  Lot of things has been discussed that can be taken as negative things about programmers work. Lets discuss about something good and unexpected things that happen to programmers. Example: (After R&D of two days and a lot of disappointments) You just spend an hour with your PM to explain that some feature due to some problem you are unable to release this module in today's beta... after a lot of arguments you are given an hour to make your app work without this module. You sit on your workstation to make a release and all of a sudden you find what turns out to be a silly little problem.... (you solve it and prepare a desired build) did you face miracle (= sudden, positive surprises?) in your life?? what was your reaction in case you have come through such experience?? (N.B. I know my English is not that good and that's why I'm open to every linguistic mistakes needed to be corrected)

• Returning status code where one of many errors could have occured

  I'm developing a PHP login component which includes functions to manipulate the User object, such as $User->changePassword(string $old, string $new) What I need some advice with is how to return a status, as the function can either succeed (no further information needs to be given) or fail (and the calling code needs to know why, for example incorrect password, database problem etc.) I've come up with the following ideas: Unix-style: return 0 on success, another code on failure. This doesn't seem particularly common in PHP and the language's type-coercion messes with this (a function returning FALSE on success?) This seems to be the best I can think of. Throw an exception on error. PHP's exception support is limited, and this will make life harder for anybody trying to use the functions. Return an array, containing a boolean for "success" or not, and a string or an int for "failure status" if applicable. None of these seem particularly appealing, does anyone have any advice or better ideas?

  I'm a consultant and I am going to introduce unit tests to all developers at my client site. My goal is to ensure that all new applications should have unit tests for all classes created. The client has a problem with high maintenance costs from fixing bugs in their existing applications. Their applications have a life span from between 5-15 years in which they continuously add new features. I'm quite confident that they will benefit greatly from starting with unit tests. I'm interested in the effect of unit tests on the time and cost of development: How much time will writing unit tests as part of the development process add? How much time will be saved in maintenance activities (testing and debugging) by having good unit tests?

• Excel duration converts to date

  I'm working on an Excel 2010 spreadsheet and I'm trying to put in durations for some tasks I want to schedule.The interesting thing is that up until a few minutes ago, I couldn't do it.I was entering in "47:00" and excel was (and still is) converting it to "1/1/1900 23:00:00"In my mind, I want the value to be 47 minutes, but for the life of me I cannot find a fix for this behavior.Here's the weirdest thing, I haven't had this problem in the past.  Usually I put in times, add them up and they work like magic.  Put in 18 entries of 20 minutes each, total them and excel will usually tell me that it's a total of 6 hours.No problem.Today, problem.Here's the weird bit:As I was writing this post, I got it to work.By formatting the column as custom "[hh]:mm" and summing the columns, I can get total times.But the times are still being formatted into dates if I look at the underlying data.  Bottom line, if you need to calculate durations, you can, but don't look too closely at what is happening underneath the covers.

  In command line I wrote: michael@ubuntu:~$ firefox Firefox launched. Command prompt ($) disappeared. Then I pressed ^+z. The result was: [1]+ Stopped firefox Well, Firefox really stopped. It did not react anyhow. So, I could not close it by pressing the cross of the window. By the way, the menu items 'Tools', and 'Help' somehow showed some signs of life. They showed drop-down lists, but nothing more (no reaction to inner menu items). Well, I could not end Firefox through System Monitor. Could you comment on this case: what happened after pressing ^+z?

The problem is that all the team members including me are junior developers and for all of us this is the first time we are working in a team. The problem is that we do not know how to start the project. We know a little about scrum and agile development, we have our user stories in place and our created project - which does not have even one piece of code - and now we are stuck and don't know how and what to do? All scrum books talk about scrum development but lack of the details like how to start. How my team will know what object I am using? How we will push the first piece of code and what it will be? Any help will be great. Books, articles, advice, or anything.

• How to deal with OOP design problems in interviews?

  This is a question where I seek guidance from fellow/senior developers to get into my dream company - it's a pioneer in OOP and Agile. I've already failed once to clear an interview. One part I feel most challenging is to come up with a proper Object Oriented design(classes, interfaces, methods, interactions etc.) in a very short time for certain situations like Pacman, Game Of Life and so on. As the problems are unprecedented ones - my approach is mostly to try different things and then make decisions - which they feel is not clear and not what they expect from a developer with 5+ years of experience. I've already studied a few books on patterns, OOP - it didn't help me much and I think it'll take a bit more than that. Could some one please guide on what specifically shall I practice so that I can do better at design problems as above. I want to refine my approach and have a better thought process.

  Im writing an Agile course for some of the new guys we are on-boarding recently and I want to add a cautionary tale so they understand that Agile is not meant for all projects. My problem is that because of the nature of the projects I work in Agile has worked pretty well so far so I can't honestly point out what can go wrong and why when you use it in the wrong kind of project. Does anyone have a good real life example of a project where an Agile approach (e.g. Scurm) simply didn't worked out?

• How do I remove Skype 4.3 from Ubuntu 14.04 LTS (32-bit)

  I installed Skype on my nephew's new Ubuntu 14.04 LTS machine, and now we've decided to remove it. But I'm not able to locate it in my Installed programs section of Ubuntu Software Center. I'm able to call it up by opening the debian package, Software Center opens it up, but where I would normally see the "Remove" button, I have a "Reinstall" button. For the life of me, I can't figure out how to uninstall Skype. Any suggestions? In case you're wondering I used the version of Skype designed for 12.xx, as there was no option available for Ubuntu 14.xx.

• Cannot get laptop wifi to work in ubuntu 12.4

  Hi i have a Toshiba Satellite L645D-S4106 laptop and i recently installed ubuntu 12.4 on it and i cannot get the wifi to connect for the life of me. When i tried ubuntu out before installing it, the wifi worked while windows was still installed on it. Then i installed ubuntu and now there is no wifi. I can't even flip the wifi network switch to the on position. I installed the driver from realtek for the linux driver and still nothing. Doing rfkill list all shows soft blocked: no and hard blocked: yes. Can anyone help me :p haha very frusterating. It probably is something very dumb. Thanks

• Found a better solution to a problem at work - should I deter from posting the code snippet online?

  I think most of us, programmers, used Stack Overflow to solve every day problems: looked for an efficient algorithm to do something. Now imagine a situation: you have a problem to solve. Googled a bit, found a StackOverflow question but you are not really satisfied with the answers so far. So you have to do your own research: you need to do it because you want it in the company's app. Eventually after some hours you have found the better solution. You're happy, you added it to the company's code base, then you want to submit your answer with a code snippet (just several lines) to the question you've found before to help others too. But wait: the company's software is closed source, and you worked on it on the clock. So does this mean I shouldn't post the answer neither at work nor at home to that question in the rest of my life, because I solved it at work, and the company owns that piece of code?

  I recently attended a conference and met some insanely talented developers with mile-long lists of accomplishments. One puzzling thing I noticed about many of these wildly successful people is that a lot of their output (books, blogs, games, mobile apps) are done as hobby projects outside of their normal jobs. Not only this, but most of them were married, and some even with children. I'm absolutely baffled by this. My question is targeted to folks that are married, working full time, and also spend time outside of work on hobby projects or extra programming. The question is: How many hours do you put in programming outside of your normal job, and how do you balance it with your family life?

• Kworker consuming %100 CPU

  I have a process, named kworker which is continuously consuming 100% of the CPU's computing capacity. I have tried several possible solutions over a period of 3 months, but to no avail. I even got to upgrade to u + 1 (Ubuntu 12.10 Quantal Quetzal), but my effort was, again, fruitless. I desperately need some help, because, as is, this process is draining my computer's battery so fast, that makes linux usage a disappointing experience. It is noteworthy, that I do not have any such issues when I use windows, which results in twice as much battery life.

• unexplainable packet drops with 5 ethernet NICs and low traffic on Ubuntu

  I'm stuck on problem where my machine started to drops packets with no sign of ANY system load or high interrupt usage after an upgrade to Ubuntu 12.04. My server is a network monitoring sensor, running Ubuntu LTS 12.04, it passively collects packets from 5 interfaces doing network intrusion type stuff. Before the upgrade I managed to collect 200+GB of packets a day while writing them to disk with around 0% packet loss depending on the day with the help of CPU affinity and NIC IRQ to CPU bindings. Now I lose a great deal of packets with none of my applications running and at very low PPS rate which a modern workstation NIC would have no trouble with. Specs: x64 Xeon 4 cores 3.2 Ghz 16 GB RAM NICs: 5 Intel Pro NICs using the e1000 driver (NAPI). [1] eth0 and eth1 are integrated NICs (in the motherboard) There are 2 other PCI-X network cards, each with 2 Ethernet ports. 3 of the interfaces are running at Gigabit Ethernet, the others are not because they're attached to hubs. This is what my interrupt stats looked like before the upgrade, after, with ACPI on PCI it showed multiple NICs bound to an interrupt and shared with other devices such as USB drives which I didn't like so I think i'm going to keep it with ACPI off as it's easier to designate sole purpose interrupts. I can't figure out why my PCI-X slots are negotiated as PCI. The network cards are all PCI-X with the exception of the integrated NICs that came with the server. In the output below it looks as if eth3 and eth2 negotiated at PCI-X speeds rather than PCI:66Mhz. Wouldn't they all drop to PCI:66Mhz? If your integrated NICs are PCI, as labeled below (eth0,eth1), then wouldn't all devices on your bus speed drop down to that slower bus speed? If not, I still don't know why only one of my NICs ( each has two ethernet ports) is labeled as PCI-X in the output below. • DirectX works for 64-bit but not 32-bit

  I'm trying to play a game (Civilization 5) which was previously working but no longer. I believe I've narrowed it down to a DirectX issue because I get an error running dxdiag.exe in 32 bit mode. My goal (at least I believe) is to get Direct3D Acceleration "Enabled" in dxdiag (as it is in 64 bit dxdiag). Like other users in that thread, HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Wow6432Node\Microsoft\Direct3D\Drivers does not have a SoftwareOnly key to change. I even tried manually adding it as a string and dword, to no avail. I have a NVIDIA GeForce GT 525M, and before you ask, yes I've tried updating (also uninstalling, reinstalling) my drivers. I've also tried doing the same with DirectX (and Civilization 5 for that matter). Been debugging for some 4+ hours now after a full day of work and I've run out of ideas. For the life of me I cannot figure out what combination of expression editing or format editing I need to use. For the detail portion I can use: =DATEADD("s", SUM(Fields!Talk_Time.Value), CDate("00:00")) And it will return: 1/1/0001 12:00:14 AM Now I can use =LEFT(DATEADD("s", SUM(Fields!Talk_Time.Value), CDate("00:00")),8) Which will return: 12:00:14 But really what I need is: 00:00:14 Please help!
