• Ubuntu 12.04 boot freezes

  I installed win7 on one of my machines. It works without any problem. Now I can not install Ubuntu 12.04 (11.10, 11.04) because the installation process stops in a very early stage: I can see that ISOLinux was loaded, then I can see some very simple icons, then I can see text messages of the kernel. The last message I can see: [6.177983] sr 5:0:0:0: attached scsi general ss1 type 5 At that point the system stops. I tried different versions (11.04) , I disabled, and then disconnected the hdd, but the same problem occured independently from my actions. I can boot a gparted live cd, but that system can not see my hdd. On the other hand, I can boot the installation cd of the latest stable Debian distribution without any problem, but I would prefer to use Ubuntu, because I use that distribution on all of our machines.s Configuration: Asus P8H61-MLE motheboard, Gigabyte GTS 450, Intel i5, 4gb ram, wd 1T sata hdd Any idea? • Developing a computer system based on Nand2Tetris [on hold]

  I recently finished a book called Nand2Tetris (nand2tetris.org) where I built my own computer system from scratch with its own machine language, assembly code, and a high level language called Jack that's translated to Hack binary. However, I feel like the "computer" I built throughout the course of this book (called the Hack computer) is a bit too simple for various reasons: 1) There are only two registers (D and A), whereas most computers have much more 2) Peripheral devices like mouse and keyboard have to be directly implemented 3) Peripheral devices use a pre-planned shared memory map to communicate with the CPU instead of using interrupts (which aren't covered at all) 4) Jack (the high level language) code doesn't compile to Assembly code directly, instead it compiles to an intermediate language, which in turn gets translated to Assembly. 5) There is no ROM or permanent storage device, everything is stored in RAM 6) No support for colored monitor, networking or sound I would like to build a more complicated computer system now based on what I've learned from Nand2Tetris. Does anyone know of any good resources or books to get started on this? (BTW by computer system I mean software that can emulate the hardware of a virtual computer with its own unique instruction set)

• Ubuntu partitions on Dell XPS13

  I bought a Dell XPS13 with ubuntu 12.04 pre-installed. I want to reformat and repartition the machine but as I'm far from being a linux guru, I'm afraid to erase something important that could have been preinstalled by Dell. On the disk, there are 3 partitions: /dev/sda1 - Ext4 Linux bootable 248GB - witch is the system+user partition I guess, /dev/sda2 - Extended (?) of 8GB - What is this partion about? /dev/sda5 - Linux Swap of 8GB - whitch is for RAM and need to be reconduct (why only 1xRAM and not 2?) Do I have to care about /dev/sda2 ? According to you can I reformat to create a partition for /home whitout losing anything important (except user data of course) ? Thank you for your help

  My girlfriend had her Dell Pre-Installed with Windows Vista when she bought it,then she upgraded it to Windows 7 and then 8.Since she wanted an Operating System which is fast and powerful i suggested Ubuntu for her.She runs a Dell Inspiron 1420 with 2 gigs of ram and an Nvdia 8400M GS,though the laptop is a bit old,it does her things like a dream. So,I have used a Flash Drive(8 Gigs) to install Ubuntu 13.04 on her system and used "Overwrite the Windows 8 OS".Then afterwards when I logged in I can't find any of her files which was on her WIndows 8 installation. Anyone know a work around with this?!

• Ubuntu 12.04 crashing

  We have a server with 2x32gb sas raid 1 and 4x1tb raid 10 + 2x1tb hot spares. Whenever we try to copy the 1tb and 1.5e6 files to a backup location (even just using tty1 cp command) it fails. We have tried using backintime and dejadup, and resorted to a manual cp to an external usb2 HDD. When that failed, we tried installing an internal HDD on the mobo (not on raid) and another cp, which also fails. The failures lock up the system and we are left with an unfortunate hard reboot situation. After reboot, syslog tends to be empty (only containing newly booted data) and we haven't a clue where to start. It has been 3 weeks since our last successful backup and we are getting nervous... -using 3ware raid controller, 8gb ram and nvidia pciexpress graphics with a gigabyte mobo and xeon 4-core processor.

• Compiz runs almost at 100% and the system is slow, what can I do?

  My system became very slow out of the sudden, yesterday Compiz was running extremely smooth, today it started working very slow and slowing the computer. What I've done so far was to resize my swap partition to 6 gigabytes (my computer has 3 gigabytes of RAM), before it was on 5.1 gigabytes, so I though that was the reason of this but still not. Also I tested running only metacity by running metacity --replace and also with Mutter. With metacity works really great no problem but, in the other hand, with mutter the computer works slower than running compiz instead. I am using the Nvidia driver version 173.14.28 and my X Server version as reports the NVidia X Server Settings is the 11.0. My Linux kernel running on this computer is 2.6.35-25-generic and my ubuntu version is 10.10. Any help will be appreciated.

• Ubuntu runs really slow on netbook

  so I installed Ubuntu through Wubi in my netbook (Compaq Mini, 1.6 GHZ Atom, 1 GB RAM, 250 HDD, Windows 7 Starter) and decided to keep the original OS and run both... The thing is that, after I installed Ubuntu (really hyped: a couple of friends told me this OS was amazing, much faster and eaiser to use than Windows) and selecting it from the boot menu, I find that it runs really slow, sometimes freezing for a sec... For what I know, there must me be a partition in C:/ and a lot of HDD space for the Installation Size to make things faster, but I am sure I got those things right... Any help?? Also, why doesn't Wubi ask you for the DVD or bootable USB drive?? I'm just new in all this guys...

• Why does 12.04 freeze when using multiple desktops?

  I am using 12.04 32-bit, upgraded from 11.10. Within the last week and a half Unity has hung on me with no option but a hard reboot, which I hate. It usually happens when I am using multiple desktops and applications and switching desktops. The screen just hangs, sometimes broken between desktops and applications, I can move my mouse but cannot click on anything. alt+f2 , HUD , super+w/s/d and alt+tab/~ does nothing, they do not activate. I let it rest for 15-20 minutes in hopes it will sort itself out but nothing. I'd hate to move to Unity 2D, but I can't risk having to do hard reboots/shutdowns, or moving to a different DE. Other information: the only PPA's I have added recently would be the word lens. 2.8GB RAM processor : 0 vendor_id : AuthenticAMD cpu family : 15 model : 127 model name : AMD Sempron(tm) Processor LE-1250 stepping : 2 microcode : 0x83 cpu MHz : 1000.000

  I have been moving from windows to ubuntu recently. I have both windows 7 and matlab for windows license keys. My question is, is it possible to use wine to install matlab(for windows)? will the performance of matlab being affected? Except wine, dual-boot, and purchase a new matlab for linux license key, what other options do I have? Thanks for help Update: I just searched for virtual box, will it be a good alternative? Update: After trying with virtualbox, I believe it will not be a good option, because it only run with the ram allocated for it. • Gateway m-1625 laptop keeps shutting down

  I have a gateway m-1625 laptop. The specs are: 3gig DDR2 ram, amd turino*2 processor 2Ghz, 250gig HD, windows 7 ultimate. After installing unbuntu 11.10 and using it for about an hour my laptop starts shutting down most times before even reaching the log on screen. I have re installed it twice but the problem still persist. I had this same problem with ubuntu 11.04. I have been using ubuntu for the last 5 years and never had this problem before. Windows 7, vista and fedora runs fine, it just ubuntu that gives any sort of issue. What could be causing this problem? has something critical been changed since the 10.10 version? I really love ubuntu and i want to be able to run it again

• HP DL360 G4 screen resolution problem

  I just bought an old blade server to mess about with at home and cant get the thing to work. I have run the installer 11.10 x64 server and that was fine. After installing and rebooting, POST is fine but when grub kicks in the screen shows a popup type box complaining that it cant use the resolution. I have tried different screens and its always the same. I can reboot and go back into the installer and the screen is fine. I tried to follow some guides on-line about changing the resolution but I cant get a terminal. I found one in the installer but that is using the ram as /. the installer says 'the drive is mounted as "/target"' but I don't see that, nor /mnt/target. Could anyone help me configure this and get it running. Thanks.

• Java is very slow on my laptop

  I have 1.6.0_30 JRE on my 11.10 install. I have 3 GB of RAM and an Intel Core2 Duo CPU T6600 @ 2.20GHz × 2. Whenever I use my Java to play a game, the Java runs at about 4-5 FPS. When I used Windows, I found that I could get around 40 FPS. I'm not too terribly worried about this, but are there settings that I can tweak that I don't know about? If not, why is it that JRE Java can't do as much on Ubuntu as it can on Windows? Also, this may be related but I'm not too sure--My fan runs very fast when running a Java application. Is there a correlation?

  My environment: I am doing these things at home with the purpose of learning about virtualization techniques. My machine have quad core processor that supports Intel-VT and 8GB RAM. XEN is the virtualization platform. In short, all domUs are LVM based. Mainly I have two questions; I need to have shared storage for these VMs. Something like NFS / NAS / iSCSI etc. However, I don't know which one is the best solution. Therefore, can someone tell me which suits best? Please note that, this shared storage need to be accessed by the other physical machines in the network.   HI, i want to buy a netbook for doing some stuff in the train. Can someone report how it is to code simple stuff on a netbook? 10/12". I wanted to buy a very cheap one. like 1gb ram 1,6ghz blabla. and run linux on it with apache. i will code with JS/PHP. and as IDE i'll be using notepad++. so nothing big like eclispe or something else. maybe later on eclipse for java, but that doesn't really matter. so first, would this setup work fine on such a netbook and, is it okay for coding? I don't style any homepages on the netbook, I just want to code. would be nice if someone can share his experience in that. thanks :)

  I use ubuntu server 10.04 on a fairly good machine, with 2.40 duel-core processor and 2GB RAM. My users login with ssh or samba. I have setup LDAP with PAM to sync user accounts between unix and samba. When I allowed about 90 users to login over ssh at once the server refused login for many users. I am using dropbear as ssh server. Even samba logins failed for many users. I need to allow at least 100 users to login at once. Is there anyway to do this?

  Trying to install Ubuntu Server 11.04 on an 64-bit AMD machine. The install goes fine until after "Loading additional components", then I get a blank purple screen with a responsive cursor at the bottom. I've looked everywhere and can't find anything (all the documentation seems to be on the desktop version). I have a wireless card installed if that makes a difference, don't why it would. This happens regardless of whether nomodeset is set. Players design and construct any vehicles they have. With good physics engine Has puzzles inside. Everyone get experience by doing stuff(RPG). Commerce, income or totally different resource-based group(like starcraft) Player classes(primitive: cunning and strong, wrapped: healthy, wealthy) Arcade top-down style firing with ships when people get bored very low chance of miraculous things.(mediclorians, wormholes, bugs) Different game-modes: persistent(living world), resetted periodically(a new chance for noobs), instant(pre-built space + hack&slash) I suspect this would need 128GB ram and 2048 cores.

  Hi, I am a creative coder using C++(cinder and OpenFrameworks) I am looking to upgrade from my MacBook, which slowed down to about 3fps this morning. My project involves particles systems and fluids reacting to audio analysis data and computer vision data in real-time. SD or HD? no biggie. I have asked many people what computer I need. Ideally, I want a MacBook Pro. But is that enough power? I've been told that I need a desktop for what I am doing though I'd rather stay portable I've been told that I should go PC linux to get the most power but I'd rather stay mac I've been told that RAM is more of bottleneck than processor speed I've been told that the Graphics Card is more important than CPU and that code optimizations such as using trees over lists, proper threading, sending tasks to the GPU make a bigger difference than the hardware!!! what's true?! what do I need?   I am using VB.net to write a parallel based code. I use Parallel.For to generate pairs of 500 objects or in combination C(500,2) such as the following code; but I found that it didn't always generate all combinations which should be 124750 (shown from variable Counter). • What is the best language to use for building a fulfillment engine [on hold]

  I asked this on stack overflow and was suggested to move it here. I do understand it is a matter of opinion which is exactly what I aim to achieve here... I wanted to know what you think is the best language to write a fulfillment engine in? I cannot provide much detail but I am trying to build a control interface for servers and i wanted to build a program daemon that would process data on the authoritative server and the slave servers( the backbone of the network) with their own daemons running would check regularly(every 5 minutes or so) with the authoritative server and process the commands(securely) I am trying to build this with a minimal footprint(cpu and ram wise for the slaves, authoritative is going to be scalable) and to make it automated so that the user does not have to configure the daemon(installation is automated by the authoritative server) I am leaning away from my usual php set up for simplicity sake. Edit: I am not an expert in any particular language but flexible enough and willing to learn another.

• Cursor seems to freeze in the first attempt to type - Unity 3D, 12.04

  It happens in the first attempt of typing, no matter is after the startup, or 5 minutes later, or then after. The cursor (or maybe it's the system) seems to freeze, no matter the application I use, taking up 4 to 5 sec to appear what is typed. Subsequently, everything is normal, using another applications. @Anwar Shah suggested it could be a daemon waiting to run before the lauching of the first application. Turning off Zeitgest didn't help. It occurs only with Unity-3d. Tested with Unity-2d, everything is fine. Tried to change some Compiz settings, nothing worked, although not tested with every single parameter. Also I deactivated Ati proprietary driver, no effect. My system: AMD E350 1.6Gh, 2G-Ram, ATI graphics - Ubuntu 12.04, 64bits. Is that what I should expect, or can be fixed or improved? Thanks.
