• Windows 7 : Any way to disable "show caracter" in WIFI network properties?!

  Hi everyone, Here's my issue. I'm working in a school as IT Tech and I'm currently planning to roll out Windows 7 on students laptop. The issue is : When you go to the properties of a WIFI network, you have the fields to input the WIFI key, WPA2 key here in my case, and you also have a checkbox that allow you to "unmask" the caracters of the wifi key. This is actually the problem. Anyone who can access the WIFI network properties, will be able to see the WIFI key, which is really an issue in a school envrironnement where student are all eager to get the key for their precious IPod Touch, what I don't want to happen for obvious reasons... So, is there a way to disable that checkbox or else, make the field cleared out when the checkbox is checked, just like it was on Windows XP or Vista? Thanks all for your answer.

• Bash delete file when variable = x

  I'm creating a bash script which reboots the system at each reboot it adds a new line to a text file, I then read the text file before each reboot. Once the variable holding the number of lines reaches say 10 I want the script to delete the text file (at which point on the next reboot it will see the file isn't there, brake the loop and promote the user to start again). I tried this: exec < text.txt nol=0 while read line do nol=`expr $nol + 1` done reboot_count=10 if ["$nol" == "$reboot_count"]; then rm text.txt fi but this doesn't seem to be working, all help is appreciated :)

Key to the main node door possesed only by the janitor (or other non-tech and completely non-network-related guy)? • Plesk 9.2 vs. DotNetPanel

  Howdy, Anyone with experience on using both control panels can tell me which one is better suited to run on a windows shared hosting account? I have the option of choosing one of them for my shared hosting account. The web hosting guys (MochaHost) say that DotNetPanel (DNP) is better than Plesk (more features, newer architecture, faster), but looking at the DNP interface I honestly can't say that I agree with them. The big advantage of DNP over Plesk for me is the fact that I can only run .Net 4.0 using DNP (Plesk doesn't support .Net 4.0 yet, as the tech support told me). Thanks

• run or send a command to a tmux pane in a running tmux session

  I want to write a shell script which will attach to a named tmux session, select a window (or pane) in that session and run a command in that selected window (or pane). How do I do this from a bash script? I know tmux new-window -n:mywindow 'exec something' allows you to send commands to a freshly created window. But I need something like tmux select-window -t:0 'my command' I suppose I could use send-keys but seems like their should be something that takes a command or list of commands that get run.

  I am using Monit 5.3.2 in my Linux box. I am monitoring some services using Monit. I want to run a script before the running the restart command. I have used the below conditions for the same. if does not exist for 2 times within 3 cycles then exec "/bin/bash -c 'touch /tmp/somefile'" as uid someuser and gid someuser if does not exist for 10 cycles then restart Unfortunately only the restart action is getting executed. Can anyone please help me to identify why the first rule is not executed ? Is there are any other way to solve the problem ?

• Multiple gcc on Mac OS X

  I did a port install for gcc version 4.7.1 (MacPorts gcc47 4.7.1_2) I named the executable as g+ and placed it in one my $PATH. I use gcc 4.7.1 when I need c++11 standard. I haven't changed the original g++ so as not messup XCode. I am using eclipse-cdt and running the make all from the window. This is on Server 2008 R2, my SQL database (on localhost) instance is named SQLEXPRESS. There is an instance of SQL Express 2008 on the system (hence client 10.0). The database is configured to use a trusted connection, and the .net desktop software deployed on our network PCs is able to access the database without any problem. Am I missing something obvious here, I've done a fair amount of searching for this error message, and haven't found anything that has been particularly useful so far.

• Enable hardware virtualization in BIOS?

  I am running a FOXCONN AM2+ M61PMV with an AMD Athlon II X2 240 Windows 7 ultimate 64 bit. From startup I have hit the del key and the options for enabling the hardware virtualization are not there. I have checked the Microsoft tool that says I can run virtual and i have checked SecurAble, that says yes. But I have an open case w/microsoft (they've been trying for a week [7 tech support people later]) and they're saying that I need to ensure that the hardware is enabled. Where do I go to see? Is there another way besides from the startup?

• Which hosting will let me execute my own EXE with PHP?

  I have a task that PHP (or any server-side scripting language) isn't practical for. It involves a lot of file I/O, processing, etc. and it will execute a lot faster using the program I made in C instead of PHP. Do any hosts allow you to upload your own EXE files and run them on the server using PHP's exec, shell_exec, etc. functions? Do you need a dedicated server to do this? Also, I don't know if Facebook's PHP HipHop is out yet, but I really don't want to use that.

  I have a directory structure composed by: iTunes/Music/${author}/${album}/${song.mp3} I implemented a script to strip my mp3 bitrate to 128 kbps using lame (which works on a single file at time). My script looks like this 'normalize_mp3.sh': #!/bin/bash SAVEIFS=$IFS IFS=$(echo -en "\n\b") for f in *.mp3 do lame --cbr $f __out.mp3 mv __out.mp3 $f done IFS=$SAVEIFS This works fine, if I go folder by folder and execute this command. But I'd like to have a "global" command, like in 4DOS so I can run: $ cd iTunes/Music $ global normalize_mp3.sh and the global command would traverse all subdirs and execute the normalize_mp3.sh to strip all my mp3 in all subfolders. Anyone knows if there is a unix equivalent to the 4dos global command? I tried to play with find -exec but I just managed to get an headache.

• Securely wiping a file on a tmpfs

  I have a script that decrypts some data to a tmpfs, the directory is secure (permissions), the machine's swap is encrypted (random key on boot) and when the script is done it does a 35 pass wipe (Peter Gutmann) of the cleartext on the tmpfs . I do this because I'm aware wiping files on a journaling file system is insecure, data may be recovered. For discussion, here're the relevant bits extracted: # make the tmpfs mkdir /mnt/tmpfs chmod 0700 /mnt/tmpfs mount -t tmpfs -o size=1M tmpfs /mnt/tmpfs cd /mnt/tmpfs # decrypt the data gpg -o - <crypted_input_file> | \ tar -xjpf - # do processing stuff # wipe contents find . -type f -exec bcwipe -I {} ';' # nuke the tmpfs cd .. umount -f /mnt/tmpfs rm -fR /mnt/tmpfs So, my question, assuming for the moment that nobody is able to read the cleartext in the tmpfs while it exists (I use umask to set cleartext to 0600), is there any way any trace of the cleartext could remain either in memory or on disk after the snippet above completes?

  i just purchased a new laptop and had some issues with it... I called tech support and they had me run this command in cmd prompt by right clicking the cmd icon and selecting "run as administrator" with root C:\windows\system32: "Net user administrator /active:no" after it was determined that it didn't fix the issue we ran this code "Net user administrator /active:yes" i then rebooted..and was asked for my windows login for my user account "Rees" as usual.. however ALL my settings where gone (including my desktop files) as though it was the first time I booted up. WHAT in the world happened with this command?? I desperately NEED my user accounts and files back to how they were!! (running windows 7) Please help!

• Login without running bash_profile or bashrc

  So let's say one typoed something in their .bashrc that prevents him (or her) from logging in via ssh (i.e. the ssh login exits because of the error in the file). Is there any way that person could login without executing it (or .bashrc since the one runs the other), or otherwise delete/rename/invalidate the file? Suppose you don't have physical access to the machine, and this is the only user account with the ability to ssh in. • Mount shared folder (vbox) as another user

  I'm trying to mount my vbox shared folder every time my ubuntu starts. So, I added an entry on /etc/init with this: description "mount vboxsf Desktop" start on startup task exec mount -t vboxsf Desktop /var/www/shared Seems to work, except by the fact that all the files are owned by "root", and I don't have permission to write on the folder (neither chmod nor chown seems to be working). So, how can I make all the files under this shared folder to be owned by www-data user/group? Thanks ps.: The main reason for me to have an automatic shared folder, is so I can create/edit files from the HOST on the GUEST www folder. If you have a better idea for that, instead of sharing the folder, fell free to say.

  I'd like to know how to configure my DNS to be able to use a wildcard for my domain and an MX record together. Here is what I've done: @ IN SOA dns100.ovh.net. tech.ovh.net. (2012052100 86400 3600 3600000 300) IN NS ns100.ovh.net. IN NS dns100.ovh.net. IN MX 1 mail.gestixi.com. IN A 91.121.39.211 * IN CNAME gestixi.com. www IN CNAME gestixi.com. The problem is that when I check my DNS, I get this error: MX records shall not point to an alias defined by a CNAME Because of this error, it look like I can't send mails from some internet providers.

• HP Envy webcam pictures all purple

  I have a new HP Envy 15 with an integrated webcam, running Win 7. It works, but all the images are purple, suggesting to me that the red and blue guns are working, but the green isn't. The problem shows up on both their own software and on Skype. I talked to tech support, and they had me update the BIOS, reinstall the hardware BIOS for the webcam, and update the webcam software. It therefore sounds like a hardware problem, but they won't back that unless I do a full restore, which would wipe my disk of all the software I've spent the last couple of weeks configuring. Is there anything else I can try? Other than just buying another webcam, I mean. Any suggestions would be appreciated.

• Is there a way I can use $PATH as defined by my bash profile?

  I spend most of my day ssh'd into servers. I have a series of aliases/functions/scripts that allow me to type p hostname from the terminal and execute GNU screen(1) on the remote side, using the following command: exec ssh hostname -t 'screen -RD'` I've only recently noticed that ssh -t does not get my custom $PATH. Here's some terminal output: adam@workstation:~:0$ sh server 'echo $PATH' /home/adam/bin:/usr/local/bin:/bin:/usr/bin:/opt/git/bin:/opt/git/libexec/git-core adam@workstation:~:0$ ssh server -t 'echo $PATH' /usr/local/bin:/bin:/usr/bin Connection to uranus.plymouth.edu closed. My biggest problem is my custom aliases only try to execute screen, since I can't guarantee an absolute path, and my $PATH is structured so the shell should find the correct one. If my $PATH settings aren't honored, my scripts don't work. Is there a way I can use $PATH as defined by my .bashrc/.bash_profile? I believe PermitUserEnvironment is disabled.

• wmic output well formed xml on remote queries

  I want to use the WMI command line tool (wmic) to get information about windows computers on the network and output it as valid xml. However, I can't seem to find the right way to do this as the outputted xml currently contains invalid tokens for which I think I should use the /TRANSLATE:basicxml switch. The command: wmic /NODE:"tech-demo" /IMPLEVEL:Impersonate /USER:MyUser /PASSWORD:MyPassword /PRIVILEGES:DISABLE /AUTHLEVEL:Pkt /AUTHORITY:"ntlmdomain:companydomain.local" PATH Win32_LogicalDisk GET * /FORMAT:rawxml This command runs but returns invalid xml tokens ('<' and '' I think? edit: it appears to fail parsing at ‹) When I add the translate switch I get the message: Can not use credentials for local connections a bit strange that it tries to query the local pc when I add the switch.. Help would be greatly appreciated.

I started testing, creating Runtime [Runtime.getRuntime (). exec (...)] with all possible methods [addShutdownHook (...);] and now I'm trying to ProcessBuilder [new ProcessBuilder (...);] and the famous BufferedReader [new BufferedReader (new InputStreamReader (proceso.getInputStream ()));] but I could not find the way to do it.   Hi guys. I'm appologizing in advance to the guys who will tell me this isn't a tech/server/IT issue! But I've been beating my head around this for a couple of days now. I'm trying figure out who to talk to, or which company I can approach to try to see if there are Grid/Cloud Computing companies who have programs setup to deal with colleges. I'm dealing with a compsci course, and we're looking at a few projects that would require a great deal of computing/computational resources. But in calling different companies (HP/Rackspace/etc..) I'm either not getting through to the right depts, or to the right people, or the companies just aren't setup for this. There are plenty of companies who have discounts for desktop software/hardware, but who in the biz deals with discounts/offerings for Cloud/Grid Computing solutions?? • background copy large files to a laptop?

  Hey All, I like to watch windows media center recorded TV files on my laptop in bed. I find thought that when the programs are in HD I have a lot of stuttering and delays--no doubt b/c of the amount of data being transferred. I actually have a fair amount of space on the laptop's hdd, and wouldn't mind moving the files onto that hard drive, where no doubt my problem would go away. But that requires some planning & time for the files to move. Is there a utility out there that would kind of 'trickle' the files over to the laptop over a long period of time, w/out soaking its bandwidth? Something like ms' BITS tech? • MSSQL Backup Question

  I'm currently taking over for someone who was in charge of backing up over 250 servers on different platforms, until we hire a replacement. The main question I have is: If we use a backup software, such as Symantec backup exec, does this perform the correct backup for MSSQL Server? I was listening to Stack Overflow Podcast, and I heard them talk about you cannot just backup the SQL data files, but you also need the transaction log? So, if we just backup the whole machine, would we be able to recover it correctly, since we would be backing up the data file and the log? Thanks!

• sed works properly in SSH, not in PHP

  So, I have the following line that I run in PHP with exec($addPHPtags); $addPHPtags = "/bin/sed -i '/<BODY BGCOLOR=\"#FFFFFF\">/ a\ <?php \n ?> '" . $instance['file'] . " 2>&1"; I'd expect that command to find the key and append it with a php tag. However, when I run it in PHP, I get the following error if I trap command output: [0] => /bin/sed: -e expression #1, char 39: unknown command: `?' However, if I run the same command in SSH, it works completely fine: /bin/sed -i '/<BODY BGCOLOR=\"#FFFFFF\">/ a\ <?php \n ?>' file.php I'm out of ideas, I've tried various alternatives but to no avail. Any help ? Thanks.
