  • Restful Java based web services in json + html5 and javascript no templates (jsp/jsf/freemarker) aka fat/thick client

    I have this idea of building a website which service JSON data through restful services framework. And will not use any template engines like jsp/jsf/freemarker. Just pure html5 and Javascript libs. What do you think of the pros and cons of such design ? Just for elaboration and brain storming a friend of mine argued with the following concerns: sounds like gwt this way you won't have any control over you service api for example say you wanna charge the user per request how will you handle it? how will you control your design and themes? what about the 1st request the browser make? not easy with this all of the user's requests will come with "Accept" header "application/json" how will you separate browser from abuser? this way all of your public apis will be used by third party apps abusively and you won't be able to lock it since you won't be able to block the normal user browser We won't use compiled html anyway but may be something like freemarker and in that case you won't expose any of your json resources to the unauthorized user but you will expose all the html since any browser can access them all the well known 1st class services do this can you send me links to what you've read? keep in mind the DOM based XSS it will be a nightmare ofc, if what you say is applicable.

I'm comfortable with all syntax and writing programs and using API's and doing mashups, i can do.......... but once a friend asked help on coding contest, i was in dilemma and frustration? It was simple and complex, i could not write code for those, so got scared? Is logical ability,complex mathematics, puzzles required for a developer point of view? please help and suggest methods to achieve things......

    Recently a colleague remarked that if he got a List of some type out of the ASP.NET Cache, and changed an item, the Cache item would also change.That is correct.   • Is there a Design Pattern for preventing dangling references?

    I was thinking about a design for custom handles. The thought is to prevent clients from copying around large objects. Now a regular handle class would probably suffice for that, but it doesn't solve the "dangling reference problem"; If a client has multiple handles of the same object and deletes the object via one of them, all the others would be invalid, but not know it, so the client could write or read parts of the memory he shouldn't have access to. Is there a design pattern to prevent this from happening? Two ideas: An observer-like pattern where the destructor of an object would notify all handles. "Handle handles" (does such a thing even exist?). All the handles don't really point to the object, but to another handle. When the object gets destroyed, this "master-handle" invalidates itself and therefore all that point to it.

  • "PHP: Good Parts"-ish book / reference

    Before I had my first proper contact with Javascript I read an excellent book "Javascript: The Good Parts" by Douglas Crockford. I was hoping for something similar in case of PHP. My first thought was this book: "PHP: The Good Parts" from O'Reilly However after I read the reviews it seems it totally misses the point. I am looking for a resource that would: concentrate on known shortcommings of PHP, give concrete examples, be as exhaustive as possible I already see that things can go wrong. If you want to close this question: Please consider this, I looked through SO, and Programmers for materials. I obviously found this question: http://stackoverflow.com/questions/90924/what-is-the-best-php-programming-book It's general, mine is specific. Moreover I'm reading the top recommendation "PHP Objects, Patterns, and Practice" right now. I find it insufficient -- it doesn't address the bad practices as much as I would like it to. tl;dr My question is NOT a general PHP book request.

  • Designing web-based plugin systems correctly so they don't waste as many resources?

    Many CMS systems which rely on third parties for much of their code often build "plugin" or "hooks" systems to make it easy for developers to modify the codebase's actions without editing the core files. This usually means an Observer or Event design pattern. However, when you look at systems like wordpress you see that on every page they load some kind of bootstrap file from each of the plugin's folders to see if that plugin will need to run that request. Its this poor design that causes systems like wordpress to spend many extra MB's of memory loading and parsing unneeded items each page. Are there alternative ways to do this? I'm looking for ideas in building my own. For example, Is there a way to load all this once and then cache the results so that your system knows how to lazy-load plugins? In other words, the system loads a configuration file that specifies all the events that plugin wishes to tie into and then saves it for future requests? If that also performs poorly, then perhaps there is a special file-structure that could be used to make educated guesses about when certain plugins are unneeded to fullfil the request. Any ideas?     There might be a situation where one of my clients won't pay for the web site that I've made. So I am wondering if it is possible to sell a web site? It is an internet shop, so there is no content that comes with it, but the source code is fully available, and it has a decent design. I've seen people trying to sell web site templates, and I've seen people who try to sell already running web sites, and there are plenty of commercial web site engines out there. But what about raw empty web sites, is there a market for them?

  • Is there a way to add Google Docs-like comments to any web page?

    You know the comments on Google Docs word processing documents? And how it creates a little discussion over in the right-hand margin? I love it. Great for collaboration. I want to free it from Google Docs so I can use it with clients to discuss mock-ups or scaffolded websites. Searching Google for "add comments [or discussions] to any website" only gets you results for adding blog-like comments (Disqus, JS-Kit, etc.) Anyone know of a solution for what I'm after here?

  • Deploying a very simple application

    I have a very simple working console application written in C++ linked with a light static library. It is just for testing purposes. Now that the coding part is done, I would like to know the process of actually deploying the program. I wrote a very basic CMakeLists.txt that create makefiles or VS projects to build the sources. I also have a program that calls the static library in order to make some google tests. To me, the distribution of this application goes like this : to developpers : the src directory with the CMakeLists.txt file (multi-platform distribution) with a README.txt and an INSTALL.txt to users : the executable and a README.txt git repo : everything mentionned above plus the sources for testing and the gtest external lib A this point : considering the complexity of my application, am I doing it right ? Is there any reference that would formalize this deployment process so I can get better and go further ? Say I would like to add dynamic libraries that can be updated, external libraries like boost : how should I package this to deploy it in a professionnal way ?

    Background: Developer with loads of experience in desktop computing. C++, Java etc Wants to dabble in: Living social. Yeah, you guessed it right -- website development. Perhaps will need to learn PHP or Javascript, SOAP, XML etc. Positives: Knows nothing about ASP or jQuery -- clean slate really. What's that 1 piece of advice that you'd give here? Could be anything: choice of technology, frameworks, potential pitfall and portability issues etc.

  • Execute a Managed bean from a JSF view in WEB-INF folder

    We are initiating in Spring + Primefaces development and the first problem we have encountered is about storing the xhtml pages into the WEB-INF folder. When we use a faces form in a view located inside the WEB-INF folder, then the commandButton does not execute the managed bean method. Our bean : In fact we think the problem is that with JSF , the pages are rendered using a link to the same page as the action of the form, so if the page is located in WEB-INF it is not public accessible. We know that having all our xhtml views in the web folder instead of WEB-INF actually solves the issue, but we would like to store that pages into WEB-INF. Thank you.

  • What Would You Consider Best Practice Workflow Tools For Web Application (PHP) Development?

    I'm really hoping somebody with more experience can edit the question as per my examples of answers: • using version control • test driven development • debugging code (xdebug for php) • use of UML diagrams • use of OOP for maintainable, reusable code • use of frameworks (like Zend Framework for php) for rapid application development Anything else or an elaboration of what I mentioned above? Basically, I'm in the middle of forming a team of developers (I'm a developer myself) and I'd like some advice on how professional programmers/designers etc should work together and what standards/paradigms they should use. Also, if anybody has any books or links on the subject I'd welcome that!     I have a situation where a custom class is a property of another class. What i need to be able to do, if it is possible at all, is obtain a reverse to the "parent" class (ie the the class that holds the current class as a property). For Instance: Public Class Class1 ... public readonly property Prop11 as Class2 public property Prop12 as String ... End Class Public Class Class2 ... private _par as Class1 private _var21 as string ... Public Sub New(...) me._par = ???? ... End Sub public readonly property Prop21 as string Get return me._par.Prop12 & me._var21 End Get End Property ... End Class Ultimately, i am trying to access other properties within Class1 from Class2 as they do have substance for information from within Class2. There are several other classes within Class1 that provide descriptive information to other classes contained within it as properties but the information is not extensible to all of the classes through Inheritance, as Class1 is being used as a resource bin for the property classes and the application itself. Diagram, lazy design ;): Application <- Class1.Prop12 Application <- Class1.Prop11.Prop21 Question: Is it possible to get a recursion through this design setup?

  • Should I Learn C/C++ Even If I Just Want To Do Web Programming?

    My goal is to be able to create online apps and dynamic, database driven websites. For instance, if in the future I get the idea for the next Digg or Facebook, I want to be able to code it myself. To arrive there I think I have basically two paths: Path 1 Start at a basic level, learning C, then C++ for OOP, then algorithms and data structures, with the goal of getting a solid grasp of computer programming. Only then move to PHP/MySQL/HTTP and start working on practical programming projects. Path 2 Start directly with PHP/MySQL/HTTP and getting my hands dirty with practical projects right away. What would you guys recommend?

  • Putting coworkers as references in CV [closed]

    My friend is working in one organisation for some time and wants to change a job. Problem is that motivation is money related (management is refusing to raise salary without any explanation despite 1) they don't have any questions nor problems related to his work 2) they promised raise long ago) and they won't find anyone to replace him. So they not just won't recommend him, but surely will say he is bad specialist and person as he leaves. Don't put that work in CV is not an option, so he thinks the possible solution is to reference his co-workers and teammates. He didn't work for them as employee, but he worked with them, so their (100% positive) feedback looks like fair compensation of what management will say. Is that correct? Looking for interviewers/employers opinion.

    Does anyone know of a website that will take a full screen shot of another website and let users write notes over it then send that annotated photo by email or private link? Basically looking for quicker way to write notes on a site other than taking a screen shot my self and putting it into photoshop.   • Best strategy to discover a web service in a local network?

    I am currently doing some research for a project. The setup is simple, I have a computer running a service in my home network and any device connected to that same network should be able to discover the service automatically and use it. I have no specific technology requirement whether it is on the server or client side. The client knows about the service definition. Other than that I have no idea what strategy to use, what technology to look at or whether I should go for a SOAP or a HTTP based service. I think going HTTP with REST API is the best for targeting all devices but I am opened to any suggestions. Thanks.
