• Approach for monitoring internet backbone traffic volume

  I'm interested in getting a picture of relative volume across different internet backbones. In particular, I'd like to see how traffic volume over a given route differs over the course of a day or from one day to the next. InternetTrafficReport.com is the closest approximation to this that I've found online, and their approach is to test ping times to a number of key routers from several geographically-dispersed servers. This sounds like one straightforward way to measure, but I don't have several geographically-dispersed servers. Is there a different approach for sampling this type of information from a single server?

• How to disable internet access at night on the router?

  I have an internet connection that I'd like to be enabled only during the day. With multiple household internet devices, this would need to be something disabled at the level of the router. I don't believe the router offers this sort of functionality, but I'm reasonably familiar with setting up web servers and the like, and I'm wondering if I can set up some sort of proxy server on the internet that the router must go through and have that proxy only active at certain times of day. It's a bit vague I know, but is something like this even possible? If not, are there other solutions to the problem?

• How do you record how much memory an app is using on OS X

  I'm on a Mac Mini with OS X 10.8.2. I am an app developer, but in this case am building an app in C++, so I can not use Xcode for this question. I would like to track how much memory my app is using, but I don't want to manually record it. How do I do this. MORE INFO: I want to record it all day long. I will have the app running all day, so that I can compare peaks in memory. I am not opposed to 3rd party apps, as long as they are reliable. Thanks.

• VMware vSphere 4.1: host performance graphs show "No data available", except the realtime view, which works fine

  Here's our scenario: Site 1 has 3 hosts, and our vCenter server is here. Site 2 has 3 hosts. All hosts are ESXi 4.1 update 1. If I view the Performance tab for any host in Site 1, I can view realtime, 1 Day, etc., i.e. all the views give me graph data. For the hosts in Site 2, I can view the realtime graphs, 1 Day and 1 Week both say "No data available". 1 Month had mostly nothing, 1 Year shows that it was working fine for a long time and then started breaking. 1 Month view: 1 Year view: What would cause this loss of performance data?

• Download folders from dev server to local drive

  I am developing a .net web application on a local environment. I have a dev server that the application is installed on. Within the web application on the dev server I have four folders that I dont have locally and that are controlled by another application. In my day to day development I require the four folders on local PC. I would like to automate the process of pulling the folders from the dev server to my local drive, so I can keep thing in sync. Ideally something like this Run file from main folder (be it a bat file, powershell, some sort of job, open to recommendations) Download 4 folders supplied to it. First download bring everything down, from them on only pull the changes Not sure where to start with achieving this but would appreciate any help would with. I know there are apps out there that do something like this but would like to give a go writing something to do this before I resort to using one of them.

• High load on X3220 Quad Core Linux Apache server

  I'm seriously in need of help. My sites are now nearly impossible to use because of massive loads on my server. I'm already a month late on my mortgage and this really isn't helping my situation. I've been working on fixing this intermittent load problem for months (never this bad). I'm suspecting some kind of attack since I'm under DDOS attack a lot! I've been trying to figure out what is causing the load but I'm afraid I just don't have the experience or knowledge to understand all the data I've been looking at. I don't even know where to begin or how to test for the large array of attacks out there. Here's some data you might find useful... Server: Xeon X3220 Quad Core 2.4 GHz - Linux, FreeBSD 500 GB HD and 8 Gig of Ram. Runs Centos release 5.7 Server Version: Apache/2.2.21 (Unix) mod_ssl/2.2.21 OpenSSL/0.9.8e-fips-rhel5 mod_auth_passthrough/2.1 mod_bwlimited/1.4 FrontPage/5.0.2.2635 mod_qos/9.74 Warning: All sites are softcore adult sites - mostly fantasy art like elves and amazons. 1) Sites may run fine for weeks or just days at less than 10 load then start jumping to 40-80 load - no idea why. Same sites, same mods, same amount of traffic - just WHAM! 2) I get an email almost every day that says: "Large Number of Failed Login Attempts from IP (different each time)". My webhost (who almost never helps me) told me it was a udp flood or something. 3) I've changed the port for MySQL from the default. If I ever put it back to the default - I get Loads of over 100 from what must be a constant mysql port flood. 4) I've reconfigured MYSQL. I've spent a couple weeks turning all the mods/plugins off, waiting a day and then turning them back on the next day or later if there isn't any change (there hasn't been). For example, on Thursday I'll turn off videos, on Friday I'll turn off chat.. etc and nothing changes the load appreciably. 6) Joomla info: All SEF turned off - sh404sef completely disabled and removed. Components: Joomla 1.5.22, Jomsocial 2.0.5, Kunena 1/31/2011, HWDMediashare 11/22/2010 and JBolo Chat 2.7.3, Comet Chat or Envolve Chat. Page Compression is on, Cache is on 15 mins. • Windows Firewall failing after 9-12 hours?

  I have 2 VM servers in the exact same NIC configuration: Server 2003 R2, one NIC connected to private (hardware firewall) network in a 10.x private address space, and one NIC connected straight to public internet. Windows Firewall is enabled for the Public Internet NIC only. Now, what doesn't make sense - this fails generally after 9-12 hours. It's not exact, but once or twice a day, traffic will just stop on the Internet NIC. No event log entries when it happens, and restarting the Windows Firewall service as well as stopping or restarting IPSec Services (just for fun) has no effect. Once the server is rebooted, everything is fine again for another 1/2 day. Any suggestions?

What I'm looking for is a syntax that will provide me with statistics on what users have emailed "Sent" for the day. I would like to know get information on what all users of a specific distribution group has emailed for the day. I have tried the following to no avail. • Router loses connection to internet randomly

  I have a Belkin wireless G plus Mimo router and it randomly loses the connection to the internet. It seems to happen for a second or two, not enough to impact day to day browsing. But enough to disconnect games, or stall videos I am watching. It happens whether I am plugged into the router or connecting via wifi. I am unsure if it is my router or Comcast that is causing this issue. If I connect a computer directly to the modem the problem never occurs, so that tells me it is probably the router. But I also had a Netgear wireless router WGR614, and it had the same problem. I don't know where to start looking for the source of the problem. What logs should I be combing through? All my machines are win 7 of varying versions.

• How to scale out OpenStreetMap data efficiently

  For over a year now, I'm running an in-house PostGIS server filled with OSM data, used for both Mapnik-based tile generation and Nominatim-based geocoding, updated with day replicates. This works pretty well. However, as usage is growing exponentially, I would like to achieve better reliability and performance by adding additional PostgreSQL servers. And I'm kind of lost. Since PostgreSQL doesn't seem to handle replication by itself, I would think about using a piede of middleware like PgPool-II to keep the servers in sync. But I'm afraid it would be nothing but necessary for this usage : very high read-to-write ratio, where all writes are done at the same exact time every day. My questions are simple : What would you do to keep these servers in sync? And, what is done for this at the OpenStreetMap Foundation, MapQuest, Mapbox or CloudMade? Thanks.

One day i tried to SKIP the SSIS Package and next day i hvnt Done the IIS reset. What could be the problem. Is there any alternate Solution for IIS reset.   Given am Exchange Server 2003 running on a dedicated server on a LAN protected by a Linux in DMZ, Microsoft says that if you upgrade, you should install two different servers (meaning two boxes, two licenses of Windows Server and two installations of Exchange) with different Exchange "server role". Exchange is installed in a safe LAN, there is a Linux relay in DMZ that feeds messages to Exchanges and gets from it the messaged to be delivered on the Net (smart relay). The mail traffic is about 2000 Internet messages/day and probably another 2000 msg/day sent by local users within the organization. The servers hosts 200 users.

• Linux Centos - Mail Deamon Preferences

  I keep getting emails from root into my inbox, I get about 30 a day which is annoying as hell and I'm wondering how I can filter these emails down so that I only receive the essential emails. I don't want to have an email every single time I log in via SSH, but when you 30-40 a day sometimes it can get pretty annoying. Is there a section in cPanel or WHM where I can tick or un-tick a section to choose which emails I wish to receive? I also get mail deamon bounce email messages which I'd also like to disable. I've looked and looked, but I think I'm either overlooking something simple or I'm looking in the wrong place.

• Scheduled task based on Microsoft patch release cycle

  I have a simple powershell script which unapproves all patches based on computer group name in WSUS which works great. All of our servers patch on a specific Day/Week/Time starting on Week0-Wednesday which would be the Wednesday after Microsoft Patch Tuesday (2nd Tuesday of every month) all the way to Week3-Sunday. This obviously causes problems as sometimes not all patches get applied in one reboot cycle, and then will install patches the following week during their group policy scheduled patching day/time which is what I'm trying to prevent. My question is I'm trying to schedule my script to run based on this schedule and I am finding it next to impossible using Windows Task Scheduler. For instance if I wanted something to always run on the 4th Monday after Microsoft Patch Tuesday, I cant always use the task scheduler option "4th Monday of the Month" Has anyone run into a similar situation, or know of any task scheduling tools which give you more flexibility than Windows Task Scheduler?

• DPM 2010 PowerShell Script to Easily Restore Multiple Files

  I’ve got what I thought would be a simple task with Data Protection Manager 2010 that is turning out to be quite frustrating. I have a file server on one server and it is the only server in a protection group. This file server is the repository for a document management application which stores the files according to the data within a SQL database. Sometimes users inadvertently delete files from within our application and we need to restore them. We have all the information needed to restore the files to include the file name, the folder that the file was stored in and the exact date that the file was deleted. It is easy for me to restore the file from within the DPM console since we have a recovery point created every day, I simply go to the day before the delete, browse to the proper folder and restore the file. The problem is that using the DPM console, the cumbersome wizard requires about 20 mouse clicks to restore a single file and it takes 2-4 minutes to get through all the windows. This becomes very irritating when a client needs 100’s of files restored… it takes all day of redundant mouse clicks to restore the files. Therefore, I want to use a PowerShell script (and I’m a novice at PowerShell) to automate this process. I want to be able to create a script that I pass in a file name, a folder, a recovery point date (and a protection group/server name if needed) and simply have the file restored back to its original location with some sort of success/failure notification. I thought it was a simple basic task of a backup solution, but I am having a heck of a time finding the right code. I have seen the sample code at http://social.technet.microsoft.com/wiki/contents/articles/how-to-use-a-windows-powershell-script-to-recover-an-item-in-data-protection-manager.aspx that I have tried to follow, but it doesn’t accomplish what I really want to do (it’s too simplistic) and there are errors in the sample code. Therefore, I would like to get some help writing a script to restore these files. An example of the known values to restore the data are: DPM Server: BACKUP01 Protection Group: Document Repository Data Protected Server: FILER01 File Path: R:\DocumentRepository\ToBackup\ClientName\Repository\2010\07\24\filename.pdf Date Deleted: 8/2/2010 (last recovery point = 8/1/2010) Bonus Points: If you can help me not only create this script, but also show me how to automate by providing a text file with the above information that the PowerShell script loops through, or even better, is able to query our SQL server for the needed data, then I would be more than willing to pay for this development.

• Windows 7 freezing unexpectedly

  I have a Windows 7 computer here, which is freezing between 2 times a day and 1 time every second day. I see no problem, no special drivers, no special Apps are open, no encryption or something like that. Apps usually open then are Firefox, Thunderbird, Eclipse and maybe Office. Computer is just freezing. No Reboot, no shutdown, no bluescreen and no error. User has to hardreset it. Eventlog shows me an kernel error saying it has been unexpected rebooted due to an fatal error, but no statement about what kind of error happended. Anyone an idea what it can be? Chkdisk should be ok (currently, I run it a second time).

  I have recently purchased Dedicated Server which has 16bg ram and 1TB Harddisk. It has Cpanel and for firewall CSF Installd. I am mainly going to install it for File hosting service. Now the day i moved my httpd service keep restarting every 15-20 mins. It becomes unresponsive after that so have to manually restart it. My httpd settings are Start Servers = 5 Minimum Spare Servers = 5 Maximum Spare Servers = 10 Server Limit = 20000 Max Clients = 10000 Max Requests Per Child = 10000 Keep-Alive = On Keep-Alive Timeout = 5 Max Keep-Alive Requests = Unlimited Timeout 300 TOP is top - 14:53:41 up 1 day, 23:39, 2 users, load average: 0.10, 0.14, 0.09 Tasks: 1563 total, 1 running, 1562 sleeping, 0 stopped, 0 zombie Cpu(s): 0.7%us, 0.6%sy, 0.0%ni, 98.1%id, 0.2%wa, 0.0%hi, 0.5%si, 0.0%st Mem: 16303780k total, 16142048k used, 161732k free, 135264k buffers Swap: 8224760k total, 868k used, 8223892k free, 14136616k cached Please help me in this its keep happning.

Coming from a *nix background I am missing all the nice tools that we have for diagnosis and troubleshooting. My question is what are the safe, free (not terribly concerned if it is like beer or freedom -both acceptable) tools out there that Windows system admins use for their day to day troubleshooting (network, applications, servers etc). I am aware of the tools that come with Windows (and their limited capabilites) - so my query is with what do you fill in your arsenal? (may be a list of win versions of tools that come in standard linux distros)

  Riddle me this: You have 3 part numbers with the same part name xyz, each with a quantity of 10 items. The items can be picked during the day or week, therefore changing the amount of items on hand. I know I need to use the group by, sort, count and perhaps sumif formulas to have a running count of the number of items on hand at the end of each day (which could be positive or negative). • What does the 'X' in .aspx, docx, xlsx, etc... represent?

  It's one of those things you just take for granted until one day someone asks you and you realize you can't answer it. Much like for years I never questioned the use of 1033 directories in Microsoft products for years until one day, someone asked me about it. Around the release of .NET and Office 2007, Microsoft added an x to basically all of their extensions and I frankly took it as representing XML, but that simply doesn't make sense with .aspx. So, I realize this is a very non technical question, but now that the question has been asked of me and my googling hasn't given me an answer, can anyone tell me with authority what the X represents? Is it extended? Xml? Or is there no meaning behind it?

  I've had users sending copyrighted files (songs, videos) to each other over email. I blocked the file extensions .mp3 etc. What some users have done is to rename files to .doc etc. I cant block .doc etc filetypes because they are needed for day-to-day work. I'm using MDaemon 12 mailserver, Does anyone know how to make it block these attachments? I've been working on some content scanning for filetype code, but was wondering if there is a already made solution?

• Windows Server 2003 guest on Xen frequently stops responding

  I'm running a Windows Server 2003 guest instance in Xen 3.x. This DomU runs fine for a day or two, then stops responding — I don't get any network response, and I can no longer connect to Xen's VNC console for this DomU. xm list shows this: Name ID Mem VCPUs State Time(s) Domain-0 0 6508 8 r----- 1161159.4 [A working Linux DomU] 1 512 1 -b---- 68711.1 [The hung Windows DomU] 5 512 1 ------ 67234.2 [Another working Linux DomU] 3 512 1 -b---- 163036.4 (What does the ------ mean? The xm manual explains what each of the six states mean, but not what no-state means.) If I xm destroy and then xm create the Windows DomU again, it boots right back up (with the Windows alert The previous system shutdown at [...] was unexpected.), and then stops responding after another day or two. I checked /var/log/xen/*.log, but no log messages are generated at the time the server stops responding. How should I proceed in troubleshooting this?
