  I'm not a developer by profession. Therefore, I'm not exposed to real world technical problems that face professional developers. I read/heard about web farms, integration between different systems, load balancing ... etc. Therefore, I was wondering if there are ways for the individual developer to create an environment that simulates real world situations with minimal number of machines like: web farms & caching simulating many users accessing your website (Pressure tests?) Performance load balancing anything you think I should consider. By the way, I have a server machine and 1 PC. and I don't mind investing in tools and software. PS.   Hello, So i decide to to develop my asp.net site into Silverlight. I today start to search articles about MVVM pattern which i want use in my Silverlight app, and i am confused :/ It's hart to me understand how works this pattern. I am find 3 frameworks which supports MVVM pattern in Silverlight - Caliburn, MVVM Light Toolkit and GoodLight. Should i start from own implementation of pattern or use framework? Is this frameworks only a project solutions in which i can insert my code? Which framework is the best for novice and which for professional? I ask for this, cause i must start to rewrite my app from asp.net to Silverlight and i don't know that i can do it first and later (when i understand MVVM pattern and framework) implement this pattern in finished app ? Or from begining rewrite project to MVVM framework?

  Hey folks, I'm pretty new to flash, so maybe I'm missing something. I'm using CS5 flash professional to build a swf. I have it publishing to flash 8, actionscript 2. but it will only work with browsers that have 10.1+ plugins, no matter what I try. is there something really obvious that I'm missing?   Naming things well is arguably Job 1 for professional programmers. Yet we have all suffered from some bad naming choices from time to time. So just to vent a little, what are some doozies that you may have run across? Just to get things started: One of our original developers wasn't sure what to call a secondary key - on what turned out to be a primary table for this app - so he called it: DL2WhateverTheHellThatIs. Unfortunately this system generates entity mappings from the XML, and attributes defined there result in classes, methods, and constants that are referenced through-out the app. To this day it is very hard to find a source file that does not reference this, er, thing! Up to now, all I have been doing is practice coding from books and websites. I am now looking for a 'real-life' experience. Besides going to a company and getting an interview, are there any other options in which I can get paid to code? I have posted some ads on craiglists but that's about it. • Visual Studio 2010 + ReSharper Not Working

  I've installed ReSharper 5 on two installations of Visual Studio 2010 Professional. In both cases, ReSharper claims it has installed successfully - but Visual Studio doesn't recognize the extension. It doesn't show up in the Extensions Manager, doesn't appear in Help - About - Installed products, and can't be found anywhere else in the environment. I've tried install / uninstall of both Visual Studio and ReSharper, computer restarts, etc. Both machines have Visual Studio 2008 and ReSharper 5 works fine in these IDEs, and both machines are running Windows 7. I've found other people online with this issue, but no solutions. Anyone know how to fix this?

  Hey guys, I have searched around a bit, and have not really found a professional type response to how to have secure fileupload capability so I wanted to get the opinion of some of the experts on this site. I am currently allowing upload of mp3s and images, and while I am pretty confident in preventing xss and injection attacks on my site, I am not really familiar with fileupload security. I basically just use php fileinfo and check an array of accepted filetypes against the filetype. For images, there is the getimagesize function and some additional checks. As far as storing them, I just have a folder within my directory, because I want the users to be able to use the files. If anyone could give me some tips I would really appreciate it.

  Setup I am using Sparx Systems Enterprise Architect Professional edition 7.5: http://www.sparxsystems.com.au/ and MS PowerPoint. Problem I have various audiences for presentations requiring display in MS PowerPoint -- ranging from managers to developers, whose depth of technical knowledge and requirements for knowledge varies. Question I have tried various settings for fonts, colors, and so on, but displaying a diagram with any level of detail (even simple class diagrams). These diagrams are very difficult to fit into a PowerPoint slide and render well when using a projector or a Live Meeting.   I get this annoying message everytime I try to run visual studio 2005(even using "Run as Administrator" gives same message). I have VS 2005 Professional with all the latest service packs installed including vs2005 SP1 and vs 2005 update for Vista. I am part of the administrators group on my machine. Still I have this problem. Some read on the web suggests that Running program in Compatibility mode solves the problem. Others also recommend turning off the message forever. Well my question is how do I turn off this warning which seems to bother me even if I am part of administrators group. Does Visual Studio does not run in administrator mode even when I am an administrator or even I use "Run as adminsitrator". Also it would be greate if someone out there can highlight what features of Visual Studio wont be available if Visual Studio is launched as a normal user (User is not an administrator/part of the administrator group) on Windows 7.

  Is the Windows 7 Home Premium sufficient for software development? Development would be in Visual Studio 2010. I'm on a budget so would rather purchase 'Home Premium' rather than 'Professional' or 'Ultimate'. The Microsoft site says there is next to nothing functionality wise between them that developers would miss. Can anyone confirm or deny? BTW. Does it come with a version of IIS?   I am not starting an argumentative discussion here and this post is not about career development, but from the commercial point of view: If a company was using ASP.Net MVC as a main methodology to build their web sites and application. However, ASP.Net MVC takes more time to show a functional application than ASP.Net Web Forms, for example, building domain models would take some time which obviously can't be represented on a UI at that current stage. My question is, if a client wants to see a functional demo application (just a proof of concept) so he knows that the company he is dealing with is professional and capable of doing that. Would it be better to do that demo in ASP.Net Web Forms only to show the client, and then work on the real application using ASP.Net MVC? If not, what are the (quick) alternatives?, I mean, if we tell the client to wait till we have a working demo (by ASP.Net MVC) we may lose the client and the whole project opportunity.

  I'm a fairly good programmer, knowledgeable in C, C++, Python, Ruby and PHP. I'd like to get started with microcontroller programming. I do know nothing about this topic. Microcontrollers are minimal computers on little circuit boards, right? I'm pretty new to electronics too, do I need to be an expert in it to do stuff with microcontrollers? What can I do with them? Would e.g.: A Pacman or Tetris game on an LCD be possible and not too hard? Where should I start? Basically I want to program something really small I can then take with me. This is my only real goal. Are microcontrollers the right thing for this, or are there better solutions? I'd like to do this for fun and as a hobby, I don't want to become a professional in it.
