• DNS for domain shows old website for www version

  I bought 2 domains form GoDaddy but with both I am seeing the same problems in that the domain on the www version goes to the old site which is still being hosted. I have checked the IntoDNS website and in the www record it shows: Your www.example.com A record is: www.example.com -> example.typepad.com -> cname-cloudflare.typepad.com -> What can I do to stop this from happening? Will this eventually be automatically removed and fix itself? Though obviously it's not automatically fixed itself in the long drawn out expiry process... It's been quite a while for one of them and still hasn't propagated for the www. I'm not having any problems with the normal example.com part of the site.

• Can CSS be copyrighted?

  I know CSS on a website is protected under the website's copyright since it is considered part of the overall design. I also know that images used inCSS are copyrightable. How about when CSS is used to create images? There is a CSS3 icon set that has a $25 license fee. Another developer claims those images to be copyrighted and that it is illegal to use any of the icons unless you pay the fee. I say you cannot copyright a chunk of code and if I recreate an arrow or disc icon in my CSS (whether I copy his code or write my own) he has no recourse. Can CSS, by itself, be copyrighted?

• Why is email HTML stuck in the 90's?

  (disclaimer - I've already tried asking this on StackOverflow, but apparently it was off topic. If the same is true here please let me know and I'll close/delete this question.) I've spent about a day putting together a frustrating email newsletter, using tables, inline styles etc. It feels a lot harder than it should be. I was just wondering, is there any reason why email clients have such poor support of HTML and CSS (CSS in particular)? I would have imagined they'd be scrambling to outdo each other in this department ... Is is a security thing (I can't really imagine why)? Or are they just lazy?

• Will my new HTML5 website decrease my Google ranking?

  Hi, I have a traditional HTML website that loads pages/sections of the site when people click on menu items. Pretty standard. Currently, I'm working on relaunching my website with a brand new HTML5 code & jquery that loads the whole thing, and just slides from one section to the next, sort of like this website: http://www.mino.pl/ My concern is that this will affect my ranking with google and websiteoutlook.com because it may seem like the website only has one page now instead of 8, making it look like I have less pageviews and making my site less relevant for search engine rankings. Are my concerns legit? If so, do you have suggestions on how to avoid it? I really like the idea of working with a page that 'slides' to different sections better than having pages load all the time. Any suggestions/thoughts would be very much appreciated. Thanks.

  Is it possible to conditionally call AddHandler in the .htaccess under Apache (2.x)? My present situation requires that a certain AddHandler is needed by one production server but that one breaks the development server. This requires to have 2 versions of .htaccess which is pain. So, instead I would like to wrap one AddHandler within a conditional. Something of this sort: IF IP=='1.2.3.4' THEN AddHandler type/foo .ext ENDIF The problem is new but out of my control for now. I know this is far from ideal and the servers used to match 100% as they should but temporarily they cannot.

• How can I email a vCard to users who are unable to download it?

  I have created vCards for the people in my business, and they are great for users on standard browsers; however, users browsing on a mobile device (notably iPhone) are unable to download and view my vCard. Is there a service that I can direct them to that will allow them to receive an email containing my vCard, or is there a simple way I can set this up myself? I am running my site on WordPress, and initial attempts have failed spectacularly. I'd like for them to be given the option to perform either action, but have the predominant action more prominently visible (probably via user agent detection). Something along the lines of: It looks like you're on an iPhone! It's a bummer they can't download vCards, but if you enter your email address, we'll wrap one up and send it your way! Don't worry, we won't send you junk email. Heck, we don't even save your email address! [email protected] Think you've got it all figured out? Fine, download the vCard instead! If you know of a service or simple-to-implement PHP library (or WordPress plug-in), please let me know! If not, let me know what the best solution to this problem is!

So when they fix my pc, they might install xp coz they don't have a linux operating system, and i hate win 7 and vista so I'll have to download ubuntu and install it by myself, I don't want to dual boot coz i don't have a super computer lol, i have used ubuntu on my vps, never on desktop before so i would like to know if you can download ubuntu, install it, on a xp pro, then remove xp pro? is there any tutorial? thank you

  Hey guys, I would like to start a project and I am concerning what kind of programming language/web framework to use. There is not that much logic involved. It's about a community-page with a lot of users(not that much at the beginning but I would like to be ready to welcome a lot), that should be able to communicate through private messages and a forum and there will be a lot of content (news, articles) to consume. I also want to provide several authorization settings to provide some content for only specific people. In fact it's about a content management system, but I want to design it functionally myself. And I want to use some external APIs. The only website I can think of with almost similar functionality is pokerstrategy.com. I looked up their job offers and it seems like they use java and php Maybe you guys can give me your thoughts. What would you use to encounter that requirements and how would you apprach? Thank you

• Analytics: Test events not showing up - how to troubleshoot?

  I've got 3 profiles: Master, Raw Data, and Test, on the Test profile I have no filters configured. I want to test using some events. I created a local HTML file as shown below to generate some test data that I could play with in Analytics. But the events never showed up in Analytics. I wonder what I might be doing wrong? • General website publishing questions involving domain forwarding issue

  Even though I have been having a certain level of knowledge and experience about web development I have never interested in obtaining a domain and publishing a website from my own server. Since today I have been struggling with getting my own domain and configuring it utilizing web sources. I started with learning the outline of web publishing process including web server installation, deploying a website for testing purpose,router port forwarding, getting a domain and forwarding domain to my router which will also forward http requests to my web server I am confused about some parts and so far could not get the web site accessed from outside of the network. All I try to do is just for learning purpose so I do not pay much attention to security issues for now. I have Server 2008 and IIS 7.5 installed. I use a laptop and have access to the modem over wireless and my modem is Zoom x6 5590. Well I will continue explaining what I have done so far and what I think will be after each action I did, I have successfully had access to my website on any local computer entering the internal ip address and port pair of the host machine in a browser. Next, I forwarded port 80 of my host machine creating a virtual server like 10.0.0.x(internal ip(static) of the host) - tcp - start port : 80 - end port : 80 in router options. Now I suppose every request that will come to the public Ip on port 80 will be forwarded to my host machine(10.0.0.x) over port 80. So If everyhing went as desired, the website listening on port 80 will accept the request and process the issue and finally respond bla bla bla... I suppose to access my website from outside of the network by entering http://MyPublicIp:80 in a browser but I couldn't accomplish this task by now despite using godady's domain forwarding tool,I see a small view of my website when I click the "preview" button that checks whether the address(http://publicip/Index.aspx) I entered where my domain will be forwarded is available or not. I am sure that configuring domain does not play a role in solving such a problem since using public ip and port matching does not help. So here is the first question, What is the fact that I face this problem? After that, I have couple of question regarding domain forwarding using godaddy tool. Can I forward my domain to a any port for example port 8080 other than default http port 80? Additionally, can I use a sub-domain to forward to a different port of the host? What I want to design is if the client enters www.mydomain.com, website1 will respond over a specified port and after when a client enters info.mydomain.com, another website which listens on different port will respond. I tried to add a sub-domain and forward it to a address like http://www.mydomain.com:8080/Index.aspx with no success. Can I really do that? Finally, what if I have a ftp site listening on the default port 21 and I create a domain like ftp.mydomain.com that will forward to that ftp site address. Is it possible to use sub-domains for ftp site access? I know I am more than confused but no matter whatever and however you reply to me, you will help me have a more clear view on this subject. I wish to move away from Netvibes since I don't care to share my browsing habit, and certainly not my mail password, with another person or company. Here's what I can do: First choice: create classical web version with all products in that page - http://www.myweb.com. create mobile web version with all products in the page and use jQuery Mobile to format all nicely but this may be long to (load + format), and may provide bad user experience - http://m.myweb.com. Second choice: create classical web version with all products in that page create mobile web version with almost nothing but a Web page showing wait, then download all products in the page using AJAX and use jQuery Mobile to format all nicely. Showing a wait, loading message gives far more time to do whatever I want and may provide better user experience - http://m.myweb.com. Question: if I choose the second solution, Google won't read anything on the mobile version (because all products will be downloaded in the page using AJAX), so it wont be properly read by crawlers. What / how shall I do?

The question How is this done with .htaccess using mod_rewrite? I've banged my head against the wall trying to figure this out, but in general, the rewrite flow would seem to be something like this: External 301 redirect ( mydomain.com/account/ -- mydomain.com/account ) Internally append .php ( mydomain.com/account -- mydomain.com/account.php ) I've been Googling this all day, read thousands of lines of documentation and config texts, and have tried several dozen times... • Google bots are severely affecting site performance

  I have an aggregate site on a linux server that pulls in feeds from a universe of about 2,000 blogs. It's in Wordpress 3.4.2 and I have a cron job that is staggered to run five times an hour on another server to pull in the stories and then publish them to the front page of this site. This is so I didn't put too much pressure all on one server. However, the Google bots, which visit a few times every hour bring the server to its knees in the morning and evenings when there is an increase in traffic on the site. The bots have something like 30,000 links to follow at this point. How do I throttle the bots to simply grab the new stories off the front page and stop there? EDIT- Details of my server configuration: The way we have this set up is the server that handles all the publishing is an unmanaged instance via AWS. It mounts the NFS server and connects to the RDS to update content, etc. You get to this publishing instance via a plugin that detects the wp-admin link and then redirects you into there. The front end app server also mounts the NFS and requests data from the RDS. It is the only one that has the WP Super Cache on it.... The OS is Ubuntu on the App server and the NFS runs CentOs. The front end is Nginx and the publishing server is Apache.

• Using XML in a Flex Website to Improve SEO

  Hi, I've got a Flex 3 site called www.brainpinata.com that's a trivia game. Basically, everything in the site is pulled from a database-- the questions, choices, and answers. So, unfortunately, Google doesn't index my content. So, I'm trying to think of ways to improve the situation: A) If I took my database data and put it in an XML file which was in the website's root directory, would this work? Would it violate any Google policy? (The info would be the same as in the db-- so nothing shady.) Would I have to "wire" the XML into my site or would it be enough to just have the XML sitting in the root directory? B) Another idea is to use the noscript tag and load the XML content there. As I understand it Google indexes content that people who have Javascript turned off would see. I know Flex/Actionscript 3, and unfortunately, I don't know how to load XML content with HTML. Does anyone know of an example where a Flex site uses XML for the noscript content? Thank you. -Laxmidi

I tried: Dolphin, DZOIC-Handshakes, elgg, Oxwall, SocialEngine, and some plugins for wp and other cms. I don't need much, just: groups, chats, forums, profiles, PM, photos, pages, comments, search, statistics. Most of which included in pretty much every CMS out there... but not all... So, what good solutions there are? Also I don't mind paying some money (i guess no more then 200$), but I'd prefere if it was a free open source engine. Of course it should be php+mysql based.

  Currently I am creating a website which has a common topic for an article, but it's going to be different content for each country, and also, each of that content will be provided in several languages. And this mechanism exists in most of the parts in the website. For example, I have an article about tax. This article has to be different for each country, for example china. And tax content for china should be written in china AND english language (for non china-speaker). What is the best URL pattern to handle this? What I've been thinking is, using a sub folder (/country-code/language-code/) such as: www.example.com/cn/cn/tax www.example.com/cn/en/tax Or using top level domain such as: www.example.cn/cn/tax www.example.cn/en/tax Or subdomain such as cn.example.com/cn/tax cn.example.com/en/tax I think I will not prefer the last option since I might need to use subdomain for other purpose. Which left only subfolder and TLDN. I've read some articles saying that TLDN is good for localized content (language-specific content), but in my case, my TLDN will also has english contents (for non local speaker) which is specific only to that particular country (also the purpose of this is to let people from other country easily search it through google). What is the best pattern to pick and why?.

• What's the best practice for linking to/from guest posts on other blogs?

  When writing a guest blog for a site, I include a link back to my site - an inbound link. If I were to write a post on my blog publicising my guest post, that would mean there were reciprocal links, thus cancelling each other out, correct? If I made the link (on my blog) back to the guest post nofollow, would that cancel the effect, meaning I still get link juice from the guest post? Further down the line if the site I posted on as a guest wanted to write a post for my site, what is the best way for me to prevent re-introducing the reciprocal link problem?

• External Video Hosting - will it eat my bandwidth?

  I hav asked this question before, on serverfault, but have been unable to get a clear answer or spammy ones. A client runs a website with limited bandwidth per month (10gb) but wants his users to be able to download hq videos. Now if he would rent hosting space on amazon, for example, the downloads would still go through his website right? So would this then still eat his bandwidth then, or not? It there a way to circumvent this? How do you do this, if you have limited bandwidth? If you are kind enough to answer, please don't spam me with what is good and not good hosting, I already know.
