• Naive question of memory references in Operating system

  Hi All, I am learning memory references pertaining to Operating systems and don't seem to get to the crux of understanding it. For example, I am not able to visualize this scenario properly: "A 36 bit address employs both paging and segmentation. Both PTE and STE are 4 bytes each". How are they related? I can guess that this question might be too simple for many. But any help understanding the above basic concept would be appreciable. Regards, darkie15

• How can I create an fscanf format string to accept white space and comma (,) tokenization

  I've got some analysis code (myprog) that sucks in data using the following: if(5 == fscanf(in, "%s%lf%f%f%f", tag, & sec, & tgt, & s1, & s2)) which works just fine. But in the situation where I've got data files that are separated by commas, I'm currently doing something like: sed 's/,/ /g' data | myprog Can I modify the format string in the fscanf() function to accept both delimitation formats?

I have been taught that a pipeline's instruction throughput is increased once the number of pipeline stages is increased, but in some cases, throughput might not change.   I have properties called reel1, reel2, reel3, and reel4. How can I dynamically reference these properties by just passing an integer (1-4) to my method? Specifically, I am looking for how to get an object reference without knowing the name of the object. In Javascript, I would do: temp = eval("reel" + tempInt); and temp would be equal to reel1, the object. Can't seem to figure this simple concept out in C#.

  I've read the max heap size on 32bit Windows is ~1.5GB which is due to the fact that the JVM requires contiguous memory. Can someone explain the concept of "contiguous memory" and why you only have max 1.5GB on Windows? Secondly, what then is the max heap size on 64 bit Windows and why is this different than what's available on 32 bit?

  ok, embarrassing enough, I posted code that I need explained. Specifically, it first chains absolute value and subtraction together, then tacks on a sort, all the while not having to mention parameters and arguments at all, because of the presense of "adverbs" that can join these functions "verbs" What (non-APL-type) languages support this kind of no-arguments function composition (I have the vague idea it ties in strongly to the concepts of monad/dyad and rank, but its hard to get a particularly easy-to-understand picture just from reading Wikipedia) and what do I call this concept?

• Development Environment for Testing MySQL Replication

  Is there an easy way to setup an environment on one machine (or a VM) with MySQL replication? I would like to put together a proof of concept of MySQL replication with one Master write instance and two slave instances for reads. I can see doing it across 2 or 3 VMs running on my computer, but that would really bog down my system. I'd rather have everything running on the same VM.
