• Purpose of Adobe PDF Link Helper

  I have an idea of what this browser add-on does. Adobe PDF Browser Control (AcroPDF.dll) Apparently, if I disable this one, PDFs embedded in a page with the embed or object tag fail to function properly. So, its pretty clear as to its function. However, I can't find anywhere accurate documentation on what this add-on below does. Adobe PDF Link Helper (AcroIEHelperShim.dll) IE9 (with Reader X) seems to work flawlessly with it disabled. PDF's still open within the browser. Only if I uncheck Display PDF in Browser in Readers preferences does that cease. I played around on an XP VM with IE7 and Reader X... no isssues noticed when disabled. Does anyone know the purpose of this add-on? At one time I believed it was necissary for the 'within browser' functionality to work, though that was never verified. Something change?

• combining sed with xargs to obtain a source and output file name

  I have a situation where I have some input files like this: M2U0001.MPG M2U0180.MPG And I want to run a command (in a bash shell) on each similarly named file in the directory. I'd like the current file name to be given to this command as an input and a modified version of the filename to be given as an output file. Here's an example: ffmpeg -i M2U0001.MPG M2U0001_fixed.MPG I had the idea of using xargs and sed, but this is as far as I got: ls -1 *.MPG | xargs -I{} ffmpeg -i {} `echo {} | sed -r 's/[0-9]{2,}/&_fixed/'` But this results in the original filename being output in both positions. Am I totally going about this the wrong way? I found that if I echo the filename directly to the embedded chunk like this it works: echo M2U0001.MPG | sed -r 's/[0-9]{2,}/&_fixed/'

• With the Supermicro Embeded BMC, is it possible to connect to Serial Over Lan via SSH?

  I have several dozen Supermicro servers which use the Supermicro Embedded BMC. The documentation on that page suggests that I can access the Serial Over LAN (Serial Console) over SSH: SMASH and CLP support SSH based SOL Power control of the server But when I ssh into my BMC, all I see is a Busybox implementation, with no clear ability to connect to the SOL: # ssh 192.168.100.100 -l ADMIN [email protected]'s password: BusyBox v1.1.3 (2011.02.12-01:48+0000) Built-in shell (ash) Enter 'help' for a list of built-in commands. # show -sh: show: not found # smash -sh: smash: not found Supermicro support is giving me inconsistent answers. Is it possible to connect to the SOL via the SSH interface?

• Missing "log on to" field in Windows 2008 password change dialog

  I have to setup an embedded standalone CIFS server outside of domain environment. I shall refer to the server as storage_gateway. The default password setting for the Administrator account is Password must be changed. Until Administrator password is changed other local accounts are disabled. While the server is on default password connecting to a share causes fails with NT_STATUS_PASSWORD_MUST_CHANGE error. $ smbclient -L //storage_gateway -U Administrator session setup failed: NT_STATUS_PASSWORD_MUST_CHANGE I have a mixed Linux/Windows environment and prefer smbclient for diagnostics. To change the password in Windows 2003 Server I could press CTRL-ALT-DEL to get into the Windows Security window and change password for the remote server specifying the server name or ip address (xx.xx.xx.xx) in the system password change dialog. (the name root is just an example, I have edited the dialogs to translate them) However in Windows 2008 the corresponding dialog lacks the Log on to field. Is there a way to change a remote password in Windows 2008 Server/Windows 7?

• Microsoft equation editor space problem

  Hello all, When I use the Microsoft equation editor, if I have a word that is greater than 10 characters in length, the equation editor automatically breaks the word and puts spaces in between them when the object is embedded in a powerpoint slide. For example- If I have the word "automatically" in the equation editor, it shows up just fine when I am editing the text in the equation editor. But when I update this object to the powerpoint slide, it shows up as "automatica lly". There is a tab or 5 spaces between "automcatica" and "lly". Is there any way to solve this problem? • vector quality of svg and pdf

  I'm converting pdf files to svg as it is easier to use svg files on webpages. I first thought the quality of svg must be similar to pdf, as they are both vector graphics. However, now I look a little better on it, it seems that pdf is a bit superior: (https://dl.dropboxusercontent.com/u/58922976/Photos/1.png) I wonder if I could change this in some way. Is this because pdf vectors are just better quality ? Or is this because chrome renders svg in lower quality than adobe reader renders pdf ? Is this a setting in the svg file that I could change ? • How to change the fonts used in Foxit Reader?

  I really want to use Foxit Reader as my default PDF reader for its Tab Interface, and low memory footprint. Having tried mutiple times over the years the only thing that is stopping me are the Fonts. PDF in Adobe Reader looks Regular, but PDF Rendered in Foxit Looks Ugly. Would this solution works in Chrome as well? Since i record Chrome is using Foxit Reader as its embedded PDF engine. And is there any reasons why Fonts are used differently in Adobe and Foxit Reader?

  I have console access to an embedded linux device. This device has flash memory part of which is partitioned as a FAT filesystem. Its running linux-2.6.31.   I use Linux as primary OS. I need some suggestions regarding how should I set up my desktop and development. I do work on mostly .Net and Drupal, but some time on other lamp products and C/C++, Qt. I'm also interested in mobile (android..) and embedded development. Currently I install everything on my main OS, even I use it a little. I use VMs a little. Should I use separate VM for each kind of development (like one for .Net/Mono, another C++, one for mobile and one for db only, one for xyz things etc) Keep primary development environment on main os and moveothers in VM. main os should be messed up keep things easy to organize (must) performance should be optimal

• Reverse rdesktop or VNC overlay image!

  Hi all. I've got a central server (linux based) and many clients (Windows XP Embedded, afaik) in public places around my country. I need to have these clients to connect to the server with a "reverse" tunnel, that is to say that I need to control the clients from the server but the connection is initialized by clients. The requirement is that, during the connection, an overlay image (or something like that, like a modified version of login screen) is displayed. Some stuff like "Work In Progress". My first idea was to use vncviewer -listen and vnc in reverse mode, but cannot understand how to obfuscate the work I'm doing. Other idea was to use rdesktop in "reverse" mode, but it seems it does not support it. Using rdekstop reverse seems the nicest solution (I can login back the user was in before connection, the login manager - which I can modified - is displayed), but any hint will be appreciated! • Rewind print job under Windows Server 2008

  Hello, We are in the transition from Novell NetWare to Windows server 2008. In case of the printer server we print jobs thousands of pages long. NetWare printer manager has a handy function which allows to rewind a print job to a specified page. In case of a paper jam at the 750 page on a 800 page document this is really convenient. Does anybody know if there is a solution for this? The lists printed are in plain ascii lists with printer command characters embedded, and we are using dot matrix printers.   My embedded Linux device have 2 partitions: small root partition containing OS. big data partition which uses ext3 I want to encrypt the data partition by using encrypted file system. I don't want loose any data of the partition. Size of the root partition is too small to hold all data of the data partition. It is not possible to use any external data storage. Is there any tools that can convert filesystem of the data partition from ext3 to encrypted fs without copying all files to other place?

• Dual boot OSX and Windows 7 natively

  I'm considering getting one of those new fancy Mac Book Pro's with the fancy screens, but after reading some stuff on the internets about running Windows 7 with bootcamp: https://discussions.apple.com/thread/2770866?start=0&tstart=0 It seems you can't use the integrated graphics with windows, this causes windows to chew the battery life: I am afraid it is not possible. Since Apple introduced dual graphics chip laptops, they kept the low power/embedded GPU hidden under Window and they expose only the power hungry discrete GPU. It feels that this is being done on purpose so that it appears to users that OS X offers a better experience and battery life over Windows. So running bootcamp and windows kills the battery, running in parallels means you don't get accelerated 3d support (or something along those lines), so you don't get the performance out of it. I'm wondering: Is it possible to natively dual boot Windows 7 on a MBP, and if so would/does that give windows access to the integrated graphics to be able to not rape the battery?

  Did anybody try to install Hyper-V on Intel Atom platform? Hyper-V requires: x64 compatible processor with Intel VT or AMD-V technology enabled Hardware Data Execution Prevention (DEP) It seems that both requirements are satisfied with Atom as processor. However, I wonder whether there is some blocking issue (e.g. BIOS that does not support it) since all Atom motherboards I checked had quite old north/south-bridge. My intentions are to run two low-requirements virtual machines (embedded Linux), so performance should not be an issue.

• How to Enable old networking protocols in Windows 7

  Hi, A few days ago I installed Win7 32bit on a PC and it wouldn't talk to my Lacie NAS which is running WinXP embedded. My other Win7 PC's had no problem. After a bit of searching I found a forum post that told me to enable older networking protocols on the Win7 PC, I think it was win98 protocols or something like that. I had to run a .msc program to do this. It fixed the problem. Now, I have a similar problem on another Win7 PC and for the life of me cannot find that posting and cannot remember what I did!   I'm looking at an excel work-book with potential definitions for a column(upto 135) referenced from an adjacent sheet. E.g. Sheet 1: Col C (values 0-134 defined in Sheet 2 ) Each row in Col C Sheet 1 may have any combination of the values separated by commas. E.g. 0,1,8 Sheet 2 must maintain statistics of the occurence of each value. This is done using COUNTIF. The issue here is that COUNTIF doesn't handle an embedded value too well. When so done, the reference to '1' in the above example won't appear. How can this be done without resorting to a sub-routine?

• MS SQL dts to ssis migration error

  Hi, I have migrated some DTS packages to SSIS 2005 using "Migration" wizard. When I tried to run it, it fails saying you need a higher version of SSIS even though the destination SSIS server is on 9.0.4211 level. then I digged in the package using business intelligence studio and saw that one of the package subtasks is "Transform data task" (the dts version) and the package fails to run that. The storage location for this dts task is set to "Embedded in Task". I didn't touch it. why didn't it convert this task to an SSIS data flow task? any help please? Thansk in advance

• Cannot connect Office 365 email with Outlook 2010

  I have an email address of the form [email protected] that I am accessing through this site. I had connected my email to Outlook 2010 and it was working fine. Recently, it started requesting credentials every time I logged in, without connecting to the email server even after entering the correct password. I had already decided to reinstall Windows 7, so I thought that would also fix this problem. Unfortunately it did not. I tried the troubleshoot function embedded in the Office 365 capabilities, but it did not find anything wrong. I suspect that one possible source of this problem could be the fact that in the control panel it states Mail (32-bit) while Windows is 64-bit (office is 32 as well). In addition when trying to remove an email account from the list it remains there unaffected. Does anybody know what should I do in order to fix this problem?

  Hi, i need to do a presentation dvd of my photos, so i would like to make a nice flash gallery with my photos embedded inside flash files, so there is no way of stealing my shoots just browsing dvd folders. Inside a dvd i'll have plenty of space so i don't care about the size of the flash file itself. There is any way to do that? Because as far as i see, all the flash galleries uses an XML file to load the images from outside, so all the shoots are jpeg put in another folder, and anyone can take them just copying the folder.

  I'm working on an embedded system which is going to be booting and hosting it's rootfs on an SSD disk. We are currently looking at using Intel X-18M SSDs. The file system structure will have a fairly static /usr section (modulo software upgrades) and an active /var and /var/log for maintaining state and logging. Given the wear-levelling done by the underlying flash does having separate partitions help or hinder? As modern SSDs appear as straight block devices and hide their mapping magic behind their firmware is there any point trying to optimise the choice of file-system that sits on-top of the SSD? Finally does enable SMART monitoring make any sense in this context or are their SSD specific ways of determining the underlying health of the storage hardware?

• xorg DPMS off: keep VT from turning screen back on

  I have an embedded board with a small UPS. When AC power goes down, I need to turn off all power hungry devices in order to have a clean shutdown. First thing I do, is set DPMS to force powerdown, then go through the usual SIGTERM/SIGKILL/umount sequence. I have an Intel i915 Display adapter connected to an LVDS LCD panel. Unfortunately, when Xorg dies, Xserver or the VT code turn the LCD panel back on. I even tried working around it by directly poking the panel enable register in the Display chip, so that X doesn't know about it, but the panel goes back on when the VT comes back. Is there any "legal" way of keeping the display off? Thank you

• Does Ubuntu 12.04.1 come with everything I need for using virtual servers and are the tools efficient?

  I noticed that Ubuntu 12.04.1 comes with Xen, OpenStack, KVM and other virtualization-related tools. I have used VMWare in the past. If I was to use Xen for visualization, would I see considerable performance lost, since Xen is run on the host OS? Is it even run on the host OS, or is it like VMWare where it's installed below any Linux OS on the machine (embedded, I guess is the word)? Do you have any recommendations on what sort of set up to use with these built-in tools? I have 2 physical servers, side-by-side. Each will need a VM used for Postgres and a VM used as an app server. One will be a failover for the other.

• Google Chrome can't play some flash videos

  Some flash videos won't play in Chrome, while they play perfectly in other browsers. The player will load, but instead of showing a preview of the video and a play button on the middle of the video, the screen is black: Here's an example of a video that does not work and here is a video on the same site that does work. The video that works is a Youtube video embedded on the site with JW Player, while the nonworking one is probably hosted by the website itself. In both cases it is using Flash. The site is popular and others don't seem to be experiencing this problem. I am running Win7 64bit and I have no ad blockers installed. I have found two common solutions to this problem, neither of which work: Solution #1: Remove all flash application data. Solution #2: Enable and disable Chrome's built in flash and System's flash. Any suggestions?

• sniffing on a switched LAN

  Hi, I often find myself in the position of having to sniff on a connection between for example an arm board I am developing on, and another computer on the network, or out of the network. The easy situation is when I can install a sniffer on the computer talking to the embedded device. When it is not possible, I currently install an old 10Mb/s HUB. However I am afraid my HUB might stop working, and I would like to know some alternative. Here are the alternatives I could think of : Buy another HUB. Is that still possible ? Have some sort of ethernet sniffing bridge, like what they do for USB. I am afraid this kind of device is expensive. use ARP poisoning.
