• Ubuntu 11.10 problem with Nvidia

  I have an acer with a Gforce graphics card. I installed ubuntu 11.10 and it was working properly until I installed Nvidia drivers via additional drivers, I hit "nvidia-xconfig" in terminal and then reboot. At startup lightdm fails to start. I changed /etc/X11/xorg.conf file back to default and reboot. It works properly, but with the default Ubuntu driver. I want to reconfigure Nvidia and use it. Can anyone tell me what should I do?

• Dual boot to windows 7

  i just installed ubuntu 12.10 alongside windows 7 but now my computer automatically boots to ubuntu. i want windows 7 as my default operating system. when i start up my laptop it shows me no settings or any screen asking me what operating system to use. the ONLY way for me to boot into windows 7 not is to hit f12 at startup to bring up which to boot from, select my hard drive then bring up the grub loader in ubuntu, then select windows 7 loader. when i go into msconfig in windows 7 ONLY windows 7 is listed under the operating systems... i see no ubuntu at all. please help this is really annoying! Thanks.

• Ctrl-Alt-T doesn't open terminal

  I'm using Ubuntu 13.10 and I've been using for a while now as ran it from a daily build about a month ago. It's fully updated with updates, upgrades an dist-upgrades and it was working up until very recently. Not sure exactly when I last issued a Ctrl+Alt+T as I quite often just leave it running however it will have been certainly in the last week. Basically when I hit that key combo I do not get a terminal. I know that each of the keys function as I can Atl+Tab through open applications and I can Ctrl+C to copy and past Ctrl+V to paste and I've typed plenty here that has a "T" in it. I have checked Keyboard Layout in Settings and the correct combo is assigned to the terminal. You'll have to take my word for that as I'm not allowed to post my screenshot!!!!!

• UITableView: Highlighted cell after switching back views

  Hi, I'm using a UINavController together with some UITableViews to display a kind of drill down for some data (e.g. like the Contact App). Works well. The only problem I have is, when I select a cell in the first table view it is highlighted, then the view switches to the next level and then, if I go back to the first level, the cell is still highlighted. So, how can I reset the highlighting when switching back? Thanks for your help. Regards Matthias

Most developers I come across are like this and also tend to be serious penny-pinchers. Let's say, as a developer, I recently released a new software product that I'm pretty sure will be a hit IF people only knew about it.   Is there a way to prevent an annotation in a MKMapView instance from being enabled. In other words, when the user taps the red pin on the map, is there a way to prevent it from highlighting the pin. Right now the pin turns dark when touched...   In a 2D game where you have a lot of possible combination of collision between objects, such as: object A vs object B = object B vs A; object A vs object C = object C vs A; object A vs object D = object D vs A; and so on ... Do we need to create callback methods for all single type of collision? and do we need to create the same method twice? Like, say a bullet hits a wall, now I need a method to penetrate the wall for the wall, and a method to destroy the bullet for the bullet!! At the same time, a bullet can hit many objects in the game, and hence, more different callback methods!!! Is there a design pattern for that?

It only actually tells users how to run JS code on page 311, where users are told of the following solutions: "Client-side JavaScript code is embedded within HTML documents in four ways: Inline, between a pair of <script> and </script> tags From an external file specified by the src attribute in a <script> tag In an HTML event handler attribute, such as onclick or onmouseover In a URL that uses the special javascript: protocol." I was wondering what professional JS developers use to write and test their code: Do they use a good text editor with syntax high-lighting + autocompletion, hit F5 in the browser to reload the page every time they make a change, and use some add-on in the browser to investigate errors? Or are there full-fledged IDE's similar to MS VisualStudio for non-web languages?

  I just removed the poll at 10:52, so this is the final result: My conclusions out of it: While the removal of UltraSPARC I to VI+ support in Solaris 11 may hit some of the people voting in the categories "Wait?" to "6 month", most of the users keep Solaris 10 running on their existing system anyway or migrate that late that even the newest system have reached their end-of-service-live or are near of it, so a migration doesn't sound that feasible. So i assume Product Management was right with their decision to remove the support in order to make the feature i can't talk of possible, as i don't think that many of the early migrators are still using the system in question, as most systems have reached EOSL. Didn't thought that there would be people waiting three years and more ...

• How can I reconnect to a ssh session after a broken pipe?

  So I was running apt-get upgrade on a server when the router decided it had been too long since it last made me angry: It dropped all connection. Moral of the story is to use screen a lot when you're on a bum router. Anyway, I logged back in and found in htop that the process was still hanging there, still waiting for my Y/n to upgrade (hadn't hit it yet, luckily). Is there any way I can reattach to a session that had been broken off? I ended up just killing it since it wasn't in the middle of package management but it would be great to know for future reference.

• possible to use an IP derived from Dynamic DNS in htaccess IP allow/deny commands?

  On a website I manage, I want to use an .htaccess file to allow access to a certain administrative directory only from my home IP address, which is dynamically assigned by my ISP and therefore changes -- not regularly, but it does happen. I also have an account from DynDNS and have one of the auto-update clients making sure it always points to my actual home IP address. I don't actually host anything at home; I just have set up the Dynamic DNS account. Is there any way to combine these features: that is, is it possible write the .htaccess allow/deny commands at my outside webhost in a way that my home IP address is not hard coded into the command, but instead is somehow derived from the Domain Name that the DynDNS has assigned me, by doing a real-time lookup every time the directory's .htaccess file is hit? • How to populate a form list with buttons using javascript

  I made a script that, when you press one button(accessories) the selection(mylist) populates with one array(accessoryData), and when you hit the other button(weapons) the other array(weaponData) populates the selection. However, in the current state of the code the second button press is not re-populating the selection. What is wrong here? Also if there is a more efficient way to do this, that might be helpful. • Blank Screen on 12.04

  Can hit Ctrl-Alt-F1 and login but no fixes work. Tried nomodeset and everything else appears to have upgraded but can't see anything. I really need this computer to work. It is an old Dell with 1.6 processor with old school monitor. I don't know why people are giving my question negative votes. If you know how to fix this, then please help me, as I have read and tried all the solutions that I've found. Just for the record reformatting is not fixing it, and I can't get a boot CD to load either. If you know how to use the blank screen fix tutorial, please explain cos I'm lost. Most people don't understand this stuff and an easy "how-to" fix would be nice.

• Ubuntu 11.10 USB 3.0 HDD

  I have a problem with my external HDD (WD My Book Essential 1TB) working on USB 3.0 port. I'm using dual boot setup with Windows 7 and Ubuntu 11.10, both 64 bit. While I'm running Windows and rebooting back to Windows everything works well. When I'm switchin to ubuntu everything works great as well. But after 1st reboot from ubuntu neither windows nor ubuntu mount the external drive. I have to reboot the device manually. I suspect that the problem is with unmounting the device on shutdown on ubuntu. The case concern only usb 3.0. When i plug the same device into usb 2 port the problem doesn't persist. Does any1 hit the same problem or have a clue what might goin wrong?

• Scripted Motion Paths (?) (XNA)

  Ok, so the title isn't the greatest because this is a lot more general. Say I want to have the player be able to hit A and have their ship model roll to the right, and shift to the right of the screen, while the camera stays centered. Would I do that through programming (ie. set waypoints for the model and keep the camera focus still) or do it through animation ( so the ship model actually rolls and moves right, and just play those frames)(I actually don't know how to do this kind of 3D animation yet, haven't looked into it. • Upgrading Ubuntu to 12.04 stuck

  While upgrading from 11.10 to 12.04, I'm stalled at the step: Installing new version of config file /etc/init/udevtrigger.conf The Terminal in the Distribution Upgrade window is expanded, there is no prompt for user input. I've hit enter a few times but it doesn't change anything but add a blank line after the last print statement. It's been sitting for ~6 hours at this stage. No other windows or dialog boxes are open. The upgrade has progressed through "Preparing to Upgrade", "Setting new software channels", and "Getting new packages". Under the progress bar (which estimates 1 day 2 hours remaining, and has for some time), it says Preparing to configure libpcap0.8. I'd take a screen-shot, but it won't let me save the file anywhere. The progress bar is about 1/3 complete.

Then hit the "Layout Options" button, click on the triangle next to "Caps Lock key behaviour" and select "Swap ESC and CapsLock". but, I'm using Ubuntu Server with no gui, so how would I do this from the command line?

• What is the most cross-browser/system compatible option for 3d graphics on a web page?

  I would like to develop a bit of functionality for a web site that involves a bit of 3D - the user can move around objects, rotate them and texture them. So far I've looked into: WebGL (in particular three.js) and it looks great, but it's not supported in IE nor IOS. IOS supports the <canvas> tag, but only 2d. It looks like three.js has an unsupported hack to make a 3d thing use the 2d canvas instead without textures, but this looks like a hack. I also considered resorting to Flash which works on most browsers, but that won't work on IOS. What's my best option for doing 3d web graphics on the vast array of browsers and interfaces? At the moment I'm thinking WebGL for web (and ask people to use chrome or firefox, and take the hit on IE) and then maybe write a native app for IOS, but I am not sure if there are better alternatives available that I don't know of.

• kernel panic - not syncing vfs unable to mount root fs on unknown-block(1,0) on live cd

  I'm trying to install ubunutu 12.04 on my 2005 PowerMac G5. I've burnt ubuntu-12.04-desktop-powerpc.iso. I try to boot from the live cd. I hit 'enter' to load the live environment. The kernel seems to be fine but then I get this: kernel panic - not syncing vfs unable to mount root fs on unknown-block(1,0) Then it says rebooting in 180........ and hangs. I can't do anything. Any help would be appreciated. Thank you.

It seems much faster than IE 8 and many other browsers and its got lots of cool features. Some of the ones I really like are: New tab format with one click creation and putting them up top.
