  • H/w suggestions for 24 port PoE switch.

    Hi, I am looking for a 24 port PoE(IEEE 802.3af) switch to power some Snom phones that I have. Please suggest some appliances. I just need basic L2 functions and wouldn't want to go for a expensive Cisco switch. Here are my requirements: 1) IEEE 802.3af PoE 2) 802.1q VLAN 3) Full-Duplex I'd like a CLI also if possible, I've looked at Vyatta, but buying their 24 port appliance is way more expensive than a d-link or a netgear one. This is my current layout: public.ip > Cisco firewall > lan.ip > OpenVPN server lan.ip = 192.168.22.70 The Cisco firewall forwards the requests to the oVPN server, thus so far everything works and clients are able to connect. However, all clients connected should be able to access 3 networks: lan1: 192.168.200.0 (vpn lan) > tun0 lan2: 192.168.110.0 (office lan) > eth1 (gw 192.168.22.1) lan3: 192.168.22.0 (server lan) > eth1 (broadcast network) So tun0 is mapped to eth1. As i can't check the computers every time a meeting ends, i'd like to find a tool, preferably running on windows, that can monitor some cisco switch ports state, and every time a cable is being unplugged, send me an email. I know that some monitoring solutions can do that already, but i wonder if something simplier (and preferably cheap / free of course !) exists.

In doing googling and reasearch and talking to friends I ended up with router - cisco rv016 wifi access point - airnet 1142 lightweight access point. (lap1142n) In trying to set all this up and reading I think I bought the wrong access point. It seems I need a wireless controller? Can someone confirm that I should not have bought the lightweight one?

    We have a local network (A) of about 50 computers connected via gigabit ethernet. We get a connection to the internet using two broadband connections to a backbone and distribute the bandwidth across the 50 computers using a CISCO 1811 router, but the bandwidth is not enough for everybody. There is a campus wide wireless network(B) that has very high bandwidth, is there a device or way to setup multiple individual connections to network B and supply the bandwidth to our network A?

    I have grow to prefer x86 based router OS's like Vyatta and pfSense over their competitors Cisco and Juniper (Well, I never really used Juniper, but still.). However, they feel "fake" to me, like "Frankenstein" routers. I think my greatest worry is that I am missing out on something by not using the main contenders. Are there any benchmarks out there that compare the main metrics (throuput, etc.) of x86 router operating systems to their proprietary counterparts?

    My cable TV company gives me a Cisco Explorer 8640HDC DVR box that can record shows from TV. I know that it contains a hard drive to save the shows on. What format and file system are used to store the videos on the hard drive? I have looked at the documentation for this DVR box and there is no technical information about the manner in which recordings are stored. Is it possible to connect the hard drive to a computer and extract the recordings from it?

  • Custom Live CD using UCK

    I am trying to create a custom live iso that I can place onto thumb drives for the purpose of using putty to program Cisco switches and routers. I have ubuntu 14.04 LTS installed on a laptop and also installed UCK. I used the desktop image for 14.04 and created a custom ISO. I was able to run terminal and install the putty application and add a new user. I added the new user to the dialout group so they could then access the serial port. I am not exactly where I want to be yet, but it is a start. I have loaded the ISO to a USB drive using netbootin, but it will not boot into the live cd for me to test that everything works the way I need in the image. Is this because of the image I used? Any help would be great. Thank you.

    I have completed my diploma in (IT) and now pursuing degree, i am in last semester of my B.E(I.T). I want to do specialization either in Database(oracle) or in Networking(cisco). Which one of two will be in more demand in near future, i know it's all about interest but still i would like to know your opinion. Most of people say that a network engineer is never paid as better as a programmer or a DBA, and few says they do get paid well.   • MacGyver Moments

    Denny Cherry tagged me to write about my best MacGyver Moment.  Usually I ignore blogosphere fluff and just use this space to write what I think is important.  However, #MVP10 just ended and I have a stronger sense of community.  Besides, where else would I mention my second best Macgyver moment was making a BIOS jumper out of a soda can.  Aluminum is conductive and I didn't have any real jumpers lying around. My best moment is probably my entire home computer network.  Every system but one is hand-built, usually cobbled together out of spare parts and 'adapted' from its original purpose. My Primary Domain Controller is a Dell 2300.   The Service Tag indicates it was shipped to the original owner in 1999.  Box has a PERC/1 RAID controller.  I acquired this from a previous employer for $50.  It runs Windows Server 2003 Enterprise Edition.  Does DNS, DHCP, and RADIUS services as a bonus.  RADIUS authentication is used for VPN and Wireless access.  It is nice to sign in once and be done with it. The Secondary Domain Controller is an old desktop.  Dual P-III 933 with some extra drives. My VPN box is a P-II 250 with 384MB of RAM and a 21 GB hard drive.  I did a P-to-V to my Hyper-V box a year or so ago and retired the hardware again.  Dynamic DNS lets me connect no matter how often Comcast shuffles my IP. The Hyper-V box is a desktop system with 8GB RAM and an AMD Athlon 5000+ processor.  Cost me less than $500 to put together nearly two years ago.  I reasoned that if Vista and Windows 2008 were the same code then Vista 64-bit certified meant the drivers for Vista would load into Windows 2008.  Turns out I was right. Later I added three 1TB drives but wasn't too happy with how that turned out.  I recovered two of the drives yesterday and am building an iSCSI storage unit. (Much thanks to Starwind.  Great product).  I am using an old AMD 1.1GhZ box with 1.5 GB RAM (cobbled together from three old PCs) as my storave server.  The Hyper-V box is slated for an OS rebuild to 2008 R2 once I get the storage system worked out.  maybe in a week or two. A couple of DLink Gigabit switches ties everything together. Add in the Vonage box, the three PCs, the Wireless-N Access Point, the two notebooks and the XBox and you have gone from MacGyver to darn near Rube Goldberg. The only thing I really spend money on is power supplies and fans.  I buy top-of-the-line for both. I even pull and crimp my own cables. Oh, and if my kids hose up a PC, I have all of their data on a server elsewhere.  Every PC and laptop is pretty much interchangable for email and basic workstation tasks.  That helps a lot too. Of course I will tag SQLVariant.
