    Earlier this week at the Mix10 conference, Microsoft announced the developer story of the Windows Phone 7 Series. As expected, its all about Silverlight! For all the details I highly recommend to watch the recorded keynotes (day 1, day 2). Tonight I could resist trying to build my very first Windows Phone 7 application; the traditional Hello World thingy. Because the developer tools (Visual Studio 2010 and the free Visual Studio 2010 Express) have pretty nice templates, that wasnt much of a challenge....Did you know that DotNetSlackers also publishes .net articles written by top known .net Authors? For all the details I highly recommend to watch the recorded keynotes (day 1, day 2). Tonight I could resist trying to build my very first Windows Phone 7 application; the traditional Hello World thingy. Because the developer tools (Visual Studio 2010 and the free Visual Studio 2010 Express) have pretty nice templates, that wasn’t much of a challenge. So I tried to build something real: an application that can display SharePoint 2010 content, for example items from an announcements list. I head to work my way around some limitations because both SharePoint 2010 and the developer tools are still in beta and CTP, but finally I got it working! Because of the many workarounds, the code is not yet ready for publication, but I’ve created a small screencast so you can see the result.     For a project I'm using jqote for templating in JavaScript and HTML generated by MVC 4 with Razor. One would expect the Html.Raw to kick in here but somehow it doesn't. Or Razor wants to HtmlEncode what's in there. The question is: Does anyone have an idea why? Is this a bug or by design? Without the script tags it works. But we need the script tags cause we need to template in JavaScript. Hardcoded it works, but we need to use a variable because this will not always be a template. Without the @if it works, but it's there, we need it.   • Porting .NET 3.5 app to Linux

    Started doing research on porting a .NET 3.5 Windows Service application to Linux last week and today.There is a WinForms maintenance\admin tool that needs to be ported too. Looking at Mono and related friends. Need to come up with a way to support MSMQ and Windows Workflow Foundation. Looks like the support for this in Mono is in alpha and not stable yet.

  • 2D Tile-Based Concept Art App

    I'm making a bunch of 2D games (now and in the near future) that use a 2D, RPG-like interface. I would like to be able to quickly paint tiles down and drop character sprites to create concept art. Sure, I could do it in GIMP or Photoshop. But that would require manually adding each tile, layering on more tiles, cutting and pasting particular character sprites, etc. and I really don't need that level of granularity; I need a quick and fast way to churn out concept art. Is there a tool that I can use for this? Perhaps some sort of 2D tile editor which lets me draw sprites and tiles given that I can provide the graphics files.

  • Alt-Tab in Unity 2D makes app icon jiggle instead of switching

    I'm using Unity 2D as my desktop, and it works fine most of the time, but every now and then, I try to Alt-Tab to switch to a different application, and instead of switching to that window, the launcher bar opens, and the icon of the application I was trying to switch to starts jiggling. If I try to switch to something else, that icon starts jiggling too. If I click on the icon with the mouse, then it stops jiggling and switches to the requested window. What is this behavior? I haven't seen any mention of jiggling icons in Unity. I don't understand the original purpose of this, and I'd like a way to fix it so that I won't have to use the mouse.

  • Slow in the app, fast in SSMS

    Users complain about a timeout but when you run the exact same query in SSMS it runs in a flash. Sounds familiar? I've been baffled by this before. I worked out that I was getting a different query plan in SSMS because of different SET OPTIONS but, having dealt with that, I was then stuck with parameter sniffing as the cause of the timeout. I've read about that but still didn't really understand how to fix it. Erland Sommarskorg has published an excellent article (http://www.sommarskog.se/query-plan-mysteries.html) in which he clearly explains what's going on and provides tools and techniques to fix it.   • June 25 changes to BIS 742.15 How does it impact SSL iPhone App export compliance

    This question isn't strictly development-related but I hope it's still acceptable :) On June 25, 2010 the BIS updated 742.15 and of interest to me is the new 742.14(b)(4) "Exclusions from mass market classification request, encryption registration and self-classification reporting requirements" and 742.15(b)(4)(ii) which states… (ii) Foreign products developed with or incorporating U.S.-origin encryption source code, components, or toolkits. Foreign products developed with or incorporating U.S. origin encryption source code, components or toolkits that are subject to the EAR, provided that the U.S. origin encryption items have previously been classified or registered and authorized by BIS and the cryptographic functionality has not been changed. Such products include foreign developed products that are designed to operate with U.S. products through a cryptographic interface. I take this to mean that my Canadian produced product that uses https is now excluded from requiring a CCATTS. What does everyone else think?

  • Why is my new ID always "1"

    I have a parent-child relationship between two objects. Parent :has_many :children Child :belongs_to :parent When creating a new parent, in the same controller, I'm creating the child. @mom = Parent.new @child = Child.new @mom.children << @child That all seems to go okay, but this parent has one more attribute - this parent has a favorite child @mom.favorite_child = @child Seems like this should work, except let's say that this is the 61st child in the database, so it gets an ID of 61 (and I know this is happening, because when I check the database, the child record has an ID of 61). For some reason, when I assign the @child to the parent's "favorite_child" attribute, "favorite_child" gets set to "1" - when I need it to be set to "61". Clues?

  • Facebook Game Rejected: "Your app icon must not overlap with content in your cover image"

    Sorry if this isnt the right stackexchange site to ask this, it was really hard to determine. My FB game just recently got rejected for 2 reasons. The first I fixed nicely and is irrelevant but the second I just can't see to figure out what they mean and I was hoping someone else got the same issue and did know what they meant. These are the errors: You can ignore the error under "Banners" The web preview of my game looks like this now: All I know is that the rejection has something to do with the cover image, not the icons or the screenshots. Please let me know what to do to get approved. Thanks a lot!

  • Architecture guidelines for a "single page web-app"

    I'm going to start a side project to build a "single page" web application. The application needs to be real-time, sending updates to the clients as changes happen. Are there any good resources for best-practice approaches wrt the architecture for these kinds of applications. The best resource I've found so far is the trello architecture article here: http://blog.fogcreek.com/the-trello-tech-stack/ To me, this architecture, although very sexy, is probably over-engineered for my specific needs - although I do have similar requirements. I'm wondering if I need to bother with a sub/pub at the server side, could I not just push updates from the server when something happens (e.g. when the client sends an update to the server, write the update to the db, and then send an update to the clients). Tech-wise, I'm probably looking to build this out in Node.JS or maybe Ruby, although the architecture guidelines should to some extent apply to any underlying server technologies.

  • iphone app crashing when url connection connection timed out is coming

    I'm creating iphone app. In that, when the app starts, it connects to server and downloads few images and then proceeds with app. When app is downloading, it will show the initial splash screen. as long as my server is able to ping my iphone, its working well. but the trouble starts when my server is taking much time to respond for the NSURL request. The app is crashing with following error: Mon May 14 13:56:34 unknown Springboard[24] <Warning>: com.xxxx.xxx failed to launch in time I understood that when such issues happen with application, iphone crashes the appliation. I would like to know how much max time iphone allows app to respond to such instances. Is there any max value for that?

  • Minimize useless tweaking of a numeric app

    I'm developing a numeric application (nonlinear optimizer), with a zillion knobs to tweak and rising. It's not my first foray into this domain, but this time there are even more variables in the code and I'm on a tight schedule. Don't want to waste time fiddling. Days or even months can potentially be wasted adjusting variables, recompiling, and reprocessing benchmark datasets. The resulting data is viewed and trouble spots are checked. The overall quality of the solution is reported by the program but the meaning of the report could change over time. (Numeric units for the report are one thing I'm trying to nail down.) One main problem is organizing result files to identify each with specific code changes. Note taking can be a pain, is there software to help with this? Are there agreed best practices to making this kind of development cycle reliably move forward? The solver package converges to its optimal solution with mechanical determination, but I'm all too familiar with the way an excess of design decisions can mire development.
