• Applying a pixel shader effect to a portion of an image

  I have a ScrollViewer that contains a very large video (16 megapixel @ 10fps) and I want to apply a pixel shader effect to it. Given the size of the images I can't apply the effect directly to the image. So I apply the effect to the ScrollContentPresenter in the control style. Which is great, everything runs nice and fast. However, I'm also rendering annotations inside of the ScrollContentPresenter which I do NOT want effects applied to (but they need to move and scale along with the image). Is there to apply the effect just to the clipped and displayed portion of the image or do I need to build a rather more complex control?

• When is it appropriate to do interaction based testing as opposed to state based testing?

  Hi, When I use Easymock(or a similar mocking framework) to implement my unit tests, I'm forced to do interaction-based testing (as I don't get to assert on the state of my dependencies. Or am I mistaken?). On the other hand if I use a hand written stub (instead of using easymock) I can implement state based testing. I'm quite unclear if I want to go with interaction based testing or state based testing. I'm biased and I want to use Easymock, but I'm not sure if there would be any side-effects that I may have to face in the future. Can anyone please throw some light on this? Thanks in advance!

The returned type isn't IDisposable in this case. Does it come down to discretion?

I have excluded flash as a solution and would like to use those fine-looking effects of mootools fx. But the problem is that I'm really lousy when it comes to javascript. So if anyone could give me an easy solution for fading in one single image onload and when the image is loaded I would be really happy. • Is it possible to access raw iphone audio output?

  Is it possible access raw PCM data from the iphone audio output? I know I can embed an MP3 and use AudioUnit. But if the user is playing music in the background from their itunes library, is it possible to access that audio data? This is for an app that shows visual effects, which react to the music. From what I can tell, it isn't possible, but that's just from lack of finding any information at all, rather than actual confirmation that it can't be done. If it isn't possible to access the audio stream from the ipod, is it possible to access raw audio output from the Media Player inside an app, or is pretty much not permitted to access raw audio data from the itunes library at all? EDIT: I found this question: iOS - Access output audio from background program, which say I can't access the audio from a background app. But is it possible to get the audio data from the itunes library if I play it inside the app?

From what I've seen, functional programming has several advantages over the classical imperative style: Stateless programs; No side effects Concurrency; Plays extremely nice with the rising multi-core technology Programs are usually shorter and in some cases easier to read Productivity goes up (example: Erlang) Imperative programming is a very old paradigm (as far as I know) and possibly not suitable for the 21st century Why are companies using or programs written in functional languages still so "rare"? Why, when looking at the advantages of functional programming, are we still using imperative programming languages? Maybe it was too early for it in 1990, but today?

• Zooming to UIView and it's sub-views

  Hi, I have a UIView which I can zoom to (as it is set as a subview of UIScrollView). UIView has UILabel, UITextField, etc. If I just zoom to the UIView, then of course label and text field get fuzzy (the same effect if you are zooming to the image file without changing image resolution). To solve the problem I need to increase the font size and sizes of the UILable and UITextField in according to the scale used to zoom in (scale is passed as a param by the UIScrollView). This is where I am getting confused. Changing frame (by increasing it width and height by zooming scale) I get all my elements (sub-views) repositions (because changing frame effects center and bounds) Question: 1. What would I need to do to zoom in to the sub-views and just increase the sub-view sizes while keeping them in the exactly the same position? thanks

• Does isolation frameworks (Moq, RhinoMock, etc) lead to test overspecification?

  In Osherove's great book "The Art of Unit Testing" one of the test anti-patterns is over-specification which is basically the same as testing the internal state of the object instead of some expected output. To my experience, using Isolation frameworks can cause the same unwanted side effects as testing internal behavior because one tends to only implement the behavior necessary to make your stub interact with the object under test. Now if your implementation changes later on (but the contract remains the same), your test will suddenly break because you are expecting some data from the stub which was not implemented. So what do you think is the best approach to counter this? 1) Implement your stubs/mocks fully, this has the negative side-effect of potentially making your test less readable and also specifying more than necessary to make your test pass. 2) Favor manual, fully implemented fakes. 3) Implement your stubs/fakes so that they make your test just pass, and then deal with the brittleness that this might introduce.

  I'm trying to draw strings character by character to add lighting effects to shapes composed of text. while (i != line.length()) { c = line.substring(i, i + 1); cWidth = g.getFontMetrics().stringWidth(c); g.drawString(c, xx += cWidth, yy); i++; } The problem is, the width of a character isn't the actual distance it's drawn from another character when those two characters are printed as a string. Is there any way to get the correct distance in graphics2d?

However that's not so practical; I'm not a javascript developer, haven't got firebug installed, and I can't install it anywhere I go. My idea idea is that of collecting the best "mini-scripts" that whoever can just copy and paste in his browser without the need of installing extensions and stuff.

  idea Via jQuery, I was able to mark all :first-child and :last-child elements in document (well, almost all :)) with class first which could I later style (i.e. first li in ul#navigation would be easily adressable as ul#navigation .first). • Catching "NullPointerExceptions" in JavaScript

  I'm writing quite a bit of code in Prototype.js which returns null if a DOM-id wasn't found. $("someId").show(); If someId doesn't exist, a method will be called on null, which halts the entire program, in effect disabling all JS effects after the error. I could just check for null before executing such a statement, but this is getting tiring. I would like to catch an exception but I'm not sure which one its is. MDC lists the following ECMA Script error types: * Error * EvalError * RangeError * ReferenceError * SyntaxError * TypeError * URIError * DOMException * EventException * RangeException Also, do browsers have a unified way of dealing with a method call on null?

• how do I filter RoutingErrors and their long stack trace out of my log? rails

  I am seeing several strange requests like this, with urls like /sitemap/, /google_sitemap.xml.gz, /sitemap.xml.gz, /google_sitemap.xml, /cgi-bin/awstat/awstats.pl, etc. The default rails behavior dumps these long stack traces into my log, like the following: ActionController::RoutingError (No route matches "/rails/info/properties" with {:method=>:get}): /dh/passenger/lib/phusion_passenger/rack/request_handler.rb:92:in `process_request' /dh/passenger/lib/phusion_passenger/abstract_request_handler.rb:207:in `main_loop' /dh/passenger/lib/phusion_passenger/railz/application_spawner.rb:400:in `start_request_handler' /dh/passenger/lib/phusion_passenger/railz/application_spawner.rb:351:in `handle_spawn_application' /dh/passenger/lib/phusion_passenger/utils.rb:184:in `safe_fork' etc. Is there any way to stop these long stack traces? I wouldn't mind the first line, the ActionController::RoutingError with the message and the url, but I'd like to get rid of the long stack of passenger stuff.

As I know, there is a free implementation of some NextStep classes, the GNUStep. The web-site is almost built with only strings. I read GNUStep documents, classes are enough. DB connection will be made with C interfaces. Most biggest problem which I'm concerning is linking and binary compatibility. I'm currently configuring FreeBSD on VirtualBox, but I wanna know any possibility informations about this from experts. This is not a production server. Just a trial.   Is it possible to do regressions in R using a panel data set with a binary dependent variable? I am familiar with using glm for logit and probit and plm for panel data, but am not sure how to combine the two. Are there any existing code examples? Thank you. EDIT It would also be helpful if I could figure out how to extract the matrix that plm() is using when it does a regression. For instance, you could use plm to do fixed effects, or you could create a matrix with the appropriate dummy variables and then run that through glm(). In a case like this, however, it is annoying to generate the dummies yourself and it would be easier to have plm do it for you. Abiel

• Free sounds for iPhone games.

  I'm looking for a good source for sound effects for my iPhone game. I like SoundSnap, but they charge you for every sound you download, not just the ones you end up using. Sound design in games can be a very iterative process and I don't want to pay for 10 sounds I never use before finding the right one. freesound.org is another really good site, but they are all CC licensed and can't be used in commercial games. It's unclear if a free iPhone App is considered commercial (or if my final game will be free). Googling for this returns a huge number of pay sites with horrible web pages. I don't mind paying for sounds, but I want to pay for what I use. Any good personal recommendations?

  My client has 1000 WordPress blogs hosted on a server for customers. Each one is in its own domain through cpanel and SuPHP, running in CGI mode on Apache2.2. Now he wants me (I'm the PHP programmer) to get WP-Cache loaded out on each of these blogs and not just activated, but enabled. He also wants the timeout value set to 2 days instead of the default setting. I have root on LAMP. What is the preferred way to roll out an update to each blog such that on a page view, it sees if WP-Cache is enabled or not. If not, it needs to copy it out from a central source, activate it, and then enable it along with the different timeout value being used.

  Suppose a string consists of numbers and alphabets. You want to break it into parts, an analogy is primes' factorization, but how can you do similar thing with strings [0-9a-zA-Z]* or even with arbitrary strings? I could express it in alphabets and such things with octal values and then prime-factorize it but then I need to keep track of places where I had the non-numbers things. Is there some simple way to do it? I am looking for simple succinct solutions and don't want too much side-effects.
