• Clone a Red Hat RAID as part of a disaster recovery plan

  I am looking for recommendations to clone a Red Hat mirrored raid to a single hard drive located in the same machine. The idea is if the servers hardware ever has an issue we have a similar hardware machine ready to go. All we would have to do is pop in the cloned drive. If the servers RAID ever failed we could just switch to the single drive to maintain uptime and restore the original configuration on the spare server with a backup. This is a restaurant and they are open 7 days a week. We do have time from 12:am to 9:00am to perform the necessary steps for a clone and we talking about under 10 Gigs of information. There is a database on the server. I have looked into Rsync and Clonezilla. But I am just not confident either is capable of completing the task I want. Looking for some suggestions and possibly a step by step if you could be so kind.

• Apple Mail Rules application

  I've got a Mac running Apple Mail and a bberry, both checking the same mail accounts. One account is pop and two accounts are IMAP. The Mac is asleep during the day. While out and about, I'll check my mail on the bberry, read the new messages, and leave them in my inbox. When I come home, I wake up the Mac, and Mail syncs with the server. The filtering rules are not applied to messages that are previously read via bberry. Can I apply rules to 'read' messages? I've tried to select emails in the inbox and then apply rules to them, but that doesn't move the message.

• I need a few minutes of dedicated server a week, but not for hosting, just to convert ogg etc

  I'm completely happy with my webhosting, it's just that I need to do one little thing they won't allow, and that's run an instance of Sox to convert about 30 mp3s to ogg files, in various directories, a couple of times a week, to be done automatically in response to the detection of the upload of an mp3. Probably looking at a minute of server time over the whole week. I've had unhelpful suggestions on other forums like "why not leave your home PC on 24 hours a day and then use all your isp bandwidth to do this", which doesn't work for me. I know that I can host files on, say, Amazon S3, but is there something similar for my needs? All it would need to do would be: wget/ftp the mp3 files, convert them to ogg, ftp the files back to my hosting. Of course, all this wouldn't be needed if there was such a thing as a compiled binary of Sox (or any mp3ogg converter) for Centos which I could upload without needing root access, but I've given up asking that one, but always open to suggestions!

  I have a column of email addresses on sheet 2 col A (but I could put them on sheet 1 if it would make it easier / faster) that I want to remove from sheet 1 col D if matched (there may be 2 or more occurences of the same email to be removed/cleared). (1000s of rows in each sheet). After all day searching forums I’m getting more confused & can't find what I'm looking for. Not sure whether to use .match or .find & .ClearContents & the syntax for iterating through. Thanks very much in anticipation Peta

• How can I start an X11 session on my headless Fedora 13 server?

  I have a small home server using Fedora 13 as operating system. Since the upgrade to Fedora 13 I cannot start the X11 server. (I need it to use vnc) When I try to start the server, both the nouveau and the original NVIDIA driver claim that there's no physical monitor attached (which is true) and that the X server cannot start because the initial display modes cannot be probed. I tried to manually add the display modes to xorg.conf but they seem to be ignored. Some forums suggest to simply use the VESA driver in this situation, but since I can't get it run either (different, more obscure message) I want to get it working with the nouveau driver as a matter of principle. Temporarily attaching a monitor would mean a lot of work for me ( 1 hour and currently it's almost 35°C/95°F in my home) I want to try that only if that definitely fixes the problem and stays that way if I remove the monitor again) How can I make the driver work without having a physical monitor attached? • vim: highlighting a search term without moving the cursor

  Using Vim, I sometimes find myself staring at a section of source code for a while and suddenly want some variable on the screen to pop out. That's easy: /<var> which highlights them all. My issue is that it more often than not the search shifts my window so I'm not looking at the source code from the same place. Even if it's only shifted a few lines, it's still throws me off since I need to take a few seconds to figure out where things have moved to. Is it possible to highlight a search term without moving the cursor to the next match?

• Windows 7 blocks network access to network-installed apps

  Windows 2008 R2 domain. Users, running Windows 7 Enterprise, are trying to run some software from a network share. Specifically, I've tested this with MATLAB and PuTTY. When starting, MATLAB has to contact a licensing server to get its license. This action fails for regular users when they start MATLAB from the network share. However, if they copy the installation directory to a local disk everything works fine. Running MATLAB as an admin user from the network share also works. Same story with PuTTY. If the executable is launched from the share, regular users cannot connect to any servers. Something is blocking network communications for programs that are launched from a network drive.   I am having a difficult time grasping what is the correct way to read the size of the files since each command gives you varying results. I also came across a post at http://forums.devshed.com/linux-help-33/du-and-ls-generating-inconsistent-file-sizes-42169.html which states the following; du gives you the size of the file as it resides on the file system. ( IE will will always give you a result that is divisible by 1024 ). ls will give you the actual size of the file. What you are looking at is the difference between the actual size of the file and the amount of space on disk it takes. ( also called file system efficiency ).   Please pardon the newbie question, but I can't seem to figure this out. I followed the Voxilla's tut to the tee: http://voxilla.com/2009/10/15/voxill...p-by-step-1457 But in making calls, my softphones connect, yet no audio (in either direction). I know from poking around the forums that this is generally caused by two factors: NAT and audio codecs. I (being new to the arena), however, don't know which. I believe I have Asterisk and the clients restricted to just ulaw, and I also believe I have the correct ports open, and my externip set correctly (I think the Voxilla AMI does this automatically, since it's in the cloud). I'm a bit lost. I'd be happy to post whatever configuration files that might help, provided you tell me where they are on the filesystem. But like I said before, this is effectively a vanilla install of Voxilla's own FreePBX AMI. I'd appreciate any help or guidance here. Thanks!

• Windows Server 2003/Exchange 2007: How to setup public domain mail.foo.com to route to internal exch

  Good day, I have an internal Exchange Server 2007 and a Windows Server 2003 domain. At this point in time I have an external DNS setup (DynDNS 29.95 service) to resolve foo.com to my singular public IP address then it gets routed to external facing site. I would like to know how to setup POP on mail.foo.com and SMTP on smtp.foo.com, and more importantly, what needs to be setup in Exchange server to allow for this to happen. My end state is to send email through smtp.foo.com and receive mail on mail.foo.com. As of now, when I create a user within Exchange the default email address is [email protected], and I would like it to be [email protected]. Thank you and I appreciate the help as I am a .NET developer trying to do sys admin work, and it is MUCH harder than I have ever imagined, my hat is off to all sys admins and IT pros.

• Intel hybrid graphics stuck in power save mode

  I have an Asus UL30V with Intel hybrid graphics. When I bought it it used to switch to turn of the better graphics card to save power and run on a more power effecient one. When I connected the laptop to a power source again I could go to the intel graphics icon on the task bar and click on "switch to enhanced performance mode" or something similar. But like 2-3 months ago it suddenly vanished. I cannot switch modes anymore, it's gotten stuck in power save mode. I can change the windows power setting but that doesn't enable the better graphics card :( What should I do? I've tried restarting the computer and that does not work. I really hope I don't have to reinstall the drivers! It seems like other people have had the same issue: http://en.community.dell.com/support-forums/laptop/f/3518/p/19422695/19994601.aspx , he hasn't even got the same computer as me. I have windows 7 Home Premium x64 Any ideas?

• Google Chrome and kerberos authentication against Apache

  I've managed to get kerberos authentication to work now with Apache and Likewise Open but so far, Google Chrome doesn't seem to play fair. Unless I start it with chrome.exe --auth-server-whitelist="*company.com" it does only pop-up a login window but will not accept any credentials at all. As far as I know, the --auth-server-whitelist option should only be used when trying to get Single-Sign-On (SSO) to work, but if you are fine with a log-in window it should work directly out of the box, but so far it doesn't. • Setting Up Local Repository with TortoiseSVN in Windows

  I'm trying to set up a local repository so that all commitments are copied to the local destination, not a remote server. I followed this tutorial. What I did. Created a folder named "SVN_Repo" under C:\Documents and Settings[user-name]\My Documents\ Right clicked on the folder and chose TortoiseSVN -> Create repository here Clicked OK in the pop up dialog asking whether to create a directory structure. Created a folder named Repos for the local destination, under E:\ Right clicked on the SVN_Repo folder and chose SVN Checkout... Typed file:///E:\repos in the URL of repository field and clicked the OK button. What I got: Checkout from file:///E:/repos, revision HEAD, Fully recursive, Externals included Unable to connect to a repository at URL 'file:///E:/repos' Unable to open an ra_local session to URL Unable to open repository 'file:///E:/repos' I must be doing something wrong. Could somebody point it out? Thanks.

• Getting BootMgr not found errors repeatedly on Win7 x64

  So here is the basic configuration of the box: Primary RAID 1 (Mirror, Bootable): 2x 300GB WD SATA drives AMD Phenom Quad Core x64 @2.2 ASUS M3N78 Pro Board 4GB RAM Win 7 Ultimate Additionally, this box is a Host OS for several CentOS Boxes via VirtualBox. The box runs like a champ but, for whatever reason, everytime I restart the machine I get a BootMgr not found error when the box tries to boot. I pop in my Win DVD, select 'Repair Windows' then 'Fix Start Up Problems' and everything works fine...once. When I restart the box again I have to go back through this process. Any ideas on what is going on?

• Why is Firefox so slow and heavy?

  For some reason, when I go to links the pages seem slow and heavy. It also has a lot of lag spikes between page loads. Basically it seems to freeze then load it all at once fast. I'm currently using Firefox 25. But when I use the same Chrome version, it seems to be very fast and smooth page loading. The CPU it takes on average is about 400,000k. • Can I make the shift+right-click the default right-click action on tasks in the task menu?

  When I right click on a running task in my start menu I usually get 3 options: Launch a new copy of this - I don't use this Pin this program to the taskbar - I don't use this Close window - I use this. Lots. So much so that in Windows XP I used to right click and press 'c'. Which I can no longer do because while it hilights the close MenuItem, it doesn't actually invoke it. If I shift+right-click on the task, I get the old menu upon which I can just hit C. This old menu is also generally much more useful as it has many more options I use considerably more frequently. Is there a way I can make this menu pop up as the default right-click menu? This is also proving to be a real pain to google. As I'm always up for improving my goo-fu, if you do google a fix to this problem I would appreciate it if you could share the keywords/phrases used.

• Outlook 2010 - Downloads same messages multiple times when opening

  I run multiple POP mailboxes, and have the 'Leave copy of messages on server' set for 20 days. I have been working like this for several years. However, I have just this week upgraded to Outlook 2010, and for some reason a couple of the mailboxes are downloading all the messages again, each time I open outlook. I have gone through all the settings but I can't see anything obvious, and apart from the upgrade to 2010, I havent touched any settings (2010 imported everything from 2007). I use webmail when away from my PC, hence why I leave a copy of emails on the server. Any ideas? It only downloads when Outlook first opens, thankfully not every time I do a send/receive.

  I've been using googlecl successfully to add events to my calendar. Things like: google calendar add "call Paul tomorrow at 8:30am" work great, and add the appropriate event t the right time. But no reminder is added for the event. I tried: google calendar add "call Paul tomorrow at 8:30am reminder 10 minutes" and other combinations. It just ends up adding the "reminder" instruction to the event description. What's the syntax I should use to add a, let's say, 10 minutes pop-up reminder? Thanks

• Key modifiers affect remote VNC sessions in OS X

  I have two concurrent users of my MacBook: one local (with local peripherals) and one remote (connecting via VNC to a user kept logged in with fast user switching). As described here http://macosx.com/forums/howto-faqs/52547-howto-simultaneous-user-environments-via-vnc.html That's working fine, except that when I hit modifier keys (e.g. shift, option, ...), I also affect the remote user. For example, if I hold down shift, the remote user's key strokes are capitalised, and if I hold down option, they get strange glyphs instead of the normal letters. Does anyone have any idea what could be causing this, or how to fix it?

• Pre-set OS X dock icon positions for non-permanent apps?

  Is it possible to have OS X always place certain app icons in specific places (eg. position "two") in the dock, when they're not permanently docked apps? At the moment every non-permanent app is added to the end (far right), but, for example, if I have my mail and todo list apps open, I want them to pop up in positions one and two. I know this can easily be achieved by permanently docking icons, I'm specifically looking for a solution for non-permanent apps. I suspect OS X has no built in facility for this, perhaps there's a 3rd party app or script/command line trick?

• How to set up Pegasus Mail in non-admin account?

  I'm using Pegasus Mail for my mail client, and on my old computer (XP Pro), I could log in as the guest or admin account and it would still work. I recently got a new computer, with XP Pro, and I've set the mail client to work fine when I log in to the admin account, but when I log into the guest account, it always wants the SMTP, POP, and other connection information. How do I get it to remember that? I tried making an admin account, setting it up, and then downgrading that account, but that didn't work either. Does anyone even use PMail?
