  • Why do packages fail to install from command line

    - by calebB
Every once in a while I can't install packages in Ubuntu 11.04. I'll try to run the software center and it and it will pop up then disappear. If I call it from the command line it says it seg-faults. And then trying to install anything from the command line I get this: sudo apt-get install pdftk Reading package lists... Done And thats all I get for anything I try. Usually restarting fixes the problem but its very annoying.

  • Are there any conceptual drawbacks to building a web app with C++ and MySQL?

    - by jnthnclrk
I've inherited a pretty interesting project where there is a good opportunity to take an existing piece of software and turn it into a SaaS web app. As the project is inherited, the code base/ framework is already defined as C++ and MySQL. The app itself is compiled and run as an EXE on Windows Server. The UI is web based and the app works as a kind of server. From what I do know of modern web apps, this is perhaps an unusual choice. These days, most people seem to opt for a PHP framework or Ruby on Rails. Certainly that is the impression I get from reading blogs on the subject. So, I'm very interested to know if a C++ EXE backed by MySQL is a solid foundation for a web app, or whether we should be looking to build in another way?

  • What makes a good software developer? [closed]

    - by David Johnstone
Previously there have been questions on what makes a good team lead and what makes a good programming team, but I can't find any questions on what makes a good programmer. I believe the answer to this question is especially important in the context of hiring. Hiring the best people you can afford only works when you are able to identify who the best people are. Being able to consistently identify the best people is only possible when you know what makes the best people the best people. The easy answer is "smart and gets things done" (see "Done, and Gets Things Smart" for an interesting response). But surely there is more to being a good software developer than this aphorism. So, what makes a good software developer a good software developer? (Note: For the purposes of this question, I'm not interested in how to actually tell if somebody is a good software developer.)

  • .NET Reactor - How to Protect 64-bit Assemblies

    - by Cocowalla
I have build 64-bit (x64) versions of some assemblies and am trying to obfuscate them with .NET Reactor, which claims to have 64-bit support. However, even if I disable all protection and locking options .NET Reactor is always producing 32-bit assemblies! Does anyone know how to get .NET Reactor to produce 64-bit assemblies?

  • Software development working from home

    - by johnhilbron
Hi, Do you all think that working from home is the wave of the future for software development? In this day and age it seems like a logical next step for software developers to work from their homes and connect to each other using IM, video chat and phone. Etc, etc... What forces are in action pushing software development in this direction? What forces are keeping more people from working remotely? John

  • difficulty based time estimation software

    - by Frankie
Some months ago I found a project-management / time-estimation software that would ask you to sort out your tasks in terms of difficulty (1, 2 or 3) and would then estimate the time you would take to deploy. The system would auto-adapt as you were working. I've forgot the software name. For the past days I've been digging emails and searching Google with no results. Can anyone pin the software name by my description? Its not http://www.fogcreek.com (though I've found it to be a great piece of software. Thank you in advance.

  • Community License Agreement for Commercial (SaaS) software?

    - by indomitablehef
I've got a commercial SaaS application, an online collaboration/lean project mgmt tool. I want to offer a "Community Edition", with specific limitations on how the software can be used, for free. For example free for groups using it to manage open source projects free to K-12 teachers to use in the classroom free for authors collaborating on Lean/Kanban/AgileSoftwareDevelopment books and research papers. free for community conference organizers, user group organizers, etc. The license would grant use of the software with limitations. The software itself can enforce limitations on the number of users/projects. I'm looking for a license agreement / EULA that I can use to specify what uses the software can be used for (see above). It would restrict the users from using it in different ways, such as for commercial use, managing consulting projects, client work, etc. I've been combing the web for good examples of such agreements, and so far coming up short. Any ideas? To be clear, this would not be an open source license of any kind. It would cover the use of commercial software, for specific "community" uses, as we define them.

  • best analogy to explain free software floss to non geeks

    - by opensas
How do you explain free libre open source software to a computer illiterate guy? Two well known analogies I've often heard are: free software as a meal recipe, a set of instructions for you to inspect, learn, put into practice, and improve... versus a canned meal that you can only swallow without even knowing what you're eating... and the other is comparing privative software to a car that you aren't allowed to open it's trunk to see inside in case anything goes wrong... I'd like to know what other analogies you know that might help us explain free software to non geeks saludos sas

  • turning open source software into a consulting business ?

    - by sofreakinghigh
just some general and specific questions about running a business which uses open source software and sells training, services, and other value added solutions utilizing the open source asset(s). 1) how much modification do you need to make to an existing open source software/framework to give a new brand ? open source (GPLv3) branding issues here.... for ex) Mambo and Joomla, i think they are pretty much same ? but they have different labels. 2) Is there a disadvantage of promoting open source software/framework/suite in hopes of selling value added services and solutions on top of the Open source asset ? 3) can Open source assets be marketing point for lowered Total Ownership Cost and transparency ? meaning, clients will not be using some mysterious, opaque proprietary asset ? 4) is competition fierce? cost of developing software is non existing because you are using an open source asset. barrier to entry is minimal ??

  • Need Ontology of software engineering terms

    - by v.rekha
I'm trying to implement a Question Answering System based on software engineering ontology. This is a [class/university?] project; it will use the java language. Can you please help me locate software engineering ontologies i.e. ontologies [or even taxonomies / folksonomies ?] that include words and concepts found in the domain of Software Engineering. Editor's note: I took the liberty of rewriting this question. It was initially poorly worded and being misunderstood was closed. Maybe it can be reopen, for it is programming related and of interest to some SO contributors. According to this dupe: the poster is looking for an OWL resource: quote, "I need software engineering ontology.owl file."

Is there any existing software which can help enforce code review process like below: Dev user commit their changeset with proper comments, but the changeset does not goes into subversion repository directly, it will be pending in a "review software". Reviewer can see all pending changesets in the "review software", review the changeset and decide whether to allow the change into the code trunk. • Is there a good argument for software patents?

    - by David Nehme
Now that it looks like software patents are going to be severely limited, does anyone have a good argument for keeping them. It seems like copyright law serves software fine and patents just add overhead to what should be an almost frictionless process. Are there any examples of software that wouldn't have been written if not for patents?

  • Creating managed file transfer software in java

    - by Shekhar
Hello, I have been asked to do some POC on how we can provide a software solution which will be able to manage files. Manage files means it will be able to move files from source to destination servers. The client gave us 4 page document detailing what sort of software they are looking for. They dont want to use existing commercial softwares. They want to build their own customizable software. Has anybody worked on this type of project? Please provide your inputs on how should i approach this project. The software should be platform independent and should be built in java.

I need to write medical program to manage medical practices (patient records, appointments, prescription, etc). Note that this is not for US practices so US EMRs will not work. What is the best platform to develop the software in ie. language and database? Considerations include: - Integration with the web - will need to have Doctors download updates to the software from the web. Will also post reports from the software unto webpages - The software will include a mobile application - probably for Blackberry - Cost is a big factor - need to minimize the license cost to the users - Need tight security on the program

  • Apple Mac Software Development

    - by MattMorgs
I'm planning on developing an Apple Mac application which will collect hardware information from the host Mac and also installed software info. The hardware and software info will be collected in an encrypted XML file and then posted back to a website. The application should run as a "service" or background process on the Mac and can be configured to collect the data on a frequent basis defined by another encrypted XML config file. I've done plenty of Windows based software development but never on the Mac. Can anybody point me in the direction of any useful info on how to develop on the Mac, collect hardware and software info, export to an XML file, file encryption and packaging a compiled app to run as a service? Is either Objective C, Cocoa or Ruby a possible option? Many thanks for your help in advance!

  • What license to use for translations of open source software

    - by vividos
I'm writing an open source software that is licensed under the GPL. Now I'm offering that other users can translate the software, starting from an english translation I made by myself. What license or range of license may be best for translation of text strings, dialogs, etc.? As GPL is a software license, I thought about a Creative Commons license. The goal is so that all translations remain free and may be updated by other translators.
