• Creating a Jenkins build farm in a hands-off manner?

  My colleague and I have set up and run Jenkins on a KVM guest running Ubuntu 12.04 with good results for a while now. We are thinking about deploying a cluster of Jenkins CI hosts in master/slave configuration, with the libvirt slave plugin to keep our hardware count low. Our environment is strictly Linux (CentOS, Scientific Linux, Fedora, and Ubuntu). Both of us are competent in setting up large clusters. We typically use tools like cobbler + a configuration management tool (Puppet, Chef, and alike) to set up a large number of machines (physical and/or virtual) hands off (hundreds of nodes in less than an hour typical). We would like to do the same for nodes running Jenkins. But the step by step guide doesn't give us any clues in this regard. I did see a Multi-slave config plugin. But, being used to dealing with hundreds or more machines completely hands-off, clicking the UI for many machines just doesn't feel right. Can someone point to us a reference that talks about how to set up large cluster of Jenkins CI hosts more in the hands-off way?

• Configure GNU screen so that it stores command histories in files

  I would like to configure GNU screen such that it stores the command histories of all the different windows in different files. I know by default GNU screen does not store the command histories (of its different windows) in a file at all (it stores them in memory instead), but it might be possible to tell it to store them in files instead? The different command history files should have the names <session>.<window>.history, or similar. Does anyone have an idea how to do that? (Just to be clear, I want each GNU screen window to write a different file. I like that each window has a different history, and I typically run different types of commands in the different windows.)

• SSH to remote host (edgemarc 4200 or 4500 series routers) and pull arp data

  I've been trying to think of a method to do this for days, but have not come up with anything yet. Ideally, this is what I'm looking to do: From a windows XP machine, I need to open an SSH connection to a remote host, send the arp command, and pull the text results of the command back for use on the client. I will need to parse this data and preferably produce a 2D array of IPs and MAC addresses. There will be no shared keys, this is all done with a username and password that will always be different, they will need to be fed into the command via variables that will be pulled from a database using an autoit script based on the WAN ip of the remote host. Now the actual parsing of the data and creation of the array will be easy if I can just get the text of the arp table. Is there any way to ssh to a remote host, run a command and return the data from that command to the client in a batch script or perl script (it is ok if it writes the text to a file, I can read it out of the file later, I just need it to get to the client)?

• marking text in Windows 7's command prompt

  I use Windows 7's command prompt (cmd.exe) for various tasks. In order to copy text from it, I right click and choose Mark, and then mark the text I want to copy. Sometimes while doing this, the marking doesn't stick. The minute I release the left mouse button after marking the text, the marking disappears. This has happened on every Windows 7 installation I've ever installed. How do I solve this?

  Alright, so, I've searched quite a bit on how to do this but I've given up as I simply couldn't find anything. So, I have a code (below); it's main purpose is to get 9 arguments and assign them as a variable-- ignore the echo's and pipping. Terminology is the E17 default terminal, and it have a great command, $ tyls with is a "graphical" $ ls I want to create an alias just for this terminal, because the command "tyls" don't make sense to konsole, rxvt or other terminals. I'm thinking in some kind of "if" in ~/.bash_profile to test if I'm on terminology and then run the following command: alias ls="tyls" But how can I test if I'm in terminology but not xterm?   Instead of typing this in a command prompt one at a time: wmic /node:ipaddress /user:administrator /password:mypassword bios get serialnumber How can I run that against one entire subnet and output to a text document? Since I do this every couple months to verify our inventory of computers, I would assume there would be a much of easier way I could put this in a batch script instead of doing it manually.

  Dear Sirs, I'm trying to run a java process via Powershell in Windows XP. Here's the command: java.exe -cp .;./common.jar -Dcontext=atest1 -Dresourcepath=. DW_Install So, the classpath is . and .\common.jar (I think java takes the wrong slashes, right?) There are two environment variables, one "atest1" the other "." and the class to execute main on is DW_Install (in the default package). This command works in cmd.exe, but doesn't is PS. What's going on? What is PS doing while parsing this command that CMD doesn't do (or vice versa)? Aaron

• Why is hg fetch a deprecated extension? [closed]

  Mercurial's fetch extenson conveniently pulls and merges from a remote repository. Recently, this feature has been deprecated by the developers. They recommend avoiding it and it is on the unloved features list. It is useful in many cases to be able to pull and initiate a merge with one command (which hg pull -u doesn't do). I assume there is a reason behind the deprecation but I haven't been able to find one in the documentation or online. What is the reason behind deprecating it? I'm not looking for opinions, but rather the factual reason behind its deprecation (which might be that the dev team's opinion is that it should not be used).

  I am looking to release and renew my IP address in OS X 10.4 using Terminal. Essentially, I need the OS X equivalent of Windows: C:\ ipconfig /release C:\ ipconfig /renew However, I need the interface to remain active during this process, so using ifconfig down/up will not work. I believe I can clear the IP with ifconfig delete but I'm not sure how to get the dhcp client to reassign the address. An article from 2002 suggests using set dhcp but Apple's ifconfig man page does not include this information.

• Simple HTTP server that will send the same file for all requests?

  I need to debug a XML-RPC application, which sends XML replies over HTTP. I have a sample XML reply (i.e. data from the server, sent to the client that isn't working), I'd like to debug my application. Ideally I'd like a simple HTTP server that will serve one file in reply to all requests. Someone requests /? Send them this file. Someone makes a post to /server/page.php with a certain cookie? Just send them this file. I don't care about multithreading, or security. I will only need to use this for a few hours to debug. I have root on the machine. i.e. I'm hoping there's something as easy to use as this: simple_http_server -p 12445 -f my_test_file I'm aware of python's SimpleHTTPServer module, but I'm not sure how to make it work in this case.

I need this to be very generic, but simply put, at the top, I need it to check to see if it's being run 'As an Administrator'.   I am trying to load the .arx file for a particular program, once the User clicks on the customized tab in AUtoCAD. Requirements are: 1.When User Clicks on the customized tab, it loads the .arx 2.Runs the program 3.Unload the .arx file. I achieved Point 2 by acedRegCmds-(); I tried getting point 1 and 3 working, by using acedArxLoad(_T("C:\Example\Example.arx")); command, but it did not work. Any help with the same would be highly appreciated Also just curious, should loading multiple commands in LISP work for this?

  This is a bit of an embarrassing question, but I have to admit that this late in my career I still have questions about the mv command. I frequently have this problem: I need to move all files recursively up one level. Let's say I have folder foo, and a folder bar inside it. Bar has a mess of files and folders, including dot files and folders. How do I move everything in bar to the foo level? If foo is empty, I simply move bar one level above, delete foo and rename bar into foo. Part of the problem is that I can't figure out what mv's wildcard for "everything including dots" is. A part of this question is this - is there an in-depth discussion of the wildcards that cp and mv commands use somewhere (googling this only brings very basic tutorials).

Preferably, I'd like one as an exact copy of the main SSD and the other with incremental backups of the mysql database and a user uploads file. • Linux: Can I link multiple destinations via softlinks?

  Attempting to end up with something similar to this: $ ls -l lrwxrwxrwx 1 user group 4 Jun 28 2010 foo -> /home/bar lrwxrwxrwx 1 user group 4 Jun 29 2010 foo -> /etc/bar The intention is to be able to move a file to foo & have it go to both destination directories for now. The goal is to eventually unlink /home/bar link after confirming there are no issues with moving the files to /etc/bar. I am restricted in that I am unable to change or add to the process that moves the files.
