• Operation not permitted when starting Unicorn

  I've created an nginx/unicorn/capistrato setup on Ubuntu (Amazon EC2) by following mostly this guide. I guess everything is set up like it should but when I start Unicorn I get (a LOT of) this error in the log: E, [2012-09-08T08:57:20.658092 #12356] ERROR -- : Operation not permitted (Errno::EPERM) /home/deployer/apps/bridgekalenderen.no/shared/bundle/ruby/1.9.1/gems/unicorn-4.3.1/lib/unicorn/worker.rb:82:in `initgroups' I see it's related to the user's permissions but I just can't figure out what I've left out. The server starts up nicely if I start it with sudo (or, rvmsudo, really). The user has sudo capabilities, I have chmod'ed the app several times so the file permissions there should be ok. The unicorn socket in /tmp is owned by the deployer user, so that shouldn't be the problem either. Does anybody have a clue where to look?

• PostgreSQL 9.1 Database Replication Between Two Production Environments with Load Balancer

  I'm investigating different solutions for database replication between two PostgreSQL 9.1 databases. The setup will include two production servers on the cloud (Amazon EC2 X-Large Instances), with an elastic load balancer. What is the typical database implementation for for this type of setup? A master-master replication (with Bucardo or rubyrep)? Or perhaps use only one shared database between the two environments, with a shared disk failover? I've been getting some ideas from http://www.postgresql.org/docs/9.0/static/different-replication-solutions.html. Since I don't have a lot of experience in database replication, I figured I would ask the experts. What would you recommend for the described setup?

• DNS Help (CNAMEs and A Records)

  I'm trying to set up my DNS properly so that I can have hosting through PHPFog and email services using MailGun. PHPFog has us redirect the naked domain to the www and then use a CNAME to point the www to PHPFog and mailgun provides the MX records to use. The problem I'm having is that I have no A record set up on Hover because when I do, the CNAME no longer works (?), or at least it seems that way because I am no longer seeing my site from PHPFog, I'm seeing a Hover landing page. I know all the records I need, I just can't seem to get them to play nicely together. I've been told Amazon's Route 53 should be able to solve my problem, but I haven't yet figured out how. I just need to have hosting at PHPFog and email services through MailGun. As you can probably tell, I have only a very limited understanding of DNS, so forgive me if this is a silly question.

  We currently run Lucid on top of Xen. Using debootstrap, we have created many jailed environments for Lucid (10.04), Maverick (10.10) and Natty (11.04). We're considering creating an Oneiric environment as well. However, we're beginning to wonder what the consequences of doing so are. What incompatibilities should we watch out for? The Lucid base runs on the 2.6.32 Kernel, and happens to be running on Amazon EC2 (Xen). We realize that Oneiric when installed from scratch comes with the 3.0 Kernel. Also, if we were to upgrade the Lucid base to Oneiric (including the Kernel), what would we have to watch out for to ensure that the Lucid, Maverick, and Natty jailed environments still work fine?

• How do I get a hold of the Reply-To header and remunge it in postfix

  I have a legacy application that emails via php. 5% of the emails aren't going through. The solution is to route all email through a fancy verified mail server like Amazon's SES. I am having some trouble implementing this functionality. It seems this guy had a similar problem. My question is where in postfix can I set a filter that will take as input the the message headers, so that I can manually set the From field and the Reply-To field to [email protected] and [email protected], respectively. Where whatever_php_wants is dictated by the php program and the users registration email. I know where to set the noreply portion, but I don't know the exact place in postfix's configuration files where I can intercept complete emails and pass them to a script. • Postgres 9.0 locking up, 100% CPU

  We are having a problem where our Postgres 9.0 server occasionally locks up and kills our webapp. Restarting Postgres fixes the problem. Here's what I've been able to observe: First, usage of one CPU jumps to 100% for a few minutes Disk operations drop to ~0 during this time Database operations drop to 0 (blocks and tuples per sec) Logs show during this time: WARNING: worker took too long to start; cancelled WARNING: worker took too long to start; cancelled No Queries in logs (only those over 200ms are logged) No unusually long-running queries logged before or during Then the second CPU jumps to 100% The number of postgres processes jumps from the usual 8-10 to ~20 Matched by a spike in Postgres Blocks per second (about twice normal) Logs show LOG: could not accept SSL connection: EOF detected Queries are running but slow Restarting postgres returns everything to normal Setup: Server: Amazon EC2 Large Ubuntu 10.04.2 LTS Postgres 9.0.3 Dedicated DB server Does anyone have any idea what's causing this? Or any suggestions about what else I should be checking out?

• Transition domain to new web host without waiting for DNS propagation

  I was considering switching to Amazon EC2 to host my website to handle more traffic. It seems like I would have to update DNS records to point to the new server but I was wondering if there was a way to avoid having to wait for the new DNS record to propagate. Putting the code on both hosts would not work for me since the app writes to a database pretty frequently. I thought about just using a meta redirect or php redirect on the old host to redirect to the new host ip but was wondering if there's a better more accepted way of doing this.

• Is it possible to a VM inside a VM (e.g., KVM on Vmware)?

  I'd like to do some development on Eucalyptus, an open source project which provides an Amazon EC2 interface for launching virtual machine instances on a collection of privately managed nodes. I'd really like to be able to do some of the development on my desktop, rather than having to deploy Eucalyptus on our shared local cluster each time I make a change to the source code. (Especially since there are a group of us sharing that test cluster). Unfortunately, my desktop machine is a Mac, which won't run Eucalyptus natively. I do have VMWare Fusion, and it would be really nice if I could do my Eucalyptus testing inside a VMWare instance. The problem is, to test out Eucalyptus, it will have to launch (KVM or Xen) VM instances. I've got no idea if it's possible to actually launch a KVM or Xen instance inside a VMWare instance.

We've got the model 3 ones, but can't find the driver disc and using the Windows Hardware Installation Wizard gets me no where! Can you help me to find the driver? When I've used it at my old school it had a piece of software called the Digital Movie Creator, which I've heard you can use to make stop-motion films, which is what I want to do!   I have an Nginx and Passenger setup that is proving problematic. At relatively low loads the server seems to get backed up and start churning results like this into the error.log: connect() to unix:/passenger_helper_server failed (11: Resource temporarily unavailable) while connecting to upstream My passenger setup is: passenger_min_instances 2; passenger_pool_idle_time 1200; passenger_max_pool_size 20; I have done some digging, and it looks like the CPU gets pegged. Memory usage seems fine passenger_memory_stats shows at most about 700MB being used, but CPU approaches 100%. is this enough to cause this type of error? Should i bring the pool size down? Are there other configuration settings I should be looking at? Any help appreciated Other pertinent information: Amazon EC2 Small Instance Ubuntu 10.10 Nginx (latest stable) Passenger (latest stable) Rails 3.0.4

• Web browser being selective about the sites that it will visit.

  I've been trying to help my father-in-law with this problem but haven't been able to get anywhere. Since the weekend the web browsers on his computer (Chrome and Internet Explorer on Windows XP) will only let him get to certain sites - for example, he is able to conduct his online banking but he cannot visit www.bbc.co.uk, www.amazon.co.uk or www.ancestry.com. There is another computer in the house that goes via the same router and this can connect to both, which suggests it is his machine. I tried running a tracert to www.bbc.co.uk and managed to get through, but the web browser hangs with a message that it is waiting for a response. I tried using the WinSockFix tool in case it was anything to do with a recent registry change but that didn't work either. He can't think of anything that he recently did on his machine to cause the problem. Can anyone help?

• How to change MySQL data directory?

  I want to place my databases in another directory, so I can store them in an ESB (elastic block storage, just a fancy name for a virtualized harddisk) together with my web-apps and other persistent data. I have tried to walk through a tutorial at http://crashmag.net/change-the-default-mysql-data-directory-with-selinux-enabled. Everything seems fine until I type this command: # semanage fcontext -a -t mysqld_db_t "/srv/mysql(/.*)?" Then the command fails and tells me that mysqld_db_t is an invalid SELinux context even if the default MySQL data directory is labelled with this context. I am running Fedora 15 on Virtualbox (behaves like an ordinary x86-compatible box) and Amazon EC2 (based on Xen) so the tutorial should be compatible. It is also worth to mention that turning off SELinux globally or just for the MySQL process is not an option, because such a solution will decrease the security of the system if a hacker gains access to the system via the MySQL server. I have never seen this problem before I changed to the Redhat/Fedora architecture, so it could be a distribution specific issue. Any help is highly appreciated

If I perform same search on amazon.com, the only version I can find is having the code fqc-05956 and is labeled System Builder. There's not much information about licensing of Windows 8 that I could find. According to this article when using System Builder it can be transferred from one computer to another. What are the differences in licensing between those 2? Is fqc-05955 transferable from one hardware to another like System Builder is? Can I install fqc-05955 on a computer I already own that has no prior windows licensing? I am asking this, since many stores that sell fqc-05955 say it can only be bough with a computer.   I am looking into purchasing a dual-monitor setup, and need to purchase two monitors with VESA MIS-D mounts. My only problem is that that information doesn't seem to be readily available on most shopping websites. Neither Amazon nor Newegg seem to have the information searchable or filterable. I could shop for monitors, then Google around to see if they support VESA MIS-D, but is there a better way? Is there a resource (not necessarily a store - once I find a monitor I can shop elsewhere) where I can browse a variety of monitor specs and reviews while only looking at monitors with a certain VESA mount?

They have an interesting story in which they provide primary SAN/iSCSI storage to VMWare and Exchange and at the same time do snaphots to the Cloud. • What is a good and safe way of sharing certificates?

  I have a few certificates, that are used as authentication, to ssh into my servers on the Amazon cloud. I rotate those certificates weekly, manually. My question is, I need to share the certificates with some colleagues, a few on the LAN, and a few in another part of the country. What is the best practice to share the certificate? • "Couldn't resolve host" for any external content

  On our site we run a few different scripts for various sites (uploading to amazon s3, data from chartbeat, script to count twitter followers) and all of them just stop working from time to time. They work most days, but then some days (like today) they all just stop working. This simple script to get follower count into PHP $url = "http://twitter.com/users/show/username"; $response = file_get_contents ( $url ); $t_profile = new SimpleXMLElement ( $response ); $count = $t_profile->followers_count; Just sits there for a couple minutes, then finally spits out an error that says "Couldn't resolve host". Any script we use for an external site gives us this error. I'm not really sure where to check what's blocking these connections all of a sudden, and why it seems to work most times, then doesn't for a day or so, then works again. Any tips? • IE8 Windows 7 (64bit) security certificate problem

  Hi, We have just received some new computers for use in the office (Dell Vostro). They seem to work fine in the main. When we use IE8 to go to some web pages such as yahoo mail it tells us: “There is a problem with this websites security certificate” If we have a look at the details it says: “This certificate cannot be verified up to a trusted certification authority” This however works correctly in Firefox. I don't understand why I should get such an error message, should this not just work? I don't think its anything to do with the certificate itself as this is happening on www.yahoo.co.uk and other commercial (amazon I think?) sites. I think there is something off with the PCs setup. The PC has Windows 7 (64 bit) and Norton Internet Security installed. Any ideas as to why this is happening? Thanks

• Looking for FTP server that allows user management from database

  I'm planning a server application that will handle files uploaded via FTP. The application must parse text documents that it receives and write them to a database (most likely a document-oriented database like Mongo). And the application must also relay all large binary files it receives to Amazon S3 for storage and hosting. I'd like to manage all aspects of the FTP server programmatically. For example, when a user registers via a web page the application should be able to create the user account in the database and provision a directory on the server for receiving files. I'm using a Linux server but am otherwise open to considering any programming language or framework. I experimented with VSFTPD but didn't like the way the application relies on config files and the creation of users and directories via the command line. Can someone please recommend what server framework I should consider? I'm a little biased toward solutions that leverage Javascript/Nodejs or Python. However, I'm open to anything that can run on a Linux box.

• Digital audio input on Macbook?

  I have: a Macbook (not Pro), don't know the exact model but it's a Core 2 Duo 2.0GHz and probably what Wikipedia calls the "Late 2006" or "Mid 2007" model a DVD player, region-free, that has "Coax and TosLink optical digital audio outputs" I want to make an MP3 of the audio track of some DVDs (for learning a new language), and I can't use the Macbook's built-in DVD drive because it's a different region (ugh!). I'm sure I can connect the DVD player to the Macbook with an analog audio cable. However, if it's possible I'd prefer to keep the signal digital. I'm not even positive if my old Macbook has digital audio in, and if so what I need to connect to it. (I've done plenty of home audio geeking, but always in analog!) Will a "Toslink cable" plus a "Toslink Female to Mini-Plug Male Adapter" (found on Amazon) let me connect my things together? It looks like the pieces will fit but I'd like to hear someone confidently knowledgeable on the matter before I buy something. Thanks!
