• What are the differences between programming languages? [closed]

  Once upon a time, I heard from someone the only difference between programming languages is the syntax I wanted to deny it - to say that there are other fundamental aspects that truly set a language apart from others than just syntax. But I couldn't... So, can you? Whenever I search Google for something like "differences between programming languages", the results tend to be debates between two specific languages (I'd like something more general) - however, some of the aspects that people seemed to debate the most were: Object-Oriented Method/Operator overloading (I actually see this rather related to syntax) Garbage-Collection (While it seems like a good difference, for some reason it doesn't seem that "fundamental") What important aspects other than syntax can you think of?

• vps running out of memory, 200MB free

  At the beginning of this year I took a VPS for my website because I was running against the resource limits from a shared hosting. Here are the things I know: 2GB memory, with 1GB swap Debian X64 server ED installed Software running on the webserver: mysql apache postfix pop3 imap amavisd clamd cron fail2ban munin-node pure-ftpd spamd nginx Now for the setup: Nginx listens on port 80 and handles the static files, the php side is done by apache2 running mod_php in combi with apc(no var caching!). Iam using a pretty 'busy' drupal and phpbb stack on the server, for drupal iam using boost and authcache to handle of the server load with a pressflow stack. phpbb is just phpbb3 with some mods installed, but has at max 30 users online at a time.. The problem is that its staring to use the swap after a few days after a reboot and thus the site becomes slower. I'v added pictures of monit and munin, so maybe somebody can help me out...   I saw this bit of code on an old forum post: SSLRequire %{HTTP_HOST} =~ m"\.secure\.powweb\.com" And I was just wondering what the =~ and m" ... " meant. I've been searching online and in the Apache documentation for any mention of the equal-sign tilde operator, but I've found no mention of it. I know that some directives can take a tilde to use a regular expression, but I've never seen the m" ... " form used before. What exactly is that m" ... " for? Where else would you see this form?

• Simple mail server setup for a user-based website.

  I am working on a simple website that has user registration. All I need to do is confirm email addresses by emailing a confirmation email and maybe send out periodic emails regarding various information. I am also considering having a [email protected] email for user questions and comments. The application is written in django and I am running it on ArchLinux on a VPS. I have no knowledge of mail servers. I tried setting up postfix and qmail but had no luck. They are complicated and require a lot of configuration to get them working properly. My use case is super simple and doesn't not require anything fancy. Is there any simple mailing setup that will enable me to quickly get emailing working with my django app with minimal work?

• Do I need the 'w' component in my Vector class?

  Assume you're writing matrix code that handles rotation, translation etc for 3d space. Now the transformation matrices have to be 4x4 to fit the translation component in. However, you don't actually need to store a w component in the vector do you? Even in perspective division, you can simply compute and store w outside of the vector, and perspective divide before returning from the method. For example: // post multiply vec2=matrix*vector Vector operator*( const Matrix & a, const Vector& v ) { Vector r ; // do matrix mult r.x = a._11*v.x + a._12*v.y ... real w = a._41*v.x + a._42*v.y ... // perspective divide r /= w ; return r ; } Is there a point in storing w in the Vector class?

• Intermittent apt-get 'no installation candidate' error on fabric deploy

  I'm experiencing a strange issue with a fabric script I'm using to bootstrap a server on EC2. I launch a stock Ubuntu 12.04 AMI, wait for it to start, then proceed with: with settings(host_string="ubuntu@%s" % i.dns_name, connection_attempts=30): sudo('apt-get -qy update') sudo('apt-get -qy install --no-install-recommends mdadm') # don't install postfix #etc... The apt-get update appears to run fine and gives no errors, however (2/3 of the time or so) installing mdadm throws a "no installation candidate" error. When I ssh into the server and run apt-get install mdadm I get the same error. Running apt-get update by hand, then the package installs fine. Any ideas on what might be happening, or ideas for debugging?

  Which is more common, creating a new variable versus assigning an existing variable (field, array element etc - anything that syntactically uses the assignment operator)? The reason I ask is that I'm designing a new language, and wondering which of these two operations should get the shorter syntax. It's not intended to be a pure functional language, or the question wouldn't arise, so I'd ideally like to count usage across large existing code bases in procedural and object-oriented languages like C, C++ and Java, though as far as I can see there isn't an easy way to do this automatically, and going by memory and eyeball, neither is obviously more common than the other.

  The rule of 3 (the rule of 5 in the new c++ standard) states : If you need to explicitly declare either the destructor, copy constructor or copy assignment operator yourself, you probably need to explicitly declare all three of them. But, on the other hand, the Martin's "Clean Code" advises to remove all empty constructors and destructors (page 293, G12:Clutter) : Of what use is a default constructor with no implementation? All it serves to do is clutter up the code with meaningless artifacts. So, how to handle these two opposite opinions? Should empty constructors/destructors really be implemented?

Specifically, I have numerous buttons that will be changing color based on state information from operator input and input from various subcomponents and sensors. I would like to use UML or some other type of design diagrams to be able to capture the color transition. Some folks have suggested sequence diagrams, but I haven't been able to find any good examples that show how to incorporate this design artifact. I would really like to head in this direction to help developers. Thanks a ton for feedback and insights.

This simple "DOMNodeList grouper" illustrate many little dilemmas: use iterator_to_array or "populate an array", when not all items need to be copied. use clone operator, cloneNode method or import method? use parentNode::method() or documentElement::method? (see here) first removeChild or first replaceChild, no avoids "side effects"? ... My position, today, is only "do an arbitrary choice and follow it in all implementations" (like a "Convention over configuration" principle)... But, there are another considerations? • Debian 6 or CentOS 6 - which one is easiest for latest versions of Ruby and Postgres?

  I am getting a new server as I've messed up my current box, while trying to install Postgres 9 (on my CentOS 5.8 box). To cut a long story short, I removed postgres but yum decided to remove virtualmin-base as well, which broke my virtualmin install (postfix/dovcot stopped working). Virtualmin advise a fresh install once virtualmin-base has been removed/reinstalled. So I'll probably make a decision based on this simple criteria: which distro out of the two makes it easiest for installing the latest versions of Ruby and Postgres? They are both equally respected as web servers, so I really don't mind either way - I just want to use the one that will work best with the software I need.

• Sending Emails from existing SMTP host from Ubuntu Server

  I feel like my problem is very simple, but I've been trying for quite some time and haven't cracked it. You experienced server guys will probably laugh at this, but I'm finally at the point I need help or I'll never get anywhere. I have a little box running 12.04 LTS and I've wanted to script some status checks and have the server send me an email and schedule this with cron. I basically want a command line mail client that I can set up as easily as Thunderbird to send through my existing SMTP through the command line. Something that can easily be rolled into my bash scripts. I already have a remote host handling our email, SMTP, MTA, all that garbage. I don't particularly want to set up a relay just to send email when I have one that everyone else in the company already uses. I've tried, but there are too many aspects I don't understand AND I don't see why I should set up something local when we already pay for a remote host to do these things. If I absolutely have to set up sendmail or postfix, then so be it, but I'd appreciate a simple alternative. I'm open to practically anything at this point.

• Spambot Infection Detection

  My server has been blocked by CBL for participating in curtwail spambot. Initially we suspected that it was coming from a PC and not from the server, but the router is blocking all packets on 25 except those coming from the server. I have just executed the tcpdump command and every 5 minutes I see a flurry of activity on port 25 that is very suspicious and I am sure that there is some process running on the server: 13:02:30.027436 IP exprod5og110.obsmtp.com.53803 > ubuntu.local.smtp: Flags [S], seq 171708781, win 5744, options [mss 1436,sackOK,TS val 3046699707 ecr 0,nop,wscale 2], length 0 I have stopped postfix, and yet there is still traffic on port 25 above. But how can I find what process is actually communicating on port 25 as it only rund for a few seconds and so for example lsof -i :25 will never catch it. I have been working on this now for 2 days, it is a live server and I cannot simply shut it down, any suggestion on how I can detect the source of this email bot process ?

• Simple Central Storage for HA mail server

  Hi Everyone, I will have 2 Postfix servers. One will be a backup of the other. What is the easiest method to provide central storage to both of these boxes? My infrastructure is very simple: Just a lot of Xen hosts, so there is no SAN or anything. Each Xen host does have RAID1 though. I don't mind mounting NFS shares on each of those mail servers, as long as the NFS server wasn't a single point of failure. Is there such a thing as redundant NFS? • After deleting log files, Ubuntu server still saying there is no space

  My Ubuntu server has stopped due to a lack of disk space. I deleted some log files which has grown huge very quickly. But df -h still shows I have no space left. When I run du -sh /* I can see that I should have plenty of disk space left after deleting the logs. I ran lsof +L1 and it brought up two files: /var/log/mail.log and /var/log/mail.err. These are two logs I had deleted. I restarted apache, postfix and mysql (mysql wont restart because of lack of disk space, it think) but still df -h shows no space.

  I have a website, and the users recommend via email to another persons, so the mail come from my site, but I need to appear the user as sender, but "via" mydomain. The logically and what lists management software and companies do is differ the "MAIL FROM" SMTP command and the "From" header (like mailchimp, for example). So I want to DKIM sign a mail with mydomain.com, even if the From header says another domain. is possibly this? I am using postfix with Debian GNU/Linux, and in this case using dkim-filter and dk-filter.

• OS X Leopard (10.5) Server -- Unwanted Emails

  Our OS X Leopard (10.5) server is sending out an email EVERY DAY for a Disk Full Notification on an external HDD we use for Time Machine backups (which manages it's own disk space, so the disk full notifications are useless). In the Server Admin app, under Settings Notifications, there's this: which is clearly disabled. The email header and message: http://pastebin.com/V5PZ3Phk I've been told to check the mail.log, but it's mostly empty (except for a few logs in 2011 saying "Postfix mail system is not running". I've also been told to check the crontabs, but I'm not sure how to do that on OS X (or any OS for that matter). Can someone explain how to do this? Also, if there's any other suggestions on places/things/etc to look at/for, my ears are all open!

• Need hosting (e-mail, http) for external domains

  This may not be the right place, but since it is a more technical aspect of the hosting world, I am taking the liberty to ask: I'm currently running a virtual server with nginx and postfix for web and e-mail, but I can't handle the administration and, due to frequent problems with e-mail services, I need to resolve this with a almost-standard hosting package (anything should work, even 5 MB static files would be OK). The exception being that I would like to use several domains, hosted with different registrars, for web and e-mail. Currently, this is a very simple configuration in my setup. All hosters I have looked at seem to think this a costly business (more than domain registration costs), but of course the recommend to transfer domains to them (they want the $$). Does anyone know of a hosting company that allows its customers to freely manage domains registered somewhere else?

Or rarely use in the development of software? Like read/write content of CPU registers may useful in debugging programs.
