  This following question by Jeff was in 2010 and I wanted to check how things have changed in the past 2 years. My problem: I run a site with most of the content distributed to subdomains that’s are user based. E.g: Joe.example.com John.example.com Jil.example.com So all of these subdomains have the content and the main site example.com becomes a mere dummy listing all the subdomains. Now the question is, as of 2012, how is google treating domain authority and page rank in this case? I understand the notion of page rank as page per se but when it comes to domain authority will the parent domain have the cumulative effect of the domain authority or will it be spread out?

• How can I launch Matlab 2012 on Ubuntu 12.04?

  I have a problem with the MATLAB 2012 installation. After having installed it using alt+f2 and having used gksudo nautilus I have installed MATLAB in the correct folder which is: /usr/local/MATLAB/R2012a Then I inserted the license and the window told "activation complete" or something like that. This made me happy, but only for a while because as soon as I try to search for Matlab within the applications I cannot find it and neither if I try to run matlab into terminal it says: command not found Can someone help me!? Maybe is the format (in Europe we have europass that is a standard) that doesn't fit the work of a developer, I don't know. Or maybe it's only me: it's 2012 and I start thinking that showing a list of projects and a bunch of acronyms in a CV like PHP, HTML, JS, CSS, whatever is quite boring for a recruiter. • Unattended Windows XP Install Stops at Deleting Previous Installation

  I'm not sure if I'm just not asking Google properly or what, but I can't come up with a good answer to this problem. We have MDT 2010 setup and have a Task Sequence for refreshing Windows XP machines. It doesn't seem to happen all the time, but a lot of the time when we start a refresh it goes through the normal motions and when it gets into the first part of Windows XP setup (the blue screen) it stops, telling me a Windows installation already exists at that location and I can press L to continue, erasing everything and using that folder. I've poured over the unattend file and can't find an option that will just delete the old files and keep going, so I'm at a loss. Any ideas?

• Driver problems with rerunning WIM capture

  How do I handle driver problems associated with creating a new WIM file using a previously created image as a base? I am using a custom MDT image which installs Windows 7, Office 2010, etc which was created from a previously deployed base image of Windows 7 + SP 1 + updates. When the driver injection is enabled I receive a group of messages (collected from different logs, screens, etc). If I turn the preinstall driver injection off things work as expected. If I leave it on I receive the following messages. windows cannot install required files 0x80004005 8004004 non zero return code ltiapply rc=31 Unhandled error returned by LTIApply: a device attached to the system is not functioning. (-2147024865 0x8007001F)

• 501 Error during Libjingle PCP on Amazone EC2 running Openfire

  I am trying to implement Google's Libjingle (version: 0.6.14) PCP example and I am getting a 501: feature not implemented error during execution. Specifically, the error occurs after each "account" has connected, been authenticated and began communicating with the other. An abbreviated log of the interaction is provided at the end. I have set up my own jabber server (using OpenFire on an Amazon EC2 server), have opened all of the necessary ports and have added each "account" to the other's roster. The server has been set to allow for file transfers. My being new to working with servers, I am not sure why this error is occur and how to go about fixing it. Thanks in advance, AeroBuffalo P.S. • Email sent from Centos end up in user spam folder

  I am facing this issue, I use the default postfix MTA in centos but the mail end up in user spam folder, but this does not seem to be a problem in Debian using exim4, both host have hostname and domain name configured, and relay mail through external smtp host. Both configuration and recieving email header are attached. The different seems that Debian has this additional (envelope tag) and (from) tag other than some minor syntax differences. Any help to resolve is appreciated. • SQL SERVER – Step by Step Guide to Beginning Data Quality Services in SQL Server 2012 – Introduction to DQS

  Data Quality Services is a very important concept of SQL Server. I have recently started to explore the same and I am really learning some good concepts. Here are two very important blog posts which one should go over before continuing this blog post. Installing Data Quality Services (DQS) on SQL Server 2012 Connecting Error to Data Quality Services (DQS) on SQL Server 2012 This article is introduction to Data Quality Services for beginners. We will be using an Excel file Click on the image to enlarge the it. In the first article we learned to install DQS. In this article we will see how we can learn about building Knowledge Base and using it to help us identify the quality of the data as well help correct the bad quality of the data. Here are the two very important steps we will be learning in this tutorial. Building a New Knowledge Base  Creating a New Data Quality Project Let us start the building the Knowledge Base. Click on New Knowledge Base. In our project we will be using the Excel as a knowledge base. Here is the Excel which we will be using. There are two columns. One is Colors and another is Shade. They are independent columns and not related to each other. The point which I am trying to show is that in Column A there are unique data and in Column B there are duplicate records. Clicking on New Knowledge Base will bring up the following screen. Enter the name of the new knowledge base. Clicking NEXT will bring up following screen where it will allow to select the EXCE file and it will also let users select the source column. I have selected Colors and Shade both as a source column. Creating a domain is very important. Here you can create a unique domain or domain which is compositely build from Colors and Shade. As this is the first example, I will create unique domain – for Colors I will create domain Colors and for Shade I will create domain Shade. Here is the screen which will demonstrate how the screen will look after creating domains. Clicking NEXT it will bring you to following screen where you can do the data discovery. Clicking on the START will start the processing of the source data provided. Pre-processed data will show various information related to the source data. In our case it shows that Colors column have unique data whereas Shade have non-unique data and unique data rows are only two. In the next screen you can actually add more rows as well see the frequency of the data as the values are listed unique. Clicking next will publish the knowledge base which is just created. Now the knowledge base is created. We will try to take any random data and attempt to do DQS implementation over it. I am using another excel sheet here for simplicity purpose. In reality you can easily use SQL Server table for the same. Click on New Data Quality Project to see start DQS Project. In the next screen it will ask which knowledge base to use. We will be using our Colors knowledge base which we have recently created. In the Colors knowledge base we had two columns – 1) Colors and 2) Shade. In our case we will be using both of the mappings here. User can select one or multiple column mapping over here. Now the most important phase of the complete project. Click on Start and it will make the cleaning process and shows various results. In our case there were two columns to be processed and it completed the task with necessary information. It demonstrated that in Colors columns it has not corrected any value by itself but in Shade value there is a suggestion it has. We can train the DQS to correct values but let us keep that subject for future blog posts. Now click next and keep the domain Colors selected left side. It will demonstrate that there are two incorrect columns which it needs to be corrected. Here is the place where once corrected value will be auto-corrected in future. I manually corrected the value here and clicked on Approve radio buttons. As soon as I click on Approve buttons the rows will be disappeared from this tab and will move to Corrected Tab. If I had rejected tab it would have moved the rows to Invalid tab as well. In this screen you can see how the corrected 2 rows are demonstrated. You can click on Correct tab and see previously validated 6 rows which passed the DQS process. Now let us click on the Shade domain on the left side of the screen. This domain shows very interesting details as there DQS system guessed the correct answer as Dark with the confidence level of 77%. It is quite a high confidence level and manual observation also demonstrate that Dark is the correct answer. I clicked on Approve and the row moved to corrected tab. On the next screen DQS shows the summary of all the activities. It also demonstrates how the correction of the quality of the data was performed. The user can explore their data to a SQL Server Table, CSV file or Excel. The user also has an option to either explore data and all the associated cleansing info or data only. I will select Data only for demonstration purpose. Clicking explore will generate the files. Let us open the generated file. It will look as following and it looks pretty complete and corrected. Well, we have successfully completed DQS Process. The process is indeed very easy. I suggest you try this out yourself and you will find it very easy to learn. • Video on Architecture and Code Quality using Visual Studio 2012&ndash;interview with Marcel de Vries and Terje Sandstrom by Adam Cogan

Adam Cogan did a great Web TV interview with Marcel de Vries and myself on the topics of architecture and code quality.  It was real fun participating in this session.  Although we know each other from the MVP ALM community,  Marcel, Adam and I haven’t worked together before. It was very interesting to see how we agreed on so many terms, and how alike we where thinking.  The basics of ensuring you have a good architecture and how you could document it is one thing.  Also, the same agreement on the importance of having a high quality code base, and how we used the Visual Studio 2012 tools, and some others (NDepend for example)  to measure and ensure that the code quality was where it should be.  As the tools, methods and thinking popped up during the interview it was a lot of “Hey !  I do that too!”.  The tools are not only for “after the fact” work, but we use them during the coding.  That way the tools becomes an integrated part of our coding work, and helps us to find issues we may have overlooked.  The video has a bunch of call outs, pinpointing important things to remember. These are also listed on the corresponding web page. I haven’t seen that touch before, but really liked this way of doing it – it makes it much easier to spot the highlights.  Titus Maclaren and Raj Dhatt from SSW have done a terrific job producing this video.  And thanks to Lei Xu for doing the camera and recording job.  Thanks guys ! Also, if you are at TechEd Amsterdam 2012, go and listen to Adam Cogan in his session on “A modern architecture review: Using the new code review tools” Friday 29th, 10.15-11.30 and Marcel de Vries session on “Intellitrace, what is it and how can I use it to my benefit” Wednesday 27th, 5-6.15 The highlights points out some important practices.  I’ll elaborate on a few of them here: Add instructions on how to compile the solution.  You do this by adding a text file with instructions to the solution, and keep it under source control.  These instructions should contain what is needed on top of a standard install of Visual Studio.  I do a lot of code reviews, and more often that not, I am not even able to compile the program, because they have used some tool or library that needs to be installed.  The same applies to any new developer who enters into the team, so do this to increase your productivity when the team changes, or a team member switches computer. Don’t forget to document what you have to configure on the computer, the IIS being a common one. The more automatic you can do this, the better.  Use NuGet to get down libraries. When the text document gets more than say, half a page, with a bunch of different things to do, convert it into a powershell script instead.  The metrics warning levels.  These are very conservatively set by Microsoft.  You rarely see anything but green, and besides, you should have color scales for each of the metrics.  I have a blog post describing a more appropriate set of levels, based on both research work and industry “best practices”.  The essential limits are: Cyclomatic complexity and coupling:  Higher numbers are worse On method levels: Green :  From 0 to 10 Yellow:  From 10 to 20  (some say 15).   Acceptable, but have a look to see if there is something unneeded here. Red: From 20 to 40:   Action required, get these down. Bleeding Red: Above 40   This is the real red alert.  Immediate action!  (My invention, as people have asked what do I do when I have cyclomatic complexity of 150.  The only answer I could think of was: RUN! ) Maintainability index:  Lower numbers are worse, scale from 0 to 100. On method levels: Green:  60 to 100 Yellow:  40 – 60.    You will always have methods here too, accept the higher ones, take a look at those who are down to the lower limit.  Check up against the other metrics.) Red:  20 – 40:  Action required, fix these. Bleeding red:  Below 20.  Immediate action required. When doing metrics analysis, you should leave the generated code out.  You do this by adding attributes, unfortunately Microsoft has “forgotten” to add these to all their stuff, so you might have to add them to some of the code.  It most cases it can be done so that it is not overwritten by a new round of code generation.  Take a look a my blog post here for details on how to do that. Class level metrics might also be useful, at least for coupling and maintenance.  But it is much more difficult to set any fixed limits on those.  Any metric aggregations on higher level tend to be pretty useless, as the number of methods vary pretty much, and there are little science on what number of methods can be regarded as good or bad.  NDepend have a recommendation, but they say it may vary too.  And in these days of data binding, the number might be pretty high, as properties counts as methods.  However, if you take the worst case situations, classes with more than 20 methods are suspicious, and coupling and cyclomatic complexity go red above 20, so any classes with more than 20x20 = 400 for these measures should be checked over. In the video we mention the SOLID principles, coined by “Uncle Bob” (Richard Martin). One of them, the Dependency Inversion principle we discuss in the video.  It is important to note that this principle is NOT on whether you should use a Dependency Inversion Container or not, it is about how you design the interfaces and interactions between your classes.  The Dependency Inversion Container is just one technique which is based on this principle, but which main purpose is to isolate things you would like to change at runtime, for example if you implement a plug in architecture.  Overuse of a Dependency Inversion Container is however, NOT a good thing.  It should be used for a purpose and not as a general DI solution.  The general DI solution and thinking however is useful far beyond the DIC.   You should always “program to an abstraction”, and not to the concreteness.  We also talk a bit about the GRASP patterns, a term coined by Craig Larman in his book Applying UML and design patterns. GRASP patterns stand for General Responsibility Assignment Software Patterns and describe fundamental principles of object design and responsibility assignment.  What I find great with these patterns is that they is another way to focus on the responsibility of a class.  One of the things I most often found that is broken in software designs, is that the class lack responsibility, and as a result there are a lot of classes mucking around in the internals of the other classes.  We also discuss the term “Code Smells”.  This term was invented by Kent Beck and Martin Fowler when they worked with Fowler’s “Refactoring” book. A code smell is a set of “bad” coding practices, which are the drivers behind a corresponding set of refactorings.  Here is a good list of the smells, and their corresponding refactor patterns. • Windows 7 AIK help

  I've just got in a few Windows 7 (64, Windows 7 Professional) machines, and I'm trying to get the AIK 2010 working. I've set up one of the machines, and installed AIK and MDT on it. I've followed the directions at http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/dd349348%28WS.10%29.aspx about 3 times now, and also tried the built-in .chm help files that came with AIK. In AIK I grab the install.wim image off the OEM cd, at which point it asks me which version (I select Professional). I follow the rest of the instructions creating a new Autounattend answer file, and fill in the various bits and pieces according the the step-by-step guides. I verify the Answer file (No warnings or errors), save it, and copy it onto a USB drive. I go to another machine, insert it's OEM Win7 Disk, and power on. I've set BIOS to boot from CD, so it goes directly into the installation. Once The files are loaded, and Setup starts, it immediately asks which version to install (Home basic, Home Premium, Professiona, Ultimate). Ugh, I thought it was supposed to be an automated install, and that selecting the Version when opening the .wim file would answer this question. I looked for an option to set which version to be installed on the net, in the help, and in AIK itself; to no avail. Anyway, just for laughs I select Professional,and hit continue. It copies files for about 10 seconds, then fails with the following error: "Setup was unable to create a new system partition or locate an existing system partition. See the setup log files for more information. [OK]". Clicking OK reboots the box, and obviously there are no log files because the OS isn't installed. It is a Dell Optiplex 380 , Intel Core Duo 2.93 GHzl 4 GB RAM, 64 Bit. Any help would be REALLY appreciated.

  The 2012 edition of the Oracle EMEA Cloud Partner Community Forum took place on march 28&29 in Madrid. 100 participants from all over Europe had a chance to interact with the Oracle Cloud CRM Product Management team about multiple subjects such as Oracle Cloud CRM and Social Network solutions strategy, RightNow acquisition, Fusion CRM Business opportunities for partners, etc. During his opening keynote, Anthony Lye (Oracle Senior Vice-President and head of Oracle CRM) presented the current Fusion CRM business status, disclosed the overall Oracle CRM product strategy and responded to many questions from the audience. Later on that day, 8 Oracle ISV's presented their Oracle Cloud CRM add-on's and highlighted the value that System Integrators can benefit from as part of a Cloud CRM project. After a very friendly networking diner in a Spanish restaurant, the second day was dedicated to Fusion CRM, with a deeper dive into its major components (Sales, Sales Planning, Marketing) including the Fusion Composers. Briefings on Oracle Consulting Services Fusion CRM dedicated offerings and Fusion CRM Partner Programs concluded the day and the event. All participants rated the event as "good" to "Excellent" and mentioned that it was meaningful for them to plan their Oracle Cloud CRM based business in the near future. • WebCenter Customer Advisory Board meetings kick off Oracle Open World 2012!

  Welcome to OpenWorld! OpenWorld 2012 got underway today with a series of meetings with the members of the WebCenter Customer Advisory Board. Led by the WebCenter Product Management team, these meetings are a great way for the product team and customers to directly interact and discuss real-life business challenges, product details and to discuss upcoming features and functionality. This year, board members participated in discussions around live demos around product enhancements that will be featured throughout the coming week. Highlights included a variety of new mobile and social solutions, a great new user interface for WebCenter Content plus new Portal and Sites functionality that makes the experience for the everyday user a lot more pleasant. The day kicked off with Roel Stalman, VP of Product Management, giving a detailed overview of what’s new in WebCenter. Given all the improvements to discuss, this session went over 2 hours! Roel showcased the brand new UI for Content, Portal and Sites. He also gave live demos of the new mobile apps for WebCenter Content, Portal and the Oracle Social Network.  The attendees then broke into sub-groups in order to deep-dive with Product Management for the Portal, Sites, and Content product areas on specific functionality and application integrations. If you are here in San Francisco this week for OpenWorld, I definitely recommend stopping by the WebCenter area in the Moscone West Exhibition Hall to see some of this new functionality for yourself. And be sure to check out the WebCenter sessions throughout the week as those give us a chance to discuss direction and strategy, answer your questions and get your feedback and ideas. • Want to be a Speaker at Oracle OpenWorld 2012?

  Yes, your calendar is correct. It is March. But planning has already started for Oracle OpenWorld 2012. So if you want to be a speaker and propose your own session for this year's event in San Francisco on September 30th - October 4th, starting thinking now!  The annual OpenWorld Call for Papers is now open until April 9th! All of the details to submit a paper are available here. Of course we are interested in sessions around any of the Oracle CRM products, but the Call for Papers is open to all Oracle topics. When submitting your topic, be sure to describe what you plan to discuss and the value of the presentation to other attendees. Sell your session, because there will be a lot of competition to be selected. Bonus News: Speakers for selected sessions receive a complimentary full conference pass! • Read Oracle Certification Program's December 2012 E-Magazine now!

  Hello Everyone, The big news in this edition of our Oracle Certification E-Magazine is related to a change in the way that exam results are provided at the end of the test (using our CertView tool). This significant process change for the Oracle program sets the stage for tighter integration of candidate information and exam/certifcation results. Additionally, it helps give every certification holder access to important tools available in CertView. The new process was implemented in November and so far it is going very well. Much of the success of this new initiative is due to you (following the new process)! We are continuing to work to expand the functionality of CertView to better help you use your certification as a tool to help improve your career. Also in this issue of the E-Magazine, we are announcing several new offerings. We have a new SQL Tuning certification as well as a new Exam Preparation Seminar. We have continued to release new Exam Preparation Seminars and Exam Preparation Seminar Value Packages and we are receiving good feedback. We hope that you will consider employing one of these seminars to help you prepare for your next certification exam. They are now even available on iPad!
