• Mac OS X 10.6 issues connecting via vpn to Microsoft server

  I am currently running Mac OS X Snow Leopard and trying to use the native vpn client to connect to our Microsoft vpn server. If I route all traffic via the vpn connection I am able to connect to our servers, however, external traffic to i.e. google or stack overflow is blocked. If I uncheck the checkbox to route all traffic via the vpn I can connect to the vpn, however, I can not connect to my servers, external traffic to google or stackoverflow works though. Is this a vpn client issue, do I need to purchase Mac OS X vpn software instead of the native client, or is there a Microsoft vpn server setting that has to be checked. I am not familiar with the server software, but I wanted to post this question here to help out our network admin with the Mac OS X machines.

• mac osx cannot connect to windows 7 machine

  I have a Mac OSX (Snow Leopard 10.6.6) setup on a network with several Windows 7 machines. When trying to place a large file on a Windows share the connection to the Windows share gets lost and I am unable to reconnect until I reboot the Mac. I know this is on the Windows side because the Mac can connect and transfer files to Server 2008 and XP without issue. Looking in the log file I see this message SharePointBrowser::handleOpenCallBack returned 12 I have tried restarting the com.apple.netauth.sysagent service but that did not resolve the situation. I can do an nslookup to the Windows 7 machine, but trying to ping the machine by hostname always gives a hostname lookup failure (I can ping via IP address). I cannot connect to the machine via IP adress either. Any help would be appreciated.

• Opinions on NTFS for Mac solution?

  I am currently using the free NTFS-3G to access my NTFS drive from the Mac. It seems pretty stable (except once in the very beginning, it locked up the Mac and corrupted my NTFS drive, which I then fixed with chkdsk from a PC). However, speed is NOT one of its virtues. In fact, it's painfully slow I've been looking at buying Paragon NTFS for Mac OS X 8.0. Their product comparison PDF claims nearly double the speed (vs NTFS-3G) in almost every category (read, write, etc...). In addition, there is now an unsupported native solution with the snow leopard. Can folks here share their experiences. Is the native solution stable enough to be used for daily work? Should I just go with Paragon?

  I have seen working solutions around the issue of forcing Internet traffic to go through the OpenVPN server but they are all done in Linux, all I want to know is how to add an entry to the route table in windows to make this happen. connectivity between the client and server is fine, my Windows 7 client can establish a connection to the Windows 2008 Server, but when established Internet traffic is still going from the local Windows 7 machine.   I am a math teacher who uses Word 2008 on the Mac, and I need to collaborate with other teachers who are using Word 2007 under Windows. When they send me a document with mathematical equations in it, I can open it but not see the equations or the document loses formatting such as superscript for exponents. On this page of Known Issues in Word 2008, Microsoft says, Equations saved from Word 2007 for Windows do not appear in Word 2008 for Mac Equations saved in Word 2007 for Windows are not supported in Word 2008 for Mac. The equations will be preserved so that they display correctly in Word 2007, but will appear as placeholders in Word 2008. What can I do to collaborate with users of Word 2007 on mathematical documents?

• Changing the mac address in a libvirt xml config file breaks network connectivity for the guest

  I'm using Xen with libvirt and trying to set it up on a bridged interface. I am able to install an OS and everything works as I would expect. If I save the xml output from "virsh dumpxml guest", edit the mac address for the interface, and then define the domU with this new xml file I find that traffic is no longer forwarded from the vif0.0 interface to br0. The ifcfg-eth0 file on the guest was automatically updated to reflect the new mac address and the ifconfig output looks the same. Does anyone know why this is happening or how to properly change the mac address for a libvirt configuration?

• Mac OS X Server add server user

  What's the recommended way to add a user to Mac OS X Server that doesn't need all the hoopla associated with Workgroup Manager? There are many users pre-configured in Mac OS X Server (www, root, ldapadmin, etc.) that don't have "Full Name" or mail accounts, etc. I'd like to create a 'svn' user to be the owner of our Subversion Repository as per this tutorial: If you've decided to use either Apache or stock svnserve, create a single svn user on your system and run the server process as that user. Be sure to make the repository directory wholly owned by the svn user as well. From a security point of view, this keeps the repository data nicely siloed and protected by operating system filesystem permissions, changeable by only the Sub- version server process itself. Wondering if there's a way outside of WorkgroupManager and OpenDirectory as this account will be entirely server based. Is this still sound advice under OS X Server? If so what's the easiest way to create the user (Mac OS X Server doesn't seem to respond to useradd).

• Rapidly changing public IP addresses on certain networks?

  I run/develop an online game where many of our users are in southeast asia. I recently went to southeast asia and made an alarming discovery. Anywhere I got internet access, whether it was via 3G, a LAN in a hotel, or wifi in a cafe, both in Singapore and the Philippines, I noticed that my IP address was changing CONSTANTLY. I mean the public IP address, not the private one. I could load a page like whatismyip.com and just hit reload and see a new IP address show up every 5-10 seconds! This has lots of consequences for my online game, as many things "break" if the IP address changes for a given user. Basically, I would like to know more about this. Is there a name for the kind of network or router or paradigm that causes this, so I can read up on it? I don't understand WHY a network would function this way. Does it do this on purpose? Is it for security reasons? Is it to anonymize and protect the identity of the users? Or is it just an "old" method that is mostly obsolete in the rest of the world? • Formatted mac external hard drive loaded on pc

  I have an issue where it appears that an external hard drive which had been formatted on a mac system was loaded as a drive in Windows. Windows is obviously unable to read the data and now the drive won't mount in the mac. It appears that Windows overwrote something concerning the drive's information on what filesystems and types it has on it. Mac diskutility is unable to repair the drive and the partition is showing up in the utility as a FAT32. Using an applexsoft utility, I am able to verify the data is still on this drive, but I'd rather not spend $100 to save these files (its not my hard drive anyways). Is there a way I can use some UNIX commands to find out the partition information on the drive, back the raw data up on it, then restore the data back onto the drive after re-formatting it again?

• Lotus Notes doesn't open from Dock

  Ever since installing Lotus Notes on my mac I haven't been able to properly access it from the dock. If the program is off then it will open up fine the first time but then clicking on the icon will not make Notes jump to the front of the screen. It is only a minor thing but as it is the only program on my dock that I need to CMD-Tab to access it gets pretty annoying! Any help would be greatly appreciated.   I have my Time Machine backups on an external disk (WD My Passport with no hardware encryption) and I'm worried if the data stored on the disk is safe in case somebody steals it and connect it to any Mac/PC. • Stable MSN messenger for mac?

  I use Adium in my mac as a client for MSN messenger. (I have also tried the "official" live messenger for mac for a while but it had even worse issues than what I am experiencing with Adium). Everything works fine for the first 5-10 minutes, perhaps until the first automatic "away", then suddenly any message I send is followed by a dozen or so messages saying: "Message could not be sent because a connection error occurred:" and Message may have not been sent because a timeout occurred: If I send a few messages, they usually eventually arrive (all at once) after a long delay. Windows machines on the same network running live messenger work fine. Any ideas why this might be, or suggestions for a client that might work when both Adium and Microsofts own messenger for mac seem to disconnect?

• Snow Leopard can see Windows shares in Finder but can't connect

  I have an iMac with the latest version of Snow Leopard on it. I have a NAS drive and a Windows machine that both show up in the Finder's 'Shared' section. However, if I click on them, Finder says "Connection Failed". Clicking on 'Connect As...' gives an error dialog that says "The server 'blah' may not exist or it is unavailable at this time." Points of interest: All machines are receiving their IP/DNS info from the router using DHCP. I have a Mac Mini on the same network that connects to the NAS drive and windows machine perfectly with no config (i.e. worked out of the box). Both Macs are on the same version of Snow Leopard. There is no password required to access the NAS share. I've never setup a WINS server on any machines and all machines are using 'workgroup' by default. I've tried putting "workgroup" in the Mac's workgroup entry and have tried leaving it blank, neither solves the problem. Here are some things I have tried: Finder-Connect To Server: smb:///share. This works, but by name does not. Terminal-mount_smbfs //@/share share. This also works by ip, but not be name, resulting in "mount_smbfs: server connection failed: No route to host". If I put the IP address of the NAS in the WINS server entry in the Mac's network setup, I can connect by name. It obviously seems to be a name resolution error, but I can't figure out why. The only thing that has changed since it used to work is that I got a new router that now gives out DHCP (all machines are dhcp clients) addresses of 192.168.x.x, but used to be 10.0.x.x. I've grep'd through everything that might have saved that old address, but can't find anything. It's also worth noting that the second Mac (the one that connects successfully) was added to the network after the router change. Please let me know if there are additional points of information needed to troubleshoot this further. Thanks, Randy

• Ping server NETBIOS name returns wrong IP and "Destination host unreachable"

  Problem server is Windows 2008 R2 VM running on VMWare ESXi 4 host. Single network adapter manually assigned single IP address (192.168.1.11). When I ping the server from any other network computer, it returns 192.168.1.124 and "Destination host unreachable". Yesterday I found a second network adapter assigned to this server with an IP of 169.254... indicating it had no real valid IP. Using the MAC addresses I determined which adapter was not needed/not wanted, and removed it using VMWare systems. This is the network Printer Server and, understandably, nothing is printing right now. I've looked at the solutions here Why was my ping answered by a different IP address than the one pinged? and they aren't applicable to my situation for the following reasons: Output of arp -a on another computer returns the correct IP address (.1.11) assigned to the correct MAC address, the incorrect IP .1.124 is not listed, and the MAC of the network adapter I removed yesterday is not listed at all. I checked out the Microsoft KB article which listed pretty much my exact symptoms ( http://support.microsoft.com/kb/981953 ) and it says to check binding orders and look for hidden adapters. But there are no hidden adapters, and there is only one Network Adapter listed in the Binding Order list. Essentially, I can communicate from the server TO any other network device, but I cannot communicate from any other network device TO the server. Help! • Browsing Pictures on a Mac

  Hi. After many years using linux, I decided to buy a mac. Now my main problem is: how do I synchronize pictures within my linux machines and the mac? I have been using digikam in linux, and I like it because I can just browse the pictures directly from my directories (and it is easy for me to keep directories synchronized within mac and linux). I have been testing iphoto and aperture, which are quite nice but if use them, my understanding is that I have to import all the pictures into these softwares, and this doesn't seem to be the ideal solution for me. I tried picasa, but I don't find it as good as iphoto and aperture. On the other hand it allows me to browse directories, without having two copies of the same pictures. I didn't try lightroom yet, would that be a good solution? I would appreciate any suggestion on this. Thanks!
