• Moving a VM from MS Virtual Server R2 to VirtualBox

  I have a Windows 2000 Professional VM happily running under MS Virtual Server R2 on WindowsXP. I need to move it to a different PC and the only one available is a Mac with VirtualBox on it. Theoretically, VirtualBox accepts .VHD files out of the box, but my attempts to run my VHD on VirtualBox resulted in failure. The Guest OS just keeps rebooting. I've attempted to get help on the VirtualBox forums, and they said that the VM image must first be prepped for the move, but could not give me any specifics. Anyone here know what is specifically involved in moving a Win2k .VHD to VirtualBox on the Mac?

• Accessing multiple local HD's or RAID with ESXi 4.0

  How to I get additional HD's to be recognized and used by ESXi 4.0. When I purchased my system I had two 2TB HD's, but when I installed ESXi it only recognized one of them. I'm happy to get whatever number of drives that I need (I have a four bay SATA in my Dell T310). What are some options? RAID? If so, is it supported. I guess I would need hardware instead of software since ESXi is so small. The VMWare forums (where I've lived for the last two days) are a charlie foxtrot of outdated and conflicting info. I want to utilize my T310, with 32 GB RAM, 2.8GHz quad core to run many lab Windows VM's. I don't need production level availability but I do want decent performance, even though it's in a lab environment. A huge thanks to Jim B., Zypher, Helvick, and Jeff Hengesbach who posted answers to my earlier predecessor question on why ESXi was so sluggish.

• Ubuntu 10.04: unable to login after fresh install

  Hello All, I,ve just installed a fresh copy of Ubunutu 10.04, downloaded a couple of days ago. The installation seemed to go fine. However I can't log in: the login screen just seems to reset and asks me for my password again. It's not an authentication / incorrect password issue. If I stick in a wrong password, I get "Authentication failure". I've googled around, others report the same issue on the Ubuntu forums, but there doesn't seem to be a fix. Does anyone know of a work around or what the problem is? Have 9.10, I might end up just installing that instead. THanks

• Is SYN flooding still a threat?

  Well recently I've been reading about different Denial of Service methods. One method that kind of stuck out was SYN flooding. I'm a member of some not-so-nice forums, and someone was selling a python script that would DoS a server using SYN packets with a spoofed IP address. However, if you sent a SYN packet to a server, with a spoofed IP address, the target server would return the SYN/ACK packet to the host that was spoofed. In which case, wouldn't the spoofed host return an RST packet, thus negating the 75 second long-wait, and ultimately failing in its attempt to DoS the server?

• PDF printer which correctly embeds EPS into PDF

  I need to convert to PDF a Word document containing embedded vector EPS images (by printing to PDF printer - I use Word 2003). Several years ago I tested some of commercial and free PDF printers and found none, with except to Acrobat Distiller, which embeds in the generated PDF file real PostScript content of the EPS image instead of the preview showed by Word. Has the situation changed from that time? Do you know any free or commercial PDF printer which handles embedded EPS correctly? • DNS Resolution doesn't work after uninstalling Cisco VPN & Deterministic Network Enhancer in Win 7

  I just upgraded my home PC to Windows 7 Ultimate 32 bit. After trying various methods to get the Cisco VPN client to work, I gave up and decided to just run it in XP mode. The last steps I tried were in this article ( http://social.technet.microsoft.com/Forums/en-US/w7itproappcompat/thread/d880dfe5-7f44-4955-8620-2a9355d8ea8b/ ) After that, I uninstalled the Cisco client and rebooted. I uninstalled the Deterministic Network Enhancer and rebooted again. Both uninstalled successfully, but now I'm not able to resolve any DNS. The only way I can resolve DNS is to reinstall the DNE, reboot, and uninstall the DNE. Then I am able to resolve DNS lookups until I reboot again. Once it's rebooted, no more DNS. Any ideas?

  I have a Postfix server and using it with Outlook (POP/SMTP). I have different sender addresses for an account. Now I want to configure a relay for a specific sender address. For example I have postfix for my main domain domain1.com. Now I have a sender address that is domain2.com. For that sender address I want that postfix to relay mail to a second SMTP server. I think that should be possible without problems. But the problem is that I have to create a SSH tunnel to the second server to connect to the SMTP server. But I cant use a persistent SSH connection so I want to know if it is possible that postfix executes some script before relaying the mail to the second SMTP server. I already found some information for executing a script when incomming emails but I only want to establish the SSH tunnel before postfix relays the mail to the second SMTP server.

  Hello, I have serveral emails in a few domains (email@domain1, email@domain2, email@domain3). Currently they are on an owned email server and I am collecting emails via IMAP protocol (i would not like to use POP..) in Thunderbird. I have a few partners and I want to allow them to access the same email address. Here is what I desired: All users can open All the inboxes via IMAP @ Thunderbird (with proper configuration) at the same time, there are a webmail system, every user can login their account (userA, userB, userC), and they will see all inboxes (email@domain1, email@domain2, email@domain3) Would you recommend any suite that fits my needs? Either (a system to be installed on my server) or (a remote service where I need to config MX records) will do. Thank you.

• Logging another person off in Windows 7 using Task Manager

  Under WinXP, I could use Task Manager's Users tab to log off my wife's account which she always leaves logged in so I don't have to log in to her account and log it out. It's an older machine so I used that trick to free up every resource I could which might potentially slow down the game I'm playing at the time. I recently upgraded the machine to Win7 and when I try the same trick, I get an access denied popup. My logged in account does have Admin rights, so is it as simple as runing Task Manager "as an Administrator" in order to allow this? If so, how can I pull up Task Manager (other than the standard CTRL-ALT-DELETE) to have it pop up with Admin rights in order to log her account off in this manner?

• increase performance of virtual machines on the 27" imac

  I'm using a 27" iMac (i7, 8GB RAM) at work and normally run two or three virtual machines at the same time, which hurts the performance of each virtual machine. I've learned on these forums the best way to increase virtual machine performance (aside from RAM) is to have them running on a separate hard drive from the one the OS is on. Of course with the iMac you can only have one hard drive and not even an SAS or solid state drive (well you could probably take it apart and put one in yourself but I wouldn't be permitted to do that). That being said, do you think it would help to run one or more virtual machines from a firewire external drive (or a usb 2.0)? Thanks for your input!

  I have WebLogic 11g installed on my machine under /srv/wls, and I start Node manager on it with /srv/wls/wlserver_10.3/server/bin/startNodeManager.sh. I create my domain with config.sh, and then I want to start the Admin Server of that domain with Node Manager. So I open a WLST session and do the following: > nmConnect(...) > nmStart('AdminServer') But when I then visit localhost:7001/console, and login, the screen on the browser remains blank and the server logs tell me the server has run out of PermGen space. I don't encounter this problem when starting the Admin Server through the shell script under $DOMAIN/startWebLogic.sh. Then it works fine. Any idea what I am doing wrong? I couldn't find anything in Google nor on the Oracle forums...

  I wonder if Windows 7 or Vista's Snipping Tool can capture a screen 10 seconds later, and capture the mouse pointer as well? The thing is that sometimes we need to capture the thing that "pops up" when the mouse is over it, so in that case, Snippling tool won't seem to work (because the mouse pointer is activating the Snipping tool instead of pointing at the thing to get the "pop up" item). In this case, the key PrtScn on the keyboard can capture the screen to the clipboard, except it won't capture the mouse pointer, which is sometimes wanted... Is there a way to do that, and possibly say, "capture the screen 10 seconds later, when I am all ready?" thanks.

• Darik's Boot And Nuke - ERROR /dev/sda

  I'm trying to wipe the drive of an old company computer with DBAN so I can install Redhat Enterprise and learn Linux (it's a Dell Inspiron 1210, if that matters). I burnt DBAN to a CD and boot from that CD (running on an external USB CD drive). Whenever I try to run the utility--whether it's Autonuke, or any of manual wiping methods-- it spits on the errors: ERROR /dev/sdb ERROR /dev/sda From what I've read on some other forums, there are some issues with other drives or removable media interfering however I've disabled all other drives in bios, leaving just CD/DVD and the Hard Disk but still no luck. Any advice on how I can reconcile these errors and wipe the disk?

• Uninstall or Disable Dell Wave

  The image we put on our company laptops includes the Dell Wave interface for Biometric log in. The Wave UI increases boot time by about 5 minutes (because it loads the fingerprint database(a feature I don't use)), so I'm trying to uninstall it, but with little success. There is no line-item in the Add/Remove Programs menu to formally delete it, nor is there a Service I can stop/remove to disable the Wave UI. I've tried looking online, but all I find instead are hits for Google Wave and virus-removal forums with HyjackThis dumps that include Dell Wave records. Any ideas? Edit: Removal isn't entirely necessary. Disabling the Wave UI is good enough.

• MacBook Refuses to Boot

  I have a MacBook that has unfortunately died on me. I randomly got a pop up message that said I needed to restart my computer, and once I did, I was greeted with the blinking folder question mark start up screen. I've tried everything, including running Disk Utility repair and reformatting the hard drive and reinstalling OS X. All of my data is backed up and safe, I just need my computer to start again. Before I go off and buy a new hard drive, I wanted to see if there is anything I might have forgotten.

• Mozilla Thunderbird new emails indication colour

  I've recently upgraded Mozilla Thunderbird to v3 on Winodws XP. In v2 I think when new (Pop 3) emails were downloaded, there were a little star icon next to my local folders where it's filtered to as to indicate new emails. In v3, it seems they've changed it to use different colour to highlight the folder instead. Whereas folders with existing unread emails are highlighted in bold black, folders with new unread emails are highlighted in this light grey greenish colour that's really hard to see. Can anyone please tell me how to modify the colour? I'm guessing it's either some lines in a userChrome.css file, or modifying a field in the config editor. Thanks. :)

  I'll tell you in advance that I'm newbie in the topic. I have a Win8 (Home) machine with Hyper-V installed behind a router. The router has a public IP and a domain attached. I have another Win8 (Work) machine also installed Hyper-V. I want to access to my home Hyper-V via Hyper-V Manager so I can manage my virtual machines from work. I found this article but I don't know if it's applicable to me. I thought that a simple port forwarding should work and I only need to do is grant the Work HV manager my domain and the port I choose and if it's pop a login form I only need to fill the user data of my Home computer? How can I solve this? My thoughts revolve around: - Port forwarding - set domain+port and set my home user - Set up a VPN and use the local ip address of my home computer (it looks like a little cumbersome and my router only support PPTP) I'm open to any other solution too. • How do I backup my Ubuntu 9.10 system and then restore it to a new machine with different hardware?

  I have a nicely configured Ubuntu 9.10 machine, with crossover linux (from Codeweavers) installed. I have the Nvidia drivers installed. Everything is just as I want it. Now I want to move to a new machine with different hardware: different sized hard drive, different size RAM, different video card, etc. I tried the technique suggested on Ubuntu forums, "Howto: Backup and restore your system!". The results: New system complains about swap not being found New system complains about not finding Nvidia hardware, and I can't open the System-Administration-Hardware Drivers application (i.e., /usr/bin/jockey-gtk) to fix the problem. As result of nvidia, X-Windows is throwing errors, and the on screen process for fixing X-Windows isn't working. How do I restore a backup of my old system, including my Crossover Linux installation, to a new machine with different hardware installed?

• firefox addons and their silly news tabs

  Something like 30% of the addons I have in firefox update every other week and feel the need to pop open a tab about how awesome they are and all the cool things they changed. I just don't care at all and I'm very annoyed by these news tabs. When firefox opens, I want to see my home page. I've been looking for an addon to disable or kill them before I even have to look at them. Rather like addblock-for-addons. Short of finding a plugin that disables them, I'm seeking information about common interfaces so I can try to figure it out on my own. I'm wondering if I could do it in greasemonkey somehow. For example, is there something common about the url for the tabs?

• How to reuse backup on Time Machine on Snow Leopard after a logic board change, after choosing wrong

  After my logic board was replaced, I connected my laptop back to my network, and Time Machine gave me a popup, as shown on this thread: http://superuser.com/questions/78068/recycle-time-machine-for-new-machine/78264#78264 I misread the question and clicked on "Create New Backup" when I should have clicked on "Reuse Backup" to connect to my old backup file. How can I trigger that popup again? Turning Time Machine on and off does not work, and the instructions on forums to fix via terminal doesn't work because snow leopard is missing the fsaclctl command (and I'm also not familiar with terminal commands.) • Lightning fast forum based around metadata / tags? [closed]

  I wonder if anything like this exists. I'd like to add a forum to my site, but instead of the usual forum/subforum/sub-subforum structure, I'd like to use a metadata/tag approach where everything exists as a single directory, and where there's a search field at the top which instantly (<0.5 sec) filters the threads to a particular keyword or keywords. Also, as the admin, I would be able to add highly visible buttons at the top, which can be clicked on for the main categories I choose for the forum (nevertheless, users can also add tags to their own threads outside of these default main tags I supply if they wish). This approach, if done properly, is more powerful, efficient, maintenance free, scalable and friendly than a standard forum, so I was hoping someone had the same idea and made something out of it. It couldn't be that hard. I'd want the speed to be up to (or near) the standard of this: http://forum.dlang.org/ Other forums (e.g.: phpBB, shudder) are orders of magnitude worse than that in terms of latency (posting or browsing), and I think that is wrong, even in principle ;)

• Host a subdomain from an IIS7 server on another server

  I am running a network with two server, one running SBS 2008 which hosts a majority of the network services (DNS, DHCP, Exchange, IIS, DC, AD...), including the primary webpage at mydomain.com. The other server is a linux box running an apache web server. I'm trying to set the apache server to host the site site2.mydomain.com. I have changed the DNS settings on the first server so that site2.mydomain.com can be accessed from the internal network, but I cannot access site2.mydomain.com from the internet. I have tried using server farms and application request routing cache, as described on this page, http://forums.iis.net/t/1156458.aspx, but I still can't access site2.mydomain.com from the internet. I don't have much experience with web servers, I usually just administer local networks, so I'm not sure if I'm going about this the right way. Any help or suggestions would be much appreciated.

• can't add sharepoint users from trusted domain

  I have a very strange problem with our Sharepoint 2007 implementation. I went in today to grant access to a user and was greeted with "The user does not exist or is not unique." Let me start off by saying that this user is not on our domain we have a 2 way trust connecting to one of our subsidiaries. I can see the users in the people pick but can't add them into Sharepoint. This problem flared up after we had some trust issues last two days ago. So I must ask has anyone came across this error and if so what steps did you take to resolve it? • Why do all my browsers default to the "Impact" font?

  I've been struggling with a font issue which I hope you can help resolve. A few weeks ago I started seeing "Impact" as the default font on lots of webpages, rendering much of the content illegible. I think this issue began after I installed other fonts, but I'm not sure. The issue occurs on Chrome, IE and Firefox which suggests it is a Windows issue. By the time I tried to revert the changes via System Restore, it was too late. I tried to reset the default font but Windows does not seem to respond to that. When I click "Restore to default font settings" the button greys out but nothing else happens. No dialog box and no change in the issue. I've tried deleting the fonts in my font folder and re-installing them (from backup) but that did not work either. • verisign certificate into jboss server SSL
