  • How to make JWM work in Ubuntu 12.04?

    I have installed the JWM on Ubuntu 12.04 via the Software Centre, but it doesn't work. When I choose the JWM session from LightDM, it only shows a black screen. It worked when I had another computer with Ubuntu 11.10, where I had the same problem after the JWM installation. But once, by chance, I chose to start JWM from a Fluxbox session. And after that, i was able to start JWM also from LightDM. But this solution does not work for me on Ubuntu 12.04. JWM never starts.

  • Ubuntu install and boot failure 11.10

    I installed Ubuntu 11.10 on my machine alongside Vista, and upgraded to 12.4. I decided I liked 11.10 better, so I tried to install that again as my only OS, except I increased the size of the swap file partition to 2 gigs. It boots up fine off the CD, but when I install, it gives me a non-specific error, and returns me to the desktop. When attempting to boot off the hard drive, I get a black screen with a blinking underscore that starts in the corner, drops a couple spaces, and stays there. I managed to install 9.04, and am currently using that. The computer is a little outdated, but was fired up for the very first time last week, so the hard drive is in new condition and the CD rom drive is fine too. Running a 3GHzX2 processor. I ran a memory test, which came back fine, and being new to the linux environment, I've been scratching my head for the last couple days. How can I fix this?

  • Unable to install 12.10 on asus r500v

    I have been unable to get beyond the grub boot screen of the live dvd/usb. The Try Ubuntu without installing, Install Ubuntu, etc menu shows, and I have tried adding/replacing nomodeset and no splash with neither helping. Even "Check disc for defects" does not display anything when selected. I am at a complete loss as to how to fix this one. I have had many successful installs in the past, but this is definitely a first for me. Just as FYI, Gfx card: Geforce GT 635M I realize this particular card has Optimus on it, however even the alternative boot/command line install fails to load. Any help would be appreciated. I realize there have been multiple threads on this, but none of the methods within them have solved this yet. Thanks

  • Booting Ubuntu shows only cursor, no desktop features

    I'm trying to install Ubuntu and have been trying since 2010 on my Win XP (2006-2008 I don't know which year's version exactly). I'm trying to get rid of XP and every time I install Ubuntu it doesn't work. I've tried all the options on the install list from Wubi and from inside the installer. I've tried a lot of different stuff and all it will load is a mouse cursor and a black screen. Please do help out with suggestions/advice. Thanks in advance.

    everytime I try to install ubuntu 12.10 on my laptop i get a blackscreen after clicking on "install ubuntu", "try ubuntu without installation" or "ubuntu live" i tried it with nomodeset, nolapic and acpi=off too but nothing works. Sometimes i even get so a loading screen with nothing but "Ubuntu 12.10" and 4 dots in the middle, after that shortly a blackscreen appears with some text on it and then the complete blackscreen appears. As i tried with "no splash" instead of "quiet splash" it shows me something with graphic and determined in it but it was to fast away in a blackscreen to remember. Has someone any idea what I can do to get this working? Sry for my bad english i'm actually from germany. Sincerely Nalelvon

    My HP Pavillion Dv5 1004nr worked great with Ubuntu up until 11.04. Now, ever since Unity desktop environment the display has been sporadic at best. I was told that the video driver bugs (known and largely ignored) were fixed for the ATI raedon card in my laptop with 13.04. So I installed it. 13.04 doesn't even detect the display. Boots to black screen every time now. Is there ever going to be a fix for the AMD architecture with ATI raedon chipsets? do the developers even care? this has been an issue for years, and no sign of a fix in sight....

  • How to fix Ubuntu 12.04.3 boot to black screen full of errors in white text, after upgrading on dell inspiron 1501

    I am running a Dell Inspiron 1501 I use Linux only. No Microsoft or Apple operating systems (or really anything closed-source). I've only been using Linux for a little over a year but I'm starting to gain a comfortable level of familiarity with the system and terminology. I've been having some issues with Quantel Quetzal and Raring Ringtail, especially with older hardware, so I opted to install Ubuntu 12.04.3 Precise Pangolin on the Inspiron 1501. I checked my MD5 sum after downloading my ISO and all was good. I have in fact used this iso/dvd to install Precise Pangolin successfully on a few other systems (some of which are even older than this laptop). Install goes fine. The wireless card doesn't work out of the box but this is a known issue which is fairly easy to fix. So, first thing I did was open up a terminal and run sudo apt-get update && sudo apt-get upgrade which, part way through, crashed (I assume lightdm and possibly X) and took me to a black screen filled with white lines of text that were either errors or just the ouputs of commands. The reason I say that is because I was unable to gleam any useful information from the output on the screen. I did take a picture however and will post a link. After that, every time I boot the system it goes right to that black screen posting all the error messages or output in white text. I never get a purple Ubuntu splash, so from what I can tell after reading this wiki article: https://wiki.ubuntu.com/X/Troubleshooting/BlankScreen That means that after the kernel is selected, it is unable to correctly implement the settings it needs. If the purple splash never shows, the frame buffer was never set correctly right? This leads me to believe that it could be a kernel issue? The wiki suggested to try and pinpoint the issue by rolling back kernels until I find one that works. Is this my best option? I think I'm going to give it a try anyways and will let everyone know if I am able to solve the issue this way. I have since done a few reinstalls and some trouble-shooting including a couple hours scouring the net for anyone with any kind of similar issue. Most of the issues I could find involved getting a black screen after login and none of them said anything about any information output on this black screen. My reinstalls have taught me that there is no issue updating, but as soon as I run sudo apt-get upgrade my system goes to the black screen and every time I boot it up it does the same thing. The only way to fix is by reinstall. I never get any ability to log in. After a hard power off to the laptop (because I cannot use ctrl+alt+del to reboot) when it boots again it goes to the grub boot menu and I can select between regular boot, recovery mode and the two memtest options. I never tried the memtest options but the other two both lead to the same black screen. Some people having a black/blank screen issue claim to have fixed it by using 12.10 or 13.04 but I believe they were having a different issue where they got a black/blank screen after logging in. I think I will still give these images a try, but mostly figured I would just wait another day or two for 13.10. Other things I figured I would try from the following three articles: After logging in, there's a black screen and my cursor, nothing else! in Ubuntu 12.10 Black Screen on Login After Upgrading to 12.04 I can't get to the login screen include opening a terminal using ctrl+alt+f1 and trying a variety of reseting unity, x settings, lightdm (or switching to gdm); but I doubt this will work or that I will even be able to access a terminal. I'm pretty sure the whole system is stuck after it loads the last line on the black screen. I will try these things and post more information when I have. Hopefully someone has an idea in the meantime and I will keep checking back trying to find a solution. Thank you. Here are 3 different pictures of the error message. Boxes being used: Web Box SQL Box SQL Test Box My Application: I've got aASP.NET Web Application, which references a class library that uses LINQ-to-SQL. Connection string set up properly in the class library. As per http://stackoverflow.com/questions/97594/login-failed-for-user-username-system-data-sqlclient-sqlexception-with-linq-i I also added this connection string to the Web Application. The connection string uses SQL credentials as so (in both web app and class library): <add name="Namespace.My.MySettings.ConnectionStringProduction" connectionString="Data Source=(SQL Test Box);Initial Catalog=(db name);Persist Security Info=True;User ID=ID;Password=Password" providerName="System.Data.SqlClient" /> This connection confirmed as working via adding it to server explorer. This is the connection string my .dbml file is using. The problem: I get the following error: System.Data.SqlClient.SqlException: Login failed for user 'DOMAIN\MACHINENAME$'. Now referencing this http://stackoverflow.com/questions/1269706/the-error-login-failed-for-user-nt-authority-iusr-in-asp-net-and-sql-server-2 it says that's really the local network service and using any other non-domain name will not work. But I am confused because I've checked both SQL Box and SQL Test Box SQL Management Studio and both have NT AUTHORITY/NETWORK SERVICE under Security - Logins, at the database level, that isn't listed under Security - Users, but at the database level Security - Users I have the user displayed in the connection string. At NTFS level on web server, the permissions have NETWORK SERVICE has full control. The reason why I am confused is because I have many other web applications on my Web Server, that reference databases on both SQL Box and SQL Test Box, and they all work. But I cannot find a difference between them and my current application, other than I am using a class library. Will that matter? Checking NTFS permissions, setup of Security Logins at the server and databases levels, connection string and method of connecting (SQL Server credentials), and IIS application pool and other folder options, are all the same. Why do these applications work without adding the machinename$ to the permissions of either of my SQL boxes? But that is what the one link is telling me to do to fix this problem.

  • Fast screen capture and lost Vsync

    Hi, I'd like to generate a movie in real time with a self-made application doing fast screen captures with part of the screen occupied by a running 3D application. I'm aware that several applications already exist for this (like FRAPS or Taksi), and even dedicated DirectShow filters (like UScreenCapture), but i really need to make this with my own external application. When correctly setup (UScreenCapture + ffdshow), capturing an compressing a full screen does not consumes as much CPU as you would expect (about 15%), and does not impairs the performances of the 3D app. The problem of doing a capture from an external application is that the 3D application loses it's Vsync and creates a shaggy, difficult to use 3D application (3D app is only presented on a small part of the screen, the rest being GDI, DirectX) FRAPS solves this problem by allowing you to capture only one application at a time (the one with focus). Depending on the technology used (OpenGl, DirectX, GDI), it hooks the Vsync and does its capture (with glReadPixels,...), without perturbing it. Doing this does not solve my problem, since I want the full composed screen image (including 3D and the rest) AND a smooth 3D app. The UScreenCapture seems to use a fast DirectX call to capture the whole screen, but the openGL 3D app is still out of sync. Doing a BitBlt is too slow and CPU consumming to do real time 30 fps acquisition (at least under windows XP, not sure with 7) My question is to know if there is a way to achieve my goal with Windows 7 and it's brand new DirectX compositing engine? Windows 7 succeeds to show live VSynced duplicated previews of every app (in the taskbar), so there must be a way to access the currenlty displayed screen buffer without perturbing the rendering of the 3D OpenGL app ? Any other suggestion, technology ? thank you

  • Blank black screen with cursor after login -- RHEL5

    I have a RHEL 5 machine here which is a Dell Precision T3500. I'm an Ubuntu guy, but I'm having a heck of a time with this machine. After processing its first security update, we cannot log in via the gdm greeter. A new kernel was installed; then I installed the nVidia drivers for our Quadro NVS 295. I know the X configuration is valid because the gdm greeter does display; however, upon login all we can get is a blank, black screen with a cursor. I thought perhaps our python installation was corrupted but a reinstall via yum has not helped. I have searched & googled extensively for a potential fix for this and can find nothing. Below are outputs from uname, a tail of an error in /var/log/messages, and the Xorg.conf. Can anyone suggest a course of action?   • FormsAuthentication redirecting to login page when visiting root of website

    I wanted to use FormsAuthentication to secure my static files as well on my site, so I followed the instructions located here http://learn.iis.net/page.aspx/244/how-to-take-advantage-of-the-iis7-integrated-pipeline/ under title "Enabling Forms Authentication for the Entire Application". Now though, when I try to visit the site by going directly to http://www.mysite.com I get redirected to http://www.mysite.com/Login.aspx?ReturnUrl=%2f instead of it using my DefaultDocument I have set. I can go to my default document by just visiting http://www.mysite.com/Home.aspx without any issues because it is set to allow anonymous access. Is there something I need to add into my web.config file to make iis7 allow anonymous access to the root? I tried adding with anonymous access but no such luck. Any help would be much appreciated. However, Home.aspx is first in the priority.

  • OSX root user keeps re-enabling itself on reboot

    Running Snow Leopard. Completely inexplicably, I seem to have enabled the OSX root user by accident. I honestly have no idea how it happened, but if memory serves I was looking at the login pane (with my two user accounts) when I must have hit something, and suddenly the two accounts were replaced by one that just said "Other..." Clicking the "Other..." account allows me to type a username and password, but neither of the normal two accounts would work. Since I never set a root password, it wouldn't let me in that way either. So I booted into Single User mode and ran these commands: /sbin/mount -uw / fsck -fy launchctl load /System/Library/LaunchDaemons/com.apple.DirectoryServices.plist dscl . -passwd /Users/root newpassword and that let me login as root. Then, I went to System Preferences, Accounts, Login Options, clicked Join, Open Directory Utility, and lastly in the Edit menu I clicked "Disable Root User" Great, I thought, back to normal. Except rebooting, I still only have the Other... account visible, and the root password I set beforehand doesn't work anymore! I have to reboot into Single User Mode and go through the whole process again just to get back into the system (as root) How on Earth did I accidentally enable this? I didn't even know about the Directory Utility before now. And most importantly, why the heck would it be re-enabling the root user on boot? Thanks in advance to any help!

  • Stretch VMWare Player guest OS to fullscreen

    I’m using VMWare Player to play an old 16-bit Windows game. Unfortunately the game uses only 640x480 and I cannot figure out how to stretch the VM window to full-screen on the host. I set the guest OS to 640x480, but the screen is still small, in the middle of the screen as seen in figure 1. I even tried setting the compatibility mode to Windows 95 and 640x480, but it has no effect (figure 2) and looks exactly the same as when I set the VM to full-screen (1366x768 on the laptop) and start the game normally. There are few references to stretching a VM. One page mentions setting a Stretch Guest option, but there is no such option, at least not in VMWare Player 4.0.3. I know that VirtualBox has a stretching option, but I’m trying to find a solution for VMWare (Player, not Workstation). Figure 1: Guest OS is pillar-boxed Figure 2: Using compatibility mode
