    I have some philosophical feeling that adding to an entity fields which doesn't mapped to the DB is a wrong way of solving problems. But are there any concrete situations where using @Transient fields leads to implicit and hard fixing problems? For example, is it possible that adding/removing 2nd level cache will break our app when there are @Transient fields in our entities?

    In a J2EE application, we are using EJB2 in weblogic. To avoid losing time building the initial context and looking up EJB Home interface, I'm considering the Service Locator Pattern. But after a few search on the web I found that event if this pattern is often recommended for the InitialContext caching, there are some negative opinion about the EJB Home caching. Questions: Is it safe to cache EJB Home lookup result ? What will happen if one my cluster node is no more working ? What will happen if I install a new version of the EJB without refreshing the service locator's cache ?

  • How do I calculate a good hash code for a list of strings?

    Background: I have a short list of strings. The number of strings is not always the same, but are nearly always of the order of a “handful” In our database will store these strings in a 2nd normalised table These strings are never changed once they are written to the database. We wish to be able to match on these strings quickly in a query without the performance hit of doing lots of joins. So I am thinking of storing a hash code of all these strings in the main table and including it in our index, so the joins are only processed by the database when the hash code matches. So how do I get a good hashcode? I could: Xor the hash codes of all the string together Xor with multiply the result after each string (say by 31) Cat all the string together then get the hashcode Some other way So what do people think? (If you care we are using .NET and SqlServer)

  • FacesMessages and rich:effect?

    I'd like to be able to make an Ajax call using JSF/Seam/RichFaces and have the page update with the relevant h:messages component. That works with no problem. I'm able to perform the appropriate reRender. However, I'd also like to be able to make use of rich:effect to make it a bit prettier. Ideally, I'd like to be able to have the messages fade in and then disappear when the user clicks on them. However, I've been unable to get this working thus far. Has anyone gotten such a scenario working? Does anyone who knows JSF/Seam a bit better than me have any good advice? Thanks in advance!

    Hello all, I'm currently in the process of adding JNI functionality into a legacy delphi app. In a single-threaded environment everything works fine, but as soon as I move into multi-threaded environment, things start to become hairy. My problem is that calling JavaVM^.AttachCurrentThread( JavaVM, @JEnv, nil ); returns 0, but puts the JEnv pointer to nil. I have no idea why jvm.dll should return a NULL pointer.     I'm trying to make a JFrame with a usable content area of exactly 500x500. If I do this... public MyFrame() { super("Hello, world!"); setSize(500,500); } ... I get a window whose full size is 500x500, including the title bar, etc., where I really need a window whose size is something like 504x520 to account for the window border and titlebar. How can I achieve this?

    Hi, I am new to Android and have been working on an app that needs to get all of the user's contact's phone numbers. Apparently the code I have does not work with the 2.1 SDK. But I even hardcoded the 2, and it says the same thing. Any help would be much appreciated.

  • Refactoring a long method that simply populates

    I am refactoring a method which is over 500 lines (don't ask me why) The method basically queries a list of maps from the database and for each map in the list does some computation and adds the value of that computation to the map. There are however too many computations and puts being done that the code has reached over 500 lines already!     What would happen if an exception is thrown during the execution of finalize()? Is the stack unwind like normally? Does it continue finalize() and ignore the exception? Does it stop finalize() and continue GC the object? Or something else? I'm not looking for guidelines of using finalize() there are plently of pages explaining that.

    I have a table DEAL and a table DEAL_TYPE. I would like to map this code: public class Deal { DealType type; } public enum DealType { BASE("Base"), EXTRA("Extra"); } The problem is that the data already exist in the database. And I'm having a hard time mapping the classes to the database. The database looks something like that: TABLE DEAL { Long id; Long typeId; } TABLE DEAL_TYPE { Long id; String text; } I know I could use a simple @OneToMany relationship from deal to deal type, but I would prefer to use an enum. Is this possible? I almost got it working by using a EnumType.ORDINAL type. But unfortunately, my IDs in my deal type table are not sequential, and do not start at 1. Any suggestions?

    Currently, my code would construct the GWT form, which user would submit directly to openId (or any authenticaiton service). Such a method works fine. However, what if I had the gwt page server access the OpenID provider, is there a way/strategy for the server to mediate authentication between its client and the auth provider? I wish to know the answers with respect to GAE as the proxy and, regardless if GAE or Tomcat is the intended proxy, answers wrt Google Accounts OpenID OAuth If so, it would be wonderful if someone could describe the installation strategy.

  • Character encoding issues?

    We had a a clob column in DB. Now when we extract this clob and try to display it (plain text not html), it prints junk some characters on html screen. The character when directly streamed to a file looks like ” (not the usual double quote on regular keyboard) One more observation: System.out.println("”".getBytes()[0]); prints -108. Why a character byte should be in negative range ? Is there any way to display it correctly on a html screen ?

    I have a jTable with columns 'Job_no' and 'Status'with values such as: Job_no Status 1 Active 2 Pending 3 Pending I would like it so that if a user clicks on a Status say in this case the first 'Pending'(where Job_no = 2) an inputDialog pops up allowing the user to change the status of the cell clicked-how can I do this? Bear in mind you will also have to retrieve the Job_no(that corresponds to that status) somehow, and that, though I'm OK with JOptionPane's, I'm new to JTables. I'm using JDBC(mySQL) and have a table 'Jobs' which amongst other things, has column Job_no and status. Thanks for your help.
