• Server drives: 2.5" SCSI less reliable than 3.5" ?

  Just had an HP 2.5" SAS 10k drive fail on a RAID5 array after about 2.5 years. It made me wonder if this was a fluke or an indication that 2.5" drives are less reliable than 3.5" SAS drives. I've had many 3.5" SAS drives running for many years without any issues (knock on wood). I would think that smaller drives would generate less heat and therefore be more reliable, but couldn't find any evidence of this. I realize all drives will eventually fail and that it's a crap shoot with any particular model, but was hoping someone could point out some related studies or comment on the SCSI drive sizes they've found to be most reliable in servers. • Hp pavilion dv7 power button

  My power button is non responsive I am getting LED for charging. I've taken it apart before to change the dc jack and it was fine and a few months later it just powered off. I try to power back on and is goes to start up then shuts off. I just took it apart and came to find the ribbon cable connecting the power button/speakers cover is barely hanging on do I have to replace the whole thing or is there a way to replace the ribbon cable?

• Server responses "bus error" to every command

  I have a linux machine dedicated to MySQL server with a pretty high load. Today I woke up and was terrified to see, that database server is down. I could connect to it via SSH, but it was responding with bus error to each and every command. [root@r1304 home]# ls Bus error [root@r1304 home]# tail /var/log/messages Bus error [root@r1304 home]# reboot Bus error [root@r1304 home]# free -m Bus error [root@r1304 home]# chkdisk Bus error I went to Data Center and did a hard reset, which seemed to help, but after a half an hour situation reapeated and now I can't even connet via SSH anymore. Any ideas what this could be? how to diagnose such a problem and what are possible fixes? • Can I charge USB devices from a powered hub that isn't connected to a PC?

  This will probably sound familiar to most of you... In my home, we have a whole bunch of devices that can be charged via USB (two iPhones, a BlackBerry, an iPod Touch, etc ad nauseam). We also have a bunch of USB chargers, each of which has a single USB port on it. I'd like to have something permanently connected to AC power with at least 4 USB ports on it, so we can just plug devices in and don't need to go looking for a free outlet. So here's the question: if I buy a powered USB hub, will that do the job even if I don't connect it to a PC? Ideally if you have a hub that you can personally verify will be suitable, let me know the manufacturer and model :-) Thanks in advance! • How is fire spread in server rooms and datacenters?

  Every now and then I read that a severe fire has happened in some datacenter, lots of equipment has been damaged and customers have gone offline. Now I wonder what is there to support and spread fire? I mean walls in a server room usually have little or no finish. Racks are made of metal. Almost all units have metal cases. Cables have (or at least should have) insulation of materials that don't spread fire. What is spreading fire in a server room or datacenter?

• Is PCI Express x4 faster or slower than a standard PCI slot for graphic cards?

  I am looking at potential motherboards for a computer I want to build and ran into this conundrum. The motherboard has two PCI Express slots that allow for 16 channel cards to fit in them. The catch is only one of them operates at 16 channels, the other operates only 4 channels. My question is, would it be faster to buy a PCI Express graphic card and install it in the 4 channel PCI Express slot? Or would it be better to buy a standard PCI graphic card and install it in one of the available PCI slots?

• How do I know when my on-board ethernet is dead? (Realtek 8112L LAN controller w/ AI NET2 )

  So I have an ASUS P7P55D-E Pro motherboard. It has an on-board Realtek 8112L LAN controller w/ AI NET2. I suspect that my LAN controller is dead but I don't really know for sure. This is what I know thus far: Everything was working, I have a triple booted system and ethernet was functional under Linux, Win7, and OSX. My ethernet is no longer functional under all three of the operating systems. I was experiencing random momentary internet outages before everything finally went dark. I don't know much about the AI NET BIOS tool but I believe it just checks for ethernet problems before you boot into an operating system. In any case, it doesn't find a connection upon boot. I've checked the connection on a couple of other machines and everything worked fine. I think I already know the answer to my question, but are there any other possible explanations, or is it dead?

  Hi, as suggested by the title, I want to change CPU: actually I have two computers, one with Ubuntu running on an AMD Athlon 64 dual core 5200+ and the other with FreeBSD running on an AMD Sempron single core LE-1250. I would like to swap (I am not sure that this is the correct term...) the CPUs from one computer to the other one, that is take the dual core from the ubuntu pc and put it inside the freebsd pc and viceversa. The mobo is the same. Do you think I will encounter problems?

• Microsoft Wireless Keyboard 3000 v2.0 not working, but paired Wireless Mouse 5000 on same receiver does?

  I have a Microsoft Wireless Keyboard 3000 v2.0 that was bought paired with a Microsoft Wireless Mouse 5000. They're both Bluetooth and use the same receiver. The keyboard no longer works. The receiver is fine, as the mouse still works. The keyboard is still detected by Windows when the receiver is plugged in. The batteries have been replaced. There are no on/off switches on the keyboard or mouse, and no re-sync button on them or the receiver. Results are the same when using the receiver in a different USB port, or on a different machine. Anything else I might try to fix this, or should I hold a funeral for the keyboard?

• Can a power loss break an hard disk?

  Today I was working when all of a sudden a power loss (in the entire house) occurs. I tried to reboot the machine but it states that there's an "Ebios error"; tried with an Ubuntu 9.04 live cd and while booting it states that there are various I/O errors on the first partition (the one with the boot sector). Now I managed to backup all of my data (using the live cd aforementioned) but I don't know if it'll worth the hassle of a reinstallation (and if it could do something useful) or if the only thing to do is to drop the hard disk as far as possible... • Running computer from separate room

  I want my computer to be in the basement, but to use it on the first floor. Which cables should I run through the floor? Can some be wireless or other methods? Here are some of the options I've thought of: Basic: Run DVI, usb (mouse), usb (keyboard), and audio cable (4 cables) USB Hub option: Run DVI, and 1 usb, then using a usb hub split it into mouse, keyboard, maybe even audio (2-3 cables) HDMI Option: If I get a new video card and monitor that supports HDMI, would I be able to run both audio and video through it? Would the monitor have to have an audio out? Also there is a lot of extra bandwidth in the HDMI cables, could I send two monitors on 1 cable or would I have to use 2 cables? How about sending mouse/keyboard through the HDMI cable? I see a lot of monitors with USB hubs built in, but I assume I'd still have to wire HDMI + 1 USB cable to use the USB hubs? X Terminal Machine/Thin Client: I don't really know much about this option. Not sure if it would allow me to run graphics acceleration and watch movies, does anyone know more details about what this would allow me to do? Other options: Any other ways to do this? Can any of this be wireless?

I thought this would be a called a switch but I can only find ones with one input. Is there such a device that can do this? On my computer, I also have a dedicated graphics card (an Nvidia 310). No serious gaming stuff, I know - just for programming.   I am responsible for our companys server infrastructure at trade shows. We have 2 annual shows, 1 in Las Vegas and 1 in Amsterdam, so obviously our servers do quite a bit of travelling. Quite often, it gets home with pieces falling off, and insurance/rebuilding takes ages and cost a lot of money. For now I have been using a wooden rack-box, with steel-reinforced sides/corners, but I am looking for something tougher. Does anyone have experience with sending servers all around the world, without them dieing all the time?

• Why does my drive show as 180GB used, but copies only 40GB?

  My computer crashed, so I removed the drive (with Windows XP Professional 32-Bit) and put this drive in another computer running Windows 7 64-bit. Booting with Win7, when going to My Computer it is showing the XP drive as more than 180GB used. So as a quick backup, I'm trying to copy all the disk's content to a folder, but when I start copying, it's showing only 40 GB as the total size of the files to copy. I enabled showing system and hidden files in View options. What could be the problem?

• iPhone Docked Playing Through PC, Buzzing.

  Hi. I have an iPhone that I fit into an Apple dock. There is an audio cable from dock into the line in on my sound card. My headphones are plugged into the line out. I get this really quite buzz that is fairly constant, but changes as the iphone "does stuff". It's not so bad when the music is playing. But when it stops I get the buzz, so I can't really use my headphones as "noise cancellation." It doesn't help to change my volume sliders on the PC. Any ideas? Thanks in advance.

• Why does a hard disk suddenly look to Windows as if it "needs to be formatted"?

  This is more of a theory question, but what are the reason(s) for a disk to suddenly cause Windows to start saying it "needs to be formatted"? It happens to an IDE disk that I have in a cheap external enclosure, and I can usually get most of the data back by using software like recuva. It's now happened to an internal disk I have. I'm not looking for software to fix this (although links would be appreciated), but rather a low-level explanation as to what gets corrupted on the disk.

• Laptop freezing every few seconds, including screen + sound

  Just a few days ago, my Windows 7 HP dv4170us (1.76Ghz CPU, 1GB Ram) laptop started to freeze every other second where everything on screen and and sound (such as a song playing in iTunes) would just freeze until I bash it violently (without actually breaking the laptop) or wait for a couple of more seconds. I think it started one night when I noticed that a USB mouse of mine stopped working, and it displayed random "Device was not recognized" errors. I just unplugged the mouse and ignored it. Skip forward to the next day, is started freezing, and as of today I can't get my computer to not keep freezing. I tried to backup my files onto an external hdd, but it almost corrupted the drive. I ran 4 complete virus scans using MSSE and MalwareBytes (both quick and full scans), and they all came up clean. In the Task manager, the CPU usage is on a constant max, and so is the RAM (if I have just a few apps running, I only have like 30Mb of free RAM left). Also, on the outside of my laptop, right above where the CPU is located, it's very, very hot. I suspect that something is wrong internally within inside of the computer, but I'm not sure. It also does the same thing when booted into Ubuntu.Does anyone know what could be wrong with it?

• Client PC not booting when certain TFT plugged in - TFT or graphics card failure?

  here comes something quite strange: On a client machine (DELL Vostro 420) we experienced problems when booting: when turning on the machine beeps normal but doesn't display anything and doesn't boot. After some testing I found out, that this only happens if one (of the two) monitors (Iiyama ProLite E2472HDD) is plugged in while booting. If the other monitor (TFT 2) is plugged in everything is fine. Here a small illustration, TFT 1 is the bad guy: TFT 1 | TFT 2 | failure x | x | x x | | x | x | After BIOS-Phase I can safely plug in TFT 1 and everything works just fine. The question is, what can be done to avoide this behavior: Change monitor? (Iiyama ProLite E2472HDD) Change graphics card? (GeForce 9800 GT) Other suggestions?

• CPU Cores: The more the better?

  I currently have a dual-core processor at work and a quad-core at home. I've noticed both PCs are pretty equal as far as launching applications/surfing the web. The difference I can see is that my dual-core is 2.8GHz and my quad-core is 2.4GHz. Is it better to have a dual-core with a fast clock speed or a quad-core with a mediocre clock speed?
