  • Can I use a 27" iMac as a additional monitor for another 27" iMac?

    I currently have a 27" iMac i7 with the 512mb ATI card. After looking at prices on other Apple displays it appears I can purchase another low-end 27" iMac (Core 2 Duo basic model) for less than a 30" display. 3 Part question: Can I easily use the lower-end iMac as an additional monitor to my higher end iMac? While I am using the lower-end iMac as an additional monitor can I still take advantage of its CPU to do things like run a webserver, compress video with Handbrake, etc? Are there any other 27" LCD displays with the same resolution (2560 x 1440) cheaper than the basic iMac (~$1699.00 US)? Any insights appreciated.

  • Getting a VMnet0 error in VMWare workstation after updating host computer from Windows 8 to 8.1

    Yesterday, I updated my computer from Windows 8 to 8.1. I have VMWare Workstation 10 running Windows XP on this computer and prior to the update I had no issues connecting to my network. However, since updating, I haven't been able to connect to any network and I'm getting the following error: "The network bridge on device VMnet0 is not running. The firtual machine will not be able to communicate with the host or with other machines on your network. Failed to connect virtual device Ethernet0" I've checked all of my settings which currently have my network adapter set for a bridged connection and under device status "connected" is checked. Not really sure where to go from here, but after doing some research I have seen that others users have reported getting this error when updating the OS (any OS, not windows 8 specifically) of the host computer. Thanks in advance to anyone who can help.

    There seems to be a lack of good information around this particular Google Apps error code. Has anyone found common environmental information that causes this error? Any kind of solution? Uninstalling/re-installing Google Sync doesn't seem to do anything, I've run Outlook's executable that scans/fixes the PST file etc. Task 'Google Apps - ::user email address:: - Sending' reported error (0x8004010B) : 'Unknown Error 0x8004010B' I found a listing of error codes for the Gdata API but nothing for these types of 'unknown' error codes. Does Google have available a list of common 'unknown' error codes/messages? Thanks in advance.

    I just upgraded to Ubuntu 10.4 from 9.10, and it's now hiding the hibernate and suspend options. How do I get them back? So the way you do this is make sure that your swap partition is in /etc/fstab and swap is enabled, and big enough. Look at /proc/swaps to see if anything is listed. Now I'm getting this error when I boot after suspending: init: ureadahead-other main process (705) terminated with status 4 Does anyone know how to fix this? I'm using Ubuntu with kernel 2.6.32-22-generic.

  • With Ubuntu Linux (10+), how do I connect to remote to my machine from Windows

    I tried to to remote into my Ubuntu machine. I enabled the setting on Ubuntu and that side seems to work. But I get a connection time out when I use RealVNC on the Windows box. I believe it is a firewall issue. I disabled the firewall for that application on Windows but I don't know how to check if the firewall is enabled on the windows machine. I am on a local network with a router. Ideally, I would want to block that remote control port at the Internet level/router level but "enable" that port on the Windows box and the Ubuntu box. How do I check those settings.

    Is there any way to change the default mouse cursor on OSX Mavericks? More precisely, I'd like to make it look like in windows, and even more precisely I want to move the 'point' where the mouse cursor actually 'clicks' - on windows it's on the very end of the arrow, even outside of it, and on mac it's a little inside the arrow. I've done some research, and all the websites either tell me to get Mighty Mouse, which doesn't work on my system, and other's tell me how to change the size of my cursor.

    I picked up an ASUS EEE 1101HA with Windows 7 and installed UBUNTU 10.4 Netbook Remix (dual boot). Ubuntu runs fine, but it doesn't recognize that the notebook LCD is 1388x768 and thus only offers 1024x768 and 800x600 as monitor resolution. So .. how can I tell it about that higher resolution? (Have root pwd & vi, una-bash-ed to use both.. )

  • SSD -- Special settings for SSD as secondary drive?

    Hello all, I recently purchased an Intel SSD (X25-V 40GB) and I want to add it to my PC as a secondary drive (not the boot/system drive) so I can install specific software to it. Now, do I need to do anything special to ensure long life and peak performance with this as a secondary drive? I have Windows 7 Pro. by the way. All the literature I can find covers the use of a SSD as a boot/system drive under Windows 7, but I don't want to run it like that (I have my reasons). I'm wondering if things like TRIM still work if you don't use the SSD as the boot/system drive. If TRIM and the like still works, do I have to do anything special in order to enable it for my particular setup? Thanks.

  • Is there a good Lotus Notes open-source alternative?

    At my work we use Lotus Notes 6.5 for our email, meeting scheduling and instant messaging. I can't stand the horrible UI, buggy meeting scheduling and overall '90s feel when using it and would love to replace it with open-source alternatives. So far I've been able to setup Thunderbird for email, and I should also be able to configure pidgin to do IM, but I can't find any replacement for the meeting scheduling. I need to be able to receive meeting requests and respond to them. I've looked around trying to get the Thunderbird plugin Lightning to manage the scheduling, but everything I've read so far requires me to export .ics files from Lotus Notes or otherwise keep Lotus Notes around for day-to-day activities. I've also looked into using Evolution as the client, but I found even less information for it than I did for Thunderbird. How can I easily send, receive and respond to Lotus Notes meetings using an open-source alternative? Alternatively, if there exists a full drop-in replacement to Lotus Notes I would also consider it. Note: My desktop at work is a Windows XP machine, though I wouldn't be opposed to a solution requiring cygwin at this point. Edit: I have no power over the server. I only want a compatible client.

  • getting a pyserial not loaded error

    I'm getting a "pyserial not loaded" error with the python script fragment below (running OSX 10.7.4). I'm trying to run a python app called Myro for controlling the Parallax Scribbler2 robot - figured it would be a fun way to learn a bit of Python - but I'm not getting out of the gate here. I've searched out all the Myro help docs but like a lot in-progress open source programs, they are a moving target and conflicting, out of date, or not very specific about OSX. I have MacPorts installed and installed py27-serial without error. MacPorts lists the python versions I have installed, along with the active version: Available versions for python: none python24 python25 python25-apple python26 python26-apple python27 python27-apple (active) python32 Perhaps stuff is getting installed in the wrong places or my PATH is wrong (I don't much know what I am doing in Terminal and have probably screwed something up).     I'm trying to install the Shrew VPN client. In the process of installation an error occurs: Error 0x800f0203: Couldn't install the network component. It occurs when the installer tries to execute C:\Program Files\ShrewSoft\VPN Client\netcfg.exe -add service vflt C:\Program Files\ShrewSoft\VPN Client\drivers\vfilter.inf Antivirus, firewall, etc are disabled and I'm running as an administrator. I've installed vfilter.inf manually, but it leads nowhere. I have a similar situation with the Cisco VPN client. I need a VPN client supports group authorization, and imports the settings from pcf format. Windows Vista 32-bit, Shrew client 2.1.5, also try 2.0.0 for 32-bit.

    Does anyone know if XAMPP's Perl also provides Tk support? Does anyone know of a similar stack which provides PostresSQL in addition to/instead of MySQL? I'd like this to run on Win 7 and XP. Edit: I do know I could install the other components I want "by hand", for example getting Tk from CPAN, I'd just prefer to get everything at one time if possible.

    Are there any alternatives to web of trust for chrome and firefox. Because I found out that Wot doesn't always ask you if you want to access a dangerous site or not. While I was browsing a while ago for a curriculum vitae template. I saw this image on google that looks like one. I click it but then it brought me to a site with a red mark in Wot, and wot doesn't even bother to inform me first that the site is dangerous. Do you know of any alternatives?

    Is it possible to create another audio device and redirect only wanted input streams to it? Here's my concrete problem: I am broadcasting a game via XFire and it uses the Windows audio device to capture any audio I receive. As I am broadcasting, other users who watch the video stream are communicating with me over Skype, and they hear themselves back within the video stream and it is entirely logical since I am broadcasting the audio I hear. What I want to do is create another audio device within Windows and redirect (pipe) ONLY the audio input from that game and not the input reveived from Skype. I would then tell XFire to use that newly created "virtual" audio device to broadcast and therefore my partners won't hear themselves back. Is there any software that can do that or can it be achieved natively with Windows? (I am under Windows 7).

    I’ve been trying everything; this is the last chance I have. I moved folders and files from an old Windows Server 2003 File Server to a new FS (Win Server 2008 R2) with DFS and ABE enabled. Now, a specific Shared Excel file is driving me crazy, out of a sudden, lots of times per day, users are getting the following error while opening that file: Filename.xlsx is locked for editing by ‘another user’. Open ‘Read-Only’ or, click ‘Notify’ to open.. I’ve already followed this, with no joy: http://blogs.technet.com/b/the_microsoft_excel_support_team_blog/archive/2012/05/14/the-definitive-locked-file-post.aspx In any case, I strongly think this is not client-related, since it never gave that problem in the past with Windows Server 2003.   • Looking for definitive answer to accessing a network drive/NAS/SMB drive via Windows 7 HOME and Windows 7 Professional. Is it possible and how?

    I want to be able to access my Lacie 2Big network drive in Windows 7 Explorer. I have a machine with Windows 7 Home and one with Windows 7 Professional. Neither Windows 7, home or pro, can access the drive. The Windows 7 Home machine displays the drive in its Explorer, with the capacity, but on clicking the icon, I get another window, blank with the busy pointer which does not eventually stop. The drive is working perfectly. How do I know this? Because I can access it with no problems on my Apple Mac, Windows XP home and Ubuntu machines on the same network as the Windows 7 machines. Except for the Windows XP home machine that required Lacie ethernet agent program, the Mac and the Ubuntu machines needed no setup, the drive appeared like any other drive. So my 2 questions: Is it possible to access a network share drive, e.g. a NAS like Lacie 2big in Windows 7 Home Premium and Windows 7 Professional. If so how? I read on Microsoft's own forums and elsewhere that network sharing drives, e.g. via SambaSMB is NOT possible on Windows 7 Home.   • Disassemble Asus A2500H

    I have an aged Asus A2500H notebook, with a broken screen and damage to the outside. Since it has a TV-out connection, and is working good otherwise, I have it hooked up to my television as a kind of media-center to play video over LAN. I want to remove the screen as cleanly as possible, but am having trouble opening up the laptop. I've been able to remove the (broken) hinges the screen pivots on. I've also removed any other screws I could spot, but still the casing doesn't come off and seems to be attached by yet more screws I can't access (yet). I've been searching the web for disassemble instructions, I've found some for a number of other brands and models, but not for the Asus A2500H.
