• 2D Platform Game Jumping

  I'm currently writing a game in XNA for fun which uses C#. I have got my sprites loaded and when the character moves right he looks like he is running right and when he moves left he looks like he is running left. I been looking everywhere for a good coding example for how to create a jumping ability. I have read all the physics stuff that I can stand and it doesn't help when I can't figure out how to use say space bar to jump yet can't keep them from using space just jump again until they land.

• How to add a subclass to a viewcontroller in storyboard

  Here's what I've created I created a view controller element (in storyboard) I created a new viewcontroller .h and .m file Here's my issue Can't seem to figure out how to get the content that I've added to the .m file to show up on the view controller element in the storyboard once the app is launched and the selection for that view controller element is made in the iPhone simulator. Although I am able to see content that is already added to a .m file on the home screen and activity screen when the selection is made in the iPhone simulator. Hope that makes sense, if not please ask and I'll be more than happy to provide more info.

• How do i set CTRL not to show where the pointer is?

  After recently re-installing, i went through every System Setting and choose exactly how i wanted everthing to be. Except one thing. I'd never seen the Show Cursor on CTRL value before, and wanted to know what it was like. After a while it was simply annoying, whenever i paste of cut in chrome it takes the focus off of the text before i can press V. I have been through eveything in System Settings and can't find it again to disable it. How do i set CTRL not to pulse around the cursor? I will be happy with directions in System Settings, Ubuntu Tweak, or GConf.

  So now it's 2011, and as I carry on coding on our active projects it's time to update some copyright notices. eg. Copyright Widgets Ltd 2010 to Copyright Widgets Ltd 2010, 2011 My question is when do you update the copyright notices? Do you change the notice in the head of a file the first time you work on that file? Since a module is one piece of code consisting of many files that work together, do you update all notices in that module when you change a single file in that module? Since a program is one piece of code (maybe consisting of many modules), do you update all notices in that program when you change a single file in that program? Or do you just go through and change en-mass over your morning coffee on the grounds your about to start programming and updateing things?

• What sort of leaderboard for my game?

  I recently published a word game for Windows Phone and I am really happy to have some players. The game is entirely offline and at the end of a game, the player's score is published to a server. I'm collecting the scores to build a leaderboard. Right now, I don't believe that the leaderboard I offer to my users is appropriate. I essentially accumulate the score of all the games of a user for a given day and that becomes their score. So if Player 1 plays 3 games and gets 100, 150 and 200 points, its score for the day is 450 points. I would like to get your ideas and opinion. How do I keep my game challenging and engaging with a good leaderboard? Should I continue accumulating the score for a day? Should I just keep the best score? Thanks!

• Why do people use programming books?

  I find that when someone asks what is the best way to learn how to program, people usually provide them with references to a bunch texts written by various authors. However I don't believe many people at all learn to program from books? I find that they are usually faced with a challenge and then use programming as tool to overcome it. For example I 'got into' programming because I wanted to start a server for a game I was playing, so I googled and read through the support for that particular server and now I am a employed software engineer, using only the skills I developed (and then further developed) by coding C# scripts for a not very popular server package. So my question is, do people generally find it easier to learn from these books? I know I have looked at a few of them and found them far too 'dry' to encourage me to finish it.

  Disclaimer: I'm not a programmer, but I do like coding from time to time. This is strictly for fun, nothing else. I'm an economist :) I learned Delphi in the past (7 years ago, forgot 99% of it), BASIC (10 years ago). I now know a bit of PHP. So I want to learn a programming language just so I can kill some time, but it'd be awesome if it would be useful as well. I've narrowed down choices to the following: Python (heard it was easy yet useful, Google's appengine runs on python) Java (awesome because cross-platform and very popular, also I'm an Android fan so I might even develop some apps) Continue learning PHP? • Boat passing under a bridge in a 2D tile based RTS

  I'm writing a 2D tile based RTS. And I want to add a 'pseudo 3D' feature to it - bridges over the rivers. I havent't start any coding yet, just trying to think how it fits the collision detection model. A boat passing under the bridge and a unit moving over the bridge will eventually occupy the same cell on the map. How to prement them from colliding? Is there a common approach to solve such a problem? Or I need to implement a 3D world to do this?

• Getting Started on Isometric Board Game port

  I have developed a (off-line) board game that I would like to translate to an online/social game in an isometric grid perspective. My background is in .NET web development, so I'm very comfortable with C#, HTML, jQuery/javascript. Still getting my feet wet with HTML5. I have familiarity with Flash, but I haven't worked with it in years. I'm also interested in working with Azure for hosting the back-end. Ultimately I'd like this game to have persistent leaderboard/achievements and therefore be able to log in through FB and Kong and the like. Obviously, I'm not looking for 'here's exactly how to do all of this'. But I would love some opinions on where to start, particularly given my background and goals.   Whats the best way to get started on iPhone development if you are an expeienced C++ or C# programmer? Most books either assume you know nothing or something. What are the steps to achieve this? For eg: first learn objective C (let's say), next learn cocoa... I am interested in books/resources. I read Getting started with iPhone development from Oreilly (the missing manuals book) but that just provided an over view on the programming and concentrated more on getting your app into the app store. I need need resources that will help be start coding. Other questions: How much of objective C do you need to know? How do go ahead with learning the cocoa framework? Can I directly start on cocoa touch or do I need to know the MAC cocoa framework first? Inputs from someone who was in the same situation (Know c++/c# but no clue about mac programming/objective c/cocoa) would help greatly.

• YouTube: How to Style an AngularJS App on the Device

  I installed the Droid@Screen plugin into NetBeans IDE 8 so that you can see the Android device that I held in my hand while doing the demo below. The demo shows the usage of the Terminal window to create an Ionic Framework application (from "tabs", which is one of the cool templates that the framework provides), i.e., that means I can use AngularJS to create a Cordova application out of the box, with many mobile-oriented components available out of the box. Then I deploy the app to the Chrome browser on Android, which means I can interact with it in NetBeans, e.g., for CSS styling and JavaScript debugging. In this demo, I show how the background color of the deployed app can be changed live from NetBeans. After that, once I'm happy with the styling, I deploy the app again, but this time as a Cordova app, i.e., a hybrid HTML5 application, which means the app is packaged as a native app and deployed directly to the device from NetBeans. I'd be happy to build a dashboard if necessary, but I'm not confident I currently have the skills to accurately display only the correct concise information. Would I use iframes? See if they have APIs? Is there a dashboard framework I could use?

• How can I delay dropbox from starting, but not disable it?

  When I log into my user account on Ubuntu 10.10, there is a unsatisfying delay before my system becomes usable. Even launching a terminal, I have to wait a few seconds before the bash prompt appears. During this start-up period, the top process seems to be dropbox. I'm not sure what it's doing exactly (functionality is still fine as far as I can see), but I do know it really doesn't need to be doing it while I'm waiting for desktop to appear. (This is the standard Ubuntu with Gnome desktop, by the way.) What I would like to do is to be able to have a static or even dependency-based delay for dropbox to start. It would be nice if it waited for, e.g., 10 minutes, or for my browser tabs to load and a typing pause. Then it could churn away on file status or cache-chewing, and I would be happy. Is there a way to do this? Thanks!

  While coding a large project in C I came upon a problem. If I keep on writing more code then there will be a time when it will be difficult for me to organize the code. I mean that the naming for functions and variables for different parts of the program may seem to be mixed up. So I was thinking whether there are useful naming conventions that I can use for C variables and functions? Most languages suggest a naming convention. But for C the only thing I have read so far is the names should be descriptive for code readability. EDIT: Examples of some examples of suggested naming conventions: Python's PEP 8 Java Tutorial I read some more naming conventions for java somewhere but couldn't remember where.

  I love Rich Hickey, Clojure and Haskell and I get it when he talks about functions and the unreliability of side-effecting code. However I work in an environment where nearly all the functions I write have to read from the database, write to the database, make HTTP requests, decrement a user's balance, modify a frontend HTML component based on a click action, return different results based on the URI or the POST body. We also use PHP for the frontend, which is littered with functions like parse_str(), which modifies an object in place. All of these are side-effecting to one degree or another. Given these constraints and the side-effecting nature of the logic I'm coding, what can I do to make my code more reliable and function-able?

  I have been coding PHP for about 2 years now and I THINK that I have a very good grasps of the fundamental parts of PHP, i.e. Functions foreach/IF statements sessions/cookies POST/GET Amongst a few others. • Program To Cascade/Tile Windows

  I have perhaps ten or fifteen windows open. I'd like a program which automatically resizes all the windows and arranges them in columns and rows across the screen (a grid formation), automatically figuring out the largest size for the windows so that they still fit. This isn't an "Expose" type program - I want the windows to stay resized. I am using OpenBox to do my window management and am otherwise happy with it, I don't want to find a whole new window manager just to solve this problem. The program Tile is almost perfect, but it doesn't know how to lay the windows out in a grid formation. Any thoughts? Thanks!

I  have been using the .Net Framework mainly to develop ASP.NET WebApps for some years now and I am moving from using the .Net Framework 2.0 to using the latest features on the 4.x Frameworks, I am planning to document whenever is possible some of the stuff I learn using this space kindly given by the staff of the site. The feedback I get will also be very important for my progress and my plan is to learn a lot from what you guys can teach me with your comments on here.I also found myself with the necessity of putting somewhere code samples because sometimes when you post on forums the entries get locked and you can't do anything to add relevant details on them. The code will either be explained on its entirety or will be posted on a link that has an explained working sample for you guys to test and learn from.My posts will be in English, and I am an intermediate English speaker/writer so bare with me if it's not perfect sometimes, I am always learning something new though.I hope this get to be a useful resource for anyone interested. • C: What is a good source to teach standard/basic code conventions to someone newly learning the language ?

  I'm tutoring someone who can be described as a rank newcomer in C. Understandably, she does not know much about coding conventions generally practiced, and hence all her programs tend to use single letter vars, mismatched spacing/indentation and the like, making it very difficult to read/debug her endeavors. My question is, is there a link/set of guidelines and examples which she can use for adopting basic code conventions ? It should not be too arcane as to scare her off, yet inclusive enough to have the basics covered (so that no one woulc wince looking at the code). Any suggestions ?

  There are many development practices (TDD, continuous integration, cowboy-coding), principles (SOLID, layers of abstraction, KISS), and processes (RUP, Scrum, XP, Waterfall). I have learned you can't follow any of these blindly, but have to consider context and ROI (return on investment). My question is: How do you know whether you are getting a good ROI by following a particular methodology? Metrics, guesstimation, experience? Do analytical methods exist? Or is this just the million-dollar question in software engineering that has no answer?
