  • sql developer cannot establish connection to oracle db with listener running

    I am working from home and connected to my work's vpn. I have tried to connect to the work db with sql developer (the latest version and the previous version) on the following environments: mac os x 10.8.5 (with sql developer launched and installed directly on the iMac. sql developer launched and installed directly on a vm on same computer (guest Ubuntu 12.04 LTS) sql developer launched and installed directly on a vm on same computer (guest Windows 7.0 Professional) I get Status Failure Test Failed : IO Error - The Network Adapter could not establish the connection. I have read dba forums and googled and the most common suggestion is that the oracle listener is not up and running. I can conclusively say this is not the case because I have the option of using remote desktop and accessing the oracle db in question on my work computer. If the listener was down, according to my DBA, no one would be able to connect. My sysadmin and dba are stumped so I assume it is something unique to my home system. The reason I do not want to continue with the remote desktop workaround is because remote desktop has an annoying (infuriating often) lag.

  • MS SQL Server 2005 Express rebuild master DB problem

    Hi ! There has been a power loss on our server and i cannot start the SQL service because the master DB is corrupted (as the log states). I found many articles recommending running the setup.exe with optional parameters: This is what I did: I've downloaded SQLEXPR32.EXE from MS page and ran it The first problem was, that it extracted all the setup files and started the default installation procedure. (which was unuseful for me as I need those params). If I canceled it, all the extracted files disappeared. That's why I decided to copy the extracted files somewhere and than cancel the default installation. Now I'm trying to run the setup.exe from the extraction: setup.exe /qb INSTANCENAME=MSSQLSERVER REINSTALL=SQL_Engine REBUILDDATABASE=1 SAPWD=xxxxx it asks me if I want to rewrite the system db, which is what I need, but then while installing I get this error: *An installation package for the product Microsoft SQL Server 2005 Express Edition cannot be found. Try the installation again using a valid copy of the installation package 'SqlRun_SQL.msi'* Then it tries to install something and it states: cannot install because the same instance name already exists. But I don't want to install a new instance .. Any idea how to solve this, please? Thank you in advance !

  • Which database to use and system/db administration by layman [closed]

    So my friend and I got briliant ;) idea for a business. Since it is not predictable whether it will work out or not, we decided to keep cost as low as possible to start with, in particular not to hire anyone. If it will work out as expected it will generate enough profit to hire professionals in few months. But for the first few months we'll be doing everything by ourselfs. He's a business/finance major, and I'm a software developer, so obviously I have to take care of IT :) It will be a webapp, written in python/django. My questions regarding this project: 1) What database should I choose? I'm experienced with oracle, and have been working with SQL Server for a while, but both of them are too expensive(at least now). It's a developer experience, I've never done any dba stuff. I'm looking for something free(as in beer). Looks like MySql or PostgreSQL are most popular in this sector. I would appreciate any comments on which db to choose. I'm open to any suggestions(it doesn't have to be MySql or Postgre). Here's what I know about data: It will be almost dates and numbers, a little bit of text. Searched mainly by dates. Data will almost never be updated, mostly inserted and browsed. From 30k to 300k new records/month. 2) Servers. My idea is to rent two dedicated servers. During normal operation one would be a web server(debian/apache), other would be a db server(debian/?). My recovery plan is to install everything on both, and in case of trouble with one of machines just run everything on the other one. Does it even makes sense? Any other tips appreciated. Thanks.

    Im a newbie for this , i want to copy all the files from my old server which is running opensuse 10.1 with a software raid 1 to a new server which has open suse 12.1 with a hardware raid 1 , i had set up a backup script on the old server which back's up all the folders into a zip file onto an external drive . Can i just get that zip file and copy it to the new server , will that work , it might be a basic and stupid question but i want to learn and do it right. How can I get these backup processes to stop so they release resources? Simply killing the processes doesn't work. The process will stay in KILL/ROLL for a long time. This didn't change for several hours.

    While doing a kernel backup of an mtd (Memory Technology Device) from /dev/mtd/mtd3ro of a TI board gives many "BCH decoding failed", Here are system info #cat /proc/mtd dev: size erasesize name mtd0: 00080000 00020000 "X-Loader" mtd1: 00140000 00020000 "U-Boot" mtd2: 000c0000 00020000 "U-Boot Env" mtd3: 00500000 00020000 "Kernel" mtd4: 1f880000 00020000 "File System" here is the method used, dd if=/dev/mtd/mtd3ro of=/data/local/tmp/mtd3.bin doing a cat also returns the same error, and here is the error, BCH decoding failed BCH decoding failed yes, the destination has enough space ;) tell me what do you think? However I have a tar archive of the entire structure that is more up to date and healthy so now I want to extract all files (including directory structure) based on a date filter on the files if possible?

  • backup aws ec2 to separate account

    I want to backup my AWS snapshots to a completely separate AWS account for additional security (if my AWS credentials were acquired someone could delete all my snapshots and volumes). But I'm a bit stumped on how to do this. There doesn't seem to be a way to store a volume or snapshot in S3 such that another user could access that data in s3 and store it in a separate AWS account. Does anyone have any suggestions on how to acheive this? Thanks

This support article http://support.apple.com/kb/HT4226 from Apple explains how to backup calendar data by exporting to an .ics file. I would like to automate that process via AppleScript, Automator or any other method (paid software is fine). The sticking point with AppleScript is selecting the calendar on the left hand column. In Automator I don't think the available actions support this level of automation.
