• mounted smb share throu fstab, gets read only on added files

  I mounted my nas in ubuntu 12.10 and it works with read/write, but when I'm adding a file or directory that file gets read only permissions. My fstab mount looks like this: //192.168.0.12/share/ /media/nas cifs credentials=/home/jocke/.smbcredentials,iocharset=utf8,file_mode=0777,dir_mode=0777 0 0 If I mount the smb share manualy through the GUI it works, but not through fstab. What I am doing wrong?

  Is it possible to create a script/live distro that replaces some system32 files? To explain it a bit more in details: There is a company that has multiple computers (think in 100/1000's) and they all are missing the same system32 files since the company's software removed it. The systems are distributed all over the world and are managed by "normal" people who don't have any knowledge about computers. I want to create a usb stick that i can mail to all those people which contains a script that executes when you boot the usb. this script should replace the missing system32 files without any user input is this possible, and if so how could i manage this?

• How to remove large number of files/folders in linux

  We are using hadoop to split a table into smaller files to feed to mahout, but in the process, we created a huge amount of _temporary logs. we have an nfs mount for the hadoop volume so we can use all the linux commands to delete folders files, but we just can't get them to be deleted, here's what I've tried so far: hadoop fs -rmr /.../_temporary : hangs for hours and does nothing on nfs mount: rmr -rf /.../_temporary :hangs for hours and does nothing find . -name '*.*' -type f -delete : same as above the folders look like this (38 of these folders inside _temporary): drwxr-xr-x 319324 user user 319322 Oct 24 12:12 _attempt_201310221525_0404_r_000000_0 the content of these are actually folders, not files. each one of those 319322 folders has exactly one file inside. not sure why the do the logging this way. Any help is appreciated.

  Is it possible to mirror the two directories without overwritting the files in destination directory with new/changed/deleted files. Something like snapshots. Example: Copy the source directory with all files and sub-directories to destination directory, but if destination directory contains, for example, file A.xls and A.xls has been changed in source directory then copy A.xls but keep the previous A in destination directory as well. To preserve the previous file a datestamp, or counter can be added to the file name. Example after copy: SomeDirectory |--A.xls |--A_20120701.xls |--A_20120920.xls Thank you.

• Processing files from a Content Distribution Network problem

  From what I understand that CDNs are meant to physically cache your static files in multiple regions closer to your users. However, I've noticed a few websites that when a page is requested from their server, they grab the asset files from their cdn, process them (compress, minify, etc.) cache the results on their server and then send them to the user requesting the page. This doesn't make too much sense to me. Wouldn't processing the files on your server eliminate the gains from using a cdn? Is this a normal way of doing things, or am I not understanding the whole asset management concept?

• viewing fbx files in windows via xna 4.0

  I've made some models in Blender and exported them in Autodesk fbx format. I'm trying to view them using XNA 4.0 Refresh. Loading them isn't much an issue, but I'm not familiar enough with XNA 4.0 to, well basically I want to load in the model at say the origin (0,0,0) world coordinates, and then rotate and/or zoom the camera about the world coordinates origin as well so that I can test the model. Typically the mouse, and maybe some arrow keys for zooming/rotating the camera. Anyways, this seems like a simple task and I shouldn't have to re-invent this, isn't there a skeleton code somewhere for this kind of thing for XNA 4.0? I couldn't find a solid example for this on the web. I found a couple that seemed like they might work for xbox, but I'm trying to do this on windows only. Anyways, just looking to be pointed in the right direction on this one, thanks.

  In Notepad++ (v5.9), I want to search for files which contain two words. For example, I would like to find all text files in a directory that have both Alpha and Bravo in the file. They may not be next to each other and they may have multiple occurrences of either. I just want to find the files that have at least one instance of each. Is there a way to structure this search without resorting to Regular Expressions? Thanks for the advice.

• How can I remove old log entries from a log file and archive them somewhere else in Linux?

  CentOS 4.x I apologize in advance if this is not the appropriate place to ask this question. It pertains to a linux server / IT admin task. I've got a log file on an old CentOS 4.x server and I want to remove log entries older than a certain date and place them in a new file for archive. I'm aware that there are log rotate tools that do this but this should just be a one-time task so I'd prefer not to set that up. Additional notes: If the date part it tricky or too resource intensive, an alternative would be to just keep the last X number of lines and move the rest. I was originally thinking of something like tail -n 10000 > newfile.txt but that would mean moving the "good" logs to a new file and then doing a name swap... and then I'd still need to remove the "good" entries from the archive. This particular log file is pretty large (1 GB) so I'd prefer the task to be as resource and time efficient as possible. The extra pipes in the log concern me and I'm not sure if I'd need extra protection in the commands to avoid that from causing problems.

• Tell if IIS is being asked to serve compressed pages?

  Hi, I'm trying to find out if our IIS server is being asked to serve pages compressed. I'm a noob regarding a lot of this so am working my way through the issues. We're using IIS 6.0 and have correctly turned compression on. If I use Fiddler2 to analyse the HTTP requests via localhost, then Fiddler reports that the pages are compressed. If we then access the server over the network, either via its external URL or via the internal server name, Fiddler reports those pages as uncompressed. Therefore, it's logical to assume that something is getting in the way - presumably our ISA server. Our ISA administrator states that ISA is configured to allow compressed requests but what I want to do is to look at the requests coming through to IIS to see if IIS is being asked to serve pages compressed. I'm fairly convinced that our request is going to ISA, ISA is forwarding these, but not with the "compression" details - therefore IIS is not performing any compression. I've looked at the IIS logs but can't see anything obvious about the HTTP request. Is there any way I can check, on the web server itself, this sort of information? One thing that is confusing, but it may be normal, is that the Client IP making the request is not the orignal PC (i.e. mine) and not the ISA firewall, but the web server itself... Thanks

  I am getting an error message to the effect of unable to move files to a single file. I am not trying to do this. What I am trying to do is move files from one folder to another folder (staging) and then deleting the original folder. If you can show me a better way to do this since I am not doing this correctly.   So what I wanted to do. comperes(7zip) and split 600MB folder into 199MB parts but sadly when I tried to do this task with archive manager it gave me an error, but I know that if I use terminal it will work. I looked this up in askubuntu and found out about this commend 7z a -v5m -mx0 ubuntu.7z I understand that v5m will split it to 5 mb parts and -mx0 means that it will not comperes it but I want it to comperes so what should I write instead of this -mx0 pleas note: I am using .7zip because I most probably will use this file on windows pc thank you in advanced

  I'm moving my notes to evernote. To this end I need to convert .doc/.docx files to rtf. The reason for this is that I have a script to import rtf into evernote. However, some of my .doc/.docx files contain images. Is there any way to identify which .doc/.docx files contain images without viewing them all? I have thousands. This way I can simply open the few that have images and copy/paste the entire content straight into evernote. Should say that I'm using OS X 10.6.8.

  I want to download from remote http server all files directories,files and so on. I found some solutions to ftp server,but doesn't work to http. Until now no luck with wget -r or -m. It download all direcotories in the root and the respective index.html. Not all files and sub-directory under such it(note the sub-directory may have another directory and so on) not sure on tags fix for me if needs. • SteamCMD can't add files to my home directory

  I'm trying to clean up the administration of some game servers I run on a Ubuntu box, part of which has been finally setting permissions properly so I can run the Steam console tool that controls updates and such. I had been running it as root using sudo, but I changed the permissions so that I can start it as a regular user rather than root. That bit seems to work fine, but now when SteamCMD actually starts, it errors with the following output ./steam.sh: line 24: /home/angleosaxon/.steampid: Permission denied Installing breakpad exception handler for appid(steam)/version(1334262703) SteamUpdater: Error: Couldn't create directory /home/angleosaxon/Steam/package, got error 13 [ 0%] Download complete. [----] Verifying installation... unlinked 0 orphaned pipes [----] !!! Fatal Error: Steam failed to load: *SteamStartEngine(0xbfa7cfa0) failed with error 1: Failed to open logfile /home/angleosaxon/Steam/steam.log Leaving aside the question of why it wants to add this information to my home directory, why is it getting access denied errors? As I understand it, since it's being run by my account, it operates with my permissions, so it should be able to read/write from my home directory, shouldn't it? • Restoring file properties but not the complete files, from backup

  While copying data from my old storage on a Linux computer to the new (linux-based) NAS, I accidentially failed with getting the properties (most important: the modify dates) along to the new location. I also continued to use/modify the files at the new location and hence, cannot just copy it all over again. What I would like to do is a diff between files in the old vs. the new storage, and for those being identical, restore the properties from Linux storage to the NAS storage files. Is there a clever way such as a script or a tool to do this? I could either run it on the Linux box or in worst case from a remote Windows computer. Grateful for any suggestions. /Jon

  I am trying to do some changes to my myApp.js file of coco2dx project for android in eclipse but I am not able to do it. I am actually trying to change the default background image of my app. But when I run my project all the changes goes back to before values For Eg: This is the default line wer we are setting our background image this.sprite = cc.Sprite.create("res/HelloWorld.png"); I am changing it to the following line: this.sprite = cc.Sprite.create("res/CloseNormal.png"); But when I run my project CloseNormal.png goes back to HelloWorld.png I am using: OS: Win7 Cocos2d Ver: cocos2dx 2.2.2 Why is this happening. The directory has this setup: owner/group = www-data Permissions = 700 Questions: Is this a good way to secure the directory from a hacker uploading files? • Can't access windows 7 shared files on Ubuntu 11.10

  I just set up ubuntu 11.10 and Samba. I got it to access shares on a Vista machine, but when I try to access the shares on a windows 7 machine it asks for a Username, Domain, and Password. I have no password set up on the windows 7 machine so I put in the username, and domain try to connect and the password prompt keeps appearing...also tried guest and admin with no luck...I've tried many different fixes(modifying registry entries & advanced securities on the win 7 machine) with no luck. • Desktop directory disappears in gnome-terminal, then appears again, but all files in it are deleted

  I am able to see my Desktop and with all its various links and files. But in the terminal when I try to access the Desktop directory: cd ~/Desktop I get: bash: cd: /home/administrator/Desktop: No such file or directory Then I find I am unable to access any of the files on the Desktop when I click on them although the file icons are there. Then the icons disappear after my clicking on them. Then I am able to access the Desktop directory in the terminal but the directory is empty i.e. all the files/folders have been deleted. What's going on? How can I fix this?
