  • How to find the Fastest DNS servers to host our domain?

    The question was born because lately we've seen a pretty odd (well, at least for us, for the first time) - error message in Google webmaster tools - "DNS lookup timeout" ... I was pretty sure that with eNom's 5 DNS servers (dns1... to dns5.name-services.com) we're pretty set... But it appears that from (Europe/Hungary), for example - dns1.name-services.com takes 170ms. to respond on a ping... while GoDaddy's ns75.domaincontrol.com - takes only 40 ms. to respond... and at the same time - dns2 to dns5.name-services.com - each result with a timeout error (on ping)... This issue came to our attention right in the final stages of optimizing our web-site (almost to death) - basically, just in time... I would love to move our domains to a fast (fastest?) and reliable DNS server.. - but how do I find one ? Also - I did the ping tests from various geographic locations (we have servers in many countries) and GoDaddy seemed to be faster than eNom almost in every case. I'd be very thankful for any hints on this! Edited: Well.. maybe this one does not have an answer, after all...

  • Cannot compile GDB7.8 with Python support

    I am trying to install GDB7.8 with Python support. From the source folder, I am running ./configure --with-python When I did tab-complete from --with- I did not see Python in the list. But when I ran configure with that flag, it did not baulk. When I run make, it complains that Python is not found. checking for python2.7... no but Python is installed: $ which python python python2.7 python2.7-dbg-config python2 python2.7-dbg $ which python2.7 /usr/bin/python2.7 I compiled GDB without --with-python and things installed without error. I was under the impression that GDB7.8 had Python support without the need for special flags. But when I run: $gdb python (gdb) run test.py I get some sort of cannot import gdb Import error So then I tried calling "pi": (gdb) pi printf.py Python scripting is not supported in this copy of GDB. So... how do I get Python support in GDB7.8? is it actually not supported? Or should I not call "pi"?

    NOTE - Although this question is for a specific version of Ubuntu and a specific Broadcom model, the answer to it is for most Broadcom models and versions of Ubuntu 11.04, 11.10, 12.04 and 12.10. If you have come here from another question, feel free to read the answer instead. The answer covers many problems with several solutions. I'm having serious problems installing the Broadcom drivers for Ubuntu 11.04. It worked perfectly on my previous version, but now, it is impossible. I'm a user with no advance knowledge in Linux, so I would need clear explanations on make, compile, etc. I was following the instructions on the following blog, with no luck. How can I get Broadcom BCM4311 Wireless working? Can someone help me? Edit: For the command: "lspci | grep Network", I get the following message: 06:00.0 Network controller: Broadcom Corporation BCM4311 802.11b/g WLAN (rev 01) For the command: iwconfig, i get the following: lo no wireless extensions. eth0 no wireless extensions. When i follow the following steps (from the above link), there are a NO error message at all: open the 'Synaptic Package Manager' and search for bcm uninstall the bcm-kernel-source package make sure that the firmware-b43-installer and the b43-fwcutter packages are installed type into terminal: cat /etc/modprobe.d/* | egrep '8180|acx|at76|ath|b43|bcm|CX|eth|ipw|irmware|isl|lbtf|orinoco|ndiswrapper|NPE|p54|prism|rtl|rt2|rt3|rt6|rt7|witch|wl' (you may want to copy this) and see if the term blacklist bcm43xx is there if it is, type cd /etc/modprobe.d/ and then sudo gedit blacklist.conf put a # in front of the line: blacklist bcm43xx then save the file (I was getting error messages in the terminal about not being able to save, but it actually did save properly). reboot 'End of procedure' Before (not ubuntu 11.04), if i wanted to connect wireles, i just went to the icon at the upper side of the screen, click, showed ALL the wireless network available, and done.     Following the instructions on the pipelight installation page, I installed pipelight on Ubuntu 14.04. However, upon opening firefox the .wine-pipelight folder isn't present in my home folder, and I get the following errors: [PIPELIGHT:LIN:unknown] attached to process. Edit: Oddly enough, the .wine-pipelight folder is created wtih I open Nitro, although this still doesn't fix the issue.

  • Ubuntu 12.04.1 Update Manager and synaptic Package Manager not working

    Recently installed Ubuntu 12.04.1, 64bit on Intel Quad core system. There is a Red Circle with a WHITE 'minus' sign on the upper right hand corner. In the end of a long message displayed below the RED CIRCLE in 'grey' says that INSTALLED PACKAGES HAVE UNMET DEPENDENCIES. None of the following is working. 1. Ubuntu Software Center not opening. UPDATE MANAGER Could not initialize the package information An unresolvable problem occurred while initializing the package information.   • Why does my terrain turn white when I get close to it?

    When I zoom in on my terrain it goes white: The further in I zoom, the greater the whiteness becomes. Is this normal? Is this to speed up rendering or something? Can I turn it off? I'm also getting these error messages in the console over and over again: rc.right != m_GfxWindow-GetWidth() || rc.bottom != m_GfxWindow-GetHeight() and GUI Window tries to begin rendering while something else has not finished rendering! Either you have a recursive OnGUI rendering, or previous OnGUI did not clean up properly. Does this bear any correlation on the issue? Update I create virtual desktops to flit between using the program Deskpot. Turning this program off and restarting has stopped the above errors appearing in the console. However, I still get white terrain when I zoom in. Not a single error message. I've restarted my computer to no avail. I have an Asus NVidia GeForce GTX 760 2GB DDR5 Direct CU II OC Edition Graphics Card. Any known issues? Update I don't think it's fog...

  • Black screen appears when booting new install of 11.10 on my desktop, cannot access Grub menu to fix

    I installed 11.10 on my desktop PC but get a black screen after the BIOS screen when I try to boot it. I was able to run 10.04.04 on my hard drive before installing 11.10 and I am also able to use 11.10 on my usb pendrive and CD ROM. I've tried unplugging all USB devices before booting and also upgrading from 11.10 to 11.10. Holding the shift key from the BIOS screen doesn't allow me to access the GRUB menu to try: Highlight the first entry, press “e” to edit it. Navigate to words “quiet splash”, delete them and type “nomodeset” in their place (without quotes). Press Ctrl + X to continue boot. Once on the desktop, go to System Administration Additional Drivers and activate the recommended drivers. So running 11.10 on my pendrive, I tried editing /etc/default/grub, commenting out the GRUB_HIDDEN_TIMEOUT setting by putting a '#' in front of it to display the grub menu and setting GRUB_TIMEOUT setting to a value greater than or equal to 1 e.g. GRUB_TIMEOUT=10. However, when I run sudo update-grub, I get: /usr/sbin/grub-probe: error: cannot find a device for / (is /dev mounted?) I get the same error with update-grub after: sudo mount /dev/sda1 /mnt and after: sudo grub-install --root-directory=/mnt /dev/sda reboot sudo update-grub Other suggestions to fix the update-grub problem: Open synaptic, then purge all the related grub installed packages and reinstall grub-pc then and finally: sudo update-grub Or use Grub Customizer http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=1195275 What would be the best way to approach this? I'm concerned about purging "all the related grub installed packages" but if it's true some files are corrupted this would seem necessary. Also, was I executing the correct commands i.e. with mount and grub-install, before running grub-update?

  • How do I connect to my running VM via virsh?

    My VM has already been started via virsh start chameleon.ootbdev. When I do a virsh console chameleon.ootbdev I get the following output: Connected to domain chameleon.ootbdev Escape character is ^] error: internal error cannot find character device (null) Doing a google search on this led me to this "solution". Unfortunately, editing the domain via virsh edit chameleon.ootbdev doesn't seem to stick. I suspect the issue is that I'm inserting the XML incorrectly: the instructions from the link ask me to insert the following XML into the domain XML file. <serial type='pty'> <target port='0'/> </serial> <console type='pty'> <target type='serial' port='0'/> </console> I've posted my domain XML file to pastebin here. This is AFTER I've tried to insert the above XML. I inserted this XML after the </devices> block. My primary question is: How do I connect to the running VM? A secondary question would be: How do I edit the domain file with the above XML and get the changes to stick?

  • How relevant is UTF-7 when it comes to parsing emails?

    I recently implemented incoming emails for an application and boy, did I open the gates of hell? Since then every other day an email arrives that makes the app fail in a different way. One of those things is emails encoded as UTF-7. Most emails come as ASCII, some of the Latin encodings, or thankfully, UTF-8. Hotmail error messages (like email address doesn't exist or quota exceeded) seem to come as UTF-7. Unfortunately, UTF-7 is not an encoding Ruby understands: > "hello world".encode("utf-8", "utf-7") Encoding::ConverterNotFoundError: code converter not found (UTF-7 to UTF-8) > Encoding::UTF_7 => #<Encoding:UTF-7 (dummy)> My application doesn't crash, it actually handles the email quite well, but it does send me a notification about the potential error. I spent some time googling and I can't find anyone that implemented the conversion, at least not as a Ruby 1.9.3 Encoding::Converter. So, my question is, since I never got an email with actual content, from an actual person, in UTF-7, how relevant is that encoding? can I safely ignore it?

    I'm trying to get a stream off port 9999 and write to /dev/xvdf. I'm using Amazon EC2 with the Ubuntu 11.10 server image. By default I log in as 'ubuntu' which has sudo privileges. However, when I run the following netcat command, I get this error ubuntu@ip-10-252-35-122:~$ ls -al /dev/xv* brw-rw---- 1 root disk 202, 1 2011-11-30 22:22 /dev/xvda1 brw-rw---- 1 root disk 202, 80 2011-11-30 22:27 /dev/xvdf ubuntu@ip-10-252-35-122:~$ sudo netcat -p 9999 -l > /dev/xvdf bash: /dev/xvdf: Permission denied ubuntu@ip-10-252-35-122:~$ Any idea why I get the permission denied error and how I can work around it? Update: Something mysterious is running in the background that resets the permissions?     I want to record the 8 separate Line IN Channels from my M-Audio Delta 1010 Card. The card is recogniced nicely and a can record a single channel via arecord -d 10 -f cd -t wav -D channel1 out2.wav. I've set up the different channels in ~/.asoundrc. Now if I want to record a second channel in parallel (arecord -d 10 -f cd -t wav -D channel2 out2.wav) I get the error arecord: main:564: audio open error: Device or resource busy As I understand the delta 1010 is a single Access Card, so only one application can access it at a time. Is this correct? The next step was to configure a dual channel input in .asoundrc # envy24 channel 1+2 only pcm.test { type plug ttable.0.0 1 ttable.0.1 1 slave.pcm ice1712 } Which works ok when I do a arecord -d 10 -f cd -t wav -D test -c 2 out.wav (BTW can anyone point me to a tool to split a multi channel wav into a file per channel?) But when I want to record the channels separately with (-I option) arecord -d 10 -f cd -t wav -D test -c 2 -I channel1.wav channel2.wav I get no recordings. Did I miss something with the configuration or what are my options to record all 8 channels via arecord. I've no experience with jackd. Is it an option to install jackd and record the line ins via jackd?

    I just did a fresh install of Mythbuntu 12.04.1 on my Intel MB with nVidia 9500GT graphics card. Hardware's been working great with 10.10 for about 2 years. Background: (optional - feel free to skip to question) I was trying to get my component video output to generate 720p, messing around with the nvidia drivers, and now the entire display system is hosed. I can SSH in and get a terminal. Depending on which nvidia package I install/remove, I get: Garbage on screen (after I "apt-get remove nvidia*") A low-res graphical log-in screen where I can log in as fred or guest. If I log in as fred, it displays some text mode status line then goes right back to the log-in screen. If I log in as guest, I actually get the full Ubuntu desktop, but I need to be able to log in as fred. Other times I get an error: "API mismatch: the NVIDIA kernel module has version 304.43, but this NVIDIA driver component has version 295.49." I've googled around, including trying this thread with the same error message, but to no effect. Question: How can I just reset x settings, drivers, everything display-related to the exact same way it was after a fresh install?

Unzipped oracle-xe-11.2.0-1.0.x86_64.rpm.zip and then converted the rpm to the Ubuntu package by running: sudo alien --scripts -d oracle-xe-11.2.0-1.0.x86_64.rpm Created /sbin/chkconfig file and added the entries as specified there. Created /etc/sysctl.d/60-oracle.conf and added the entries as specified in the same link as above.   • DNS records on website.. What are they for?

    Recently we had to get some ddos protection for our website because of the large attacks we were seeing after getting a bit of popularity. We handed over our domain and hosting information to our ddos protection provider. It worked perfectly but I have a question. On our DNS records we have the Host and Answer and Type. The Host has our domain name there. The answer is this: SOMETEXTXXXX.dv.googlehosted.com. And when i copy and paste it into my browser it gives me a 404 error. But our website still loads and functions as it should. I don't understand why it would need this? I asked them about this and they said it is a method for ddos protection and the other IPs are the reverse proxy (the other ips give a 404 error too). Can anyone expand on this more please. How does all this tie in together and make the internet browser know where to point the person with all these reverse proxies and stuff I don't understand. Thank you.   • The one feature that would make me invest in SSIS 2012

    This week I was invited my Microsoft to give two presentations in Slovenia. My presentations went well and I had good energy and the audience was interacting with me. When I had some time over from networking and partying, I attended a few other presentations. At least the ones who where held in English. One of these was "SQL Server Integration Services 2012 - All the News, and More", given by Davide Mauri, a fellow co-worker from SolidQ. We started to talk and soon came into the details of the new things in SSIS 2012. All of the official things Davide talked about are good stuff, but for me, the best thing is one he didn't cover in his presentation. In earlier versions of SSIS than 2012, it is possible to have a stored procedure to act as a data source, as long as it doesn't have a temp table in it. In that case, you will get an error message from SSIS that "Metadata could not be found". This is still true with SSIS 2012, so the thing I am talking about is not really a SSIS feature, it's a SQL Server 2012 feature. And this is the EXECUTE WITH RESULTSETS feature! With this, you can have a stored procedure with a temp table to deliver the resultset to SSIS, if you execute the stored procedure from SSIS and add the "WITH RESULTSETS" option. If you do this, SSIS is able to take the metadata from the code you write in SSIS and not from the stored procedure! And it's very fast too. Let's say you have a stored procedure in earlier versions and when referencing that stored procedure in SSIS forced SSIS to call the stored procedure (which can take hours), to retrieve the metadata. Now, with RESULTSETS, SSIS 2012 can continue in milliseconds! This is because you provide the metadata in the RESULTSETS clause, and if the data from the stored procedure doesn't match this RESULTSETS, you will get an error anyway, so it makes sense Microsoft has provided this optimization for us.

    I am having a problem with a test page I set up for my website. The config file (index.html) looks like this <html> <head> <title>Welcome to website.net!</title> </head> <body> <h1>Success! The website.net virtual host is working!</h1> </body> </html> Which should display a page like this in my browser when I navigate to www.mywebsite.net Welcome to website.net! Success! The website.net virtual host is working! However I get a 403 "forbidden" error when I navigate to the page. What am I missing? I have the directory installed on /var/www/mywebsite.net/public_html/index.html I have the permissions of the /var/www directory set to 755 so that others can read and exicute it but it does not seem to be working. I also have port 80 open on my iptable. The server is a VPS server if that makes a difference however I have added a DNS record for the ip address. Any help is appreciated!   • Kubuntu 11.04 bad experience, Gimp crashes and other bugs

    I installed Kubuntu 11.04 64bit today. First let me expose some issues, this is not a rant, just some observations on Kubuntu 11.04 :) Flash doesn't work. The package "flashplugin-installer" was installed by rekonq. But still no flash. Additional Drivers (jockey-kde) doesn't show up automatically after first login. I tried to delete a large file (19,2 GB), an error appeared: "Please empty the trash first, no more space available" or something like that, but you know what? My trash was empty! (Then I found in Dolphin the settings to increment the max size of the trash). Amarok has no play/pause/forward/back buttons, only after changing settings to show those buttons on the top bar. GTK applications like ubuntu software center, inkscape... are in english, but my default language is "german". Only gimp allows to install the "de" language pack. The numblock turns off after each restart. In the KDE Control Center, the "remember last state" of numblock is set. But this is not working. I had some crashes: Nepomuk, Policy-kit, plasma-workspace and gimp. But now to the important stuff. I really need Gimp to work. After starting it, I get a crash: giowck@giowck-desktop:~$ gimp (gimp:1899): GLib-WARNING **: /build/buildd/glib2.0-2.28.6/./glib/goption.c:2132: ignoring no-arg, optional-arg or filename flags (8) on option of type 0 Speicherzugriffsfehler (in English: "Memory error") What can I do to run Gimp?     If you are having troubles (shown below) when you publish your access database to https SharePoint2010 site with self-signed certificate. Problem: First you are getting a warning see the screenshot below: And then getting the error message: Solution: The error “The name of the security certificate is invalid or does not match the name of the site” comes when the ‘common name’ in the certificate doesn’t match the address you provided in browser to access the site. To fix the problem , you need to use script to generate the certificate rather than using the IIS UI, this is because it will default the common name to the server name and you will have the above problem when using that certificate to a different host-name web application. You can use SelfSSl.exe (IIS 6.0 only), you have to specify common name(cn), for example as: selfssl.exe /T /N:cn=testsharepoint.com /K:1024 /V:7 /S:1 /P:443 OR you can use makecert (IIS7.0 and above) makecert -r -pe -n 'CN=my.domain.here' -b 01/01/2000 -e 01/01/2036 -eku 1.3.6.1.5.5.7.3.1 -ss my -sr localMachine -sky exchange -sp "Microsoft RSA SChannel Cryptographic Provider" -sy 12 After you have created the certificate, you then need to add that self-signed certificate to your IIS web site and to the Trusted Root Certification Authorities.
