• AIR app still running when the iphone is blocked?

  I just made a simple game with flash professional 6.0 and adobe AIR sdk 3.4 for iPhone. The problem is this: when I lock the iphone pressing the power button, the screen switches off as usual, but the music of the game still sounds. If I exit the game pressing the home button it exits fine. Is only when locking the phone with the app opened. Also, I opted-out of multitasking for my app, so if I close my app with the home button and I reload it, it loads the main menu. Anyone knows how can I solve this?

• New Site : Showing first time visitors what the site offers

  The site I'm working on, is almost completed. I have a Demo page created as well, where people can try out the product. However for first time visitors to understand what service the site actually provides I'm brainstorming with the following ideas. Since a lot of folks have been through this a number of time, would like to get some advice on what they use and what generally works. Here is what I came up with - 1.) Plain Slideshow, showing various features. (Using jQquery, hence figuring out a simple BUT professional looking plugin).Simplest to implement. 2.) Flash - Will have to hire someone. 3.) JellyVision ? - I'm not sure if this is free though. But something free like this would be great !

• Need a Concatenating VBA code to prevent memory issue workaround

  My set up: Have 50,000 rows of data. ( My row count will increase in the future. So might as well say I have a full worksheet of 64000+ rows.) All Data is TEXT, no formulas, etc. Column A is open Columns B thru AC contain the Data that needs to be concatenated The Data in the rows once concatenated to Column A will contain 60,000 digits or 6kb in file size. After additional maniuplation each cell will become a file. I have tried concatenating in Excel and I run into memory issues. The memory issue is when I Select and fill down the concatenating function into the worksheet. It crashes at the 8200 +/-row. My system is 2gb of ram, windows xp professional and Excel 2003. Have 4GB of disk space Hoping to find a VBA code that will conserve memory, and not crash like it does in excel. Thank you

  In an ActionScript 2 project I can create a new MovieClip, right-click on it on the library and select "Component Definition" to add parameters that can be referenced inside the MovieClip. This parameters can be easily changed in the MovieClips's properties. Now, I'm working on an ActionScript 3 project but haven't been able to figure out a way to obtain the values passed in those parameters. I defined a parameter named "textToDisplay" but when I write the following in the Actions for the first frame I get an error: trace(textToDisplay); This is the error: 1120: Access of undefined property textToDisplay. I've got an idea for a website I want to build as a learning experience and possibly as a business, but I don't have the faintest idea what database to use, let alone how to fix/debug the database when I run into problems. I'm looking for a course, a website, a book, etc., that will give me an overview of modern database technology (SQL vs. NOSQL vs. relational vs. non-relational (I only have a vague idea what these even mean)). I'm starting by googling/wikipediaing all of these terms, but if there are better, comprehensive resources available that I should be aware of, I'd love to hear about them.

  Hi, Is it possible to run the 32-bit version of Visual Studio 2008 Professional on a Windows Vista 64-bit system? Are there any known caveats that I would need to be aware of?   [This is an empirical question about the state-of-the-art: I am NOT asking if Java is cooler or less cool than the dynamic languages that work in the JVM.] Aside from cases where performance is a main decision factor, do companies/developers still willingly chose Java over Groovy, JRuby or JPython? Personal Note: The reason I am asking is that, while I do some subset of my professional work in Ruby (not JRuby, for now), in my personal projects I use Java. While I have written non-trivial apps in Groovy, I prefer Java, but I wonder if I should just get over it and do everything in Groovy. I like Java because I feel that static typing saves me time and aids refactoring. (No, I am not familiar with Scala.) However, I feel that this very empirical, on-topic programming question may inform my decision.

• Debug startup program behavior

  I want to Debug a program called Freecall in my Windows 7 Professional laptop. Now it shows as a Startup item in "System Configuration" console. I tried to uncheck it in the Startup item and restart, but it keeps on adding itself to HKCU\Software|Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run. i think its the same for Yahoo messenger..these programs keep on adding to startup even after I manually deleted the entry from the registry. I want to debug and find out if after starting the executable, the program writes to the registry. How can I do that? Is there a way I can run the binary in Sandbox mode? Are there any VS tools for this?

I have been using a lot of different languages, including C++ by now, and I can only say that I really like it. I'm far more horrified by Delphi than by C++. Actually, I find it's an almost perfect, compiled language! I've been doing a lot of different projects in C++ as well, ranging from 3D video games to webservers and emulators for old video game consoles. And I still do not see the problem everyone else seems to have with it!

• How can I learn Android?

  I am a freshman in college which has been Java programming for over a year. I haven taken a couple of programming courses, both of which were with Java. And I have done web development for several years. So overall, I would't say that I am a complete beginner in programming. Recently, I have developed a strong interest in developing for Android. I read that Android development was with Java and I thought it would making development easier for me. But I was very wrong. Based on reviews from Amazon, I have begun reading "Professional Android Application Development by Meier but everything is going over my head. The Busy Coder's Guide to Android Development seems a bit more for my level but I still want everybody else's opinion. The Google stuff isn't very helpful to me at my level and neither are the tutorials on anddev and such. Any advice for a complete beginner on how to get started? Thanks.

• Lua not producing table of functions (IO API)

  I'm working on a basic project in Lua. I've been trying to get data from files using the IO API (as defined here), but when I open a file and give it a handle, it doesn't seem to return a table of functions. The (erroneous bit of) code: local unread = fs.list("email/"..from.."/") local send = "" for _,file in ipairs(unread) do local handle = io.open(file,"r") local text = handle:read("*a") send = send .. text .. "\n" handle.close() fs.delete(file) end The fs you see on the first line is a professional filesystem wrapper round the IO API, not my work and perfectly error-free, so that's not the problem. However, when I try to read the file (handle:read()), it throws "attempt to index nil". Tracing it, it turns out that handle itself is nil. Any ideas?

  Hi folks, I've got an application on Codeplex. It's based on some other free open source code which comes with a BSD license. As such, people keep asking if they can use my open source code/library in their commercial apps. I want them to be able to, provided they give credit to the source app (the project which i based my code, from .. and that has the BSD license) and also my code. They can take my code and do whatever (fork it, etc).. Just make sure they give credit, of course. So - what license could I use? Currently, I've set it to be GPL .. so is that ok? NOTE: Yes yes, I know that any answers are not from a lawyer and it's just all personal thoughts and I need to consult a special lawyer if I want some professional advice, etc. etc. I'm happy to take that risk, here.
