A: Internally, XSL-T processor uses double precession.  Therefore the upper limit and precision will be same as double (IEEE 754 double-precision binary floating-point format, binary64). Approximately 16 significant decimal digits, max is 1.7976931348623157 x 10308 . So, now you know :)

• Saving files with libgdx

  Writing my game in libgdx, i arrived at the point when i need to save the player stats and the info of the levels, but in libgdx its not allowed to write the file inside folder of the application, only external (in the sd) is allowed, well, the point is that i want that my new file cat be seen by anyone, or if they see it how can i pass it to a binary file, so no one can see it. I just want to hide the file :P

• Should I expect to know a lot about every language I put on my resume as a college student?

  If I am asked to program an algorithm, say binary search, in languages other than Java during an interview, I will have a hard time trying to remember the syntax. Is it okay to tell my interviewer that I can only code this in Java, because I have worked with other languages before but have not used them for a while? If not, what suggestions do you have (i.e. what languages and parts of those languages among these should I pick up the syntax of before my interview)?

• Where did "Open with" (user defined command) go?

  I'm now using Ubuntu 12.04. In earlier versions you could associate a filetype with a specific command (e.g. self-compiled binary) by selecting "Open with" in the file's properties and select the command by providing the file path manually if it wasn't already in the list of applications. Is this possibility gone? The only way I found now is to create .desktop files and edit the mimetypes via an text editor.

• Macbook OSX applications crashing on startup

  Closed my computer last night, went home. Opened it and it had restarted. Now when I open a couple programs such as Adobe Fireworks or Appcelerator Titanium they throw up a nasty error like below. Other programs (Chrome, Firefox, Textmate, Versions) works fine. Any thoughts on this? I haven't owned my Macbook long so I'm not even aware of the right tools or places to look to track this down. Any help would be most appreciated. It's making it hard to get my work done :] If it helps at all both those programs were probably open when it restarted. From the look of it I'm not sure if it's a permissions error or something? I completely re-installed on of the applications Titanium. Didn't seem to help. • MacBook OS X applications crashing on startup

  Closed my computer last night, went home. Opened it and it had restarted. Now when I open a couple programs such as Adobe Fireworks or Appcelerator Titanium they throw up a nasty error like below. Other programs (Chrome, Firefox, Textmate, Versions) work fine. Any thoughts on this? I haven't owned my MacBook long so I'm not even aware of the right tools or places to look to track this down. Any help would be most appreciated. It's making it hard to get my work done :] If it helps at all both those programs were probably open when it restarted. From the look of it I'm not sure if it's a permissions error or something? I completely re-installed one of the applications (Appcelerator Titanium). Didn't seem to help. • JMX Based Monitoring - Part Three - Web App Server Monitoring

  In the last blog entry I showed a technique for integrating a JMX console with Oracle WebLogic which is a standard feature of Oracle WebLogic 11g. Customers on other Web Application servers and other versions of Oracle WebLogic can refer to the documentation provided with the server to do a similar thing. In this blog entry I am going to discuss a new feature that is only present in Oracle Utilities Application Framework 4 and above that allows JMX to be used for management and monitoring the Oracle Utilities Web Applications. In this case JMX can be used to perform monitoring as well as provide the management of the cache. In Oracle Utilities Application Framework you can enable Web Application Server JMX monitoring that is unique to the framework by specifying a JMX port number in RMI Port number for JMX Web setting and initial credentials in the JMX Enablement System User ID and JMX Enablement System Password configuration options. These options are available using the configureEnv[.sh] -a utility. Once this is information is supplied a number of configuration files are built (by the initialSetup[.sh] utility) to configure the facility: spl.properties - contains the JMX URL, the security configuration and the mbeans that are enabled. For example, on my demonstration machine: spl.runtime.management.rmi.port=6740 spl.runtime.management.connector.url.default=service:jmx:rmi:///jndi/rmi://localhost:6740/oracle/ouaf/webAppConnector jmx.remote.x.password.file=scripts/ouaf.jmx.password.file jmx.remote.x.access.file=scripts/ouaf.jmx.access.file ouaf.jmx.com.splwg.base.support.management.mbean.JVMInfo=enabled ouaf.jmx.com.splwg.base.web.mbeans.FlushBean=enabled ouaf.jmx.* files - contain the userid and password. The default setup uses the JMX default security configuration. You can use additional security features by altering the spl.properties file manually or using a custom template. For more security options see the JMX Site. Once it has been configured and the changes reflected in the product using the initialSetup[.sh] utility the JMX facility can be used. For illustrative purposes, I will use jconsole but any JSR160 complaint browser or client can be used (with the appropriate configuration). Once you start jconsole (ensure that splenviron[.sh] is executed prior to execution to set the environment variables or for remote connection, ensure java is in your path and jconsole.jar in your classpath) you specify the URL in the spl.management.connnector.url.default entry and the credentials you specified in the jmx.remote.x.* files. Remember these are encrypted by default so if you try and view the file you may be able to decipher it visually. For example: There are three Mbeans available to you: flushBean - This is a JMX replacement for the jsp versions of the flush utilities provided in previous releases of the Oracle Utilities Application Framework. You can manage the cache using the provided operations from JMX. The jsp versions of the flush utilities are still provided, for backward compatibility, but now are authorization controlled. JVMInfo - This is a JMX replacement for the jsp version of the JVMInfo screen used by support to get a handle on JVM information. This information is environmental not operational and is used for support purposes. The jsp versions of the JVMInfo utilities are still provided, for backward compatibility, but now is also authorization controlled. JVMSystem - This is an implementation of the Java system MXBeans for use in monitoring. We provide our own implementation of the base Mbeans to save on creating another JMX configuration for internal monitoring and to provide a consistent interface across platforms for the MXBeans. This Mbean is disabled by default and can be enabled using the enableJVMSystemBeans operation. This Mbean allows for the monitoring of the ClassLoading, Memory, OperatingSystem, Runtime and the Thread MX beans. The Web Application Server JMX monitoring allows greater visibility for monitoring and management of the Oracle Utilities Application Framework application from jconsole or any JSR160 compliant JMX browser or JMX console.

  Java SE 8 update 20 is a new feature release designed to provide desktop administrators with better control of their managed systems. The release notes for 8u20 are available from the public JDK release notes page. This release is not a Critical Patch Update (CPU). I would like to call attention to two noteworthy features of Oracle Java SE Advanced, the commercially supported version of Java SE for enterprises that require both support and specialized tools. The new Advanced Management Console provides a way to monitor and understand client systems at scale. It allows organizations to track usage and more easily create and manage client configuration like Deployment Rule Sets (DRS). DRS can control execution of tracked applications as well as specify compatibility of which application should use which Java SE installation. The new MSI Installer integrates into various desktop management tools, making it easier to customize and roll out different Java SE versions. Advanced Management Console The Advanced Management Console is part of Java SE Advanced designed for desktop administrators, whose users need to run many different Java applications. It provides usage tracking for those Applet & Web Start applications to help identify them for guided DRS creation. DRS can then be verified against the tracked data, to ensure that end-users can run their application against the appropriate Java version with no prompts. Usage tracking also has a different definition for Java SE than it does for most software applications. Unlike most applications where usage can be determined by a simple run-count, Java is a platform used for launching other applications. This means that usage tracking must answer both "how often is this Java SE version used" and "what applications are launched by it." Usage Tracking One piece of Java SE Advanced is a centralized usage tracker. Simply placing a properties file on the client informs systems to report information to this usage tracker, so that the desktop administrator can better understand usage. Information is sent via UDP to prevent any delay on the client. The usage tracking server resides at a central location on the intranet to collect information from those clients. The information is stored in a normalized database for performance, meaning that a single usage tracker can handle a large number of clients. Guided Deployment Rule Sets Deployment Rule Sets were introduced in Java 7 update 40 (September 2013) in order to help administrators control security prompts and guide compatibility. A previous post, Deployment Rule Sets by Example, explains how to configure a rule set so that most applications run against the most secure version but a specific applet may run against the Java version that was current several years ago. There are a different set of questions that can be asked by a desktop administrator in a large or distributed firm: Where are the Java RIAs that our users need? Which RIA needs which Java version? Which users need which Java versions? How do I verify these answers once I have them? The guided deployment rule set creation uses usage tracker data to identify applications both by certificate hash and location. After creating the rules, a comparison tool exists to verify them against the tracked data: If you intend to run an RIA, is it green? If something specific should be blocked, is it red? This makes user-testing easier. MSI Installer The Windows Installer format (MSI) provides a number of benefits for desktop administrators that customize or manage software at scale. Unlike the basic installer that most users obtain from Java.com or OTN, this installer is built around customization and integration with various desktop management products like SCCM. • Securing Flexfield Value Sets in EBS 12.2

  Release 12.2 includes a new feature: flexfield value set security. This new feature gives you additional options for ensuring that different administrators have non-overlapping responsibilities, which in turn provides checks and balances for sensitive activities.  Separation of Duties (SoD) is one of the key concepts of internal controls and is a requirement for many regulations including: Sarbanes-Oxley (SOX) Act Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA) European Union Data Protection Directive. Its primary intent is to put barriers in place to prevent fraud or theft by an individual acting alone. Implementing Separation of Duties requires minimizing the possibility that users could modify data across application functions where the users should not normally have access. For flexfields and report parameters in Oracle E-Business Suite, values in value sets can affect functionality such as the rollup of accounting data, job grades used at a company, and so on. Controlling access to the creation or modification of value set values can be an important piece of implementing Separation of Duties in an organization. New Flexfield Value Set Security feature Flexfield value set security allows system administrators to restrict users from viewing, adding or updating values in specific value sets. Value set security enables role-based separation of duties for key flexfields, descriptive flexfields, and report parameters. For example, you can set up value set security such that certain users can view or insert values for any value set used by the Accounting Flexfield but no other value sets, while other users can view and update values for value sets used for any flexfields in Oracle HRMS. You can also segregate access by Operating Unit as well as by role or responsibility.Value set security uses a combination of data security and role-based access control in Oracle User Management. Flexfield value set security provides a level of security that is different from the previously-existing and similarly-named features in Oracle E-Business Suite: Function security controls whether a user has access to a specific page or form, as well as what operations the user can do in that screen. Flexfield value security controls what values a user can enter into a flexfield segment or report parameter (by responsibility) during routine data entry in many transaction screens across Oracle E-Business Suite. Flexfield value set security (this feature, new in Release 12.2) controls who can view, insert, or update values for a particular value set (by flexfield, report, or value set) in the Segment Values form (FNDFFMSV). The effect of flexfield value set security is that a user of the Segment Values form will only be able to view those value sets for which the user has been granted access. Further, the user will be able to insert or update/disable values in that value set if the user has been granted privileges to do so.  Flexfield value set security affects independent, dependent, and certain table-validated value sets for flexfields and report parameters. Initial State of the Feature upon Upgrade Because this is a new security feature, it is turned on by default.  When you initially install or upgrade to Release 12.2.2, no users are allowed to view, insert or update any value set values (users may even think that their values are missing or invalid because they cannot see the values).  You must explicitly set up access for specific users by enabling appropriate grants and roles for those users.We recommend using flexfield value set security as part of a comprehensive Separation of Duties strategy. However, if you choose not to implement flexfield value set security upon upgrading to or installing Release 12.2, you can enable backwards compatibility--users can access any value sets if they have access to the Values form--after you upgrade. The feature does not affect day-to-day transactions that use flexfields.  However, you must either set up specific grants and roles or enable backwards compatibility before users can create new values or update or disable existing values.   Continuing part 2 of my Stepping outside the Visual Studio IDE, is the open-source Mono Project. Mono is a software platform designed to allow developers to easily create cross platform applications. Sponsored by Novell (http://www.novell.com/), Mono is an open source implementation of Microsoft's .NET Framework based on the ECMA standards for C# and the Common Language Runtime. A growing family of solutions and an active and enthusiastic contributing community is helping position Mono to become the leading choice for development of Linux applications. So, to clarify. You can use Mono to develop .NET applications that will run on Linux, Windows or Mac. It’s basically a IDE that has roots in Linux. Let’s first look at the compatibility: Compatibility If you already have an application written in .Net, you can scan your application with the Mono Migration Analyzer (MoMA) to determine if your application uses anything not supported by Mono. The current release version of Mono is 2.6. (Released December 2009) The easiest way to describe what Mono currently supports is: Everything in .NET 3.5 except WPF and WF, limited WCF. Mono IDE Latest Version is 2.6.4 That's it, nothing more is required except to compile and run .net code in Linux. Installation After landing on the mono project home page, you can select which platform you want to download. I typically pick the Virtual PC image since I spend all of my day using Windows 7. Go ahead and pick whatever version is best for you. The Virtual PC image comes with Suse Linux. Once the image is launch, you will see the following: I’m not going to go through each option but its best to start with “Start Here” icon. It will provide you with information on new projects or existing VS projects. After you get Mono installed, it's probably a good idea to run a quick Hello World program to make sure everything is setup properly. This allows you to know that your Mono is working before you try writing or running a more complex application. To write a "Hello World" program follow these steps: Start Mono Development Environment. Create a new Project: File->New->Solution Select "Console Project" in the category list. Enter a project name into the Project name field, for example, "HW Project". Click "Forward" Click “Packaging” then OK. You should have a screen very simular to a VS Console App. Click the "Run" button in the toolbar (Ctrl-F5). Look in the Application Output and you should have the “Hello World!” Your screen should look like the screen below. That should do it for a simple console app in mono. To test out an ASP.NET application, simply copy your code to a new directory in /srv/www/htdocs, then visit the following URL: http://localhost/directoryname/page.aspx where directoryname is the directory where you deployed your application and page.aspx is the initial page for your software. Databases You can continue to use SQL server database or use MySQL, Postgress, Sybase, Oracle, IBM’s DB2 or SQLite db. • Slimbox 2 Plugin, jQuery Flickr, and IE8

  Hello, I am currently developing a site that I make use of two jQuery plugins: Flickr jquery plugin (http://code.google.com/p/jquery-flickr/) Slimbox (http://code.google.com/p/slimbox/) The first plugin is used to pull in flickr photos from a specific account. These photos are displayed as thumbnails on the page. I am then using the second plugin to display larger views of these images. Because the flickr photos are fetched when the page loads, I am calling the Slimbox 2 function like this: $(document).ready(function() { $("#Flickr").flickr(); //Call Flickr plugin $(window).bind('load', function() { $("#Flickr a").slimbox();//Call Slimbox2 }); }); On first testing this seemed to have worked perfectly. I tested multiple versions of FireFox, IE7, IE6, and Safari. Everything is great. However, the Slimbox lightbox effest does not work in IE8. However, if I put IE8 into compatibility mode, everything works as expected. I would like to avoid forcing compatibility mode. There are no javascript errors and I am at a loss for testing. • Opening a LWJGL window from a SWT app on Mac

  I have a SWT app that opens a OpenGL window (using the LWJGL library) after a button is pressed. Works fine on Windows. On Mac, I get this error: 2010-03-05 02:28:25.315 java[1315:a07] [Java CocoaComponent compatibility mode]: Enabled 2010-03-05 02:28:25.316 java[1315:a07] [Java CocoaComponent compatibility mode]: Setting timeout for SWT to 0.100000 2010-03-05 02:28:25.317 java[1315:a07] Apple AWT Startup Exception : _createMenuRef called with existing principal MenuRef already associated with menu 2010-03-05 02:28:25.318 java[1315:a07] Apple AWT Restarting Native Event Thread The SWT window closes and then the app hangs, with no windows open. It looks like the SWT app doesn't shut down cleanly and leaves it's menu entries associated with it, which prevents the LWJGL window from opening. Mac OS X only wants one application menu. SWT doesn't free it's own menu and LWJGL wants to add another. Facts: A button in the SWT dialog is supposed to close the dialog and open a LWJGL window (org.lwjgl.opengl.Display). The button sets a static variable in the app to tell it what to do next after the SWT window is closed, so the LWJGL window is NOT being opened from a SWT callback directly. The button then closes the SWT window. I don't know the correct way of doing this but tried various combinations of shell.close, shell.dispose, display.close and display.dispose, none of them worked. They all close the window but the error occurs every time. Does anyone know what could be done to make this work?

• Problem upgrading eclipse rcp app from 3.3 to 3.5 on Mac OS

  I previously had an eclipse rcp app based on eclipse 3.3 pugins deployed on both windows and mac OS X 10.4. i'm now trying to port the app to java 1.6 and eclipse 3.5 (Build id: 20100218-1602) plugins on Mac OS X 10.5.8 (Leopard). I can launch the product from eclipse 3.5 on windows but not on Mac OS X. I have the 64bit cocoa eclipse IDE and java 6. In the launch configuration I set runtime JRE to JVM 1.6.0 and added required plugins. The plugins validate and everything else looks similar to windows configuration where it works, but when I launch i only get the following two lines in the console: 2010-03-16 13:29:32.742 java[758:10b] [Java CocoaComponent compatibility mode]: Enabled 2010-03-16 13:29:32.744 java[758:10b] [Java CocoaComponent compatibility mode]: Setting timeout for SWT to 0.100000 and then the program appears to just hang indefinitely. There is nothing written to the .log file so I'm not sure what error there is. • How to avoid XCode framework weak-linking problems?

  Hi, I'm building an application that takes advantage of Mac OS X 10.6-only technologies, but without giving up backwards compatibility to 10.5 Leopard. The way I do this is by setting the 10.6 SDK as the base SDK, weak-linking all frameworks and setting the deployment target to 10.5 as described in: http://developer.apple.com/mac/library/DOCUMENTATION/MacOSX/Conceptual/BPFrameworks/Concepts/WeakLinking.html This works fine; before making a call that is Snow Leopard-only I need to check that the selector or indeed the class actually exist. Or I can just check the OS version before making the call. The problem is that this is incredibly fragile. If I make a single call that is 10.6 only I blow Leopard-compatibility. So using even the normal code code completion feature can be dangerous. My question: is there any way of checking which calls are not defined on 10.5 before doing a release build? Some kind of static analysis, or even just a trick (a target set the other SDK?) would do. I obviously should test on a Leopard machine before releasing anything, but even so I can't possibly go through all paths of the program before every release. Any advice would be appreciated. • Instanced drawing with OpenGL ES 2.0

  In short: Is it possible to use the gl_InstanceID built-in variable in OpenGL ES 2.0? And, if so, how? Some more info: I want to draw multiple instances of an object using glDrawArraysInstanced and gl_InstanceID, and I want my application to run on multiple platforms, including iOS. The specification clearly says that these features require ES 3.0. According to the iOS Device Compatibility Reference ES 3.0 is only available on a few devices (those based on the A7 GPU; so iPhone 5s, but not on iPhone 5 or earlier). So my first assumption was that I needed to avoid using instanced drawing on older iOS devices. However, further down in the compatibility reference document it says that the EXT_draw_instanced extension is supported for all SGX Series 5 processors (that includes iPhone 5 and 4s). This makes me think that I could indeed use instanced drawing on older iOS devices too, by looking up and using the appropriate extension function (EXT or ARB) for glDrawArraysInstanced. I'm currently just running some test code using SDL and GLEW on Windows so I haven't tested anything on iOS yet. However, in my current setup I'm having trouble using the gl_InstanceID built-in variable in a vertex shader. I'm getting the following error message: 'gl_InstanceID' : variable is not available in current GLSL version Enabling the "draw_instanced" extension in GLSL has no effect: #extension GL_ARB_draw_instanced : enable #extension GL_EXT_draw_instanced : enable The error goes away when I specifically declare that I need ES 3.0 (GLSL 300 ES): #version 300 es Although that seem to work fine on my Windows desktop machine in an ES 2.0 context I doubt that this would work on an iPhone 5. So, shall I abandon the idea of being able to use instanced drawing on older iOS devices?

• CSS3PIE issues in IE6 and 8

  I'm using CSS3PIE to apply some rounded corners to elements in Internet Explorer that will get them by stylesheet in other browsers. I've run into some issues with it though. In IE8, I discovered that any element that had the PIE behaviour would behave strangely. The container would jump a few pixels to the right, but the content would stay in its original position, giving the appearance that the content had all shifted left relative to its container. This would be especially problematic on elements with no or small amounts of padding. I was able to hack my way around the problem in IE8 by using X-UA-Compatible, but I'd rather avoid this solution if at all possible. I don't have access to IE9 for testing but my understanding hacks like PIE aren't necessary and it would be wasteful to force a compatibility mode in a browser that doesn't need it. I have worse issues in IE6, with the PIE layout breaking down completely on a list that is set up to use display:inline; zoom:1; list items (to simulate inline-block, which works in IE8 and the other browsers). Here the borders of the list items get rendered in completely the wrong place. So ideally, I'd like to have PIE work properly in IE6, and in IE8 without having to resort to compatibility mode. As far as IE6 goes, a graceful fallback where PIE is just not applied will do. IE7 is the only browser where the page displays as intended. I can't provide an example page just at the moment unfortunately, I can add one later though. Follow up: Here are some screen grabs made with IE Tester. I'm hoping they will make things a little more clear for everybody. As you can see, IE7 is fine. However, in IE8, the containers are offset to the left relative to their content, and in IE6 the list elements (with the rounded 1 pixel border) are a complete mess! • A good php framework in 2012

  I've done a lot of googling around this, and practically all of the answers I find are pre 2011, and are answered in the usual, here are the 5 most popular frameworks... So I'd like to update this topic for 2012, I'm going to build a web application with a pretty complex back-end system driving it, and I'd like to use a framework so I don't have to reinvent the wheel. My application will be hugely user based, so I would appreciate a built in authentication/validation system. (When this is missing it takes me a good 2 weeks of intense and frivolous research to try to pick the "best" one (I don't want to roll my own, I don't think I'd do a better job than what's out there). I've looked into a tried a few, so I'll give you what I like and don't like, but I don't want to bias answers too much. I don't like: Frameworks that auto-generate bloated code. If they have the feature, fine, but if I have to use it, I get frustrated. Backwards compatibility with php4, eww. I don't need backwards compatibility at all. I like: Getting up and running quickly (but without all the auto-generation bogus), what I mean by this is that all the essentials are there, so I don't have to come to a grinding halt to research what the best 3rd party plugin is to get the feature I need. Thorough documentation, good tutorials. Good presentation of these materials. Please explain why your framework suggestion is good, don't just give the name of a framework without any justification. • DriveImage XML fails with a Windows Volume Shadow Service Error

  I'm trying to image a SATA laptop hard drive, using DriveImageXML, that is attached to my computer via a USB adapter. I'm running Win7 Ultimate 64 bit. DriveXML is returning: Could not initialize Windows Volume Shadow Service (VSS). ERROR C:\Program Files (x86)\Runtime Software\Drivelmage XML\vss64.exe failed to start. ERROR TIMEOUT Make sure VSSVC.EXE is running in your task manager. Click Help for more information. VSSVC.EXE is running in Task Manager, as is VSS64.exe. Looking at the FAQ on the Runtime webpage this turned up: Please verify in Settings-Control Panel-Administrative Tools-Services that the following services are enabled: MS Software Shadow Copy Provider Volume Shadow Copy Also make sure you are able to stop and start these services. Possible reasons for VSS failures: For VSS to work, at least one volume in your computer must be NTFS. If you use only FAT drives, VSS will not function. The required NTFS volume does not need to be identical with the volume you want to image. You should make sure that VSSVC.EXE is running in your task manager. If the problems persist, registering "oleaut.dll" and "oleaut32.dll" using "regsvr32" might help. Both of those services are running and can be started and stopped without issue. Using "regsvr32" to register ""oleaut32.dll" returns successful, but "oleaut.dll" returns: The module "oleaut.dll" failed to load. Make sure the binary is stored at the specified path or debug it to check for problems with the binary or dependent .DLL files. The specified module could not be found. Some other information that might be relevant. Browsing to the drive is successful, but accessing certain folders returns an "access" error. Windows runs a permissions adder that adds the current user profile to the NFTS permissions. Could this be the cause of the issue? DriveImage XML is running as Administrator. Thoughts?
