• SQL SERVER – Speed Up! – Parallel Processes and Unparalleled Performance – TechEd 2012 India

  TechEd India 2012 is just around the corner and I will be presenting there on two different session. SQL Server Performance Tuning is a very challenging subject that requires expertise in Database Administration and Database Development. I always have enjoyed talking about SQL Server Performance tuning subject. Just like doctors I like to call my every attempt to improve the performance of SQL Server queries and database server as a practice too. I have been working with SQL Server for more than 8 years and I believe that many of the performance tuning concept I have mastered. However, performance tuning is not a simple subject. However there are occasions when I feel stumped, there are occasional when I am not sure what should be the next step. When I face situation where I cannot figure things out easily, it makes me most happy because I clearly see this as a learning opportunity. I have been presenting in TechEd India for last three years. This is my fourth time opportunity to present a technical session on SQL Server. Just like every other year, I decided to present something different, something which I have spend years of learning. This time, I am going to present about parallel processes. It is widely believed that more the CPU will improve performance of the server. It is true in many cases. However, there are cases when limiting the CPU usages have improved overall health of the server. I will be presenting on the subject of Parallel Processes and its effects. I have spent more than a year working on this subject only. After working on various queries on multi-CPU systems I have personally learned few things. In coming TechEd session, I am going to share my experience with parallel processes and performance tuning. • Can't configure PAM + LDAP on Debian Lenny - Getting error=49 on server logs

  I've been migrating some servers and desktops using Ubuntu 10.04 from getting the users from an old OpenLDAP implementation to a newer Centos Active Directory. I haven't had any problems so far, until I reached a Debian Lenny server. I've set up the server as the others, setting /etc/ldap.conf and /etc/ldap/ldap.conf. However, when I issue "getent passwd", I get nothing from the LDAP server. Reading the pam_ldap manpage, I realized that /etc/ldap.conf was not an accepted file by pam_ldap -it worked with Ubuntu though-, so I renamed it to /etc/pam_ldap.conf. Same result. Maybe this is not supported by Debian Lenny? On pam_ldap.conf, I've set up this, as in all the other servers: # Do not hash the password at all; presume # the directory server will do it, if # necessary. This is the default. pam_password md5 Also tried clear, but it didn't work. Anyways, it's weird that issuing getent passwd still gets me no users.   I've been wondering why when I set the settings.py of my django project 'arvindemo' debug = Flase and deploy it on Apache with mod_wsgi, I got the 500 Internal Server Error. Env: Django 1.4.0 Python 2.7.2 mod_wsgi 2.8 OS centOS Here is the recap: Visit the homepage, go to sub page A/B/C/D, and fill some forms, then submit it to the Apache server.   I have a policies in a system PolRef Start End POL123 22/11/2012 23/12/2014 POL212 24/09/2012 23/10/2012 POL214 23/08/2012 29/09/2012 I am asking a user for a reporting date, the user enters 24/10/2012 this becomes @StartDate From this I derive what the quarter is by the month: set @currentMonth = Month(@StartDate) if @currentMonth = 1 or @currentMonth = 2 or @currentMonth = 3 begin set @startmonth = 1 set @endmonth = 3 end if @currentMonth = 4 or @currentMonth = 5 or @currentMonth = 6 begin set @startmonth = 4 set @endmonth = 6 end if @currentMonth = 7 or @currentMonth = 8 or @currentMonth = 9 begin set @startmonth = 7 set @endmonth = 9 end if @currentMonth = 10 or @currentMonth = 11 or @currentMonth = 12 begin set @startmonth = 10 set @endmonth = 12 end I then get a date range: @quarterStartDate = CAST(CAST(YEAR(@StartDate) AS varchar) + '-' + CAST(@startMonth AS varchar) + '-' + '01') AS Date) @quarterEndDate = CAST(CAST(YEAR(@EcdDate) AS varchar) + '-' + CAST(@endMonth AS varchar) + '-' + '31') AS Date) This will give me 01-10-2012 and 31-12-2012. Basically I need a script to only bring back the policies that are in this quarter. The policy doesn't have to span the entire quarter date range, just exist in the quarter date range. The results expected would be PolRef Start End POL123 22/11/2012 23/12/2014 POL212 24/09/2012 23/10/2012 Pol123 appears because it spans over the quarterly date range. Pol212 is there because it expires in that quarter date range. Pol214 does not appear because it neither spans, expires or starts in this quarter. Any help would be greatly appreciated

  Concatenating  string is one of the most common tasks in SQL Server and every developer has to come across it. We have to concat the string when we have to see the display full name of the person by first name and last name. In this video we will see various methods to concatenate the strings. SQL Server 2012 has introduced new function CONCAT which concatenates the strings much efficiently. When we concat values with ‘+’ in SQL Server we have to make sure that values are in string format. However, when we attempt to concat integer we have to convert the integers to a string or else it will throw an error. However, with the newly introduce the function of CONCAT in SQL Server 2012 we do not have to worry about this kind of issue. It concatenates strings and integers without casting or converting them. You can specify various values as a parameter to CONCAT functions and it concatenates them together.   Just getting this off the bat, I presume this will also work for Blend 5, but I can’t confirm it… Anyhews, I imagine you’re here because you want to know how to create an addin for Blend, so let’s jump right in there! First, and foremost, we’re going to need to ensure our development environment has the right setup, so the checklist: Visual Studio 2012 Blend for Visual Studio 2012 OK, let’s create a new project (class library, .NET 4.5): Hello.Extension The ‘.Extension’ bit is very very important. The addin will not work unless it is named in this way. You can put whatever you want at the front, but it has to have the extension bit. OK, so now we have a solution with one project. To this project we need to add references to the following things: Microsoft.Expression.Extensibility (from c:\program files\Microsoft Visual Studio 11.0\Blend\   -- x86 folder if you are on an x64 windows install) Microsoft.Expression.Framework (same location as above) PresentationCore PresentationFramework WindowsBase System.ComponentModel.Composition Got them? ACE. Let’s now add a project to contain our control, so, create a new WPF Application project, cunningly named something like ‘Hello.Control’… (I’m creating a WPF application here, because I’m too lazy to dig up the correct references, and this will add all the ones I need ) Once that is created, delete the App.xaml and MainWindow.xaml files, we won’t be needing them. You will also need to change the properties of the project itself, so it is only a class library. Once that is done, let’s add a new UserControl, which will be this: <UserControl x:Class="Hello.Control.HelloControl" xmlns="http://schemas.microsoft.com/winfx/2006/xaml/presentation" xmlns:x="http://schemas.microsoft.com/winfx/2006/xaml" xmlns:mc="http://schemas.openxmlformats.org/markup-compatibility/2006" xmlns:d="http://schemas.microsoft.com/expression/blend/2008" mc:Ignorable="d" d:DesignHeight="300" d:DesignWidth="300"> <Grid> <TextBlock Text="HELLO!!!"/> </Grid> </UserControl> Impressive eh? All that’s left now is to code up our extension… So, add a class to the Extension project (name wise doesn’t matter), and make it implement the IPackage interface from the Microsoft.Expression.Extensibility library: public class HelloExtension : IPackage { /**/ } We’ll implement the two methods we need to: public class HelloExtension : IPackage { public void Load(IServices services) { } public void Unload() { } } We’re only really concerned about the Load method in this case, as let’s face it, the extension we have doesn’t need to do a lot to bog off. The interesting thing about the Load method is that it receives an IServices instance. This allows us to get access to all the services that Expression provides, in this case we’re interested in one in particular, the ‘IWindowService’ So, let’s get that bad boy… private IWindowService _windowService; public void Load(IServices services) { _windowService = services.GetService<IWindowService>(); } Nailed it… But why? The WindowService allows us to register our UserControl with Blend, which in turn allows people to activate and see it, which is a big plus point. • Why is Backbone.js a bad option in the Technology radar 2012 of thoughtworks?

  In the latest Technology Radar 2012 they state that Backbone.js has pushed to far on it's MVC abstraction and say that Knockout.js or Angular.js should be used instead. I cannot get why they think that Backbone.js model is bad, for me it's just a way to create a standard so people can have some kind of roadmap to dev frontend JS without Spaghetti code. Also for me Angular and Knockout solve a different problem, I like both of them but having to code all MVC classes is something I think is kind of a rework. The thing is simple easy extendable and fast to learn, comes with a lot of goodies and is easy to combine with other Frameworks. (see Knockback.js) Can anybody tell me what made it so bad to their eyes ?
