• 1 Computer Pulls Wrong DNS Every Morning

  One of my users takes his laptop home, connects to his internal network fine. He brings it in every morning and since Monday - every morning it pulls the wrong DNS every time. It pulls 1 DNS: 192.168.1.1 which is the router. The DNS are external IPs. I have several users that take their laptops home and connect to other networks - what could cause this anomaly? He's booting up when he comes in the office and a simple ipconfig /release /renew fixes the issue.

• Fixing bent pins on a CPU

  While replacing a mainboard in a desktop machine (see related question), I did something stupid. I inserted the CPU into the new mainboard, but didn't check for the right position. When it didn't immediately lock in, I pressed slightly before realizing what was wrong. The result was a number of bent pins. I tried every tutorial that popped up when Googling "CPU bent pins" - using credit cards, sewing needles, and a hunting knife to get the pins back into position - but to no avail: For every pin I get straightened out, two others are bent. I have no problem getting individual pins straightened out, but my many attempts have led to many pins being slightly askew - enough for the CPU not to fit into the socket (An AMD X3 one). Maybe I just lack the motoric finesse. What I would need is some sort of a grid to fix all pins at once. It's a €50 processor so the loss is not catastrophic. But I thought before I go buy a new one, I thought I'd check here whether anybody knows some magic trick, or a cheap generally-available tool to fix this.

• DVD Drive Has Stopped Recognizing Discs

  My DVD drive no longer recognizes dvds, but does recognize CD-ROMs. When a DVD is in the drive, the computer continues to act as though there is no disc in the drive. However, when a normal CD-ROM is in the drive, it appears to work normally. I have tested on several discs, both video and game, and the behavior is consistent. I have also tested this on both Windows Vista and Ubuntu 9.10, and the issue remains the same. Can anyone recommend a way to fix this?

• Long term system health monitor

  As an experienced user, I sometimes notice that things are not going well with my computer. For example, my backup drive recently started cycling up and down, so I guessed it was probably dying, and replaced it. I detected this with my ears. Windows did not seem to notice or care. There ought to be software that monitors overall system health by keeping track of things like this, so that unusual events or increasing error rates will not be shrugged off. Among other things: disk errors that are recovered, corrupt network packets (at above the baseline expected rate) and crashes of trusted programs are early warnings. Is there any software that tries to use this kind of monitoring to warn of impending trouble?

• mirroing hard drives of different sizes

  I have a dell server with two 18 gig drives in a Raid 1 config. I want to replace the drives with 400 gig drives. If I break the mirror and then remove one of the 18g drives, insert a 400g and create the mirror, then do the same process again with the other 400g drive, what will I have? I would like to think I would have a new 400g raid 1 drive. But I seem to remember that this process might result in only 18g of useable space on the 400g drives. Anyone know for sure? Thank

  I'd like to (re)create an online version (html5/JS) of some old game, for example something like HoM&M 2. Maybe, some of old games were released as free or open source (I'm interested in the graphical assets only)? I heard something about Red Alert been released as free, but I'm not sure if it's permitted to reuse graphical assets in such manner. Do You know such games? Another question - can You please share Your thoughts, rough estimate - how much it will cost to pay an artist to create graphics similar to HoM&M 2?

• Google still has record of my old site URL - what to do?

  I had a blog site, i.e. http://example2.com, then I bought a new domain, i.e. http://example.com and 301 permanent redirected example2.com to example.com. But when I get into the Google Webmaster Tools, if I get some 404, and then click into the link and see the "Linked from" tab, it shows some links like: http://example.com/post-1 http://example2.com/feed http://example2.com/post-1 According to Google, if you change your domain, just use a redirection for at least 4-6 months, but it almost passed. Then why Google has still traces of my old site? The issue is important, because I don't want to pay for the old domain anymore. I tried deleting my existing sitemap.xml and recreating it from the new site, but still such links are stored. What could I do?

  So, let me explain more. There are a number of competing best practices for software development. I can find that many teams have benefited from Agile practices in some cases. In some other cases, using the Unified Process has been championed by large companies like IBM. The common themes that I find seemed to work well for teams that mainly develop software. I am interested to know what has worked best for people who have worked in shops where there is a team on the other side that produce the hardware that your software is running on. For example, one team puts together a crate with several custom hardware on it; while you need to develop the software that would run on those crates. I can't find a development model (agile, spiral ...) that works best in this case. Any wisdom is this area will be well appreciated.

  We have our old site into core PHP and we have developed it again into Joomla 1.5 last year( because of some limitations we have to build it into 1.5). Now the problem is the URL of sites changed as we have use SEO URLS on joomla. In between we have use .htaccess to redirect user from old URL to new like this Redirect /pages/oldpage.php http://www.mydomain.com/products/category/new_page.html Is this good practice to redirect user to new URL or not?(we have used same server). One more thing, We have used splash page on our site, and to set up it we have made some changes and because of it one of the important link is not working, and it is http://www.mydomail.com/index.php How can I get rid of it? I have used DirectoryIndex splash.html home.html index.php in .htaccess to open splash page first when someone open my site http://www.mydomain.com.   I have to following situation: I had an old blog that was made using Joomla (this blog was indexed well enough by search engines). For some problems I delete it and I have create it again using WordPress. Now I have many visit (from Google) that leading to specific pages of the old site (pages that don't exist in the new version). For example I have visit to URL as: /scorejava/index.php/corso-spring-mvc/1-test that don't exist on my new site. I would know if using the .htaccess file (or other sistem) I can redirect the HTTP request directed to some subfolder (that don't exist in the new version) to the homepage of my new site. For example I have the request towards the void URL: /scorejava/index.php/corso-spring-mvc/1-test. And I would create a regular expression that say something like: all the request toward the subfolder corso-spring-mvc (and all it's content file and subfolder) have to be redirected to www.scorejava.com. Is it possible?

• Compiling old versions of R (2.11 or older) on Ubuntu 13.10 (or newer)?

  I am trying to compile an old version of R (2.11.1, specifically). "Why?", you might ask. Well, I have a program I am trying to run (that was not written by me, but I am hoping to use in my research) that was written in "old" R, and the program writer has specifically mentioned that R-2.11.1 or older must be used. I have run ./configure with no obvious errors (the entire output being far too long to post here, but I have been warned that I cannot make PDF, DVI, or HTML versions of the help pages, which I'm not too concerned about). Next, when I pass the make command, I am met with the following error (after a long stream of successful commands): Warning in solve.default(rgb): unable to load shared library '/home/sbowerma/Programs/R-2.11.1/modules//lapack.so': /home/sbowerma/Programs/R-2.11.1/lib/libRlapack.so: undefined symbol: _gfortran_compare_string Error in solve.default(rgb) : lapack routines cannot be loaded Error: unable to load R code in package 'grDevices' Execution halted However, I have confirmed that the library lapack.so is, in fact, in the exact position it is supposed to be.

• Why are new pages not being indexed and old pages stay in the index?

  I currently have a site that was recently restructured, causing much of its content to be reposted, creating new URL's for each page. To avoid duplicates, all of the existing pages were added to the robots file. That said, it has now been over a week - I know Google has recrawled the site - and when I search for term X, it is stil the old page that is ranking, with the new one nowhere to be seen. I'm assuming it's a cached version, but why are so many of the old pages still appearing in the index? Furthermore, all "tags" pages (it's a Q&A site, like this one) were also added to the robots a few months ago, yet I think they are all still appearing in the index. Anyone got any ideas about why this is happening, and how I can get my new pages indexed?

  I got an old PC for free, similar to that one. Additionlly, I'm a hobbyist programmer who does mainly python and java under a linux (mostly ubuntu) development environment. And now I wonder what I could do with such a piece of crappy hardware and would be pleased to get a good answer. It's one thing if you code your app that could run on almost any pc (or webbrowser) but another if you got an own hardware platform which you could extend or more generally customize the way you like. • How do I find out which driver a piece of hardware is using?

  Today I'm trying to figure out which driver is best for my USB wireless dongle. Everywhere I look I just see Ralink STA but this isn't telling me which module this actually is. I'm sure there's a way of looking it up but the computer should be able to tell me, shouldn't it? Meta: This question is open to any piece of hardware, not just my wireless card. It would be helpful if we had a thread of useful diagnostic procedures so that other people can find out what's going on with their hardware.

  Hi all, Is it possible to simulate a USB drive with software only? I mean, for example, to expose a local memory space to the OS so the device manager will recognize it as a USB device. • When pointing to new DNS servers is there any chance of E-mails being lost if the old E-mail hosting service is still up?

  I am changing webhosts and will be using the new hosts mail servers instead of the old ones. I have created all the correctly named mailboxes on the new service but have also not yet cut ties with the old webhost. I am expecting that even if the new DNS values which point to the new hosts DNS servers and respective SOA\zone file with the new MX values have not yet propagated and an E-mail is directed at the old hosts mail servers as per the mx records in the SOA\zone records which the old hosting provider holds, the E-mail would still come through to the mailbox that's on the old host providers mail servers. So I am just trying to reaffirm if I got this right and it's essentially impossible for me to loose an E-mail since it will hit either the old hosts mail servers or the new ones ? Also is it possible to configure the same E-mail account to check and collect mail from different mail servers by entering multiple pop3 addresses ? And if I choose to keep the old web hosts mail hosting services as a backup by specifying the mx records for it with a lower priority in the SOA records hosted by the new webhost, is it possible to have any incoming E-mails sent to both servers by the mail daemon so I have two copies? Or is my only option having the primary mail server forward the E-mail somehow to the old mailserver ?

• How difficult is it for an old-school programmer to pick up an FPGA kit and make something useful wi

  I'm an old, old, old coder. (How old? I've used paper tape in anger.) I've programmed in a lot of languages and under a lot of paradigms (spaghetti, structured, object-oriented, functional and a smattering of logical). I'm getting bored. FPGAs look interesting to me. I have the crazy notion of resurrecting some of the ancient hardware I worked on in the days using FPGAs. I know this can be done because I've seen PDP-10 and PDP-11 implementations in FPGAs. I'd like to do the same for a few machines that are perhaps not as popular as those two, however. While I am an old, old coder, what I am not is an electronics or computer systems engineer. I'll be learning from scratch if I go down this path. My question, therefore, is two-fold: How difficult will it be for this old dinosaur to pick up and learn FPGAs to the point that interesting (not necessarily practical -- more from a hobbyist perspective) projects can be made? What should I start with learning-wise to go down this path? I know where to get FPGA kits, but I haven't found anything like "FPGAs for Complete Dinosaurs" yet anywhere out there.
