• Nagios orphaned services warnings

  We have had Nagios running on one of our servers with out any problems for a while but lately certain old service warning have been reappearing and then disappearing on the service detail page. From looking at the logs I found warning like the following. Warning: The check of service 'Tomcat' on host 'virtual1' looks like it was orphaned (results never came back). I'm scheduling an immediate check of the service... Has anyone ever came across this before or at least know a way to delete the old Orphaned Warnings. The Nagios Version we are running is Version 3.0b7 so an update might be in order. Thanks.

• Can not connect to telnet server

  So, I can't use telnet to connect to any server but it works fine from a different computer. It just says it can't connect. I tried the following things: Disable firewall and AV protection. (Basically, there was no security feature left online) Telnet is set to "Trusted" in my AV protection. (Kaspersky Internet Security 2011) Using Putty to telnet, but apparently Putty's connection is also inhibited. (Says it can't connect to host) Disabling the telnet client in Control Panel and then re-enabling it. (Windows 7 Ultimate) hosts file is clean. Checked for nasties using MBAM and KIS 2011 as well as going though my HijackThis logs, nothing found. I can connect to the same machines/servers through the web browser, ping, tracert, etc. Only telnet seems to be blocked. Any other thoughts?

• Proper application shutdown before windows xp auto shutdown

  I frequently leave the computer on playing a movie or downloading a file while I go to bed. I do use the 'shutdown computer when finished' feature of KMPlayer or getright or uTorrent or whatever program I am using. This method effectively shuts down the computer, but the problem is that there are some applications that seem to exit forcefully when doing this kind of shutdown, this being clearly reflected in winamp not saving the current playlist and config, messenger not saving the chat logs, etc. My goal here would be to have automatically close properly all applications when the auto/scheduled program triggers it. I am looking for some Windows shutdown mode/setting that does application closing like the user would do. I am not expecting to auto-click on save dialogs prompts, if this is needed I will do it before leaving the computer on for auto shutdown.

• Problems with kickstart script, partition info crashes deployment

  Hi, Currently testing cobbler, but have problem with the kickstart script when the partition information is loaded. Here is my ks: http://pastebin.ca/1824343 I can't figure out what is the problem with the partsection at all. Without it, it works. I've even tried autopart. If the entry is removed, it works, but of course I have to provide the installer with partition information. Under the kickstart an python exception is raised. I get a Errno 2 No such file or directory. My Apache logs states: File does not exist: /var/www/cobbler/links/CentOS-5.3-x86_64/images/updates.img File does not exist: /var/www/cobbler/links/CentOS-5.3-x86_64/disc1 File does not exist: /var/www/cobbler/links/CentOS-5.3-x86_64/images/product.img But without the part information, no error occours. What am I not seeing? Cobbler 2.0.3, imported the CentOS 5.3 x86_64 DVD, PXE booting from a Xen guest.

• SSRS Subscription Fails

  Our SSRS server is not executing a subscription correctly. (Only subscription we have btw) We created a subscription to export a report as an excel file to the file system. Tried running the job that gets generated, and this error happens 'EXECUTE AS LOGIN' failed for the requested login 'NT AUTHORITY\NETWORK SERVICE'. The step failed. It's not the most helpful in tracking down what exactly it was trying to do. • NTFS file size, how do you guys refresh it to view its current correct size

  I work in a command prompt quite often and around many large (remote) log files. Unfortunatelly, the sizes of these files do not update as the logs grow, unless it would appear the files are touched. I usually use hacks like the following from Cygwin to "touch" the file so that its file size updates: stat file.txt or head -c0 file.txt Are there any native Windows constructs that can refresh the file size from the command prompt, as unintrusively as possible and preferrably without transferring any (remote) data, since I often need to refresh the sizes of very large files remotely, to see how large they have grown.

• Strange behavior of logRotate?

  Hello, I have the following configuration of logrotate: /var/log/test/app.log { missingok notifempty compress copytruncate daily rotate 4 } The application generating the log is a Java application. 2 I set up this configuration yesterday before midnight. Today in the morning I noticed that logRotate made a file called "app.log.1", which only had log entries between 8:21 AM and 10:05 AM. app.log was logging since 10:05 AM. All the logs before 8:21 AM were missing! Furthermore, "app.log.1" wasn't even compressed. Do you know what could've caused this?

• How do you enable syslogd to accept incoming connections on Snow Leopard from remote loggers?

  How do I get syslogd to accept incoming connections from remote hosts on Snow Leopard? I'd like to centralize logging such that various devices and systems send logs to Snow Leopard's syslogd, which normally hangs out on UDP 514. However, I'm unable to get them to successfully be accepted by good ole syslogd. I tcpdumped on the Snow Leopard box to verify that packets are being spouted to port 514 -- they are. I checked that syslogd is listening on 514 -- it's not. Googling around told me that, on older versions of OSX (don't you love the way things change so rapidly on OSX), one just had to add a flag to the syslogd daemon to allow remote; one did this in com.apple.syslogd.plist. However the syslogd daemon has no flags (at least in its man page) that suggests any remote anything. What's the solution to this? Secondary, less import but relevant question: What's 'newsyslog'? I see a plist file but it's not running (apparently). Thanks

• VMware Server Guest OS Random Shutdown

  Anyone encounter a problem in which the Guest OS in VMware Server randomly shuts down? This has happened about once a month, where VMware Server just shuts down ALL guests OS. The host machine is fine, and you can log into the web management of VMware Server, it's just all guest OS get shutdown with no apparent reason. Even the logs say vmware guest os so and so was shut down, but no details why. This is not just one one machine, we have VMware server installed on three different PowerEdge servers and they all have encounter the same problem. We've tripped checked all settings and nothing is out of the ordinary.

• https post message fail, where is server log?

  I am receiving an error when sending a https post message to my server and I am looking to get more information. I am looking for ssl error log in apache but I cannot find it. I have looked in /usr/local/apache/logs/secure and I don't see the proper error. Should I be looking in a different place? UPDATE: Fyi, the connection is timing out or being lost when I use https and I am trying to figure out why. When I use http it works fine.

• Middle Mouse Button does not work in XFCE / Arch Linux

  I have the XFCE desktop manager installed on my Arch Linux system. With E17 (Enlightenment desktop manager) i had no problems with my mouse: all buttons worked correctly out of the box. But in XFCE my middle mouse button does not fire an event at all (no output with xev). Evdev seems to identify my mouse correctly (Razer Deathadder) because it echoes its name in the xorg logs. • Why would the 'show processlist' command speed up normally slow requests to my remote DB? (connected via VPN)

  I am running a local Django development server that connects to a remote MySQL server via a VPN (IPSec). Request times are awfully slow and I consistently see timeouts. Attempting to diagnose the problem, I logged in to the remote database and ran: show full processlist Immediately, the local server went from idle to working. The page had not yet completely loaded, but progress had been made (debug logs confirm this). When I ran 'show full processlist' several times more in succession, the request completed quickly. I can currently reproduce this - unless I run 'show full processlist' over and over on the remote server, my local request usually times out. Does anyone have any idea why this would happen? I'm running Django 1.3 and OS X 10.7. Note: I realize this may be entirely not be a question with a clear-cut answer and is probably my fault, but it is odd and reproducable, so I hope someone can at least point me the right direction. • SCCM 2007 managing hosts in non trusted forest

  I have an implementation of SCCM 2007 in forest "A" that manages hosts in that Windows 2008 forest. There is another forest/domain, "B", which I have no trust with that I need to manage hosts in as well. I don't need to push out clients from the SCCM console, I am going to install them manually. I just need the hosts in domain "B" to connect back to the forest/domain "A" for management purposes. To date, I have not added any AD objects to domain "B" for hosts to query for site, SLP or management point info. I am installing the hosts with the command line: ccmsetup.exe /mp:SCCM_Server /site:mysite SCCM_Server = FQDN of my sccm server (which is resolvable by the client) There are no ACL's between the two servers. From the logs, I can see the install complete and the client tries to query the local AD for the site info for "mysite" but it can't find it and it stops and never connects. Can anyone give me some direction as to how this should be setup?

• Why might login failures cause SQL 2005 to dump and ditch?

  Our SQL 2005 server began timing out and finally stopped responding on Oct 26th. The application logs showed a ton of 17883 events leading up to a reboot. After the reboot everything was fine but we were still scratching our heads. Fast forward 6 days... it happened again. Then again 2 days later. The last night. Today it has happened three times to far. The timeline is fairly predictable when it happens: Trans log backups. Login failure for "user2". Minidump Another minidump for the scheduler Repeated 17883 events. Server fails little by little until it won't accept any requests. Reboot is all that gets us going again (a band-aid) Interesting, though, is that the server box itself doesn't seem to have any problems. CPU usage is normal. Network connectivity is fine. We can remote in and look at logs. Management studio does eventually bog down, though. Today, for the first time, we tried stopping services instead of a reboot. All services stopped on their own except for the SQL Server service. We finally did an "end task" on that one and were able to bring everything back up. It worked fine for about 30 minutes until we started seeing timeouts and 17883's again. This time, probably because we didn't reboot all the way, we saw a bunch of 844 events mixed in with the 17883's. Our entire tech team here is scratching heads... some ideas we're kicking around: MS Cumulative Update hit around the same time as when we first had a problem. Since then, we've rolled it back. Maybe it didn't rollback all the way. The situation looks and feels like an unhandled "stack overflow" (no relation) in that it starts small and compounds over time. Problem with this is that there isn't significant CPU usage. At any rate, we're not ruling SQL 2005 bug out at all. Maybe we added one too many import processes and have reached our limit on this box. (hard to believe). Looking at SQLDUMP0151.log at the time of one of the crashes. There are some "login failures" and then there are two stack dumps. 1st a normal stack dump, 2nd for a scheduler dump. • Postfix virtual_alias stealing emails from virutal_mailbox

  I am trying to setup a "catchall" address. In my virtual_mailbox table I have emails setup like so: select * from virtual_users; id | domain_id | password | email ----+-----------+---------------------------------------------- 3 | 1 | ***************** | [email protected] 4 | 1 | ***************** | [email protected] That works great on its own. When I try to add a virtual alias for the catchall: select * from virtual_aliases; id | domain_id | source | destination ----+-----------+-------------------+--------------------------- 1 | 1 | @domain.com | [email protected] Once I add that virtual_alias, all email is going to catchall and I can send any to [email protected]. Is there something I need to do to shift around the priority? • Mysql stopped working

  Mysql is up and running on my system but i can not login with any user. I also cannot start/stop/status the server. • Windows Resource Monitoring Programs

  I work at a small tech start up managing websites with our own in house server side code. (In production, we use Windows Server 2008 boxes, running Java 6. In our dev boxes, we use Windows 7 running Java 7.) Recently, we had an issue where some of our boxes in production failed, and we didn't have means of trouble shooting, since we keep little to no monitoring logs about a given box's CPU/memory/RAM usage, etc. So, I'm wondering if there is some commercial/freeware that's the standard for performance monitoring/logging. Essentially, I'm just looking for an analytics system that is similar to the Windows Task Manager or the Resource Monitor, that serializes all of its data periodically. Ideally, I'd like to find a program that's also extensible, in case I'd like to add addition monitors in the future.

• E-mail from specific domain not delivered to one of the cc: recipients on Exchange 2010

  we have a user on Exchange 2010 server who doesn't get email from one specific domain if her address is in cc: field. If she is a main recipient (To:) it goes through. We checked Exchange logs and it looks like our server doesn't even try to deliver it, it simply ignores her email address completely. We did several tests: send email with her email address in cc: field from another domain, succeeded send email with her email address in to: field from another domain, succeeded send email with her email address in to: field from affected domain, succeeded turn off all email rules check via webmail We also turned off firewall, antispam and antivirus for SMTP rule. Does anyone have any idea what could be an issue here? Thanks

• Http 400 'Bad Request' and win32status 1450 when larger messages are sended to a WCF service

  Hi all, we sometimes receive Http 400 bad request resultcodes when posting a large file (10mb) to a WCF service hosted in IIS 6. We can reproduce this using SOAP UI and it seems that it is unpredictable when this happens. In our WCF log the call is not received, so we believe that the request does not reach the ASP.NET nor WCF runtime. This happens on multiple websites on the same machine each having their own application pool. All IIS settings are default, only in ASP.NET and WCF we allow bigger readerQuota's etc.... The win32status that is logged in the IIS log is 1450 which we think means "error no system resources". So now the question: a) how can we solve this b) (when a is not applicable :) ) which performance counters or logs are usefull to learn more about this problem? greetings, Tim

• Server 2008 Hard Faults

  Hey all, plase bear with me as I haven't looked at a server in a very long time. The problem I am having is with a Windows 2008 Standard FE Service Pack 2 Intel Xeon X3430 @ 2.40 2.39 GHZ 4 GB Memory 64 Bit There seems to be no problems other than the physical memory peaking at 91%, always with over 100 Hard Faults Per Second. To my understanding hard faults should be fairly rare on a machine with. Are there any logs I can show you? Or investigate myself. The general performance of the machine is ok, i can access SBS2008 and change settings fairly smoothly without hangs etc. However, we connect to the server and do quite a bit of SQL via an application. For a record to retrieve say 20 rows, it can take 20+ seconds. • How do I tell logrotate what files to rotate with cron?

  On my webserver I have this file: /etc/logrotate.d/apache2 I know it is logrotating /var/log/apache2/.log, but if I want to add things that are in /usr/home/www/site1/logs/.log do I just duplicate everything below and stick that line in there? Each time I add a new site do I need to manually add lines to this file?
