• Mixing RAM brands

  Hey guys, I'm scheduled to install a server at a colo facility tomorrow, but I've hit a snag. ESXi doesn't like the fact that I have 12GB ram in my server (8gb on one side of CPU, 4gb on the other). I currently have 3xCrucial 4gb ECC DDR3 1333mhz sticks (http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B001TGT7EE/ref=oss_product) and I'm planning on stopping by Fry's on the way to the colo facility so I can pick up another stick so that ESXi will install. Problem is, Fry's doesn't stock Crucial RAM. They do have a stick that I think is identical to my crucial one: http://www.frys.com/product/5915524?site=sr:SEARCH:MAIN_RSLT_PG Will this be dangerous to use in my server? The specs on the RAM are the same as far as I know (ecc registered, 1333mhz, ddr3, 4gb).

• MySQL Daemon failed to start

  THE SETUP I'm running Linux CentOS on an Amazon EC2 instance. The MySQL data files are on an EBS Drive mounted at /data/ ( symlink - /var/lib/mysql /data/mysql ). Everything works fine in this setup. THE PROBLEM I'm trying to move everything from this EBS drive to a new drive. I umounted the /data/ drive, and mounted it at /data2/. Then I mounted the new drive at /data/ and copied everything over to it from /data2/. Everything on the system works great, except MySQL. Every time I try to start the MySQL daemon ( /etc/init.d/mysqld start ) I get a MySQL Daemon failed to start error.

• When using TCP load balancing with HAProxy, does all outbound traffic flow through the LB?

  I am setting up an app to be hosted using VMs(probably amazon, but that is not set in stone) which will require both HTTP load balancing and load balancing a large number(50k or so if possible) of persistant TCP connections. The amount of data is not all that high, but updates are frequent. Right now I am evaluating load balancers and am a bit confused about the architecture of HAProxy. If I use HAProxy to balance the TCP connections, will all the resulting traffic have to flow through the load balancer? If so, would another solution(such as LVS or even nginx_tcp_proxy_module) be a better fit?

And it is supposed to hold around 100 000 users the first year, also the system must be able to handle 1000 users working at the same time. • Is Family Tree Maker 2011 the right upgrade?

  My father has used Family Tree Maker for years, but hasn't upgraded since version 11. It is difficult to tell from reviews at Amazon and other places whether upgrading to FTM 2011 is a good choice. File incompatibilities and upgrade woes sound like customer service is lacking, and i've read reports of it uploading your data to their database but then trying to sell you a download of data. Looking at the ancestry.com site makes me think it's solely about selling add-ons and upgrades. On the other hand, the feature set seems fairly rich and the software has a pretty strong following. I was able to get Gramps working on my system, but that's not going to work for my dad. Any advice on a good upgrade path? Doesn't necessarily have to be FTM. The only requirement is a way to import his existing data.

• Can I connect an external antenna to a range extender?

  I live in a kind of dormitory and the next access point is 60 meters away from my room. So I bought a range extender (TP-Link WA730RE) and installed it into my room in the same height as the access point. But my problem is still not solved. The reception is slightly better but my connection still gets broken every two minutes. The antenna that comes with this range extender was 4dB. My question is, can I buy an 8dB external antenna (like this one: http://www.amazon.com/TP-Link-TL-ANT2408C-Desktop-Omni-Directional-Antenna/dp/B0034CQSKW/ref=sr_1_14?ie=UTF8&qid=1332074993&sr=8-14) and replace it with the antenna that comes with the range extender? Or is this external antenna only suitable for the "receiver" end of the connection, i.e. the computer?

• What is the lease irriating printer manufacturer?

  Currently I have a Lexmark all in one printer/scanner which has some of the worse drivers I've seen for a printer. The installation takes forever. Then once it's installed the printer will only work if I keep the "Lexmark Productivity Studio" running in my system tray. Then later after I've scanned something 99% of the time the "Save to PDF" button doesn't do anything when I click it. It is also a wireless printer, but of course the only way to set any of the wireless settings is during the driver setup. So if my WEP key changes then I have to go off and reinstall the entire printer driver. Lately I tried refilling one of the ink cartridges with a key I bought off amazon, and now both the printer and the drivers keep complaining about being out of "Official Lexmark Ink" This comic from The Oatmeal pretty much sums up my feelings about consumer printers and their drivers. This question is, of course, pretty subjective but I'd like to know what (if any) consumer printer brands actual provide quality drivers and software with their printers.

  So I have an Amazon EC2 box running Windows Server 2008 with Active Directory installed on it. I also have a Windows 7 virtual machine, which is set to use the Active Directory box as its DNS and WINS server. I'm trying to join the virtual machine to the domain, and I'm asked for authentication. I give authentication, wait a minute, and I get an error saying: The following error occurred attempting to join the domain "ad.chigs.me": The network path was not found. How can I fix this so that I'll be able to join the domain?

• Need to hookup HP dv7-3085dx with Nvidia GeForce GT 230M to my Dell 30 inch LCD 3007WFP at max resol

  I recently bought an HP laptop (dv7-3085dx) (http://reviews.cnet.com/laptops/hp-pavilion-dv7-3085dx/4505-3121_7-33776108.html) which is supposed to have a pretty good video card (NVIDIA GeForce GT 230M). The card is supposed to output a max resolution of 2560x1600 which is also the max resolution of my monitor (http://www.ubergizmo.com/15/archives/2006/02/dell_3007wfp_on_dell_2001fp_action_8_megapixel_desktop.html). Now I bought an HDMI to dual link dvi (http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B002KKLYDK/ref=oss_product) cable...this is after Best Buy's 70 dollar hdmi to dvi (perhaps it was 'single' link?) didn't give me the best resolution. In windows 7, when I try to set the max resolution for my 30 in monitor, I only get 1280x800...which is absurd. The monitor is great, I love the laptop and the video card supposedly supports such resolutions. So I can't figure out why I'm not getting better resolution (by the way, when i "detect" my monitor in windows 7, it is shown correctly as DELL 3007WFP!).

And then pack/convert it to ISO image so that to use it on cloud hostings like Amazon. The problem is that i have only ssh root access. Hosting support can't do that for me. Another part of the question - is it possible to enlarge the Linux-filesystem by not re-installing it and using the free space of home directory? Is it possible to do? I guess it is possible with rsync or something like that. Will my Mysql databes copy together with all other data? Thanks in advance!

• Configuring vsftpd with nginx on ubuntu

  I have vsftpd installed on Ubuntu 12.04LTS along with nginx, php, and sql on an Amazon ec2 instance. The web server is good to go, but I'm having trouble connecting to the FTP server. I'm not quite sure how to set the privileges or what configuration options I might be missing. By default, the location of the web root is at /usr/share/nginx/www and it is owned by root:root. The web server runs as user www-data in the group www-data. I've opened port 21 and set the passive ports in the ec2 backend and ufw firewall. In vsftpd.conf, I have: ... anonymous_enable=NO local_enable=YES local_umask=0027 chroot_local_user=YES pasv_enable=YES pas_max_port=12100 pasv_min_port=12000 port_enable=YES ... Now, I'm unsure how to create the FTP user that when I login, displays my web directory with write access. I've tried it a few different ways, but I keep running into errors (either no connection, no write access, or very slow timeouts.)

• how can I git-revise configs in my /etc/ dir? (sudo has different keys..)

  I'd like to keep some of the folders in my /etc/ dir git-revised, cause I'm quite new to server administration and am constantly messing around in my /etc/nginx/ and /etc/bind/ directories. I've heard of people git-revising their either /etc/ directories, but that seems a bit like overkill, as at this point I'm only messing in those 2 subdirectories. The problem I'm having is that if I sudo my git operations, I don't have the right pubkeys to push to my remote repo (bitbucket). But if I don't sudo, I need to mess around with all the permissions (again, not very pro at this). Does anyone know best practices for managing their configs? or how I should solve this problem?   I'm looking for a way to manage my academic workflow for reading e-books in .epub or .mobi formats on OSX. My requirements: - continuous scrolling mode - ability to highlight text (e.g. in yellow, using a single keyboard shortcut) - ideally, the ability to make annotations as well Amazon Kindle reader for OSX offers annotating, but not continuous scrolling mode. Calibre offers continuous scrolling mode, but does not allow highlighting or annotating. Is there a solution that will allow me to do this? I'm also open to workarounds, e.g. using Calibre to convert to HTML, then reading the book in a browser---but I would still need the ability to highlight using a single keystroke.

  I'm trying to run a custom SIP software (which uses JAIN SIP 1.2) on a cloud box. What I'd really like is to have a real public IP aka which is listed by "ifconfig -a" command. This is because atm I don't want to write additional SIP code / add a SIP proxy in order to manage private IP addresses / address translation. I gave Amazon EC2 a go, but as reported here http://stackoverflow.com/questions/10013549/sip-and-ec2-elastic-ips it's not fit for purpose (they do a 1:1 NAT translation between the private IP of the box and its Elastic IP). Does anyone know of a cloud service that provides real static public IP addresses?

• Plug and Go NAS Storage

  My wife and I are separating. One of the things we need to extricate is the media we have accumulated over the years. So I am looking for a NAS solution that is a) relatively low-cost, b) reliable and c) easy for a non-geek to use (I don't want to be tech support). All it needs to do is hold our iTunes library, photos, course work and maybe some movies and TV shows that I currently have. She will be connecting via her Netbook. I have seen this thread but the reviews on Amazon aren't particularly favourable. Due to the need for simplicity, WHS and FreeNAS are none-starters. I need redundancy as if a single drive system was to die then she would lose her course work and photos. Is the ReadyNAS the only real solution out there?

The server runs fine for a few minutes and after a while (several thousands of hits in this case) FastCGI Dies and Nginx returns 502 Error. • No sound through DisplayPort

  I'm trying to connect my Elitebook 8440p laptop to my Samsung HDTV. The laptop does not have a HDMI connection, but it does have DisplayPort. I bought a DisplayPort-to-HDMI adapter here http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B002CSRFD8/ref=oss_product, and connected it with a 3' HDMI cable. The video shows up fine, but there is no audio. DisplayPort, HDMI, and the adapter all support audio. I contacted HP tech support, who told me to update my sound drivers. I installed the driver and rebooted. Supposedly, I should see a "HD Audio" tab. No luck, even after installing the driver again and rebooting. HP closed the case. I'm using XP Pro.

• Should I split my website into different servers

  I have a website where a user uploads photos, the photos gets resized and thumbnailed, and stored on the server. At the same time, there are some INSERTS into a MySQL table regarding the photo uploaded (like description, user id etc). The site currently runs off a managed VPS, and I love the support it provides. However it is expensive to store the many small photos and the resizing and thumbnailing processes do cause spikes on the app performance. (Amazon S3 is pretty expensive, especially considering the costs for uploading many small files) Question: Will it be a good idea to move the image processing operations and image storage to another server which is an unmanaged dedicated server with a much lower cost/gb and keep the current VPS for its 24/7 support and hosting the webapp? Or should I move the entire site to the dedicated server?   I am trying to connect my ASUS VH242H (1920x1020), with my Macbook Pro. The laptop has a 320m nvidia and it should be more than enough to support an external display.   How can I the remove DRM from books I have purchased for my Kindle? A solution that works on Mac OS X and/or Linux would be ideal, but a Windows-only solution is also acceptable. Moral aside: I do not plan to share or pirate books; I am very happy with the Amazon Kindle store and have purchased more books from there since getting my Kindle a month ago than I had in the previous two years. However, I do not feel comfortable keeping them in an encrypted format that only a single company's software will allow me to access. I may also want to convert them into a format for other readers in the future, which is not possible without first removing the DRM.

• Unable to ping remote server Nagios

  We've recently set up Nagios on one of our Amazon EC2 instances to act as a monitoring server to our other instances. nrpe was installed on our staging server stager and appears to be working fine: monitoring_server~: /usr/lib/nagios/plugins/check_nrpe -H xx.xx.xx.xx -p 5666 NRPE v2.12 The issue is - when viewing the remote server stager within the Nagios admin screen - it appears to be 'DOWN'. • EC2 Apache Server not reflecting changes to PHP files

  We're running a Laravel application on an Amazon EC2 server with Apache installed. I've noticed on multiple occasions, that the server doesn't respond to changes in PHP files, even after restarting Apache. For example, if I edit a file that I'm accessing through a URL, and I break the syntax, I don't even get a PHP exception thrown. This is really strange, and has been sticking its head out more frequently these days. Is it possible Apache is caching the PHP files somewhere? Opcode caching perhaps?

• Fast, reliable data transfers from/to China

  We are a small company and we will need to transfer rather large amounts of data (10GB+ each time) between Europe and China in the near future. As many may have experienced, Internet connections to or from China can be rather unreliable and slow at times without any apparent reason. For example, while sending data to China via FTP generally works well, it can be painfully slow in the other direction. Currently, we are investigating new ways to have high transfer rates in both directions. So far we have tried: FTP (see above) FTP over VPN services (generally slower than direct connections) F2F (like Retroshare or Freenet - slow!!) Aspera (fast but expensive!) BitTorrent (unreachable end nodes, b/c of firewalls which we must not configure) We would like to try: Cloud storage (e.g. Amazon S3, Google Storage) - are those services always and reliably reachable from inside China? Point-to-Point VPN (currently not possible, b/c of the network, see above) I'd be especially grateful to hear from people who have already dealt with this kind of problem before.

  I explain my case: I'm at Amazon AWS and I want to be fault tolerant on a entire region failure. My basic problem is to have the db in sync with 2 regions. My options: Master-Master (high lag) Hand made sync every 5 minutes Master-ColdMaster?! (copy on the fly but Master won't wait the other region commit) In my system we could afford loosing a piece of data (we're not a bank) the last inserts in the db, but we could not afford more than 10 minutes of downtime. The database is small and the level of inserts is low, and I wouldn't affect the normal usage waiting other region commit. Is the 3 solution posible? And the most important, once the primary fail how we can detect and change the rol between master-coldmaster -- coldmaster-master ? Is there any clean-mode to restore between failure? Thank's!
