• BAD DC transfering FSMO Roles to ADC

  I have a DC (FQDN:server.icmcpk.local) and an ADC (FQDN:file-server.icmcpk.local). Recently my DC is facing a bad sector problem so I changed the Operation Masters to file-server for all five roles. but when ever i turn off the OLD DC the file-server also stops wroking with AD and GPMC further i m also unable to join any other computer to this domain. For Test purpose i also added a new ADC (FQDN:wds-server.icmcpk.local) but no succes with the old DC off i had to turn the old DC on and then joined it. I m attaching the Dcdiags for all three servers. • Windows 7 locked out account

  I have a Win7 x64 computer. There was only one account (mine, created at installation, password protected, full administrative access with UAC enabled). To speed up the startup + login process I went to control userpasswords2 and unchecked that users need to enter password. By this operation my account has been changed to Guest type and an Administrator account has been created. This Administrator account has a small overlay icon with a downwards pointing arrow. My original password did not work; if I try leaving the password blank it says something like "Your account has been disabled. Contact your administrator." Contacting myself surprisingly did not help. As my account (which I am still able to access) is Guest, I have no rights to do anything. Is there a way to get my access back without reinstalling?

• How to use qcow2 disk image in Linux?

  I have a large qcow2 formatted disk image, which I use as storage. Often I need to move data to and from this disk image. I mount the disk using the qemu-nbd tool as follows: modprobe nbd max_part=63 qemu-nbd -c /dev/nbd0 /host/disk100G.img mount /dev/nbd0p1 /home/rup/disk But disk access fails every now and then in the midst of some I/O operation with an "Input/output error". At that point I have to manually unmount the disk and re-mount it so that I can run the program again: qemu-nbd -d /dev/nbd0 umount joborkhaki/ What could be the reason for this? Is there a better tool that I can use to maintain a qcow2 disk image?

• TRIM in centos 5.X?

  I've got a bunch of centos 5 boxes with Intel X-25 drives (x25-m in dev, x25-e in prod, I think). We're seeing severely degraded disk performance on one of our dev boxes (which easily does 5+ gb of writes every day, meaning we write the full drive's worth of data several times a month). The box in question: Intel x25-m Ext3 (which doesn't support TRIM) centos 5 vmware ESXi Wikipedia mentions that newer versions of hdparm (which centos5 doesn't include) can bulk-TRIM free blocks. This utility also sounds potentially useful: http://blog.patshead.com/2009/12/a-quick-and-dirty-wipersh-fix-for-intel-x25-m.html Disk write performance has dropped to <1 MB/sec while copying a 300 meg directory on this system, as of a month or so ago -- it used to be able to perform the same copy operation at least 5 times faster. What can I do to recover performance on this system?

• Moving files fails due to privileges but they seem to be OK

  I am trying to copy old files from an OS X 10.5.8 to a new external HD. When trying to copy a folder I get the message: The operation cannot be completed because you do not have sufficient privileges for some of the items. I've checked the privileges and they seem ok (read & write for me). What is curious is that the folder is created empty on the target drive and I can then copy the contents from inside the original folder to inside the new folder without changing anything else. This happens with several folders but not all and is making backup a pain. I have to figure out which folder broke the copy, copy its contents to the external disk and then select what hasn't been copied to copy (and eventually stop at some point and repeating the experience)

• IIS FTP Server works locally, but cannot connect from remote

  I'm trying to setup an FTP server on Windows 2008 Server. I can connect locally: C:\>ftp localhost Connected to WebHead1 220 Microsoft FTP Service However, when I try to connect from remote, it doesn't work: ~>ftp x.x.x.x ftp: Can't connect to `x.x.x.x': Operation timed out ftp: Can't connect to `x.x.x.x' I've tried everything I can think of with the settings. The FTP server is bound to all unassigned IPs and listening on port 21. I've also checked "FTP Server" in the firewall settings. Nothing appears in the FTP log files. I'm totally out of ideas!

• ASP.NET Security Exception when Switch IIS7 to Use UNC Path for Content

  I have a Windows Server 2008 R2 box running IIS7.5 with Medium Trust configured for ASP.NET. When I have the website running from local content (e.g.: c:\inetpub\wwwroot) everything works fine. When I change IIS to use a UNC path for the content (e.g.: \\computer\wwwroot) I get the following error: Security Exception Description: The application attempted to perform an operation not allowed by the security policy. To grant this application the required permission please contact your system administrator or change the application's trust level in the configuration file. Exception Details: System.Security.SecurityException: Request for the permission of type 'System.Data.SqlClient.SqlClientPermission, System.Data, Version=2.0.0.0, Culture=neutral, PublicKeyToken=b77a5c561934e089' failed. I'm trying to figure out why ASP.NET/IIS would allow for the SQL call when using local content but not when using a UNC path. Any ideas what I need to do to use a UNC path from IIS7 properly?

  I created an ASP.net MVC developed web application and I am trying to set up IIS. The Error: Http error 500.19, error code 0x80070005, Cannot read configuration file due to insufficient permissions, config file: C:\inetpub\wwwroot\BudgetManagerMain\BudgetManager\web.config If I set the AppPool to use 'administrator' i have no problems and can access the site just fine. If i set to NETWORK SERVICE (or anything else including self-created admin or non-admin user accounts), i get the above error. Things I have tried: identity for Application pool named 'test' is 'NetworkService' Set full access privs for wwwroot and all children files/folders verified effective permissions and NETWORK SERVICE has full access.   What is the proper procedure for distributing software updates using group policy's software installation feature? For example, if I want to install Java, and Java 1.7u6 is already added as a package, should I: A) Remove the Java 1.7u6 package (selecting the "allow users to continue to use" option), and add Java 1.7u7? B) Add Java 1.7u7 and specify that it is an update to the existing 1.7u6 package? (Will this install the oldest version first, then install each update one after the other, or will it just install the latest package?) Note that this question is geared toward the operation of the software installation feature of group policy, not specifically the behavior of the Java installers.   Some days ago I installed an Ubuntu server and two running virtual machines with libvirt. Everything works fine except one performance problem. Everytime when I call a PHP script with directory operations the operations are very slow and not performant. The virtual machine uses 6 cores (8 are available) and 7500 megabytes RAM (8 Gigabyte are available). The disk image format is qcow2. How can I improve the performance?

  I have two wireless interfaces wlan0, wlan1 I want wlan0 to be connected to the internet via a wireless router and I want wlan1 to be in AP mode acting as a router to give internet access to whoever connectes to it. So basically all packets coming through wlan1 should be forwarded to wlan0 = Router = Internet. That's including DNS/DHCP/etc.. • Microsoft Entourage/Exchange Server problem: all objects disappeared from server - still in some form on the client

  One of our employees works with Entourage on his MacBook Pro (OSX 10.6) accessing Exchange Server 2007. Last Friday morning, I think while working over a VPN, Entourage (I think it was Entourage) deleted all his objects (mail, calendar, contacts) on the server and while creating a lot of strange folders (starting with underscores) on the client. The local data seems to be there, but not in a consistent form. Since the user's mailbox is rather big, I suspect, that there was some kind of "move" operation which did not complete. I tried to export the data, but the export stops because of a corrupted object. Is there a tool or another way to export or retrieve the local data? Edit - FYI: we solved the problem getting his data from the previous night's backup.

• Windows XP computer can't see Windows 7 shares

  I am building a network containing notably a laptop running XP and a computer running Windows 7. Both computer have shared folders and the 7 has a shared printer, to which another laptop running 7 is able to print. If I attempt to see the laptop's network shares on the PC, everything works perfectly: I am able to see and enter the folders. The reverse operation however doesn't work. Xp doesn't see the Windows 7 PC. Other things to note: As mentioned above, another Windows 7 computer is able to see the printer and I can ping both computers from either PC. Both computers are in the same workgroup named ALLAITEMENT Password-protected shares are turned off on the PC. The 7 Computer uses 40/56 bit encryption The Windows XP laptop has SP3

• Pure-FTPd linux upload problems - 500 Unknown command

  I'm running Centos with Kloxo CP and PureFTPd on VPS based on HyperVM. The problem - during the day, there are periods when FTP wors fine for hours, but sometimes it dies with "500 Unknown command" code. for files larger than 2Kb. This is really weird - with files less than 2472-2484 bytes everything would work fine, but with bigger files ftp would start writing file, would drop on 2Kb and would return "500 Unknown command" . This happens on Passive AND/OR Active connections for any filetypes. Logs are showing like the file was uploaded successfully , but the speed nearby the action would be 0.3 -0.5 Kb , when normal operation would report 70-150Kb/s speeds. I do have some Iptables firewalls on both HyperVM host,and VPS , however these are static, and most of the time it works just fine. Any suggestions on where to look for a solution would be appreciated :)

Also anybody knows whether 4 cells means 4 times 24 Wh, or 24 Wh in total?

• Keeps "SSH timeout" error in our AWS instance- how do i diagnose?

  I am befuddled by this error. We keep failing to SSH into our AWS instance, whether it is is deployment or via console. I have tried rebooting a few times, but it does not seem to be helping. Here are a couple of error messages i keep getting. connection failed for: HOST.NAME.amazonaws.com (Errno::ETIMEDOUT: Operation timed out - connect(2)) 111.222.333.444: ssh connection failed at 2010-07-02 03:39:37 I also SSHed in when it was up, and monitored "top" when ssh times out. looking at the memory logs, it does not look like any program was hogging

• CalDAV : request error problem

  We have an xserve which hosts our internal calendars through CalDAV. Personally have 4 calendars from the server set to show in my iCal. Frequently throughout the day at random moments I will get the below error. If I hit ignore, it will just continue to work without any issues. This is more of an annoyance then anything (the dock icon jumping all the time). I have full permission to read anything, so it is not an actual permission issue. Anyone know what might be the issue?   I'm trying to set up a test LDAP-server for some developers but I'm running into some trouble. service slapd start errors so I run /usr/sbin/slapd -d 1 and this gives me the following error at the end: unable to open pid file "/var/run/ldap/slapd.pid": 13 (Permission denied) slapd destroy: freeing system resources. slapd stopped. The rights for /var/run/ldap are as follows: root@pec:/var/run/ldap# ls -ld drwxr-xr-x 2 openldap openldap 60 2012-07-04 20:45 So I don't get why there is still a permission denied.   Hi, I am running SQL server 2008 developer edition on windows vista home premium. I created a reporting services project that was built successfully in BIDS. When I try to deploy it it gives the following error: Error rsAccessDenied : The permissions granted to user 'COMP\MYSELF' are insufficient for performing this operation. The MYSELF account is the only account on the system. It has administrator rights. The reporting service is running with the LocalSystem service account. If I log in with the MYSELF account into reportmanager, I cannot see the site settings tab. Without the site settings tab, how do I add or change the roles for MYSELF account. In summary, please help me to open the reportmanager in the browser with the site settings link so that I can change the role of the user account.

• Removing connections to network printers that no longer exist

  I'm trying to delete some network printer connections from a Windows Server 2003 (SP2) machine because the printer shares no longer exist. Windows shows the printers' status as "Printer not found on server, unable to connect"; this is expected; the printers are now on a different server. Only one machine ever connected to the printer shares; it no longer needs to and I'd like to clean it up. However, when I try to delete the connections, I get an error message: --------------------------- Remove Printer --------------------------- Printer connection cannot be removed. Operation could not be completed. --------------------------- OK --------------------------- The "solutions" I've found online seem to be more voodoo than anything (and they still don't work!). Does anybody know how I can delete these long-gone printers?

  Hello I recently installed CSF firewall and have made live a new server which is accepting around 600req/second. Its basically a reverse proxy and I found in pingdom and munin that for a particular time, the response times of the server increased by 3 folds. • Computer crashes and won't start, LED indicator blinks slowly

  I have a MSI K8NGM2-FID motherboard coupled with a AMD Athlon 3700+ and an Antec TPII-550 power supply. The computer crashes at random times in operation, sometimes taking a while to crash, and sometimes crashing right after Windows XP shows the desktop after boot. The CPU temperature is always in the safe range, usually 30-33 degrees Celsius, and swapping the RAM has not done anything, so the crashes aren't cause by the RAM. What could be causing this? If the motherboard were fried, would the computer even boot at all? What causes inconsistent crashing of the computer? After the computer crashes, the LED power indicator blinks about once a second, and the computer does not respond to the power button. This behavior continues until the computer's power supply is completely removed.

• Terse, documented, correct way to create Kerberos-backed user shares in Greyhole

  As a migration strategy away from Windows Home Server (which is currently out of support and intractable for our needs, for a variety of reasons), our little cloister of nerds has targeted Greyhole for our shared use at home. Despite the documentation's terseness, getting the system set up for simple, single-user operation isn't especially difficult, but this scenario fails to service our needs. Among other highlights of the system, we're attempting to emulate Integrated Windows Authentication (with Kerberos) and single-user shares to keep the Windows users in the house happy and well-supported. I'm aware of the underlying systems that go into Greyhole and understand how to set up per-user shares in Samba, but the documentation doesn't seem to support cases for Greyhole to sop up these directories as separate landing zones for replication. Enter my question: are both of these cases (IWA user authentication and user-partitioned personal shares) supported by Greyhole? If so, please cite or link the supporting documentation if it exists.
