• What good technology podcasts are out there?

  Yes, Podcasts, those nice little Audiobooks I can listen to on the way to work. With the current amount of Podcasts, it's like searching a needle in a haystack, except that the haystack happens to be the Internet and is filled with too many of these "Hot new Gadgets" stuff :( Now, even though I am mainly a .NET developer nowadays, maybe anyone knows some good Podcasts from people regarding the whole software lifecycle? Unit Testing, Continous Integration, Documentation, Deployment... So - what are you guys and gals listening to? Please note that the categorizations are somewhat subjective and may not be 100% accurate as many podcasts cover several areas. Categorization is made against what is considered the "main" area. • NullPointerException when showing JFileChooser

• How * tag can be used in CSS?

  I'm trying to understand how a background image is used in a css button. It seems the image is much larger than the button, still the corners are matched to the button(resulting a rounded corner button). It seems it is related to .btn *. I couldn't find any reference about how * can be used. Can you explain how the image is rendered in the button, using the * tag? I assume * will match any element.   I need feedparser (se http://www.feedparser.org) for a project, and want to keep third party modules in a separate folder. I did this by adding a folder to my python path, and putting relevant modules there, among them feedparser. • Android SDK fails to install

  When I try to install the android SDK it fails to install. My OS is Windows XP I just downloaded and installed Java JDK 1.6 Java -version from the command line returns: http://stackoverflow.com/questions/ask java version "1.6.0_17" Java(TM) SE Runtime Environment (build 1.6.0_17-b04) Java HotSpot(TM) Client VM (build 14.3-b01, mixed mode, sharing) My environment vars have: JAVA_HOME=c:\progra~1\java\jdk1.6.0_11 I downloaded android-sdk-r04-windows.zip I unziped it in V:\AndroidInstall\ When I go to the V:\androindinstall\android-sdk-windows and type "SDK Install.exe" nothing happens... If I go this from graph When I do this from a graphical file viewer I get a quick flash that looks like a command line window and nothing.... When I try to run android list targets from the tool directory I get: Error: Error parsing the sdk. Error: V:\androindinstall\android-sdk-windows\platforms is missing. Error: Unable to parse SDK content. So the basic install setup is not happening. Additional clues: I have a G1 and Android 1.0 was running on this machine. (Almost a year ago) I've updated my G1 to 1.6 so I thought I'd update my SDK before starting new development. When I tried to upgrade it tried and then died as the "directory was in use" So I cleaned out all the android directories, rebooted and redownloaded everythign from scratch. Now it won't run at all. I've clearly got something in an unhappy state, but I've cleaned up all the directories and no remanants seem to be running I've rebooted.... I've missed somethign I just can't figure out what. Paul

• Why does the the Java VM not recover after "Too many open files" errors?

  In certain well-understood circumstances, our application will open too many sockets (database connections) and reach the maximum open files that the OS allows. We understand this; we are fixing the issue and also bumping up the limit. What we can't explain is why parts of our application don't recover even after the number of connections abates and we're well within the limit. In this case, it's an application running under Tomcat. When this happens, we first start seeing "Too many open files" errors: SEVERE: Socket accept failed java.net.SocketException: Too many open files at java.net.PlainSocketImpl.socketAccept(Native Method) at java.net.PlainSocketImpl.accept(PlainSocketImpl.java:390) at java.net.ServerSocket.implAccept(ServerSocket.java:453) at java.net.ServerSocket.accept(ServerSocket.java:421) at org.apache.tomcat.util.net.DefaultServerSocketFactory.acceptSocket(DefaultServerSocketFactory.java:61) at org.apache.tomcat.util.net.JIoEndpoint$Acceptor.run(JIoEndpoint.java:310) at java.lang.Thread.run(Thread.java:619) Eventually, we start seeing NoClassDefFoundErrors inside an application thread that's trying to open HTTP connections: java.lang.NoClassDefFoundError: org/apache/commons/httpclient/protocol/ControllerThreadSocketFactory at org.apache.commons.httpclient.protocol.DefaultProtocolSocketFactory.createSocket(DefaultProtocolSocketFactory.java:128) at org.apache.commons.httpclient.HttpConnection.open(HttpConnection.java:707) at org.apache.commons.httpclient.MultiThreadedHttpConnectionManager$HttpConnectionAdapter.open(MultiThreadedHttpConnectionManager.java:1349) [...] Caused by: java.lang.ClassNotFoundException: org.apache.commons.httpclient.protocol.ControllerThreadSocketFactory at org.apache.catalina.loader.WebappClassLoader.loadClass(WebappClassLoader.java:1387) at org.apache.catalina.loader.WebappClassLoader.loadClass(WebappClassLoader.java:1233) at java.lang.ClassLoader.loadClassInternal(ClassLoader.java:320) ... 8 more When the errant connections go away, the server starts accepting connections again, and everything seems ok, but we're left with the latter error constantly being spewed to stderr. Although the application typically logs unloaded classes to stdout, I don't see any such logs just before, during or after the "Too many open files" errors. My initial theory was that the Hotspot JVM would unload seemingly unused classes when it encounters "Too many open files," but if so, it doesn't log the fact. I'd also expect it to recover if that were the case. • Need help troubleshooting why Solr wont start (or why solr admin page wont show)

  I can't get Solr working. I have Jetty, and my server OS is Ubuntu 9.10. It is a VPS server. So, when I execute the java -jar start.jar everything seems fine. I even do a netstat to check if there are any listeners on the port before the start and after the start, and it seems solr is starting. However, I cant access the admin page. I have even turned off the firewall. Here is some info about my server: I have changed DocumentRoot to var/www/SV/ I have Apache2, PHP5, MySql installed I have "disabled" iptables firewall I have removed the htaccess files (I used them to passw protect my site under develop) I have installed JRE (NOT JDK) on my server. I use the "example" which comes with Solr, so I use Jetty as container on my Server. My Server has 768MB RAM Doing a java -version command shows this: java version "1.6.0_15" Java(TM) SE Runtime Environment (build 1.6.0_15-b03) Java HotSpot(TM) Client VM (build 14.1-b02, mixed mode) And in the terminal the last lines when executing start.jar is: May 29, 2010 1:30:03 PM org.apache.solr.core.SolrCore registerSearcher INFO: [] Registered new searcher Searcher@1dc64a5 main NOTE: Also before this last line, there is a line which makes me suspicious: Started SocketConnector @ 0.0.0.0:8983 // Should this be with leading zeros? Is there any ways you know to troubleshoot this? Memory issue maybe? Thanks

• Can xjc -version be trusted?

  I've spent the day debugging an issue with JAXB getting namespaces wrong or missing (possibly related to Marshaller.JAXB_FRAGMENT, but that's not the point here). I found the problem occurs with JAXB RI 2.1.10 in my endorsed dir. It is fixed if I use JAXB RI 2.2.4 or 2.2.6 Here is what is really confusing (and what made it take so long). The problem occurs on Linux with: $ java -version java version "1.7.0_03" OpenJDK Runtime Environment (IcedTea7 2.1.1pre) (7~u3-2.1.1~pre1-1ubuntu2) OpenJDK 64-Bit Server VM (build 22.0-b10, mixed mode) $ xjc -version xjc 2.2.4 but it should work fine, if this java really uses JAXB RI 2.2.4 !! Similarly, I can't reproduce the issue on Windows with Java 1.6.0_27, which reports: C:\Program Files\Java\jdk1.6.0_27\bin>java -version java version "1.6.0_27" Java(TM) SE Runtime Environment (build 1.6.0_27-b07) Java HotSpot(TM) 64-Bit Server VM (build 20.2-b06, mixed mode) C:\Program Files\Java\jdk1.6.0_27\bin>xjc -version xjc version "JAXB 2.1.10 in JDK 6" JavaTM Architecture for XML Binding(JAXB) Reference Implementation, (build JAXB 2.1.10 in JDK 6) and yet if I put 2.1.10 RI in my endorsed dir, the problem occurs. It should occur with 1.6.0_27, if that really uses JAXB RI 2.1.10. It seems to me that the problem I'm experiencing has been fixed in the reference implementation somewhere after 2.1.10 and before 2.2.4, but that neither of the 2 VM's above actually use the JAXB version they claim to. Or possibly they use the xjc they claim, but not what is in jaxb-api.jar and jaxb-impl.jar (I know there is a difference in the namespace prefix mapper property, but that won't be causing this problem). I've done these experiments on Win 7 and Ubuntu, in tomcat (no eclipse), and in eclipse (no tomcat), so I'm pretty confident I'm explaining my findings correctly. Can anyone provide any insight into what is happening? If I'm right, does anyone know what versions of JAXB the various Sun/Oracle JDKs really use?

  Hi, I am using JBoss4.2.2 and java6. The deployed ear's name is apa.ear In a servlet I have the following code line: placeBid = (PlaceBid) context.lookup("apa/" + PlaceBid.class.getSimpleName() + "/remote"); I have a generated jboss-app.xml like this: <jboss-app> <loader-repository>apa:app=ejb3</loader-repository> </jboss-app> When trying to get the PlaceBid via the context I get this exception java.lang.ClassCastException: $Proxy99 cannot be cast to se.nextit.actionbazaar.buslogic.PlaceBid The PlaceBid interface looks like this: @Remote public interface PlaceBid { Long addBid(String userId, Long itemId, Double bidPrice); } When I run the example coming with EJB3 in action it works. EJB3 in action sample code comes with ant building. I want to use Maven so I have rearranged the code some. However, I don't understan what I am doing wrong here.   The case I'm trying to update the INDY to the latest version for my Delphi XE (Update 1), so I downloaded the latest INDY10 file (Indy_4545.zip) from indy.fulgan.com/ZIP. After a quick comparision of old and new IdHTTP.pas I found a lot of changes on the TIdCustomHttp class, including the rename of some methods GetResponseHeaders to GetResponse GetRequestHeaders to GetRequest SetRequestHeaders to SetRequest Along with changed public/published method firms in this and other and classes interfaces. After the update, I got a lot of packages failing to load, including dclcxPivotGridOLAPD15.bpl, which in turns depends on dclDataSnapServer150.bpl which encounters the missing method on the bpl. AFAIK I can't recompile the dclDataSnapServer150.bpl (and maybe other failing packages, I just stopped here). DataSnap and DevExpress support on the IDE is a must for my day to day so The questions Is there a safe pre-established path to update to the newest INDY for Delphi XE? If not, am I on the safe side by just parching the source code by creating the old public methods and call the new ones on the implementation part? am I missing something else or am I really stuck with INDY 10.5.7 until the next Delphi minor/major release?

• Correct use of WSDL-generated sources

  How can I easily convert between manually written classes and WSDL-generated equivalents? I have a Java SE 6 thick client that calls a web service to get and store data. The client has a DAO that works with my entity classes, calls <Entity.toDto() to convert them to DTOs, and sends/receives that data with the web service. My issue stems from the fact that the entity classes live on both sides of the service interface: client and server. Each entity has a constructor from the DTO and a toDto function: public class EntityClass { public EntityClass(EntityClassDto dto); public EntityClassDto toDto(); ... } This means I have a handwritten DTO class that the client and server both use. However, the service interface expects the WSDL-generated classes. I have tried writing conversion code between the hand-written DTO and the WSDL-generated DTO and it is tedious and error-prone. What is a reasonable alternative to this? Some back-story: The thick client should be able to have a configurable backend: either direct to the DB or through this web service. The aforementioned DAO is the web service based implementation and another imlpementation that is JPA-based exists.

  Given a Java SE 6 client, I would like to provide a configurable back-end: either directly to a database or through a web service which connects to a centralized DB. To that end, I've created some JPA- and JAXB-annotated entity classes and a DAO interface in a POJO library like the following: public interface MyDaoInterface { public MyEntity doSomething(); } @javax.persistence.Entity @javax.xml.bind.annotation.XmlRootElement public class MyEntity { private int a; .... } Now, I would like to have my auto-generated web service stubs implement that interface and interact with my defined entity classes, rather than the generated classes provided via the JAX-B unmarshaller. So, the client-side pseudo code would be something like MyDaoInterface dao; if (usingWebservice) dao = new WebserviceDao(); else dao = new JpaDao(); MyEntity e = dao.doSomething(); Is this possible with JPA, JAXB, JAXWS? Is this even advisable? Currently we achieve this through a slow manual process of massaging code, copying generating classes, and doing other things that seem just plain wrong to me.

  Hi, I need some help with rewrite rules and nested URLs. I am using TikiWiki for my website and am in the process of setting up SE friendly URLs for my projects. Specifically, I have the following rewrite rule for www.example.com/projects to point to a page that lists out all the projects hosted in example. RewriteRule ^Projects$ articles?type=Project [L] This works fine. Now, I would like to point www.example.com/projects/project1 to point to a specific project. I have this rewrite rule RewriteRule ^(Projects/Project1)$ tiki-read_article.php?articleId=6 This works, but partially. The content is all rendered as text but the theme - images/ css etc all go for a toss - the page is completely in text. I understand that this happens 'cause the relative paths in the theme/ css/ images all refer to Projects as the base folder instead of the root of the website. I don't want to touch the CMS portion - change the theme/ css/ image paths in the files, more for reasons of upgradability. Can someone help me understand and write a rule so that the above nested URL works? Regards, Radha

• Unicode strings in my C# App are shown with question marks

  Hi, I have a header file in C++/CLR project, which contains some strings in different languages. arabic, english, german, chinese, french, japanese etc... I have a second project written in C#. Here I access the strings stored in the header file of the C++/CLR project. The encoding of the header file is Unicode - Codepage 1200 or UTF-8. the visual studio editor is able to display the strings correctly. At runtime I access these strings and assign them into a local String variable. Here I recognized that many strings are not shown correctly. Doesn't matter if I assign them or not. Accessing the original place (while debugging) shows me all the foreign strings with question marks. Especially chinese, just question marks. Example : "So?e St?ange ?ext in Ch?n?se" (This is not the best example, I know) What is the problem? I read that C# is by default UTF-16, My header file containing the strings is UTF-16 or UTF-8. I must be able to handle strings in different languages. What am I doing wrong?

  Take this site for example: http://pms.rs/contact Everything is just fine just by using this css for textarea: #kontakt input, #kontakt textarea{ width:250px; } #kontakt textarea{ height:150px; } But ofc chrome is always smarter and in it user can drag that bottom right corner of textarea and resize it to the size he likes. Call me control freak, but that is very dumb thing to have if no other browser is using that. On sites like this it is not a big deal, but somewhere it can cover the entire content and for me personaly, i like to limit as much as possible what user can do so he does not break my site(like for example adding too large images in posts on forums...). So i have to do something like this: #kontakt input, #kontakt textarea{ width:250px; } #kontakt textarea{ height:150px; max-height:150px; max-width:250px; } Just so i get chrome to play as all other browsers do... While i was typing this i realised that i really dont have any question per se, but i just thought to share this with SO public, so i will mark this as community wiki. Also some other things i noticed are inputs, i always have to put width for input or textarea just because chrome is always not rendering them as he should.

  I want to upgrade my jaxws to 2.2 (jdk1.6 comes bundled with jaxws 2.1). My jdk is (I did not install public jre): java version "1.6.0_20" Java(TM) SE Runtime Environment (build 1.6.0_20-b02) Java HotSpot(TM) Client VM (build 16.3-b01, mixed mode) In jaxws' own doc they explain how to do it: One way to fix this is to copy jaxws-api.jar and jaxb-api.jar into JRE endorsed directory, which is $JAVA_HOME/lib/endorsed (or $JDK_HOME/jre/lib/endorsed) But I am not sure this is having any effect in my installation. For starters I have only defined %JAVA_HOME%. And folder $JAVA_HOME/lib/endorsed is inexistant, so I created and copied the two jars. But if I do (wsgen is a tool from jaxws) wsgen -version I still get: JAX-WS RI 2.1.6 in JDK 6 I also tried creating folder JAVA_HOME\jre\lib\endorsed (notice that in the doc they say JDK_HOME, but as I only have JAVA_HOME I used this path). Still same wsgen output. My questions are: What is the difference between JAVA_HOME and JDK_HOME in the doc page? anything significant or just two ways to refer to JAVA_HOME ? Is 'wsgen -version' a valid way to check jaxws version that is used or this always calls the exe in the original jdk, but it does not mean endorsed jars will be used? Anyone knows very detailed steps to install jaxws2.2 in a jdk.16?
