• Map a drive to root of a server (\\sever) in Vista

  Hi, In Win XP, I can very easily map a network drive to the root of my NAS server. I browse to it in Explorer (\192.168.1.70), choose "Map Network Drive", choose the drive letter, done. In Vista, this does not seem possible. I have to go "Map Network Drive" from 'Computer', then enter the address, but it will only let me map to specific shares (sub-folders off of the server root) and NOT to the server root share. Since my NAS has built-in shares (music, photo, video, etc.) then I would have to have drive letters for all of these, which I absolutely don't want. Can anyone tell me - how come I can easily map to the server root from XP, but not in Vista? Is there something fundamentally different in the networking across the two OS's? Or do I just need to do things a different way? Hope someone can help. Thanks, AT

• Install/import SSL certificate on Windows Server 2003/IIS 6.0

  Hi A couple of months ago we ordered an SSL certificate for a client's server using the request guide in IIS 6.0. This worked fine and the guide was completed when we received the certificate. But about 2 weeks ago the server crashed and had to be restored. Now I can't seem to get the site running. I have the .cer file, but what is the correct procedure to import the the certificate? • I would like to know if someone has applescript to loop al my stickynotes and put it in a textfile

  I have been meaning to do this for a while, but I never got around to do it. The problem is that I have to do research how applescript works. Anyway, I have now collected over 200 snippets for my programming, but I need to sort them out Putting them all in a textfile with some obvious breaks inbetween I could sort them and tag them for another snippet programm. • Error mounting samba share, cannot mount block device xxxx read-only

  After installing Ubuntu 12.04, I'm trying to mount a samba share from Windows under Linux, using a scripted command that's always worked, and the server hasn't changed. The error is as follows: $ mount -t cifs //<host>/<share> /media/<share> -o username=<user>,password=<pass> mount: block device //<host>/<share> is write-protected, mounting read-only mount: cannot mount block device //<host>/<share> read-only $ I've read a lot of discussions about permissions, but unfortunately, that wasn't the issue. I'm submitting my own answer below for reference, hope this helps someone else.

• any security tips for my first server? (complete beginner)

  I'm paying for a VPS and hoping to launch my first website on it in the next few days. I'm worried there might be some glaringly obvious security holes in the standard setup, so I'm keen to get some tips About the only thing i know is turn off error reporting in PHP and create users/privilages for MySQL... any more stuff along those lines? I'm using: cpanel and WHM centos 5 php mysql google apps as mail server (so maybe i should disable built in mailer server somehow?!!)   I didn't realise how world wide the users of the site are. I am based in England and will be helping out at an International Camp for young people in Finland this summer. I will be in charge off an game where we will have 1500 young people searcing for these CD's that will be hidden all over the camp site. They will have to find them and bringing them back to base one at a time. The young people will be divided into 5 teams and the team that brings back the most gets a prize. Hope this helps and allows me to put the reequest back on the site. I have tried to source them in Finland but have had no success.

• Average mail quota usage: tricks to implement unlimited email quota.

  I suppose that hosters who provides unlimited mail quota are only claiming it unlimited, and hope that they won't run out of disk space. Correct me if I'm wrong. In order to do such trick they will have probably to calculate the average real quota used by the average user. Let's say on a 100 GB space hosting I offer to 20 x 1GB emails, obviously if all user fill their mail my server would stop working cause they would require 200 GB, but I think I can expect this trick to work cause it will never happen (or it's extermly unprobable) that all user fills up all their mails. But the QUESTTIONS are: What's the average email usage? Can we say that a user normally fills up 1/2 or 1/3 of the quota you provide him? Thanks to any answers/suggetions you might provide.

• How to make a server check it's own availability on the web?

  Hi all, Just a quick question – my server is running at my house serving www pages at www.javawag.com. The problem is that my home internet connection keeps dropping randomly - for about 10 mins at a time. This is only an intermittent problem and will go away soon I hope. However, my server doesn't recover properly - when the connection comes back, I can still access it at 192.168.0.8 (locally) without any issue, but at www.javawag.com there's no reply! (Just an aside - my home internet connection is dynamic ISP, the domain www.javawag.com points to javawag.dyndns.org which in turn points to my IP, updated every minute by ddclient on the server) Is there some way for the server to check if it's accessible from the outside world periodically, and if not restart Apache/reboot? Oh, and if I reboot the problem fixes itself also! Javawag

• Macbook Pro 2.2ghz 2011 (OSX 10.6.7) problem with NTFS 3G

  I installed NTFS 3G but now get the following error message when I try to plug in my external drive. I also get it on startup about my Windows partition. Uninstall/ reinstall does not work. NTFS-3G could not mount /dev/disk1s1at /volumes/freeagent GoFlex Drive because the following error occured: /library/filesystems/fuse.fs/support/fusefs.kext failed to load- (libkern/kext) link error; check the system/ kernel logs for errors or try kextutil(8). The MacFUSE file system is not available (71) Any help would be great. I'd hope to avoid reinstalling OS X if possible!

• Domino 8.5.3: Attaching an Object Residing on Server (Lotusscript preferred)

  Not sure if this question is more appropriate for ServerFault or StackOverflow, sorry if it should belong elsewhere! I am working on an application and one of the function is to automatically send an email with an attachment. I can code the application to attach the object when it resides on local or on a mapped drive. Newbie Question: Is there a way to have the object reside on the Domino server, and still be able to point to it and have the application automatically attach and send? Is there any method that allows me to do this? Users have no direct access to the server/filesystem, so mapped drive of the Domino server is out of the question. Hope someone can shed some light on this question. Thanks!

• Virtual system drive is split between separate LUNs

  My hardware VMWare guy told me that a Win2008R2 server I have has a D drive that is split between two separate LUNs. He could not tell me if that's a good thing or bad just that it's not standard practice for him. Would you please explain the benefits or drawbacks of this setup? Thanks EDIT Some additional info. What happened was I had D drive already allocated. Then I asked for more. They said there's no more space on whatever LUN my D drive is on so the option they gave me was that part of the D drive will be on one LUN and other part will be on another LUN. Hope that helps

  Thanks in advance. Well i have a laptop of IBM thinkpad x32. Windowx xp installed. So, the problem is that: The basic problem is the Black Screen but it's not means that laptop doesn't power-up or boot-up, sometimes after booting, screen will off and notable thing is that after black screen computer is still running all keyboard lights are on, and when i tried to again start it, it will boot ok but after some time screen will gone, and sometimes this happens during booting screen, even sometimes screen black out at win XP user login page, means after some seconds or min screen will gone. • Unable to edit/delete/move /etc/my.cnf - Permission denied

  I am trying to edit /etc/my.cnf as root user via ssh and I get following error while trying to save it I ma making changes to my.cnf as I want to tweak some values in my.cnf to meet Magento requirement like changing key_buffer_size= to higher value (128M). I assigned the value 128M to key_buffer_size= and tried to save it and then got an error. "Error writing /etc/my.cnf: Permission denied" I cant even restart MySQL successfully. [root@flourish ~]# service mysqld restart Stopping mysqld: [ OK ] MySQL Daemon failed to start. Starting mysqld: [FAILED] I can even delete or replace it with the fresh one. I tried uninstalling MySQL and re-installing but nothing worked. Permission -rw-r--r-- and Owner/Group root/root I hope there is some answer to this problem.

• Analyse frequencies of date ranges in Google Spreadsheet

  I have a Google Spreadsheet where I would like to compute occurrences of date ranges. As you can see in my sheet, there is a column date_utc+1 which contains almost random date data. What I would like to do is put the date values into bins of 6 hours each, i.e., 12/5/2012 23:57:04 until 12/6/2012 0:03:17 would be in the first bin, 12/6/2012 11:20:53 until 12/6/2012 17:17:07 in the second bin, and so forth. Then, I would like to count the occurrence of those bins, such as bin_from bin_to freq ----------------------------------------------- 12/5/2012 23:57:04 12/6/2012 0:03:17 2 12/6/2012 11:20:53 12/6/2012 17:17:07 19 ... ... ... Hope it is clear what I mean. Partial hints are very welcome as well since I am pretty new to spreadsheeting.

However all good wikis seem to require a web-server of some kind; has anyone come across a good desktop wiki editor/viewer that work with plain-text files, and allow me to work with wiki text files just like any other document file type (note: not a desktop wiki running inside a local webserver) Before you rush to suggest (I hope!) I have done months of research on this and have tried Wixi, Wikidpad, zulupad.... Any ideas anyone?

• What causes random clicking/navigation sound while PC is idle?

  On my Dell D630 laptop running Windows XP Pro SP3, I randomly hear the "Windows Navigation Start.wav" played. This happens even if the only application active on the PC at the time is Microsoft Outlook and no one is touching the keyboard or touchpad. The start navigation sound IS enabled for Internet Explorer (I have IE 7 installed), but it is not running (no window open, anyway). The clicks are rapid, as if being executed automatically by a script or process, and they always come in threes: "click-click, click". I don't see any changes on the display and I don't know how to figure out what's running that could cause this. I have tried to leave Windows Task Manager open in the hope that I'll see a process name jump to the top of the list briefly, but it doesn't happen that often and I guess I'm not quick enough. The PC is slower than I think it should be, but System Idle Process is at 96 - 99 during the event, and for most of the time when I'm not actually using the machine. Any ideas?

• which vista services can be disabled with impunity?

  I use Vista on a HP pavilion DV2 laptop. When I look through all the services my laptop starts, it really seems there's way too much of it. I multi boot with XP and 7. Both startup in 40 seconds. Vista takes four minutes. Is there some software that can determine which services I don't need? On 7, there's no propietary HP stuff at all, yet it seems to run fine. Because all these service, there's a LOT of them and some just sit there doing nothing, monitoring for updates I don't really need or want or need to know about the second they're available. my laptop is the only computer i use at home, there's no home network, aside from the modem-router, which is cabled, not wifi. Take for instance Parental controls, and stuff for people with bad eyesight, Tablet PC. I really never use any of that stuff. Hope this question is specific enough. thanks, Gwen.

• Authentication issues setting up iRedMail on Debian

  I'm setting up an exchange server using iRedMail. Following the official iRedMail installation guide (http://www.iredmail.org/install_iredmail_on_debian.html) and the Digital Ocean guide (https://www.digitalocean.com/community/articles/how-to-install-iredmail-on-ubuntu-12-04-x64) I was able to install iRedMail without any problems, so I have all the services up and running. I can configure domains and emails using iRedAdmin BUT I have problem both sending and receiving email, what I get from Roundcube is 'Authentication error' when trying to send an email. Also I can't receive anything. I also tried to connect to the mx server using telnet, it connects, but after the STARTTLS command, when I start to write "MAIL FROM:" the connection is lost. Something in the configuration is not working (at the moment I have the configuration written by the iRedMail installation) but I do not know where, I hope someone can enlight me! Thank you

• Mini-jack problem with Sony Vaio (running XP)

  I have a five year old Sony Vaio laptop (vgn-fw31m) that has had impact damage to the audio-output mini-jack for about the last year or so. In a recent discussion with my brother, we wondered whether it would be possible to write a program that would enable windows to use the microphone mini-jack input as the audio-output? As I currently use this laptop for work I am not keen to risk pulling it apart in order to replace the components comprising the audio-out. I therefore 'hope' that a programming solution exists. • Xnest from Mac OSX to HP UX

  Hi, I'm trying to connect to my HP/UX machine from Mac OS X using Xnest. The problem is that I can not get the keyboard to work. I can see the login-prompt, but unable to type in my username. The connection is done by: Xnest :1 -query 192.168.0.193 -geometry 1280x1024 and it gives me some errors: (EE) AIGLX error: dlopen of /usr/X11/lib/dri/swrast_dri.so failed (dlopen(/usr/X11/lib/dri/swrast_dri.so, 5): image not found) (EE) GLX: could not load software renderer (EE) XKB: Couldn't open rules file /usr/X11/share/X11/xkb/rules/base (EE) XKB: No components provided for device Virtual core keyboard Couldn't get keyboard. • Backing up Windows 2003 Server that has Certificate Authority

  I want to export and migrate a Certificate Authority CA role from a Windows 2003 machine to a new copy of Windows 2008 R2 virtual machine. I was told that I cannot have 2 CA roles on the same network at the same time. Therefore, I must first export the certificates on the older machine, delete the CA role, then add the CA role on the new machine and import the certificates into it. As a safety precaution, I am tasked to find a backup solution in case this does not work and I need to revert back to the old Windows 2003 CA. My question is: What is the best software for doing this type of backup? I am currently trying out Symantec Backup Exec 2012. Which I hope will allow me to create a backup prior to removing CA role on Windows 2003. If this CA migration fails, the backup will allow me to revert the old machine to a time before I removed its CA role.

• How to bypass Forefront TMG for downloading from Adobe Cloud

  I hope that this question has not been asked as I've spent a couple of days googling around trying to find a solution. I have one computer that needs to download from Adobe Cloud to install applications like Photoshop etc... The issue I'm having is that Adobe uses a download manager program (AdobeApplicationManager.exe) that just keeps incrementing the time left on the download of any app like Photoshop. Is there a way to allow just the download manager from that one computer to bypass any filtering settings in Forefront TMG 2010? I have very little knowledge of servers / ISA servers / Forefront TMG and have been thrown into this position by luck I guess. Any help with this would be highly appreciated. Thanks in advance.

• changing filesystem format from jfx to ext4 without losing data

  I have a fresh Lucid Lynx (Ubuntu 10.04) running on a laptop. where I defined the filesystems as: mount point / on ext4 (46 Gb) mount point /home on jfs (63 GB) swap as 3 Gb I left the machine over night to do some task, without AC power supply. next day in the morning I found it on standby, task completed, but filesystem was not reachable. it gave me I/O error it seems that there is a problem with jfs and standby. anyways, to avoid any hassle, I want to move this mount point from jfs format to ext4. can I do this without losing data and without the need to place the data in a temporary location until transformation is done? sorry to mention that, but I recall back in the windows days, we would change a FAT16 to FAT32 or a FAT32 to NTFS without having to lose the data. I hope this is available on Linux.
