, then sorts and categorizes my mail in the local INBOX folder to various local maildirs based on sender, etc. I read my mail with mutt and perhaps do some more categorization. ? Step 4 is what I'm after. I want offlineimap to push my local changes (categorization, filtering, deletion in the case of spam) back to the various folders on the imap server, but as you can see, there's no need for me to be pulling any changes from folders other than Remote/INBOX, as no changes happen on the IMAP server itself. I hope that's a clear explanation of the problem.

• WD Passport Won't Mount

  My WD Passport won't mount. However, it turns on when plugged into my macbook and doesn't make any strange noises. It took a small fall (just a few inches and it was on my couch) and I'm very concerned about physical damage. When I open up disk utility it shows the root 500 GB WD My Passport drive which seems to be OK when I verify it and repair it. However, the "External Hard Drive", the directory underneath the "500 GB WD My Passport drive" is grayed out. When I verify the External Hard Drive it says it needs to be rapaired. When I try and repair it it gives me the following message and does not seem to progress: "Updating boot support partitions for the volume as required." Is there hope for me recovering my data? I stupidly have important data on it that I don't have anywhere else.

  In Windows 7, the window title's color (by default black, to see the title in the title bar fire up Windows Media Player for example) is stored in [HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Control Panel\Desktop\Colors] TitleText value. This is not the case in Windows 8, since this value is only used when using high contrast theme. It looks like noone has come up with a way to change this color yet, so my question is, where to look?   I need help in removing binary package that had been installed in my linux machine. The scenario that I am having are such as like this: I've already install latest apache that I get from its website(httpd.apache.org) through Unix binary package(tar.gz) After successfully install program,the apache server web perfectly without any issues. But then I having a thought,if there are another latest release version of apache in the future,then I need to make sure that i can upgrading current apache or reinstalling the new version apache. So my question is, how do I ensure that I have remove the old remove apache and all its dependencies so that it will not having conflict(probably) when installing the new apache. Right now the only thing that i can think of is to remove all the apache folder manually : rm -rf /apache2 Hope someone can shed some light about this.Thanks.
