  Just to be straightforward, I am completely new to many aspects of coding and am searching for different specs and guidelines to aid me on my journey to crafting a wonderful game in Epic Games' Unreal Engine 4. Okay, I know upon viewing this, some may have little to no clue what I mean, so I'll put it like this to explain what I mean : Imagine a third person game with a simple model of a character. Now, say I have an object as a torso of a character in a game. Now Say I have an object as a head of the character. How could I keep the head as a child of the torso, but at the same time, allow it to move with the camera angle.

• How do I hire testers by giving them a buggy app for testing their efficiency?

  My boss wants to recruit testers based on their testing efficiency (number of bugs identified). So, he's shortlisted 5 people and I need to give them an app full of bugs and see how they fare in reporting obvious bugs, and hidden bugs. I know.... it kind of sounds weird. I guess, this is just like the coding world, where you hire a programmer by assessing his/her programming ability (which is a little easier). Once hired, these testers would be testing a java swing app, so their familiarity of testing frameworks/tools is not really required. So, my question here is - How do I go about finding buggy apps (web/non-web), preferably java ones, that I can have the shortlisted testers have a go at? How would you go about this task if your boss asks you to do so? I am kind of clueless at this point - I googled a bit, thought about finding new apps on sourceforge with lots of bugs, but both approaches didn't work for me.

  I erased Windows 7 and installed Ubuntu 12.04 on my Dell Latitude E4200. I an very happy with my choice but with little pity. I cannot use the wireless service in my university as the build-in device works unstable. I bought a USB wireless device, which solve the problem. However, the build-in device keep to sent me message about unable to connect, which waste laptop's cup & battery. The phsical bottom to turn off wireless affect both devices. So the question is: "How can I manually shut down wireless device?" There is another interest comes to my mind: "Does 2 wireless improve the overall internet usage if I run a high-internet-consuming program like BT ?" Thank for your time and energy.

I was in the process of using "File > Save As" when my phone rang just at the precise instant that, for some reason, made me click on "File > Save" by mistake. • What job is better for a newbie, one that requires you to create a new program frequently, or something like software maintenance?

  One of my friends has just completed his college degree and is ready to join the programmers' world. Today he has two offers, one with new projects every time, and another with software maintenance. The remaining factors are not important to him, what he wants to know is which option is better? My experience goes with second option because my first job was the maintenance one and I could learn how my fellow programmers made mistakes while coding . But I soon switched to a new job which required me to create new project every time. I enjoyed both but I must admit that my first job has given me a more advantage today. But it's not necessary that my experience can give benefit to him. But I want to know what is general approach? If I have to give him final verdict on these two, what should I tell him? • Which specific practices could be called "software craftsmanship" rather than "software engineering"?

  Although not a new idea there seems to have been a big increase in the interest in software craftsmanship over the last couple of years (notably the often recommended book Clean Code's full title is Clean Code: A Handbook of Agile Software Craftsmanship). Personally I see software craftsmanship as good software engineering with an added interest in ensuring that the end result is a joy to work with (both as an end user and as someone maintaining that software) - and also that its focus is more at the coding level of things than the higher level process things. To draw an analogy - there were lots of buildings constructed in the 50s and 60s in a very modern style which took very little account of the people who would be living in them or how those buildings would age over time. Many of those buildings rapidly developed into slums or have been demolished long before their expected lifespans. I'm sure most developers with a few years under their belts will have experienced similar codebases. What are the specific things that a software craftsman might do that a software engineer (possibly a bad one) might not?

• New Bing Maps

  Normally I don't stray too far from Programming and TFS on my blog posts but I'm just really impressed with how much Silverlight has improved Bing maps. I use to be big on MapQuest, then hopped over to Google, but now the new Bing Maps have everything I need. The two coolest features are right on the main page. All you have to do is go to http://www.bing.com/maps/explore/, enter your city and hit enter in the search box, then look in the lower left corner under the EXPLORE section. Check out the "What's nearby" and "Restaurants" links. The best part is, if you're interested in doing any Silverlight programming, they have a Bing Maps Silverlight Control Interactive SDK. I was thinking about coding something....but they've pretty much got it down :) Pretty impressive stuff.

• Simple alternating text in Visual Basic 2008

  I have a simple completed program, but i would like to add one more feature to it but I'm not sure how. I have it set up to send a message automatically every 7 seconds when a text field is selected, repeating the message of course. What I would like for it to do is alternate between two separate messages, instead just repeating the one. I would like the new program to post at an interval of 12 seconds. Can you help me? • What are the advantages and disadventages of git or bzr + rsync vs rdiff-backup?

  I used to use rsync to do backups, but then I switched to rdiff-backup to incremental backups. Recently, I discovered git and bzr while working on a coding project. So, I was thinking, I could have my backup disk be a repository in either git or bzr. Then I could rsync to the repository, and commit the changes. Would there be any performance concerns with this? Any other issues that I'm not thinking of? The benefit I see in using rsync is that you can restart an interrupted transfer, while rdiff-backup reverts to the last version, and then starts again. Any reason not to do it this way? Anything I'm not thinking of?

• How to handle animations?

  I am coding a simple 2D engine to be used with HTML5. I already have classes such as Picture, Scene, Camera and Renderer, but now I need to work on Animations. Picture is basocally a wrapper for a normal image object, with it's own draw method, but this is unrelated, I'm interested in how animation in 2D games is usually done. What I planned to do, is to have the Animation class as well act like a wrapper for a few image objects, and then have methods such as getCurrentImage, next and animate (which would use intervals to quickly change the current image). I meant to feed the animation a couple of PNG's at inicialisation. Is quickly swapping PNG images acceptable for 2D animation? Are there some standard ways of doing this, or are there flaws in my ways?

• Wireless Connection Troubles

  I just recently switched from Windows 7 over to Ubuntu 12.04 and have been experiencing some issues connecting to my home's wireless network. The only way I can get it to connect to the network is by disabling IPv4 and IPv6 settings. Even then while it says its connected to the network (3 bars), I'm unable to access the Internet. It connected for a little while after I first installed Ubuntu, but after the first reboot I haven't been able to access the web at all. I have very basic knowledge when it comes to computers and barely any when dealing with Ubuntu and Linux. I'm very happy with Ubuntu apart from this one issue, as before my computer was overheating and crashing, I've yet to experience any of those problems since installing Ubuntu. The information I can give may be very limited since I'm having to use my cell phone to figure out the solution to this. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance!

• The updated Survey pattern for Power Pivot and Tabular #powerpivot #tabular #ssas #dax

  One of the first models I created for the many-to-many revolution white paper was the Survey one. At the time, it was in Analysis Services Multidimensional, and then we implemented it in Analysis Services Tabular and in Power Pivot, using the DAX language. I recently reviewed the data model and published it in the Survey article on DAX Patterns site. The Survey pattern is the foundation for others, such as the Basket Analysis, and it is widely used in many different business scenario. I was particularly happy to know it has been using to perform data analysis for cancer research! In this article I did some maintenance on the DAX formulas, checking that the proper error handling is part of the formulas, and highlighting some differences in slicers behavior between Excel 2010 and Excel 2013, which could be particularly important for the Survey scenario. As usual, we provide sample workbooks for both Excel 2010 and Excel 2013, and we use DAX Formatter to make the DAX code easier to read. Any feedback will be appreciated!

• Managing time for success in the industry? [closed]

  So about a year ago I decided to pursue programming, specifically game development, as a career. I've always been a pretty avid gamer, from chucking turnips at Shy Guys' faces in the 90s, to downing Heroic Deathwing last week. Just recently though, I've been spending a LOT of time playing games and it's starting to show in my programming classes. Yesterday after a discouraging exam, I put my foot down and vowed to myself to keep the gaming:coding ratio in favor of the one that will hopefully pay the bills later on. I realize that knowing games well is a key part of being a good developer, but as I've been recently shown, there's a threshold of pixelated indulgence that must not be crossed if I'm ever going to land my dream job. I'm assuming many of you are quite enthusiastic about games as well. What advice would you give an aspiring programmer regarding time management? Thanks!! • Rationale behind freeware projects

  I've seen some freeware projects in the past where the author(s) invested a significant amount of their personal time and resources and never even considered charging for the software. A lot of these projects were donation based, and from what I've heard, donationware can never be a viable business model (even to simply support development costs) because most people choose not to donate if given an option. A lot of these projects eventually shut down because their authors could not sustain them further. Granted, some people simply like making the community happy (or something), but if you're struggling to keep your project alive, why not charge some small amount such as $10 simply to stay operational? If people find your software useful (and a lot of people found those projects VERY useful) they won't have a problem paying such a small amount. The question is: if you have a popular app that people like and download in great numbers, why not put a price tag on it? Why do it for free?

• Displaying thumbnails in google search results for flash games?

  Some sites are somehow displaying video preview thumbnails for pages that contain flash games in google search results. For example search for: site:www.thorgaming.com game I see this only on small sites which makes me believe google is not very happy about it. How do they do it and is it ok with google? I assume they are submitting thumbnails through video sitemaps, but I can't find any information about using them with flash games. I also run a few such sites through rich snipped testing tool and it didn't detect any microdata tags on a page.

• downgrade ppa packages to versions available at a previous point in time

  The backstory is that the normal Intel GPU drivers don't do the various OpenGL extensions that my hobby coding and some games want. So I have to install xorg-edgers and then its happy. However, last Wednesday or so there was an update to xorg-edgers - lots of packages - and it broke badly; the drivers lock up and take the whole computer with them; hard reset required. So how can you downgrade - select package versions in a PPA that represent a point in the past, ignoring versions newer than that?

• C programming in 2011

  Many moons ago I cut C code for a living, primarily while maintaining a POP3 server that supported a wide range of OSs (Linux, *BSD, HPUX, VMS ...). I'm planning to polish the rust off my C skills and learn a bit about language implementation by coding a simple FORTH in C. But I'm wondering how (or whether?) have things changed in the C world since 2000. When I think C, I think ... comp.lang.c ANSI C wherever possible (but C89 as C99 isn't that widely supported) gcc -Wall -ansi -pedantic in lieu of static analysis tools Emacs Ctags Autoconf + make (and see point 2 for VMS, HP-UX etc. goodness) Can anyone who's been writing in C for the past eleven years let me know what (if anything ;-) ) has changed over the years? (In other news, holy crap, I've been doing this for more than a decade).

• 14.04 Chinese Ibus Input - No Options

  getting my new 14.04 rig going ;-) Pretty happy with it, everything seems to be working great. For Chinese input, however, having a problem. I went through the typical steps, open language in settings, let it install some stuff, then add Chinese and choose Ibus. Then, after logging in and out, I see the language icon in my system tray. However, when I go to add the Chinese into Ibus, it only lets me choose "Chinese", which isn't an input method. It should give me a bunch of choices like pinyin, bopomo or whatever, I only use pinyin so don't know those names. I saw someone online had a little command which helped people with similar problems, but it did not work for me, even after a re-start. So, anyone got a solution? Edit: Here is what it looks like, just "Chinese" in the list, when there should be a bunch of input options like pinyin, potomofo, and so on.

• Shouldn't we count characters of code and comments instead of lines of code and comments? [closed]

  Counting lines of code and comments is sometimes bogus, since most of what we write may be written in one or more lines, depending column count limitations, screen size, style and so forth. Since the commonly used languages (say C, C++, C# and Java) are free-form, wouldn't it be more clever to count characters instead? Edit: I'm not considering LOC-oriented programming where coders try to artificially match requirements by adding irrelevant comments or using multiple lines where less would be enough (or the opposite). I'm interested in better metrics that would be independent of coding style, to be used by honest programmers.
