• Show javascript execution progress

  I have some javascript functions that take about 1 to 3 seconds. (some loops or mooML templating code.) During this time, the browser is just frozen. I tried showing a "loading" animation (gif image) before starting the operation and hiding it afterwords. but it just doesnt work. The browser freezes before it could render the image and hides it immediately when the function ends. Is there anything I can do to tell the browser to update the screen before going into javascript execution., Something like Application.DoEvents or background worker threads. So any comments/suggestions about how to show javascript execution progress. My primary target browser is IE6, but should also work on all latest browsers

• 7-minute Community GlassFish Clustering Screencast

  Community member Faissal has recently put up a 7-minute screencast of an un-edited setup of a GlassFish cluster. His clustering setup spans across a mac and a virtualized Ubuntu host. It can probably be further simplified using the SSH provisioning feature (asadmin install-node) to avoid logging into remote machines. You may remember John's GlassFish clustering in under 10 minutes, a very successful video which was based on version 2. • Problem installing Oracle 10g Express edition

  I have installed Oracle 10g Express edition in Ubuntu 10.10 and it doesn't show or ask to give my password during installation. When I click on "start database" it gave the warning "Operation failed, abhi is not a member of 'dba' group." and when clink on "Run SQL command line" it shows /usr/lib/oracle/xe/app/oracle/product/10.2.0/server/bin/nls_lang.sh: 114: [[: not found When I click on "GOTO Database home page", it opens Mozilla's "Ubuntu Google search page". Can anyone help me get my Oracle to work or tell me how to remove that because it is also not getting removed. I tried all the commands that are given as suggestions by Ubuntu. Please help me because I don't want to format my Ubuntu.

• Why do some opensouce libraries lack comments?

  I don't know if this happens to most Opensource libraries, but many of I know and use (for example OpenSSL, Webkit, ...) they all lack comments, or contain very few comments. Not to mention their very few documents, it is hard to read their source code. We can hardly understand what a member variable means, or what this function does. This seems to be against coding standard practice Why is that? How can people collaborate to these opensource with very few comments?

  Do you need a separate datasource for each gridview if each gridview is accessing the same database but different tables in the database? I'm getting an error on AppSettings that says non-invocable member. What is the problem with it? • Where to store shaders

  I have an OpenGL renderer which has a Scene member variable. The Scene object can contain N SceneObjects. I use these SceneObjects for storing the vertex position and any transforms. My question is, where should shaders be stored in this arrangement? I guess they need to be in a central location because multiple objects can use the same shader. But then each object needs access to the shader because it needs to set attributes into the shader. Does anyone have any advice?

• Sanity checks vs file sizes

  In your game assets do you make room for explicit sanity checks, or do you have some generally expected bounds which you assert? I've been thinking about how we compress data and thought that it's much better to have the former, and less of the latter. If your data can exceed your normal valid ranges, but if it does it's an error, then surely that implies you're not compressing the data well enough? What do you do to find out if your data is compressed as far as it can be, and what do you use to ensure your data isn't corrupted and ensure it's an official release? EDIT I'm not interested in sanity checking the file size, but instead, how you manage your sanity checks and whether you arrange the excess size caused by the opportunity to do sanity checks by using explicit extra data, or through allowing the data enough file space (data member size) to be out of valid range and thus able to be checked merely by looking at the asset in memory after loading.

• Why will show() only work for fields that are hidden using inline css?

  I am hiding an element using inline css, like so: <span class="hidden-nojs" style="display:none">Some text</span> Next I use jQuery to show the element, like so: $(".hidden-nojs").show(); This works great. As soon as I remove the inline css and put display:none on the external css stylesheet for the hidden-nojs class, it stops working. This is what I wrote in the external stylesheet: .hidden-nojs { display: none; } I'm assuming that the external stylesheet loads after the jQuery has already run? This is somewhat annoying as I would like to hide multiple elements with css and would like to avoid using inline css. Why will show() only work for fields that are hidden using inline css? How can I fix this problem?

• How do I draw video frames onto the screen permanently using XNA?

  I have an app that plays back a video and draws the video onto the screen at a moving position. When I run the app, the video moves around the screen as it plays. • jQuery UI - Datepicker - Hide year

  Hi, I'm using jQuery UI 1.8 and I would like to hide the year from the user in both the popup and the textbox. Essentially instead of picking the day, month and year I want the user to just pick the day and month. Hiding the year in the textbox is easy enough, the code shown below will do that. In more detail, I am interested in using Mono from project start on a Linux host developing in C# using Visual Studio for development, ideally with remote debugging if that is realistic developing web-services in MONO accessible in a RESTful manner, returning JSON hiding the services processes behind an Apache access the services either via javascript/AJAX or from a thin script layer written in PHP scalability is important for me unit-testing of webservices Any recommendations for material I could sift through to get a good head-start? I might add that I'm C#/.NET savvy, but not in the context of web development. I've been using it since it came out, but mainly for internal server-client applications where the clients were Windows desktop apps and the communication layer was remoting or, sometimes, more low-level socket-based. • Static classes in PHP via abstract keyword?

  According to the PHP manual, a class like this: abstract class Example {} cannot be instantiated. If I need a class without instance, e.g. for a registry pattern: class Registry {} // and later: echo Registry::$someValue; would it be considered good style to simply declare the class as abstract? If not, what are the advantages of hiding the constructor as protected method compared to an abstract class? Rationale for asking: As far as I see it, it could a bit of feature abuse, since the manual refers to abstract classes more as like blueprints for later classes with instantiation possibility.

• How to set up bridged networking in Xen?

  I have 2 domU virtual machines installed on a 11.10 Oneiric Dom0. My internal network is on the 192.168.1 subnet, and when the domU's start, they get ips on the 192.168.122 subnet. I have attempted to follow the instructions here : http://wiki.kartbuilding.net/index.php/Xen_Networking xend-config.sxp is configured correctly, but neither of my domU's have a config file in /etc/xen to modify. ifconfig reports that I have the following devices : eth0, lo, tap3.0, vif3.0, vif4.0, virbr0 bridge-utils is installed. I also just attempted to follow these steps : http://serverfault.com/questions/233201/bringing-the-xenbr0-interface-up-on-xen-under-ubuntu-8-04 sudo brctl addbr xenbr0 sudo brctl addif xenbr0 vif3.0 device vif3.0 is already a member of a bridge; can't enslave it to bridge xenbr0. Any ideas on next steps are greatly appreciated!
