  • Buying Dual Monitors of different size and resolution

    I'm about to go choose a dual monitor setup: 1) Is there any reason why I can't just walk out and buy the two TFT screens I like (a wide screen and a 'portrait' screen) and combine them? Mainly wide screen would be for gaming, and portrait for browsing. I'd want the desktop stretching from one to the other (ie drag pointer, apps from one screen to the other) 2) Also do I need separate gfx cards for each monitor or can one cover both? any performance cost? 3) And can I have separate background images for each, seeing as they'll be different resolutions?

  • ASUS EPC 1015CX won't boot with display after installing additional drivers

    I have a ASUS EPC 1015CX with Ubuntu 12.04 LTS installed using wubi alongside Windows 7. It worked perfectly after installing except that the supported screen resolution was only 800*600 instead of 1024*600. The specifications of the 1015CX device can be found here I tried installing additional drivers which was Broadcom for wireless and Cedarview-drm. By this time there was no display coming up after the boot. I could hear a voice and then the letters I typed got pronounced correctly. So, I guessed the issue has to be with the graphic terminal. I tried repair broken packages in the menu and booted and the display is now at 1024*600. But, if I restart normally the problem continues like before. As per what I found out after searching, I again opened additional drivers and installed Cedarview-graphics-driver. I tried restarting hoping it will work. But again, the result was same. There was no display but the system was working. I did more searching and followed the instructions found here. But still the result was same. I am keen to switch to linux from windows after hearing and learning great things about it. I know this community is good and always helping. I wanted to thank you all for the help in advance. Please let me know what I am doing wrong and help me to switch to linux from this same old windows.

  • Passwordless ssh failed when login using username

    I was trying to setup Hadoop and was stumbled on passwordless ssh to localhost. I am getting a password prompt when trying to connect using ssh username@hostname format. But there is no problem connecting to the machine like ssh localhost or ssh hostname.com. Tried ssh-copy-id user@hostname but it did not work. Using CentOS 6.3 as normal user, I neither have root access or am a sudoer so editing any files like sshd_config is not possible (not even cat the sshd_config file contents). I hope the user login is possible since I can do login without password to localhost, right? Please advise, Here is the ssh debug output.   • White screen on webcam site using Flash Player

    I browsed a webcam site with flash player 10 and it works perfectly. But there is a private chat section and when I enter it I see a big white rectangle where the webcam and chat box should be. What is the problem - it is definitely the flash player, as the page does not prompt me to download the latest flash player... The site was working fine until last week. Does anybody know how to Re-install flash player?

  • How to vertically split widescreen into two virtual workspaces on ubuntu/gnome?

    My new laptop has a big 16:9 screen, and I'm finding it hard to fully utilize it during the 95% of the time that I'm not watching HD movies on it. I'd like to set it up as a kind of virtual dual screen by splitting the physical screen into two workspaces. I know I could arrange my windows manually, but I'd like to be able to maximize a window and have it only consume half the monitor, and have its pop up dialogs centered on its half-screen, that sort of thing. Is there some kind of plug in available to do this? Thanks in advance for any pointers.

    I installed dovecot 2.0.13 with postfix in ubuntu server 11.10 , after installation I can send e-mail with the mail command and dovecot works when I test it with telnet I then installed roundcube on it , and the installation passed all tests. I want to authorize dovecot with system users through pam so I wrote in my dovecot.conf : passwd pam { args = * } and in pam.d/dovecot I wrote : auth required pam_unix.so nullok account required pam_unix.so then when I reload dovecot and try to login it still fails. So how can I solve this ?

  • Rsync: windows 7, synology: login error and permission denied error

    Good day to all of you all, I'm running into strange/stupid errors, and I hope anybody would be so kind to help me out. I have to admit, I am by no means a guru, so please bear with me :-) Situation: -Synology NAS (runs Linux), and Windows 7 desktop (1 normal/restricted user Lisa and 1 admin user). - Data from W7 desktop to be rsynced to synology: /volume1/home/Lisa/Backup - Rsync command: c:\cygwin\bin\rsync -avz /cygdrive/e/Lisa/ [email protected]:/volume1/homes/Lisa/Backup - I've set up ssh per these two threads: a. http://www.cesareriva.com/archives/102 b. http://www.cesareriva.com/archives/112 Now the horrors begin: - root is allowed to run the rsync succesfully, however, he doesn't login automatically (so I can not use rsync in W7 batchscripts, which is of course required). - Lisa is allowed to login automatically but he can not succesfully finish the rsync command because of permission errors: rsync change dir /volume1/homes/Lisa/Backup failed: permissions denied. This happens for each and every file and subdir rsync tries to create. However, the main directory (Backup) is created. When I try to copy files from windows explorer to the directory 'Backup' using the very same user Lisa everything goes smoothly. So, obviously, there is a permission problem somewhere; either my rsync-command isn't correct, or the folder permissions for homes/Lisa aren't correct (but, then again, Windows 7 copies files to that folder without any problems, so that does make me believe the homes/Lisa-permissions don't appear to be the problem). I also tried adding: --chmod=Dugo+x --chmod=ugo+r which I found somewhere on the web, to the rsync-command, but this didn't solve any problem and gave the exact errors. Would anybody please please help me on how to fix this? I am utterly frustrated about this, because I have been trying for 1 month to get everything to work and it simply doesn't work. I bought the big Synology to end the horrors of 20 external USB-disks for once and for all (we have many pictures and home vids of our deceased dogs and want to watch these, the horrors being 'what material is on what disk'). I'll gladly return the favour of somebody helping me out by buying you a nice beer (paypal), if you could end my misery. I am not extremely skilled on Linux (not at all :-( ) so if you could give an extra word when possible so I understand what to do, I'd be very grateful.   • How to Eliminate Black Bars from Powerpoint videos ?

    Hi, I am running a digital signage system for my client. The basic installation is a vertically oriented 42" LCD TV with a 1920x1080 screen resolution (reverse of 1920x1080 when setup normally, i.e. landscaped). Please check out the following link for a basic screen divisions layout I want to setup. http://flickr.com/photos/55097319@N03/5410208856 In the division labeled "ppt" I plan to run a powerpoint presentation. The screen division is 360x1476 resolution. As there isn't an option in powerpoint to specify slide size in terms of resolution so according to this article on indezine http://indezine.com/products/powerpoint/books/perfectmedicalpres02.html to get a screen resolution of my preference I divided 360 and 1476 each by 72 which gives me 5"x 20.5" as the slide size for my ppt. After setting up slide size as per above dimensions, I used sizer (http://brianapps.net) to resize my ppt window to 360x1476 so that when I record I do not get any black bars. But after launching recording there are side black bars visible which camtasia records and brings-inside cam studio with black bars. http://www.flickr.com/photos/55097319@N03/5409597049 My question is that after doing the above and as explained in the following video link why do I still get black bars. http://feedback.techsmith.com/techsmith/topics/eliminate_black_bars_in_your_powerpoint_recordings Is there an option in camtasia to stretch the recording to cover up black bars or any other alternative way I can get rid of those black bars while I get a ppt recorded as per my preferred dimensions. Notes: In the techsmith video above it asks to adjust my desktop screen resolution which my display chipset does not allow me to set. I set up show in powerpoint to be "browsed by an individual(window)". Also signage software only supports swf's and video file formats natively and not ppt, pptx etc. Thanks bhavani.

    I have a program that draws some items to the scene by loading their positions from a file. Now I want to place a Ray on the same location where the items are drawn. So my question is how can I calculate the position of the ray (it's 2D components) by using 3D coordinates of each particular item? The items don't move anywhere, so once they are placed they stay until the end of the programs execution. Thanks.

  • Trying to install ubuntu netbook 10.10 but it hangs on the "who are you" screen

    I have an acer aspire one ZG8 netbook, and I have wanted to put ubuntu on it for some time. But it won't install. It has wiped windows from my hard drive already, so I cant go back to the horrible 7 starter edition that came with this netbook. Would really love a way to fix this, but right now I am using the the "Try ubuntu" aspect just so I have use of the Internet. No idea if I will be able to download an older version and try again from here or what to do... Any help would be great.

    Hello There, this is my first Serverfault Question: I found myself this afternoon Setting up a Win Server 2008 R2 system for use with Team foundation source code control, and in order to give team-mates right to connect, i had to create user account for each of them (10 persons) (I can't and I don't want to create a domain). The point is that, after that, all that user accounts are showing in the login screen. Can i set those accounts to not show there? How? Thanks in advance

  • Ubuntu purple splash screen with blinking pixels?

    I had ubuntu 9.10 I upgraded to 10.04 after solving some problems (freeze at boot). Since then, I don't have the ubuntu's logo showing up when I boot, but a purple screen with some blinking pixels. I didn't care much about it... but today my computer took too long at that screen (normally it was just 1/4 second, but today it was like a minute..). And it happened like 4 or 5 times in a row (Only at the 5th time I realised that it was not freezing up, but it simply would took more time) After a reboot, it is again 1/4 second of purple screen but I don't want this problem to return.. so I want to get rid of the purple screen (I think it is an indicator of the problem) Well, I already installed the graphic drivers (going to system admnistration hardware drivers). But it didn't solve anything. (I don't know if it is even related) I searched in google, found something old (2006) and I think it maybe has some relation with my problems .. http://ubuntuforums.org/archive/index.php/t-294692.html But couldn't understand the conversation (i'm a linux novice) Sorry for my horrible english..   • Can't install or update Ubuntu after using parameter acpi_osi = Linux

    I recently had an issue with my acer 4736z notebook because I was having a blank screen after booting the OS, then someone told me to use the parameter GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX_DEFAULT = "quiet splash acpi_osi = Linux" after quiet splash inside the grub.   • Power scheme faulty

    Hi, I use a laptop. When I take the power cable out to run on batteries, the screen darkens, as it is no longer so bright, to save on battery power. When I put the power cable back in, the screen brightens back to it's original brightness. However, I have since replaced the power cable, and the screen remains darkened. A domain user account was created with same username and password as my previous local administrator account. Now I unable to login using my local account. I tried loggin in using SERVERNAME\Username, but it is giving incorrect password error message. Is there any way I can retrieve or create a new local administrator account on a domain computer

  • Set a specific screen resolution with xrandr

    So I installed LUbuntu 11.04 on my VirtualBox. I couldn't find the 1366x768 resolution so I installed Guest Additions but it wasn't there. So I used this code to set the correct resolution: gtf 1366 768 60 xrandr --newmode "1368x768_60.00" 85.86 1368 1440 1584 1800 768 769 772 795 $ xrandr --addmode VBOX0 1368x768_60.00 xrandr --output VBOX0 --mode 1368x768_60.00 The problem is that I can't find a way to save this information for the next reboot. I tried on .xinitrc and nothing happens. Then I tried on .bashrc but it's not working, I need to start a console before this commands are executed.

    What happens if I pierce a TFT monitor screen with something sharp (say a nail)? Will only the pierced region malfunction or the whole monitor screen? There's an opinion that in this case the entire screen will "flow out" (more specifically - "liquid crystals will flow out") and stop working completely. Is that truth or an urban legend?

  • How can I debug VNC screen repainting issues?

    I have what some might consider a trivial use for VNC, but I'd like to get it to work and it's technically interesting to me. My use case is that I'd like sometimes to be able to control my desktop from my living room while watching tv. The desktop runs Ubuntu, currently 12.04, but that may change soon. I'm using the default Vino server. I'd like to control it from my IPad and I have a nicely performing WiFi. I got the well-regarded (if reviews can be believed) app Vnc Viewer for the iPad. It's not working as well as I'd hoped. The problem is the speed of repainting. It's abysmally slow. I can click a close button, walk over to the desktop and see that the window has closed, but on the iPad, the VNC Client won't show the close for minutes if ever. I've noticed that CLOSING windows takes a lot longer to update than to open them. So the question is is this primarily client or server-caused? And if server-caused what can be done about it? Is Vino the best client or is something else better? Thanks
